Days to kickoff: 21

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

21

Athletic and academic achievement always trump athletic achievement and incarceration.

HAPPY KARIBI DEDE DAY!!!

A native of Woodbridge, Va., Karibi Dede began his Auburn career at safety before becoming an outstanding linebacker for the Tigers. In addition to his superb defensive play, Mr. Dede achieved Academic All-SEC honors in four consecutive years. He was named to the inaugural class of the National Football Foundation's National Honor Society.

If that wasn't enough to impress you, he was a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, the "academic Heisman Trophy". He obviously took Dr. George Petrie's Auburn Creed to heart. I'm not sure of the current whereabouts of Karibe Dede. I found a reference to a signing with the Montreal Alouettes in early 2008; the CFL web site does not currently show him listed on a roster. I also found a reference to him as a 2008 assistant coach at Freedom High School in his hometown; he is not listed on their coaching staff at this time. Anyone know what Mr. Dede is up to now? Whatever it is, I'm sure he's successful doing it.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* James Brooks is one of the greatest running backs in the history of Auburn football and still, by a large margin, Auburn's career leader in all-purpose yardage. He also had an All-Pro NFL career. Had he not spent time incarcerated for being a deadbeat dad, he would have been today's honoree.

* Ed Graham: His most famous moment, at least in my recollection, was the 2nd half kickoff return for a TD vs Florida State in 1984. Brent Fullwood had a great return going before coughing up the football near the 40. Ed quickly plucked the oblate spheroid out of the air and dashed the rest of the way for 6 points. In one of Auburn's most exciting games, AU nipped the 'Noles, 42-41.

Shout outs welcomed! Who's your favorite 21?

question for Charles,
what are your thoughts and the effect(if any) on Auburn's football team in light of the Colonial Bank failure?

Did Lowder give a sizable amount of money to Auburn every year?

Maybe this a good thing? Lowder's undue influence is over?

12:35 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Kristina the no locals with DTV is really aweful!! It didnt really bother us until that last big storm that came through Lee Co serval months back. We had to rely on the radio and internet news from Columbus for info. I hear that there is a bill in the works to lift the prohibition of local channels for satellite TV users. I need to write my congressman to make sure he is supporting it!

Hello to all the Hotties! Since this is my first post in 5 months, has my membership been pulled? I still wear my HABOTN T shirt if that counts for anything. Could I run stadiums or something to atone for my absence?

At any rate, War Eagle to all, and I'm looking forward to the season. I think the key to our hopes of a decent year depend on us winning the first 4 games. If we can, we could have a very good year; if we lose even one of those, we will probably be like last year - fighting to become bowl eligible. If we go 2-2, then it will be dismal. 1-3, start thinking about next year. 0-4, well, lets don't go there.

Thanks for all your good work, Jay. I've been lurking and reading your updates even though I haven't posted.

12:43 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Welcome back, Coosa!

We do have a little indoor antenna now but it doesn't pick up either the Columbus or Montgomery channels all that well. May have to go to one of those classy rooftop antennas.

We haven't had cable since we moved here since I refused to pay $25 more for the same service I received in Montgomery. That and I hate Charter. So I will just be happy to have ESPN back.

AUBigCat, I will be writing that letter too!

12:52 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

coosa, I'm thinking only JayGT's banhammer obliviates membership, so you're good. Great to see you posting again.

12:53 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Welcome back, Coosa!

Kristina, I felt the same way about the classy rooftop antenna and when I thought I was about to have to get one I discovered they have some really good options for attic antenna's that give you about the same reception without the WV look.

I'm trying to find a website I used to read about these very important topics. I'll post it if/when I locate it.

1:03 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

without the WV look

that was funny, Monica. True, but still funny.

1:06 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Thanks, Monica. I will look into those.

1:08 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Can't believe I found it.

This site lets you enter your address and they will help you figure out what antenna you need to get the station's you're trying to get.

http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx

Also, the guys at our local Radio Shack were very antenna/satellite geeked up and helpful.

1:14 PM
Blogger Monica said...

ha THT - yep, very true :-)

1:14 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

I know some people who give a billing address for another city so they can receive locals for that area. I think they go by zip code to determine your eligibility for the locals. Just thought I would mention, I don't know how it would affect service calls and such.

