Days to kickoff: 1

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

1

HAPPY PETRIE-CHIZIK DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. George Petrie started it all. The following information, with very minor modifications, is from Wapedia. The primary reference for the Wikipedia entry was Mike Jernigan's book, Auburn Man: The Life and Times of George Petrie.

George Petrie (1866-1947), born in Montgomery, was an American scholar and educator who played a crucial role in the development of Auburn University. From 1887 until his retirement in 1942, Petrie held various positions at Auburn, including professor of history and Latin, head of the History Department, and dean of the Graduate School. Petrie also organized and coached Auburn's first football team in 1892.

Petrie was the first Alabamian to earn a Ph.D. degree. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Virginia in 1887 and a Ph.D. in "history, political economy, and jurisprudence" from Johns Hopkins University in 1890. At Auburn (known until 1892 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, and from 1892 to 1960 as Alabama Polytechnic Institute), Petrie is considered the founder of the History Department and the Graduate School ... as well as the school's athletic program.

His time at the University of Virginia inspired Petrie to choose burnt orange and navy blue as the official colors for Auburn's athletic teams. Upon organizing the first Auburn football team in 1892, Petrie arranged for the team to play the University of Georgia team at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Auburn won the game 10-0 in front of 2,000 spectators. The game inaugurated what is known to college football fans as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

From AU Special Collections intro to the George Petrie papers:

Biographical Sketch: Alabama historian. Petrie was appointed professor of history at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1887. He served as academic dean from 1908 to 1921 and as graduate dean from 1921 until his retirement in 1942. Petrie wrote extensively on Alabama and Southern history, focusing on secession and the Civil War. Petrie's father, George Laurens Petrie, was minister of the Charlottesville (Va.) Presbyterian Church from 1872 to 1928. His grandfather, George Hollinshead Whitefield Petrie, preached in several churches in South Carolina and Georgia before becoming minister of the Montgomery (Ala.) Presbyterian Church, 1857-1885.

* * * * * * *

His greatest contribution to future Auburn generations may not have been the establishment of football at Auburn, but his authorship of the Auburn Creed in 1943. Let's all try to follow Dr. Petrie's example:

I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count
only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.

I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work
wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.

I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot
win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.

I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is
not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.

I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.

I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my
fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.

I believe in my country, because it is a land of freedom and
because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that
country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly
with my God."

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things,
I believe in Auburn and love it.

--by George Petrie, Auburn professor and first coach of Auburn’s Football team

Coach Gene Chizik needs no introduction, but if you'd like to read about him, I suggest Writer Tate's outstanding work in Coaches Confidential, published by the Montgomery Advertiser.

Thanks to all your kind comments during the past 3 months of the Kickoff Kountdown. It's been a blast. A special thanks to Writer Tate for cleaning up my sloppy writing and making it presentable.

btw, Mike Jernigan interviewed in 2007 about his book on Dr. Petrie by a local ABC affiliate. You can order the book here.

Excellent selection for #1 and for the right reason. On another blog recently there as a question about what it meant to be an Auburn man. Believe it or not, the blogger didn't know. The answer is easy, The Auburn Creed. It has to be Petrie's biggest contribution.

We should also take the time to recognize all the players not mentioned in the countdown. There are so many players that never get the hype, never played football after college, and never are mentioned. They work hard and fought for Auburn. I salute them. You would ever have had Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan, or Ronnie Brown without the players that played with them. Thanks to all of you good Auburn men.

So sad to be sitting in South Carolina, hearing all these gamecock fans happy to come home with a win last night (maybe this really *is* their year!), and knowing I have to put up with them all year. Well, at least they're not bammer.

THT - thanks for the history included in the countdown. #1 certainly is appropriate.

At the Auburn 150 celebration, they did a deal where alumni were nominated to read a line from the Auburn Creed. I nominated my father-in-law who was a career FBI man to read the line about "I believe in obedience to law". He was chosen, and it was a complete surprise to him when they called. I am truly honored to have such Auburn men in my family!

I missed Oregon's players actions last night. I turned off the game quickly. It was nice he oppologized, but they are just talking a 2 or 3 game suspension. Heck, I am not sure if 6 games would be enough. To embarrass your university on national television is not acceptable. Weak minded people like that have to be set straight and it isn't something that is easily changed.

You make a good point, Omnica. It could have turned into a South Carolina/Clemson type thing. When that happened, the entire team didn't get to go to a bowl, which is much bigger than a 2 or 3 game suspension. Not only do players love going to a bowl, but they get a lot of gifts for going. BlOunt should be out for a while.

