First Post: Sunday of Week Four

Hey everyone. What an exciting game that was. I had on;y a few minutes to piece together today's main story (linked below) but I really enjoy those kinds of stories in a sense. I have to write based on gut instinct rather than taking time to review everything I'd seen during the past four hours.

So I wrote about the defense. Yes, Auburn allowed more than 500 yards last night. That's not very good. On the other hand, the Tigers intercepted five passes and recovered a fumble. So the defense took center stage in the fact that a.) their troubles created suspense and b.) their opportunistic work eventually eliminated suspense.

A mixed bag? I'd say so. Auburn defenders should expect plenty of tackling drills this week.

The interesting thing about that is ... many of the missed tackles were by experienced players. I'm not sure what Josh Bynes or Craig Stevens are going to learn by participating in more tackling drills, but I'm sure they'll be participating anyway.

We had great in-game participation last night. Thanks to you all for sharing your gameday with our fine little community.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

Gotta love Eric Smith's contribution last night. That was a great catch across the middle. And both of his catches were at crucial times in the game, where we needed big plays.

In this offense, we've got playmakers all over the place on offense.

I look at this like the LSU game a few years back... a big ego builder...

Although the announcers state is was WVU turnovers that won the game for us (we had nothing to do with the turn overs, pressure, coverage)... they make no mention that WVU's points were often due to crappy tackles.....

Just my two WON (KPW)

Next year, Smith and Kalub (as Mark Jones called him last night) are going to be a real Thunder and Lightning.

Davie and Jones were as bad at their jobs as any workers I've ever seen. In any profession.

11:59 AM
Blogger JD said...

I agree Dear Leader. WVU seemed to make their points on big plays and missed tackles. It seemed to me like when they had to drive the ball for the most part we were able to force a turnover. I think that was due to our DL getting very good pressure on the QB and whether we tackled him or not we forced him to make decisions. Bob Davie is one of the worst announcers that I can ever recall. I was at the game but watched the replay this morning and they were horrible

12:00 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Yeah, while the tackling sucked, it was encouraging to know we were at the ball quickly. We just need to execute better when we get there.

And are we sure they didn't grease up??? Maybe have some type of inflatable uniforms? We were just bouncing and sliding off them.

Some more of my offense criticism:

Andrew McCain missed a couple of assignments. Ben Tate needs to block better. Some fake handoffs are too easy to spot. Kodi Burns should practice throwing. Feet, Todd, feet.

Eric Smith: his rolling ball like stride and catching motion is just Beautiful. 5 ft 10 / 240 lbs slot receiver? Gus, you da man.

12:07 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Jay G,

One correction from your article. Todd didn't throw for 300 yards. The team had 300 yards passing, but Burns I think had 17 of them.

Bob Davie has always been awful. I think his first game ever was our loss to GaTech in 2005 and he's only gotten worse.

Why is T'sharvin Bell listed as having a catch in stats from the game? When did that happen or is that just a statistical error? And if it did, why? Did Bell move from DB to WR without anyone knowing?

Got home last night about 1:15am. I have not read the other posts yet, but I am sure many of you sat through the rain, as did I, and got SOAKED . It was brutal. Then was ready to head home after the 1st quarter. Stayed to the very end. WVU has some very good players. AU has some good players on D. Thorpe had his best game ever, IMO. Tackling drills are a MUST this week. I am tired of seeing guys (from many teams) just drive to drive into the runner with helmet and shoulder pads and knock him down. Whatever happened to wrapping someone up?

Thanks Aero. It's just weird that auburntigers.com list the mistake as well.

Can't remember where it was, but I recall looking at a major sports site's stats during the MSU game and seeing T'Sharvan Bell as having thrown a half dozen passes for 50 something yards. Thought it was on ESPN, but just checked and it's correct now, so who knows.

I did notice the little 'stats line' at the top of the screen frequently listed Wes Byrum's rushing yardage. I knew having the same number as Kodi would cause some confusion.

