If Pat Sullivan was the arm of the modern era of Auburn football, if Terry Beasley supplied the hands, if Bo Jackson provided the legs, and if Ralph Jordan and Pat Dye were its coaches, then Jim Fyffe was surely its voice.
For 22 years, from the first day of Pat Dye through the first half of the Tuberville era, Jim painted pictures with his voice like none other. He would tell you he was the most surprised that he would have that opportunity. Those who had the opportunity to know Jim personally would testify to his humility and to the generosity of his heart. Simply, he was always willing to spend time with those who were interested in his craft. It was his way to acknowledged he had been blessed.
A Kentucky native who ended up in Birmingham after a hitch in the military, Jim moved to Montgomery to be the sports director at WCOV-TV, a minor player in the Montgomery television market. Truth be told, in the 1970s, people in Montgomery watched rival WSFA, which first had Carl Stephens, and then Phil Snow as their sports directors.
In Montgomery, Jim was known as the guy who did the public address announcing for Montgomery Rebels games at Paterson Field, and the dude stuck with announcing YMCA Pee Wee football games and wrestling on television. But Jim was always working. He did some football play-by-play for local high schools and basketball work for small colleges for a radio station the television station owned. It led to a big break – the one that defined his career.
Colonial Broadcasting, then the communications arm of the now-defunct bank, won the bid over WAPI in Birmingham to hold the broadcasting rights for Auburn football. The old crew of Paul Ellen, Mike Kolen, and Phil Snow were out. Jim and Pat Sullivan were in.
Ultimately, Jim was best known for his signature call “Touchdown Auburn!” It was something evolved over time. Once he figured out that it irritated Alabama fans as much as it elated Auburn fans, well, that was just fine with him.
Ask any Auburn football fan: they will have their favorite Fyffe football calls. Here are just a few of his notables:
Sadly, the Voice left us too soon. Jim died in May 2003. He had accompanied Tommy Tuberville to a banquet at Prattville. Shortly after arriving at his home in Montgomery, he collapsed due to a brain aneurysm. Jim, a long-time diabetic, never regained consciousness. He passed away the following morning. He was 57.
In his memory, Auburn University created the Jim Fyffe Diabetes Research Fund.

War EAgle!!!
Its gameday Brah !!
And may I say, God bless Jim Fyffe, the definition of an Auburn man.
GAMEDAY!
Best sign from ESPN College Gameday:
ALABAMA
is almost as
OVERRATED
as TIM TEBOW
By the way, SEC on ESPN is a FAIL so far. Just clicked over to the Tennessee game, NO SOUND. Hopefully, they work it out.
Ill take 4 on a day like today
I have a theory about the Tennesse QB. I believe he is related to Bill Compton and that explains why he goes up in flames every time he sees the light of day.
I could feel it in the air this morning...football is here!
May the words of Jim Fyffe's TOUCHDOWN AUBURN!!! echo in abundance over Jordan-Hare tonight!
Dang I'm missinit bad!
UT is on ESPN? I've got the Syracuse game and the OSU game?
PF, I haven't had an issue with sound. It may not be ESPN that is causing your issue.
UT is actually on NBC here.
Matt, UT is the syndicated SEC game. In Auburn, try channel 8 or 708 in HD.
Unfortunately I had already graduated and moved from the State of Alabama when Mr. Fyffe started broadcasting. Only on occasion could I get an AU station and enjoy his broadcast...my loss.
The replays of his calls are legendary.
Nice tribute to end the countdown. Thanks for the ride THT, Bro Jet and JGT.
NAVY ties it up!
Every time I look at Kiffikin I have a hard time believing he is an SEC head coach, and not a player.
I just saw a UT fan in the stands in overalls with no shirt. Of course, that is like seeing water on a fishing show.
I remember the day I heard about Jim's passing. I read it on al.com and started crying as a 23 year old. I remember listening to him sign off his last game in the Capital One bowl game in 2002 and I never listened to the Auburn network to the very end of the broadcast. Miss his voice. Wish he could have been there in 04. I will say our new voice is a great one as well. OUR DAY HAS ARRIVED. WAR EAGLE.
Yeah, ESPN is sydicating the 12:30 (and other) games. It's on the CW where I live, but the screen looks like ESPN (nice SEC/ESPN logo in the corner! I like it!).
Hilltoppers Interception!!!!!
if anyone wants a look at WVU, they're on ESPN360.com right now.
I can only get ESPNU if I change my Dish package... and that would essentially double my bill each month.
I guess I don't get to watch the game afterall.... How many games are going to be on ESPNU?