1:14 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Depressed, we thought about that but since we have dsl, etc thru AT&T already, we bundled so they have our address already.

1:28 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

That's a bummer. The local channels issue is the one thing that keeps me with Charter.

1:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Man, I thought James Brooks would be the guy here, but I see the reasoning. Congrats to Dede. He has one of the coolest names for an Auburn player that didn't sound macho.

1:40 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Question for Charles

Even with the correction, anyone want to set the odds on whether this will get answered or not?

1:42 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Kristina Im still stuck with charter DSL :( AT&T would work I guess but we would need a land line and I havent had a land line in at least 10 years.

1:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Great article on no QB controversy, Jay. I knew Todd had the it factor, although I don't know what it is. Having the if factor is important. If it had just been an it factor, I think someone else could have won the job, but the it factor decides things.

1:48 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

I don't like bashing those that have donated to Auburn. I think Lowder has done more good than bad for Auburn. The day I outdo what he did, I'll bash him.

Things like Jetgate happen all the time. Unfortunately in our case it was tossed around in the media by the bammers that are always trying to throw dirt at us. We are always under scrutiny, because bammers have the little brother syndrome.

Often they follow the throw crap and see what sticks theory. For example this bammer liar fabricated one about Rane calling Nutt. It's a complete lie but people, even Auburn fans, still believe it.

1:55 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Good article on QB thing, JG.

JGT, can I ask if you are turning into an Auburn fan?

1:58 PM
Blogger coosa said...

Kristina - First, a disclaimer: I am in no way suggesting that you do anything that could be considered unethical or illegal. Not sure how you could use this info, but just to make you aware:

If someone is living in an area that allows the locals, they can get a receiver for their camper that they can take anywhere, and it only costs 5.99 month. I have the Birmingham locals because I live in a zip code that allows it, but I have a farm in an area that doesn't have them. I carry my receiver for the camper to the farm and I'm able to get all stations there for just 5.99 extra. My uncle lives in Atlanta and has the same situation. When he is in AL, his local stations are still those in Atlanta. I've got another relative who lives close to my farm who is unable to get any locals. Its utter insanity, but thats the way it is.

So, if one had a family member in an area that allows locals, then one could possibly talk that family member into purchasing a camper receiver subscription and then get them to leave said receiver at your house until they go on a camping trip. You could still keep your DTV subscription and continue to use the receivers you have now in other rooms, but you could at least have locals on one tv.

Just an idea. The ban on locals in certain areas is about the dumbest law ever made.

Well,THT, I was all ready to celebrate James Brooks Day. I guess you convinced me to go with Dede following your write-up. No doubt he's an impressive guy, just nowhere near the player Brooks was. If it's not Cribbs tomorrow, though, I'm going to be upset!

Watching the PGA Championship today. A couple of things I've noticed during the coverage - this Tiger fellow is a pretty good golfer, and Rory McIlwane needs a haircut but somehow I get the idea that his HOT girlfriend doesn't seem to mind.

2:34 PM
Blogger Aubie said...

THT,
I am sure tomorrow's honoree will be Joe Cribbs, but I have a special request. As you know, Danny Arnold was an honoree on day 22, but Danny wore number 20 for two years prior to that. When Joe Cribbs arrived in Auburn, he wanted 20. Danny didn't mind, so he switched.
Good enough reason to be an honoree twice?

2:37 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Aubie - you can honor Danny Arnold on HABOTN any and every day you so choose! I'm glad you're keeping track of such things. I'm embarrassed at some of the folks I've forgotten to mention.

Choco - uh oh ;-)

Ok, don't mean to be a picker of nits, but there's a factual error in yesterday's story about Todd getting the starting gig:

"Burns burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2007, when he started the Tigers' September win against Mississippi State. "

Kodi made his starting debut against New Mexico State, the week after his first appearance in a loss to the Bulldogs.

I'm guessing you had it right in your story, and your copy editor screwed it up.

3:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Lets here it for Jorrell Bostrom. At 6-3 and 362, he is your Dairy Queen offensive lineman of the week.

Coosa! Welcome back. Your waters help form several of our lakes.

And in tandem with the Tallapoosa, you form the state's eponymous river, the Alabama.

But as not to let the UAT types think the river was named for them, I've taken to habit of referring to it as the CoosaPoosa River. It has kind of a ring to it.