Three men - a Canadian farmer, Osama bin Laden and a
White Trash Biker are all walking together one day.
They come across a lantern and a Genie pops out of it.
'I will give each of you one wish, which is three wishes in total',
says the Genie.
The Canadian says, 'I am a farmer and my son will also farm. I want the land to be forever fertile in Canada '
POOF! With the blink of the Genie's eye, the land in Canada was forever fertile for farming.
Osama was amazed, so he said, 'I want a wall around Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq and Iran so that no infidels, Americans or Canadians
can come into our precious land.'
POOF! Again, with the blink of the Genie's eye, there was a huge wall around those countries.
The Biker says, 'I am very curious.
Please tell me more about this wall.'
The Genie explains, 'Well, it's about 5,000 feet high, 500 feet thick and completely surrounds the country. Nothing can get in or out;
it's virtually impenetrable.'
The Biker sits down on his Harley, cracks a beer, lites a cigar,
smiles and says,
'Fill it with water.'

What was said to make a guy throw that punch. And then the rage after yelling with the crowd.

It was fascinating, borderline ultimate chaos.

10:38 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Oh, I called him thug of the year for everything surrounding the punch. the trash talking all week, the bad game performance, the lack of sportsmanship in handling a loss, the going berzerk after the punch, the fighting with his teammates, the fighting with fans, the being a big mofo that needs twenty people to escort him out of the stadium while still trying to fight everyone in sight. Not good.

I just can't believe that he hasn't been trained by a really good boxing coach for that punch. Rednecks do not appreciate boxing technique. They appreciate toughman wailing.

It was a good punch.

It was stupid of him to throw it, even worse when he tried to go after the crowd.

This is a senior RB who was getting looks from the pros...you have to protect yourself and your image. Unfortuantely he thought throwing punches and being Billy Bad A would be the best way to do that.

He's hurt his team by probably missing games, and he hurt himself by just being stupid.

Heck of a punch though.

I ran across an interesting article about Auburn being at a crossroads. It is why you want coaching stability. Many don't realize that Ole Nutt and GaTech use to be powers in the SEC. They were the Florida, Georgia, Auburn at one time. That is why Auburn is at a crossroads. Lets not see us go the way of Ole Nutt or GaTech.

They also mention Shug being the 3rd winningest coach in the history of college footbal when he retired, which is ironic because someone one here mentioned he wasn't a great coach because he only won 1 SEC title.

May I point you all to an old blog post of mine to mark Petrie Day:

The Current Auburn Creed has been edited. Here is the original:

"I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count up to one hundred and thirty five before being bored. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work, the kind of work that makes you sweat, like Richard Simmons' 'Sweatin to the Oldies' work. I also believe in water, hard water, the kind of water that makes it hard to lather soap.

I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind to hypnotize the weak minded like I'm some kind of hip Jedi.

I believe in honesty and truthfulness. Which proves nothing because I would say thing same thing if I didn't.

I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and sound, a mind sound, and a body sound, and in clean sports unless dirty sports will make me more moneys of dollars.

I believe in obedience because darn it, I better or else!

I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and sexual harrassment charges with uptight dames.

I believe in my Country, because its name appears on moneys of dollars.

And most of all I believe in Auburn, because I go to school there so it must exist. Seriously, why would I not believe in Auburn? What kind of denial like that would do anything for me?"

-George Petrie, the "Auburn Creed"

Did anyone keep up with those odds on who scores first? I change mine from Ben Tate to Kodi Burns. I like the 7:2.

You know many folks like me, Harrison? Dang it, so I guess I am not special after all. Let me mark than down on my list of lies my grandmother taught me. That is lie #33. My mother always told me I am not special, so I guess I should take that off the list of lies my mother told me.

Speaking of cougars...I have a question for the group. I have a buddy, who lurks around these parts but never posts, who had a rendexvous with my sister-in-law who is 37, 11 years his senior. Does that count as bagging a cougar?

37 female and 27 male is a questionable cougar encounter. If she was 40 or he was 23, I'd say for sure, but that's a gray area. Either way, good for him.

I am wondering what punishment would be appropriate. If I were coach, what would I do? Suspension for at least 6 games sounds good. Suspended until the Boise State head coach and the player that was hit ask for the suspension to be lifted. That sounds fair enough to me.

Mon- Good for Greg!

Steve- It is one thing to do something bad away from the team, but when you are wearing the uniform and officially participating in an event for the University, stiff action is required here. Personnally, I think he will split the team down the middle and single handidly kill their season completely if he stays.

Bills Fire their OC.

Can someone tell me what is going on prior to the season that 3 OC's have been fired less than 2 weeks before the season?

Sounds salacious.

11:27 AM

Bills fired their OC because he was into the whole no huddle attack and they have sucked at it all preseason. I guess the teams figure they can cut their losses now and get a new direction before they go live.