D.Miller.
I'll probably catch it on www.channelsurfing.net or on justin.tv, or on hulu.net.
Long live Al-Gore for inventing internet.
Miller, I would find a hotel or sports bar with the game on.
I'm getting ESPNU in October. Wasn't supposed to be home today, and won't any other Saturday until then. Today, I'm hitting up a sports bar to cheer on Auburn.
what is justin.tv?
Kentucky is having trouble with Miami of Ohio. No scores yet, but Miami has been moving the ball well. They missed a field goal earlier.
UT can't hold onto the ball...
www.justin.tv
I haven't used it.
D. Miller, I believe ESPNU is going to have a game every week. I could be wrong about that, I am still trying to grasp the new TV lineup for SEC games.
Be sure to have your virus cheking stuff up to date using justin.tv. Most channels are fine, but I got a nasty virus from a channel once that nearly brought my computer to it's knees.
The new TV lineup is pretty simple. The lincoln financial game is now just put on by ESPN on a local station. The rest of the SEC games are on one of the ESPN channels.
Of course, that is when an SEC team is the home team.
PF.
Justin.tv uses H264 protocol for streaming, so in a way it's like youtube. Unless you click on one of the links in the message boards, you won't get any executable downloaded to your puter.
www.Channelsurfing.net uses justin.tv as it's back-end for most of the channels. You can go to channelsurfing.net and see the schedule, click on one of the links and a window will pop open with the intended video.
You guys are in the US so you can use hulu.com too. I have to use a US Proxy to get those channels, something that I am not particularly fond of doing.
nevermind me, then... no tellings where it came from, then. it was a few years ago, and that was the only questionable think I was using at the time.
by the way:
West Virginia 10
Liberty 10
inside of two minutes before halftime.
DMiller...I've been investigating the ESPNU options. On Dish it requires the second to highest package to get ESPNU (gold 250)
Direct TV provides ESPNU at 2 cost levels lower. If your original 2 year commitment to Dish is up, then you should be able to change to Direct for cheaper.
My cable co (Comcast) doesn't even offer ESPNU at any level in my area.
I'm buying Direct next week, getting way more coverage than my cable and spending less.
nevermind, the I had the time wrong. then WVU scored. 17-10
Oh..today, ESPNU is carrying the Kentucky game, then the Miss St game , then the AU game. It also carried the SoCarolina Game the other night.
Comcast may have it now. Just last week, ESPNU appeared as an option. It's still not listed on their website as being available here, but I called this week after seeing a commercial for it, and they have it. I should've ordered it, but didn't think I'd need it this week (darnit).
Aero...sound like you are doin' betta. hope so bro.
Ah.. PF. I don't know what they were using few years back. Maybe back then they had shady stuff.
H264 wasn't rolled out till end 2007.
Here (Asia) it's the current technology. You get a little box that you plug into your internet network, set it up and hook it to your tv to get 200 odd live streaming channels. Cable and dish etc is all obsolete.
P Big Snacks F....I spent almost an hour on the phone with a Comcast bonehead to finally find out that it isn't and won't be carried in my area.
The same advertisement that you saw prompted my call.
Comcast people are not trained in talking on the phone...or installing stuff.
Hoopie
I'm doing great. Finally they've decided to send in a marines unit to take over all this work being done by little guys like me.
So by end of this year we'll have 60 odd hooAHs here, in a brand spanking new facility, next to the world's biggest US Embassy.
Besides... well.. Lets just say our objectives are much .. much clearer now.
tenn is putting it on WKU...
Happy game day to everyone.
I talked to a guy yesterday who grew up near and went to GT with Ted Roof. The story was that Roof was so mean in HS that his coach made him carry a tackling dummy during practice to slow him down! He otherwise might have hurt his teammates. For some reason I found that encouraging.
WDE
aeronaut...
it is easier to control what goes over the wire rather than what is on the airwaves...
Its all about control.. take it from someone who knows... +0)
stay safe..
I don't know about DISH, but you can call DTV and get them to change your package instantly. You could always change it back when football season is over.
And today I'm taking the night off. Let the roaches have fun for a day. We'll stomp them later.
You know what would be funny? Me watching the game here that you guys can't .. there. BUWAHAHAAA !!!
nu'keese and brice look good. they are going to have a big future at TN
Kentucky's offense started out slow, but seems to have gotten it going now.
My internet got clogged from all the spithhh from lou holthhh.
I will be able to see Auburn tonight on ESPNU. Anyone close to Columbia, SC that wants to see the game, just drop by the house.