I expect ex-HCs like Davie to be terrible with names, and to get off on 'themes' that they continue to hammer on throughout the game despite what's actually taking place on the field. After all, they spent most of their adult lives working in a completely different profession.

I almost felt sorry for Mark Jones, however. He was absolutely dreadful, and his lack of preparation was embarassing. It's one thing to mispronounce McCalebb's name throughout the entire contest - but how could anyone consistently mistake Burns for Todd and vice versa?

2. That they thought the announcers sucked as much as we did.

3. They did not give a lot of SEC luv, think SEC speed is overated

4. That they cuss alot...alot!

5. That they think Auburn is known as a medium tier SEC team

Our kisk return team is no better than our kick off team. Out up guys are too far up. By the time our guys receive the ball, the cover team has fought off AU's blocks and ran past the blockers. I think Jay wrote AU averaged 17 yards on kick returns. As C Barlkey would say, 'that's turrible.'

After a night to think about it, I still say I hate espn almost as much as uat. And I wasn't even listening to their moronic audio; had it muted and listened to the radio.

I'm gonna watch it on the dvr and see how many times they missed the snap on one of our plays. I'd guess at least 15, not to mention that we got to see nothing of the formation and motion before the snap. All so that could show some kind of nonsense that had nothing to do with the game.

Fox has the best coverage of anybody right now - they just show the game. What a great idea.

So.. here's the thing.

LT had one false start. No missed assignments, no sacks, no hurries. (False start is no lost play, just 5 yard added to a down.)

RT missed some of assignments resulting in one sack (more than 5 yards, and a lost play), a few broken plays and hurries (more lost yardage)

LG / Center missed an assignment resulting in a major hurting on QB (lost confidence, hurt QB, lost yardage)

Guess which one got / will get criticized the most by the Auburn fans?

1:55 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

At this point, we need to stop critizing Ziemba and compliment him on his consistency. He is good for 1 false start a week.

In all reality, Ziemba has been great this year. He is a major cog to the success of this offense. He just has unfortunate habit of anticipating a snap early once a game.

Sorry that it bothers you, it's a fact of the game.

You seem to miss every time when people are saying despite the penalties, the kid is playing hard and playing well...you seem to only bring up the one sentence that apparently bothers you.

Even the broadcasters for Auburn last night brought it up and they said they have no idea, it happens at home and on the road that Ziemba will jump a time or two per game. I hope it doesn't upset you when the commentators bring it up as much as it seems to on here.

The powers to be would probably kick me off any Poll after a short run. If you are going to place teams in weak conferences in the top 10 or 25 after they win a game or two. Then you should ignore the glory teams of years past and put undefeated teams in the top and when they lose they drop below ALL undefeated teams. As the undefeated weak sisters lose they will drop out and you can bring the pretty boys back in.

2:49 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

RK: T-zac, Fannin, Tate, Trott have all dropped passes, Todd has made bad decisions, at least once in a game. Each of those cost a lot more than a false start.

If everything worked perfectly every game will go to overtime with 210 points / team.

I've been resisting to say this but whining about Ziemba's false start is idiotic.

Do you recall how many times these espn commentators showed the Ramsey's chop block? Do you know how often chop blocks happen?

Do you know there was a chop block in the last game, by a WVU guy? Did you see it replayed? even once?

So.. whatever dude. You didn't respond to the original post.

Heck, they even trashed their QB, Brown. Yea, 5 INTs stinks, but without him, they wouldn't have been in this game. It was just wonderful to watch how the mood shifted. They are convinced they beat themselves.

They also said that Todd was terrible, but later said that our QB was killing them. Fans are a hoot.

The one bright spot on special teams would have to be the return of a confident Wes Byrum. I couldn't believe a long FG was attempted after the flood Saturday, but Byrum nailed it. He has been a pleasant surprise in a not very good year thus far for special teams.

