Days to kickoff: 1
Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:
1
HAPPY PETRIE-CHIZIK DAY!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. George Petrie started it all. The following information, with very minor modifications, is from Wapedia. The primary reference for the Wikipedia entry was Mike Jernigan's book, Auburn Man: The Life and Times of George Petrie.
George Petrie (1866-1947), born in Montgomery, was an American scholar and educator who played a crucial role in the development of Auburn University. From 1887 until his retirement in 1942, Petrie held various positions at Auburn, including professor of history and Latin, head of the History Department, and dean of the Graduate School. Petrie also organized and coached Auburn's first football team in 1892.
Petrie was the first Alabamian to earn a Ph.D. degree. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Virginia in 1887 and a Ph.D. in "history, political economy, and jurisprudence" from Johns Hopkins University in 1890. At Auburn (known until 1892 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, and from 1892 to 1960 as Alabama Polytechnic Institute), Petrie is considered the founder of the History Department and the Graduate School ... as well as the school's athletic program.
His time at the University of Virginia inspired Petrie to choose burnt orange and navy blue as the official colors for Auburn's athletic teams. Upon organizing the first Auburn football team in 1892, Petrie arranged for the team to play the University of Georgia team at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Auburn won the game 10-0 in front of 2,000 spectators. The game inaugurated what is known to college football fans as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

From AU Special Collections intro to the George Petrie papers:
Biographical Sketch: Alabama historian. Petrie was appointed professor of history at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1887. He served as academic dean from 1908 to 1921 and as graduate dean from 1921 until his retirement in 1942. Petrie wrote extensively on Alabama and Southern history, focusing on secession and the Civil War. Petrie's father, George Laurens Petrie, was minister of the Charlottesville (Va.) Presbyterian Church from 1872 to 1928. His grandfather, George Hollinshead Whitefield Petrie, preached in several churches in South Carolina and Georgia before becoming minister of the Montgomery (Ala.) Presbyterian Church, 1857-1885.

His greatest contribution to future Auburn generations may not have been the establishment of football at Auburn, but his authorship of the Auburn Creed in 1943. Let's all try to follow Dr. Petrie's example:
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count
only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.
I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work
wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.
I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot
win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.
I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is
not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.
I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.
I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my
fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.
I believe in my country, because it is a land of freedom and
because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that
country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly
with my God."
And because Auburn men and women believe in these things,
I believe in Auburn and love it.
--by George Petrie, Auburn professor and first coach of Auburn’s Football team

Coach Gene Chizik needs no introduction, but if you'd like to read about him, I suggest Writer Tate's outstanding work in Coaches Confidential, published by the Montgomery Advertiser.

Thanks to all your kind comments during the past 3 months of the Kickoff Kountdown. It's been a blast. A special thanks to Writer Tate for cleaning up my sloppy writing and making it presentable.
btw, Mike Jernigan interviewed in 2007 about his book on Dr. Petrie by a local ABC affiliate. You can order the book here.

Flip it!
cha ching!
Rats! Part Deux!
J-z is hot for teacher with the new page smell.
Sean, that performance was worthy of the 2008 Auburn Offense Misfire Award.
Example of Irony:
BSU and Oregon is the game that NCAA mandated a handshake prior to the game.
rk - if I had known how much the real Auburn Creed would affect you, I would have revealed it to you sooner. My bad.
And I agree with the Afternoon Delight monica disappearance theory. Scandalous.
Come on, it wasn't THAT BAD.
Only one false start and then a delay of game penalty?
Paraphrased Stuff My Dad Says quote of the day, "I'm having a Makers Mark, you wan't one? What? 7up? I ain't mixing (friggin) makers with 7up. Might as well put a lil' (friggin) umbrella in it".
Yeah, sorry Sean, no one here deserved to be in the same breath as last year's offense.
Twitter has been officially blocked at work. Big Brother strikes again.
AU1N04,
no Mandate, no NCAA. not limited to the OU/BSU game.
The American Football Coaches Association has suggested it for every game this week as a way to start the season as a gesture of sportsmanship.
Steve- I read those one day at work and almost threw up from laughing so hard
Petter is right and Coach Gundy "a Man" said eff that, we ain't shakin their hands.
PF, I wonder if joy buzzers are allowed?
Harrison, I signed up for those twits. I love them. I am with you. When I first read a list of them, I laughed so hard I became dizzy headed.
By the way, Mike Gundy is a coach I would love to see at Auburn. He da man.