I realize this might be a tad random and rambling, but I've been in the yard for 3 hours, and I'm a wee bit dehydrated.

3:12 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Freep: That's my mistake.

Burns played against MSU in 2007, but he didn't start. Sucks for me.

3:15 PM
Blogger coosa said...

Thanks for all the welcome back messages; you are a forgiving group.

Jet, I never thought that choosing Coosa as a name might somehow brighten the day of a uat person. I'd change it, but its too much trouble.

I sure have heard 36-0 a lot in my time away from the HABOTN. I never bragged that much about 6 in a row; what's wrong with those people?

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Hey everyone. Nothing like relaxing on a Saturday afternoon watching the PGA Championship and Football later. Life is good!

3:23 PM

Isn't it odd that NFL teams make most of their practices open to the public -- and every scrimmage -- yet colleges generally keep things locked down?

3:44 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

yepp, definitely a big difference between pro ball and college ball. Media can be way more brutal in the pro's also, especially up North. Must be more to hide in college ball than pro ball.

Blogger ADP said...

I got cash money that says you eventually become a fan if you aren't already. Of course the appearance of objectivity is necessary.

3:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I suspect it is due to the similarity of NFL offenses. I have read before that usually 80% of NFL playbooks are exactly the same.

3:54 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I can promise you that I won't become a fan.

My goals in life have nothing to do with Auburn. At all.

3:54 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I guess there's just more to hide.

Some also might suggest that NFL coaches are better and, therefore, less likely to hang their hat on "secret" schemes.

3:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, I guess it is hard to become a fan when it is also your work. I mean, I am sure you spend a lot of time at Auburn just waiting for something to happen. That can't be fun.

3:59 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Auburn represents pressure, work, long hours and anxiety to me. It's been like that for 11 years now, so that "image" will never change.

When I'm finished with this business and either move on or retire, I'll never again watch a full game of college football.

It's been my job for so long, I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.

I'm glad you all enjoy it, though. Helps keep the lights on here at HABOTN headquarters.

4:05 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

My goals in life have nothing to do with Auburn either.

4:06 PM

I wouldn't expect major HABOTN updates until 8 p.m. or so.

4:07 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

ooops. Sorry I didn't see that one before I posted. Dropped. Zip. Never again.

Any idea what happened to Spencer Pybus? .. and ..

Coach Troop mentioned redshirting some non-freshmen. Inquiring minds would like to know who could be the target of that.

4:12 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Any sports writer would be insulted by the (honest) suggestion that they're a fan of the team they cover. Period.

4:15 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Pybus is injured. I saw him two days ago. He's around.

4:15 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I would think Derek Winter is headed for a redshirt season.

4:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Maybe the Pybus injury prompted Ford getting time at linebacker.

4:18 PM

4:18 PM

Ok...tried something new today..I read something about "smoked" bone in ribeye's at the famous Louie Mueller's BBQ in Texas. I tried that today when I was cooking a few slabs or ribs to try out my latest modification to my sauce. Not sure about the smoked steak. It has a "different" taste to it..Not bad...just not what I am used to.

As for the ribs..I think I am near where I want to be on my sauce.....FINALLY.

4:34 PM

FSJ- That works for me. I've been livin' next to cajuns for the last 5 years and have gotten fairly accustomed to everything with a kick in it. Is your similar to a Habanaro sauce?

There was a sofa I liked in the sorority dorms. It was way better than the bed. The beds there sucked.

4:37 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Eddie,

I wouldn't call it a habanero sauce...but it does have some cajun seasoning in it. A really obscure cajun seasoning that is low sodium. Most of those that you can buy in stores are too salty for my taste.

4:41 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- My neighbors would agree with you about the store bought spice. They make their own called "Swamp Dust". That stuff is awesome. My parents try to steal from me everytime they come down. I put it on everything. It is really good on fries.

4:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

wtc...my 50 year old wife just returned from 5 days helping our daughter chairman rush at her sorority. She wants me to look at photos and listen to the stories. That's too much estrogen for me. The daddy-daughter softball game is about the only thing I go to. Daughter is a senior and this is her last hoorah at the sorority.

I would say that there are more positives than negatives associated with that whole scene. I do think however, that it is important for the kids to develop healthy relationships outside of the greek world and reduce the clique factor.