You aren't going to see Todd playing on Sundays, but I was impressed with him against WV. Yea, I saw some bad throws, but he didn't make the mistakes that kill you and we basically won the game on his arm. Who would have thought noodles could taste so good?

Aufan,

We also had a punt return for positive yardage once last night, so that's a step forward as well.

However our kickoff coverage and returns seem to leave a lot to be desired...especailly when we have a coach who is dedicated to special teams.

Blogger AllenD said...

JGT - why still no love for AU in the polls? Realize, winning will take care of itself, but Kansas, Washington, North Carolina? Hard to compare apples for apples, but think AU wins > wins by some of these.

Washington with a big win, but they beat second string QB on a USC team that doesn't seem to have the identity of previous USC teams.

It is your ballot however.

Serious question - How do you think most pollsters fill them out? Based on what they see on ESPN highlights?, based on perception? the boutique pick of the moment(buzz)? perceived record based on schedule and trying to pick where they are expected to finish? Just curious as to how you think these guys make their picks, they cannot be watching all of the games and at some point ESPN becomes the kingmakers based on which highlights they show (and Herbstreet does have AU ranked).

4:16 PM
Blogger Jet said...

It'll take a win in Knoxville to get in the poll. But don't worry. Enjoy this team. They may win 7-8-9 games, but you know they will battle. When the depth fills out, look out.

Actually, I am feeling a bit better about our depth, especially on defense. We have played a lot of people.

As for the polls, keep in mind that we have not beaten a top 25 team. While I think West Virginia will eventually be fairly highly ranked, assume Brown comes back, but they aren't there yet. Be patient. I see a dominating performance against UT coming. If we force them to pass, game over dude.

What has impressed me is the low number of mistakes we are making. We have had one interception. With the number of deep balls Todd has thrown, I wouldn't blame him if we had 4 or 5 INTs at this point.

Also, we aren't fumbling and the penalties weren't a problem against WV. I read that last season against MSU we had seven penalties between two offensive line players. You do that and you cripple your offense. We are playing smart football.

AllenD: You watch my poll. You know how I vote. You think I should drop North Carolina to make room for Auburn?

Washington just beat the No. 3 team.

Kansas ... watched em twice so far and they have a good team there. I consider them better than Auburn at this point.

AllenD - I agree; I'm surprised AU isn't ranked. IF we didn't knock their QB out for several games, then I think WV wins the Big East and finishes in the top 10. And then everyone will wonder why an 11 point win over a team that good didn't get us ranked.

And BYU will continue to clobber their weak competition and maintain a high ranking, even though they got murdered at home by an ACC team that very nearly lost to Jax State. Maybe Jax State ought to be ranked.

I'd rank AU ahead of most of the 2-1 teams, and several of the 3-0 teams that are ranked.

If we beat TN, we'll only be beating an unranked 2 loss team; ditto ARK. It may take an 8-0 start to get us in. ;)

We beat UT on the road and sit at 5-0, we'll be ranked.

Depending on what happens to ranked teams next week, we could go in at 4-0.

It really doesn't matter.

I don't understand what you have seen to put Pitt in the top 10, I haven't watched them play, so maybe you have seen something I haven't. But they haven't beaten anybody all that impressive, and they lost their top producer from last year.

And Yes I think Auburn looks much better than UNC at this point.

Jay, any thoughts regarding the last part of my diatribe? Any idea on how your counterparts assemilate (hmmm, sp?) data for their vote? As a team that wasn't expected to do much, yet a 3-0 team, we don't get much in the way of video highlights, nor buzz.

Jay - 3 specifically: BYU, GA Tech, FSU. What has any of them done to deserve to be ranked over AU?

Obviously, the rest of the world agrees with you and not me, but I'm used to that.

I honestly wished that they didn't even start ranking teams until about week 6 of the season. That would give teams time to either show what they do or what they don't have. It would also give time to weed out the pretenders and set up the real contenders.