Joy Buzzers would be awesome.
Sports Center is about to reveal their not top ten plays of the week.
But not better than fleshlights. Man, I'm still laughing at that almost an hour later!
PF - You are right. It was not mandated.
As part of the NCAA’s national sportsmanship campaign, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and NCAA are partnering to hold a national “AFCA/NCAA RESPECT Weekend” the opening weekend of the 2009 football season. Games are scheduled for September 3 through 7.
Btw, I'm not insinuating that fleshlights could be worked into pre-game handshakes. Just comparing funny concepts. I would like to see the joy buzzer thing. If Spurrier had thought of that, I bet he would have gone for it last night. Maybe Kiffin will get UT to do it to UF.
Charles Hollis picked LaTech to win.
"Tech coach Derek Dooley can't match up in overall talent, but his preparation will be through the roof. He's coached over the years with Will Muschamp and Nick Saban and, well, guess who's helped with the preparation?
Louisiana Tech 23, Auburn 21"
1. At least it answers LaTech's craptastic defense against passing game.
2. He didn't tell us who's helped with the preparation. Some gameday coach that frequently loses to lesser talented teams?
My radio stays glued on 105.5 The Fan in Macon. From today forward it has changed to.....All TV Themes, All the Time.
Boooooo!!
I know it's hard to believe. Here's proof.
I think I will revise my punishment for Blount. I think the warrants an indefinite suspension until Blount convinces the head coach it won't happen again.
College football news also picked LaTech to win. 20-16.
It seems to be a trendy pick.
Tony Barnhart picked Auburn 28-10.
RK, let them live by their predictions. I hope the coaches make the players aware of these predictions. It is motivation to ensure the outcome of this game is never in doubt. Only the total destruction of LaTech is acceptable.
War Eagle!!!
here
there
where?
Everywhere?
More Beatles dicussion?
love never dies.
it just fades away
Father McKenzie?
Next week we won't be talking Auburn football. We will be talking about that shocking Charleston Southern upset of Florida, or maybe not.
Isn't Charleston Southern a team someone like Furman would play for homecoming?
Who does Charleston Southern play for HC?
yeah sfc
Here's their schedule after UF. Can't say I've ever heard of North Greenville. Is that in your neck of the woods, Steve?
Wofford
South Florida
North Greenville
Savannah State
Gardner-Webb
Liberty
VMI
Presbyterian
Stony Brook
Coastal Carolina
Scott- i'm proud of Charleston, they have the mighty Blue Hoes on their schedule.
Gotta confess to having to google that, Eddie.
I have never heard of North Greenville. Actually, I hadn't heard of Charleston Southern util I saw them on Florida's schedule. And ironically, I have been to Charleston.
So, Derek Dooley is getting help from coaches who should be working on their own gameplans?
Why Lanett? If you are going to take the team out of town, at least take them to xCTT's little place on the lake or something.
I hated stopping there for gas for crying out loud.
Cool, Blue Hoes = Presbyterian
for those that didn't google.
My cousin goes to College of Charleston. I think both they and and Charleston Southern have had decent basketball teams at various times. I didn't realize that either of them even had a football team.
I am kind of mystified by people picking Louisiana Tech. I thought I would get an idea of why by looking at who they beat last season.
Mississippi State - Well, it was the first game and MSU wasn't exactly a powerhouse. Even our suctatious team beat them and scored all the points in the game.
Indiana State - Somehow I don't see them in a BCS title game any time soon. I don't know anything about them, although I suspect they are in Indiana.
Eastern Michigan - Well, Western Michigan would be much more impressive, and they lost to them. Eastern Michigan isn't impressive.
Miami of Ohio - Not going to scare anyone.
Toledo - Mildly impressive. Toledo doesn't stink, but Vandy would spank them.
Bowling Green State - They are close to excellent. You just need to leave that word State off. Nothing impressive here.
Kent State - Ummm, Kent isn't a state and that doesn't impress me.
So, why are people thinking LaTech might be a threat?
Aeronaut- They have always gone out of town north on 85. It was Lanett Under Bowden, LaGrange Under Tubs and now Lanett under Chizik. They usually see a movie also. Wonder if that still happens under Chizik?
ChocoScott...
I was attempting to ask a facetious question in response to Steve's previous comment. Evidently this type of humor doesn't travel well over the interwebs.
I was once at the movies in Birmingham and ran into the Florida football team. It was kind of weird.
Steve...
Did it hurt?
Nah, I was on a date so I was busy strategizing.
