Gene Chizik speaks, 9/6
Hey everyone. Gene Chizik just spent 30 minutes or so chatting with reporters about the Issues of The Day.
Here's an overview:
Photo credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn University
Here's an overview:
- General thoughts: ``I thought they played through some times ... of adversity. We overcame some adverse situations. We've got a lot of work to do. We've got a lot of corrections. We've got a long way to go to compete in this league."
- On Auburn not using freshman WRs in major roles Saturday: ``Offensively, we're just going what defenses give us. I wouldn't read too much into that.
- On the 93-yard pass from Chris Todd to Terrell Zachery: ``As games progress, we do a good job of studying people. We scout the (defensive) people during the game."
- Chizik elaborating on that idea: ``Everybody's got a job on gameday. What we don't do is watch the game. We're not gamewatchers. Everybody's got a job to watch this, everybody's got a job to watch that, everybody's got a job to watch this without going into details. You got to do your job. They can watch the game on TV the next day. We're working and we're specifically looking at things that we need to be paying attention to."
- Chizik wouldn't identify which staffer made the assessments that led to the deep plays to Zachery and Darvin Adams.
- On Nosa Eguae's situation: ``It's a foot injury. It's nothing that's really serious. It's a day-to-day, week-to-week thing."
- On Eltoro Freeman's situation: ``We felt like he was really close. You just have to use good judgment."
- On if Mario Fannin now should be considered a receiver: ``Not necessarily. Mario's still going to run the football. Mario's still going to catch the football."
- On if it's "fair" to say Fannin is the No. 3 tailback: ``You could say that. The reason I hesitate on that is because you can move him around to so many places. If you look at number of carries, yes. That doesn't necessarily mean anything. Mario plays so many different positions because he can."
- On the possibility of making changes at punt returner: ``We'll have to look at that real closely. It's hard for you to run people down in two-a-days -- hit 'em live -- and expect them to be healthy. Remember, it's not always the kick returner's (fault)."
- Chizik said coaches officially award special teams efforts and exploits, not offense and defense. ``It's a dirty job, but you have to be good at it."
- On some injured players (ie Hot Carter and Freeman) not being on the sideline last night: ``A lot of guys who are injured don't want to be down there. It's hard on them. Sometimes when they're injured, they don't want to come to the game. Don't read anything into that. We probably had 30 or 40 kids in the stands last night.

War Eagle!
second!
FAH Cincy
Aero - T Sharvan Bell is 3rd on the depth chart @ safety.
Just back from the Plains. I am exhausted! Such an awesome weekend though.
Addressing several things from the last post:
I wore my HABOTN tshirt until time for the game, but didn't run into any other hotties walking around.
I did get to meet Kristina for a few minutes and had a really nice long visit with THT and Mrs. THT. I so enjoyed meeting them all. Hotties are such wonderful people.
Scottie, sorry we weren't there. We got to the spot about 10:25, so we just missed you. Should be same time, same place next weekend.
I echo the sentiments about the golden rescue and goldens being the most awesome dogs. We have had 4 over the years and now my daughter works with the golden rescue in TN. So if anyone up that way needs a wonderful pet, let me know.
Just curious. Is "We've got a long way to go to compete in this league." on the first page or second page of the coach speak manual?
Jay G. Great stories in today's paper. Enjoyed your articles and Brain Z's column.
My in laws have a golden retriever. That dog lets kids climb all over his head and pull his ears and do anything. Incredibly docile, but still capable of running around in the yard and having fun. Good dogs.
Ole Nutt is not as impressive as I had thought they would be.
Cincy - So glad you got to meet and greet with the hotties. by the way, you did GREAT on the Pickem!
I am looking forward to the use to be bowl tomorrow night, Miami versus Florida State.
On Nosa Eguae's; It's a day-to-day, week-to-week thing."
Big difference from day-to-day and week-to-week.
I encourage anyone wishing to get a dog to go to a rescue orginization. I got my 103# puppy about 6 months ago from a rescue organization. He is the sweetest pup you will ever meet. I have only seen him bark about 3 times, unless he is having a puppymare. Those three times were all when someone surprised him. He is highly pettable and I have had kids as young as 2 years old pet him. The only reason I bother to have him on a leash is because having a 103# puppy just coming walking up to you can startle some people.
Anybody scared of Ole Myth?
I'm not...and you shouldn't be either.
Right now Ole Miss is covering...and that sucks out loud.
Never Mind.
That is all.
What's the line? Surely you didn't bet on Memphis and Tommy West?
17.
Yep.
I'm glad the rumors in the stadium about Nosa's injury weren't correct.
Replay of the game last night is on CSS right now (if you get CSS).
According to vegasinsider.com, we're opening as 12 1/2 point favorites against MSU -- that's about the same as the LA Tech line.....
Funny thing this morning... Had an Auburn "fan" post on my fb page that Chris Todd's arm still sucked...blah blah blah.
If any of the Hotties who are my fb friends would like to set him straight, I'm down with that.
Ole Miss = underwhelming
Ok...now he just said he's still mad about Tub's firing. Go get him.
"Ole Miss is all about title talk this year."
I'm not sure how that announcer could say that without letting out a little laugh.
Oh wow, how would anyone complain about Todd's arm now. Just tell the guy he shouldn't drink and post.
You can tell him Steve. I've preached til I'm blue in the face.
J-Z...The folks that know enuff inside story on Tubs have good reason to be mad. Certain members of the PTB tweaked and interfered until he left. At the very end, he treated AU badly, but if you knew all of the PTB issues since 2004 that haven't got out, you probably wouldn't blame him.
Todd has a solid-average SEC arm. We'll take that right now. Anyone that says that's not the case, needs to first learn how to study film and athletic fundamentals.....then look at those game films.