I don't think Auburn should be ranked yet because I feel that what we have proven so far is that we are not a mediocre SEC team and at best, we are a good, not a very good, but a good team. I am proud of them especially for the fight they put up last night. If they continue to play like that, don't give up and continue to improve, they will be ranked before the season is over. I sincerely doubt that we would win a game against a ranked opponent if we played overall as we did last night. Nevertheless WAR EAGLE, go get them TIGERS.

Think UNC gets much love for their HC - probably too much love.

Some of the national guys don't have them ranked as highly.

Washington?!?

In the top 25?!?

While I understand that they beat a mediocre/overrated USC team, I think it is ridiculous to think they are the 25th best team in college football

IV - agree, wish polls didn't start until Oct.

Jury is still out on AU. I'll say that about many of the teams in the top 25. So at some point it's perception and good PR.

As painful as it is for me to say (blasphemous), I think alabammer would beat the Florida team that played yesterday.

I don't understand some of the pollsters. Like.. who the hell ranked Nebraska #25?

they have beaten the mighty Florida Atlantic and Arkansas State, and lost to VTech.

Allen D,

It pains me also to say it, but I agree, yesterday, the evil empire would probably would have beaten the Florida team that played UT yesterday.

It is hard to compare AU with UNC. Both West Virginia and UNC beat ECU by about the same margin. We beat West Virginia. Does that mean we are better than UNC? No. There is such a thing as matchups. We are fine where we currently are ranked. Beating Ball State will mean nothing, but a convincing win against Tennessee should get us in the polls.

I feel that so far, AU has proven that it is better than MSU and Vandy, the mediocre teams of the West and East. I think maybe we have proven that we can play with the likes of Tenn., Arky, SC and Kentucky. We will have our opportunities to prove that we can play with UGA, Ole Miss, LSU and Bummer. So give it time, we will be ranked if we deserve it.

Washington definitely deserves to be in the top 25. They hung close with number 11 LSU and beat number 3 USC.

I'm waiting to see if I think LSU should really be number 11 too. I'm thinking 14ish. Talent but some missing identity.

I do view LSU as a team with a good chance to belly flop. Their wins haven't been that convincing. They have MSU next week but then Georgia followed by Florida. Unfortunately they have a week off before they play us.

let's just win 'em all. then we don't have to worry about rankings.

oh wait, this is AU, so we do have to worry about rankings...

we better hope UF, OU, USC etc. lose two each if we go undefeated. then we may (grudgingly and against espn's wishes) get a BCS invite over them.

You can save a lot of time by watching the game on the web instead of CSS. No commercials / breaks, entire game in 1.5 hours and you can rewind.

All game's videos are hosted on SEC's website. You can get the video (I think it's second from the top) here:
http://www.secdigitalnetwork.com/video/auburn.aspx

Wake, you're going to get on me for Pitt now? I've had them at 15 or higher the whole way.

Be real: You don't care until you think Auburn is getting snubbed, then my logic doesn't make sense.

Washington just beat the No. 3 team.

Oklahoma is good. Period.

All the teams from 20-30 are approximately the same right now. I just don't see Auburn as one of the top 25 teams right now.

What was our snap count yesterday? lots of meerkat.

did eltoro overrun plays, play out of position?, or? didn't hear his name called often (at all?). Seems like I remember him overrunning a play or two.

For instance, Eltoro missed a sure tackle (along with six or so of his friends) on ND on that long romp up the middle.

If we beat TN we will be ranked.

Reasons we don't deserve to be ranked now:
1. Not-so-special special teams
2. Slow, sloppy starts
3. Inability to run on WVU
4. Roof-is-falling, Jekyll and Hyde defense
5. We haven't beaten a team that deserves to be ranked

Reasons we should be ranked:
1. 3-0, 1-0
2. Take away 2008 and we would be. It's all about perception.

NOTE: beating TN won't be easy.