Big 12 North = Suckarama
A vol just redefined 'redneck' to me. He is broadcasting the vols-hilltoppers game by putting a webcam in front of his fred flintstone tv.
This is NOT how you do it
j-z - quiet about the Big 12 North. A certain head coach of a certain football team may have had incredibly little success even within that division...

aero. hillarious.
Just prior to Jim's untimely passing, the Auburn Network released the 20th Anniversary cd with Many of his greatest calls from football and basketball. When I heard of his death, I pulled out my cd and listened to it all, start to finish, weeping the entire time. I miss his calls og "Touchdoooooowwwwnnn Auburn!!!!" so much, but I do also like Rod Bramblet. Rod also acknowledged the shoes he had to fill and paid great tribute to Jim on Auburn's second touchdown of the year with a "Touchdooooowwwwwnn Auburn", a la Fyffe.
I know Jim watched our incredible season in 2004, and probably irritated the apostles with his calling of the games from above, and his signature calls. But that's ok, because we all know God is an Auburn fan. That's why the sun is Orange and the sky is Blue!
War Damn Eagle!
The AU game is supposed to be on here:
Popout version
or
Non PopOut version
( Credit goes to mr Travis at another AU forum ).
False start + Delay of game + Holding.
Did Jim Tressel just buy the franklin system?
I sat down a Waffle House one morning with a friend. As we were talking I heard his unmistakeable voice behind me. Getting to hear Mr. Fyffe somewhere other than the radio was kinda cool. I introduced myself and expressed my appreciation for the job he was doing. He was, of course, very gracious. Good memory.
They are not disgracing the memory of the 3 Daves because Andre Ware is terrible and the sideline lady may be the worst.
"That was really two differen halfs" (they are called quarters)
"UT not happy being up by 5 or 6 TD's" (they are up by 4 TD's)
WAR DAMN GAME DAY!!
Nice job on the Fyfee piece, Jet.
West Virginia 23, Liberty 13
Somehow West Virginia isn't seeming so tough now.
Navy strikes back, 20-14!
WKU has momentum? Sideline reporter, it is very important to note the direction the momentum is pushing you towards.
One first down in the game and WKU has momentum? Heck, a second first down and they will be a juggernaut!!!
Monica. Sorry I was too busy to answer your question yesterday.
DWWD = Do what we do.
Should Navy beat Ohio State, it would certainly hurt the chances of Ohio State getting the snot kicked out of them by Florida in the BCSCG.
Kentucky 35, Miami of Ohio 0
WVU QB Brown looks lost even against Jerry Falwell University.
Thanks Aero. Nobody else would answer me.
google "dwwd shirt." Monica's name can be seen on the google summary.
I want one of those shirts.
I want one too, Peter. Where can we get one?
War Dam Eagle!!!! Game Day.... Time for some big hits from Mr. Bates!!!
OH and Time for the Introduction of Mr. FAH!!!!!
Go Navy!!
Ohio St leads 29-21.
WAR EAGLE MOBILE!!!
I think you sweet talk the equipment guy. They don't appear to be available for sale anywhere.
Navy interception. Ball at OSU 33.
TD Navy!!! 2-point conversion coming up for the tie!
No way OSU has a disappointing loss. Well, wait a minute. They are a member of the Big10, which is learning that it isn't a major conference any longer. Perhaps they could.
stupid call by Navy
Navy pulling close. Giving up a 100 yd interception on a two point conversion may prove to be costly. 31-27 OSU.
Terrible.
I prefer WWLWD myself.
Boston College is playing. Anyone wanna talk about their present and past head coaches?
Boston College has a coach?
I am impressed with Kentucky scoring 42. Usually someone scores 42 in a Kentucky game, but usually it isn't Kentucky.
Has anyone ever had zero right on their picks. is there a booby prize?
I gave the points on the OHU Navy game
Minnesota is losing to Syracuse. That has to be a surprise.
spin spin spin talking heads trying to cover for the bIG 10 as usual.
Navy should be at least No 2 right
Wrong guys
Greatess game next week Ohio State vs USC Oh yea talk it up boys
Jet,
Just got caught up on today's posts due to some other activities requiring my attention; however, I wanted to take the time to say what a great job you did on your tribute to Jim. I could almost hear him saying TOUCHDOWN AUBURN while I was reading your piece. Good job sir.
Game day hotties, I am fired up, ready to hit somebody. Where are you Gaines?
What is uglier than that big orange Syracuse football helmet? Well, it is that big orange Syracuse football helmet with a big blue S on the side.
ha peter
Wow, Syracuse is running the bubble screen. How could that possibly fail?