I know, ehyou. I actually posted their schedule in response to Steve before I even saw your comment. Then I actually did get curious enough to go back and look to see who they were playing for homecoming, but I couldn't tell.
I am compelled to say this ...
Woot!
I am about to go out and buy a new blue AU shirt for tomorrow's game. I think I'll accidently knock some UAT garb off the racks while I'm there.
So, I am anxious to see Auburn take the jump to ludicrous speed. I wonder if we will be able to execute like that. I watched one of Tulsa's games last season and the camera men kept missing plays because the Tulsa offense was snapping the ball so quick.
And step on it. More than once.
Scott C- Be careful not to get it all over your shoes. The stink is hard to get out.
I was on the elevator this morning with a gamecocks fan who apparently went to Charleston Southern. The comment of the day: "Last night I watched my favorite team play like crap against a middle-of-the-road ACC team, and tomorrow my alma mater has to try to cover a 63 point spread? I'm not so sure how I feel about this whole 'college football' thing."
Steve,
The camera crew had the same problem with Auburn games last year. They set up on the line of scrimmage and follow the action downfield...not knowing that we were going backward or side to side.
Well, the word from Chizik is that if we win the toss, we want the ball and we want to score early. I like the attitude / swagger. Just hope we don't get the ball and go three and out.
Eddie, three out out is the danger with this offense. With ludicrous speed, if you are constantly going three and out you will kill your defense.
I'm more worried we'll get the ball, get inside the 30, and on 1st down Ziemba gets a false start...1st and long, we run a WR screen for nothing...second down we run left to right for a loss, then on 3rd down we throw nowhere near a WR.
RK, that was actually the killer early on last season. We would do fine until we got inside the 30.
Eddie,
Finally getting around to listen to your show from Wednesday... We agree that Ben Tate could be in for a breakout season.
WERK, you just gave me my first nervous stomach-ache of the season. We'd better not start off like that (or worse, finish like that)!
Okay, now I'm really going to buy my new shirt. I'll check back in later.
I won't get too nervous until I hear PPL is being moved to linebacker.
Tulsa plays Tulane tonight at 5:00 AuST. The game is on ESPN.
Correction, 7:00 AUST
I don't know if it's been posted or not, but everyone needs to go to Auburntigers.com and check out the video of the team going to the water park.
Thanks for the countdown THT! Let me just say it was AUsome!
You guys nervous?
You are jabbering like a flock of Magpies in the spring down on the Tenn River.
Nervous, Schmervous...kick butt, take names, and talk about it later.
Hope you are right Steve I am always nervous before game time
8 scores and 5 years ago our ancestors faced the LaTech menace. They were proud men. Get mean. The names of Brown and Rogers, Caddilac and Campbell, Rosegreen and Obamanu all prowled the plains of Auburn. Them, our fore bearers smight the evil cajuns. Let their memory live on. The only appropriate way to remember them is by smighting the LaTechies once again.
8 scores? Is that really all the touchdowns we've scored since 04? I guess it makes sense.
No, I do believe we scored 8 times in that game. We won like 52-7 I believe.
Hey Monica, Aero, mytommyd, IV, and all Hotties!!
I think i've gone through HABOTN withdrawal in the past few days.
Anyhoo,in less than 6 hours THT will be picking up his functional half from the airport.
I am watching FL vs AU from '95. This was a high scoring game with a lot of passing.
49-38 Final
I'm remaining cautiously optimistic, realizing it could be an absolute blowout runaway game with the new Malzahn offense. Or hopelessly ineffective because we are using many of the same players that struggled against UT-Martin last year. I'm hoping for some where in the middle with us winning something that's not too much of a slugfest, with everyone being available to play next week's game.
Yeah a little nervous here
WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO 2.0!!!!!
Road trip
i finally have possibly reliable , but most definitely limited internet....I am a very happy camper... despite the fact i missed the campfire :(
Amazing fact. Ben Tate needs 852 yards to move into the top five interms of total yards in a career for a runningback at Auburn.
I say he gets it
I think so too. Date has been a consistent and durable back. I hope he has a breakout season this year.
For those who don't have CSS:

"Or hopelessly ineffective because we are using many of the same players that struggled against UT-Martin last year."
Late in the season with a physically and emotionally beaten team running an offense put together by a guy who is currently running a trucking company and a guy who is a QB coach at a small high school.
Kathy,
Unfortunately to watch it on the offical Auburn webpage, you have to pay $9.99 per month.