IV, in the absence of Gaines I can offer myself for your hit. Go at it.
lol Poor Gaines!
Lou Holtz should NOT say idiosyncrasies and selfishness in the same sentence ever again.
Aero,
No way. You are one of my heroes. I pray for you and your fellow troops every day. I hope that you stay safe and return to us soon. I can always go across town and hit J-Z. That would be fun also.
Idiosyncrasies = Synchronized Idiots?
Lou can spit on your TV screen saying Moooo
I wished that they would have a camera isolated on Trooper during the entire game. I believe that might be as interesting as what is happening on the field
(Stuff)mydadsays quote of the day: "Everybody loves that Da Vinci code book. (Bullcrap), it sucks. I read it. It's for all the dummies."
Syracuse and Minnesota tied with 57 seconds left.
A highlight from Trooper's speech to the troops last night ...
"People ask us if we're ready to go ... well, I'll say this ... We're sittin' on 'G' waitin' on 'O.'"
Syracuse and Minnesota headed to overtime.
Syracuse hasn't scored since the first half.
Double entendre
Interception in the endzone by Minnesota. All Minnesota needs to do is kick a field goal.
Paulus just threw a pic, game probably over.
(referring to the Jet's quote of Coach Troop)
GO JAWJA BUHDAWGS!
OK State better have a DANG STRONG offense, 'cause they have all kinds of hole on defense already.
About to put the game day lasagna in the oven.
Gameday Buffalo Chicken dip just came out of the oven. It's heavenly.
Syracuse goes down!!!
Dang. I was pulling for them, too. Let this be a lesson. Don't have a basketball forward throwing the ball for you in the endzone.
That looked too easy
80 yard drive Ga.7 Okkie St 0
Go OK State!!!
Meerkat spotting ok OK ST o line
Zach Robinson is pretty close to being FAH. Definitely FAH by white QB standards.
Game chili is simmering along nicely.
Bama Band's bus driver trying to kill innocent people in Atlanta
Ham rolls, wings, fingers, cantaloupe, chips and dip, chips and salsa, fruit salad, chocolate chip cookies.
ElTurbo's AC'd apartment and 42 inch HD.
a little too warm here for chili, but that'd sounds awesome for the weather you've been having. mmmmmm.
The Miss State game is going to start 30 mins late due to weather, hopefully that doesn't mean ESPNU's coverage of the Auburn game is going to be interrupted by the end of the Miss State game.
GO MICH!
(RichRod's success = less boastful WVU and bamer fans)
Poor Elturbo! Get out of his apartment so the kid can party!
It probably means exactly that, WERK.
grrrrrrrrrrr
For you youngsters, I am having a ball this afternoon blogging not only on this site, but also blogging on my high school graduation class site. We have got some great 1950's music going on there as well. I must be in heaven.
I love 50s music.
Fats Domino is rocking out right now with "Yes it's Me and I'm in Love Again".
Is he walkin' to New Orleans?
Norm, IV
Yes he was earlier along with "Blue Monday". Good songs, good times, good memories. I miss those days more than anyone can know. I was getting ready for the greatest experience in my life described in a single word, AUBURN.
Just in case anyone has not yet figured it out, I LOVE AUBURN.
My ex, who is dating another dude keeps trying to call me.
I'm looking for suggestions on how to tell her in a very polite way to 'get the hell out of my life'.
Family Blog. I can't be offer advice on exes here.
Aero,
I'm sorry but I don't think there is a polite way. Sometimes it takes the full blast of the truth to make someone understand your feelings. It may hurt awhile but it is the best thing in the long run.
Aero - a fragging?
ESPN/ABC has 8000 channels. Surely one of them can show the Auburn game live.
Is USC still happy about choosing a freshman QB?
Aero, the next time she calls, stick with the conversation for a minute or so and then say "Just a minute honey, I am on the phone".
Tiger Walk should be starting in a few mins...
2 hours and 12 minutes until AirChiz hits the field.
It is very strange seeing Miss State running the spread.
I don't get why the ESPNU games aren't part of ESPN Gameplan.
Ok St. just scored.
Air Force has put 72 on the board... geez.
Peter,
It's to encourage people to pay for the more expensive cable/dish package so they can get ESPN U.
Anyone know anywhere to listen live to the pre-game?
Georgia is going down. They dominated the first half and somehow appear to be going to be behind on the scoreboard.
IV out until after the game.
And OK State with an incredible 9 penalties in the first half leads at halftime. Incredible!!!
New thread up.
WERK Listen here