I say Ben Tate gets it this weekend
How many carries will it take to get 852 yards this weekend?
I'm watching it right now for free at http://auburntigers.cstv.com/#
I hope you're right RK.
11 carries
171 with a 5.0 yard per carry avg.
WERK: Cool video of the water park (1:51 post). Todd sounded odd.
Ello 2.0. Good to hear from you.
Tommyd throwing cautious optimism out the frikkin window. And evidently he's now writing in third person.
Dangit.
I missed it but .. This Is SPARTAAA
Monica,
You are watching the whole debut show?
Where is it on the page?
WERK, I can watch it tonight at 11:00 on Fox
sorry it was just a little 5 minute teaser
i may be about to decide it's worth the 9.99
I didn't figure it was the whole show.
Mon's back. How was your afternoon, Mon?
Yeah Mon, what you been up to?
Check 'em out! Going to be holding this sign up at Gameday in Atlanta!

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd310/gainser71/NoBama2.jpg
Hey 2.0 Glad you have access.
My afternoon has been good, thank you.
Here's the second part of the sign. Apparently, my html skillz suck...
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd310/gainser71/NoBama2.jpg
Nice job, Gaines!
Would you say it has been a delight, mon?
I do not want to watch jim rome.
Do we need more coverage of Blount?
Yes, Michael, I would say it's been a delightful afternoon.
jim rome = finebaum
Mon, I can't believe you took michael's bait.
Michael was right!!
Whoa...who did what with who?
Lots of tailgaters setting up around campus.
It is in the air.
HAHAHA I just read the old posts.
Credit goes to Eddie, not me for making the connection.
Once someone watches the Everyday show let me know if it's worth subscribing. It looks like fun.
If I recall, Greg was getting off work early.....
oh y'all hush - we are married ya know!
If you've never called Dell's Den in Valley, AL you need to. No one answers, it's only a message. He always gives a War Eagle at the end.
334-756-3336
New shirt purchased! I am happy! That said, B'ham is crawling with Bammers this afternoon. Well, not that that's different from any other afternoon, but they are all sporting full crimson, white, and houndstooth regalia today.
Btw, saw a funny redneck dust-up at Academy today. A little boy was looking at AU stuff and his mom came up and dragged him away saying, "They all ugly anyway" (meaning whatever he was looking at). His dad, who was obviously an Auburn fan, then went off on the mom for saying that. I didn't catch all of it, but something was thrown out there about "then why the hell did you paint his room that way?", followed by cursing under the breath from both sides.
Guys you know how it is after you been married awhile.... Nuff said
digger, I don't need any reminding.
Thanks Mon!
East Gump showing lots of AU activity.
Woot!
If Greg was sitting across from me enjoying a cool one like I am he would just grin and wink
You know the grin!
It's official - Oregon suspended dude for the rest of the season.
I give all of you a laurel...and hardy War Eagle!!!
Greg is sleeping.
Thank you very much.
I know ehyou we all know. It is the curse of Adam and Eve. That's how long it has been going on.
Blount suspended for the season...
http://twitter.com/OregonFootball/status/3764639795
That seems a bit much to me but so be it
Crazy... that's a hefty suspension.
Ehyou - Nice Laurel and Hardy reference...hope we're not all saying, "Here's another fine mess you've gotten us into" to Jay Jacobs at any point this season.
What's crazy is that Oregon is announcing it via the athletic department's official Twitter.
Puppet hour! aaarrrrggghhhh
Hey Digger! I resemble that remark. I said "we are married ya know" meaning that our Starland Vocal Band wasn't scandalous. Just one of the perks of the many perks of not having kids. Our star rockets took flight just fine thank you.
maybe oreGONE can use puppets to run their offensive offense the rest of the year. it may at least frighten some teams into submission. i stayed up late to watch that crap after a long flight home and had to wake up early to get work done and then help get the rv ready.
i surely hope AU can better that performance.
i shall be departing for AU within the hour. i'll be stalking for HABOTN gear tomorrow.
WAR DAMN EAGLE HOTTIES.
Scott Choc,
I also ventured out in the Ham today to buy my new BLUE game shirt... Under Armour coaches shirt at Dick's - $75 minus the $15 coupon thank you very much.
The Bammers are out in DROVES. Flags on all cousin humpermobiles. Houndstooth baseball caps on every head to cover up the "business in the front", but not to obstruct the "party in the back".
Hey...what were those fuzzy little puppets in Return of the Jedi called?
AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!! PUPPET HOUR!!!!
i was watching the incident live last night and as soon as i saw the suckerpunch, i said to myself, "he's done, bye, see ya."
not that the BSU player didn't deserve a little sumpin' for his initiating the taunting, but blount should have kept his mouth shut before the game. don't write the check ye arse can't cash...
I already did that mikey
I've read a lot of positive comments from those that watched the first showing of Auburn Football Everyday on CSS. Can't wait to see it tonight.
Puppet air raid
all lights out
no one in the streets
This season long suspension thing is pretty stupid. Chip Kelly is going to either lift the suspension somewhere in the season (and look like .. say .. nick saban) or just keep him till his graduation (like kicking him off the team but not really). What's the point?
J-Z ...
I believe they were called Ewoks.
Weren't they?
all you folks in auburn tomorrow look for me. You can recognize be by my moustache and trademark maroon blazer
i pity the ATL this weekend
i would predict the "classiness" of ATL will drop by 71-90% by 5 PM EST tomorrow.
ewoks indeed.
they were not puppets. midgets dressed like puppets. better or worse?
They had feet, so they were better.
And Harrison, it is perfectly acceptable for more than one person to scream about the arrival of Puppet Hour.
either way it's pretty terrifying. I'm sure it's a puppet controlling the length of this day at work, Cause it is taking foreeevvveer
i go with the charlie brown scream. My favorite of all time
You mean to tell me that ewoks are not real? and Jabba the Hutt isn't really a hutt? and moon landing was fake?
ha. Remove your tin foil hats. Ewoks are real.
many puppets have feet. they also have a hand up their...well...
Did yous guys see how some people thought an Onion article about Neil Armstrong finally believing the moona landing was fake was real? I don't care how confusing that sentence is, I'm not changing it.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8237558.stm
yes chip chip, but the feet are not real. Its a whole different ballgame with ewoks.
and qui gon jinn is not to be mixed with tonic.
logical perfectly it is.
rv is ready. later and wde folks.
What if I told you guys that my dad was a puppet? Would you think less of me?
I'm out. La Wreck La Tech!!!!!
I'd think less of your mom
Is Gene Stallings or Gene Chizik going to be on Fbaum?
Not only are ewoks real...they are among us.
DO NOT GET SPRAYED WITH PUPPET DUST
It is like being spit on with snuff thru a screen door at a bammerneck single wide
Don't know Mon
Aubie - nice job navigating your way through the Bammers today to get your shirt! I couldn't believe it, but after a lot of searching I found a really cool collared blue AU shirt at Tiger Pride for less than $30 (those Under Armour shirts are pretty sweet, though - especially when you have a coupon).
Major pity for ATL! Not only are they hosting the Bammers, but they have Britney Spears and NASCAR this weekend. Talk about the triple crown of the mullet nation! The Braves are also in town, to add to the craziness.
CountChocula ...
That would be one of the signs of the Apocalypse.
AeroOut.
Ya'll keep the hate machine running.
Is there a prize for winning the first week of pickem?
The Four Horsemen - Saban, Earnhardt, Jr., Britney's dad, & a player to be named later.
Remember, tonight at 7:00 AUST we will get a preview of Auburn's offense, also known as Tulsa versus Tulane on ESPN.
Steve, are they still running the exact same offense?
I suspect it is the same or very similar. They still have the same other OC. It is likely not exactly the same since a lot depends upon what Malzahn chose to install.
Yes, Oregon suspends Blount for the season!!! Way to go Coach K.
I just finished spending the day at DollyWood.....
Dolly was at the park today..and I think she was hitting on me.
Steve, looks like you and the lurkers are on your own. I'm outta here!
Alright, you've got FSJ to keep you company. Take it past 400, guys!
"Not only are they hosting the Bammers, but they have Britney Spears and NASCAR this weekend."
Its also Gay Pride Weekend in ATL. Jus' sayin. ;)
Correction: Black Gay Pride Weekend
I need some help from the South Alabama Hotties.
I'm in Mobile with my ill mother. Her cable doesn't have ESPNU. Where's a good place to watch the game with an Auburn crowd?
sittin at ATL for about 2 hrs til MrsTHT gets here. WAR EAGLE!!!
I think I saw a hooded white robe with klan patch here somewhere.
THT.
There used to be a decent ice cream joint in Hartsfield-Jackson.
Hey, is anybody here? You here Gainser? How about you 2.0?
Phred is in the building.
present.
I was starting to think I had run everyone off.