I'm adding a few quotes to the main page ...
Congrats to the University of South Alabama on their first win in their first football game in school history against Hargrave Military. Give this program a few years, and they will be top notch!
CTT had apparently lost the respect of the players. Yes, there is more than one person to blame. But it is time to move on. I appreciate CTT giving us one of the most successful periods in school history including the most successful four year stretch in school history. He deserves our respect, but it is time to move on.
By the way, I still find it so ironic that so many people criticized the Chizik hire. I find it bizarre. You judge someone by what he does, and Chizik has done an excellent job, especially in terms of pulling together a staff that is cohesive. I expected more growing pains.
Ole Nutt seems to have hit their stride.
Great game last night. I had new seats which I enjoyed sooo much. The team exceeded my expectations. My observations:
1. Nick Fairley/A.Coleman-great games, they were all over the place.
2. Wes Byrum-looked good, hopefully the soph slump is over.
3. Kodi in the wildcat I liked it, I was so glad he scored. He needs to work on the not running inside the tackle each time though.
4. Ben Tate-He played well with the exception of the fumble. He will be our workhorse inside runner.
5. McAlleb- He is so small, but so damn fast. He can do alot.
6. Chris Todd-He had a cannon and threw well and managed the game well.
7. Herring-Considering our injuries and that he has not played in so long he did well. I still want Freeman back.
8. Face Mask Penalties-I lost count.
9. DB's I thought they played well at times, we still need some work and depth.
10. OL did well I think they play much better at this years weight and with this type of offense.
I feel better now going into the MSU game. Beating Jackson State doesnt tell me much. The fact they share qbs is interesting for us.
Very good news about USA's first football game.
I do not allow Auburn bashing on my FB. I simply take out the trash.
One main point I noticed on Mario... when he caught the ball he used his hands and eyes... he did not use his body..
He will be great
I am loving the SEC digital network and being able to review the game film. This is wonderful.
I forgot about that stuff, Steve! What's the web address please and thank you.
The SEC Dig Net can kiss my ... um ... nevermind.
Holy cow! I had no idea it was so late. Got home 3 hours ago and promptly fell asleep.
WAR EAGLE!!!!
MrsTHT and I were so honored to meet ScottieB, Matt, & Leah(?), Zookeeper & hubby, and Cincytiger & family. We had a wonderful day in the Loveliest Village.
Here it is Omnica. It is a wonderful thang.
JayGT - I thought it was weird that Craig Stevens lined up covering WRs a few times in the first half. Did anyone ask Coach Chiz or Coach Roof about that?
Stevens is a multi-purpose LB.
Chris Todd did have a good game - A 'Cannon' may be going a little overboard
Thanks Steve.
I thought Stevens played very well, but I don't think one of his purposes is DB. He just isn't quick enough for that. I don't know if they realized that and made changes or not, but off hand I don't remember seeing him line up vs WRs in the 2nd half.
I really stink at pick 'em but I almost nailed the AU La Tech score ( I had it 37-9)
Todd's arm looked very good. A cannon is probably fair to say, but lets see how long it lasts.
Okay, they got me. I was reviewing film and noticed Tyrik Rollison playing linebacker. Whoops!!! That was Josh Bynes. They are both number 17. I thought I had a scoop there for a minute.
I was thinking last night after the win that it would be great if we followed it up with a huge commitment. Today there are rumors that LB Ladarius Owens has committed to us but no confirmations yet. That would be huge!!
Gulley sure looked to be the choice after Mario's second flubbed punt-return attempt. Wasn't Zachery supposed to be in the running for punt-returning at one time? He returned punts in HS if I am not mistaken.
Congrats on the new nick AUFan.
I would prefer to not see Fannin or FAH on special teams. They are such keys to our offense, I don't like the risk. We have a lot of young talented receivers. Let them handle returning kicks.
BigCat - Rivals says it's official that LaDarius HAS committed to Auburn.
Great news on Owens. Quite some time back I read where Bama may have gotten in the race for him. He is one recruit we didn't need to get away.
Thanks for the update Monica!! That is great great great!! He has the size and speed to contribute immediately if needed.
Next season our depth issues at linebacker won't exist. I believe we already have 4 commits. With the experience our current linebackers are getting, we should be good to go next season. I would be surprised if we sign another linebacker, although if that kid from Conneticutt wants a scholarship, I am sure he will be here.
I have so much respect for James Owens, and enjoyed watching him play at AU. I would have been so sad if his nephew had gone elsewhere.
LaDarius - you've been a member of the AU family since the day you were born. Can't wait to see you suit up for the Tigers!!!! WAR EAGLE!!!
I have been reviewing the game and LaTech's touchdown. They went to their senior TE matched up against Adam Herring, who is a sophmore with limited practice time. He actually had pretty good coverage and Thorpe tried to help out. It was simply a good matchup for LaTech.

Monica, thanks for the Owens update. That's one guy I didn't want to see AU lose to The Dark Side.
Steve, the new nick ain't original, but it's the best I could come up with. Thanks.
The Goldmine is reporting LaDarius too. Looks like it is a done deal.
AUFan, optimisticAUFan would work:)
Less than an hour until True Blood. I can't wait to see the black eyed people, not to be confused with the Blackeyed Peas.
Good pick.
And thank you, Moniker, for locating T-Bell.
Now we gotta locate monsieur Phillipe Perre-louis.
With JZ's permission I'll now officially congratulate Sensi for winning the HABOTN Pickem.
Congrats Sensi!
Jay, any idea what PPL's status is? Have you like got a picture with a lot of faces in it where we can play where's PPL? I think he would be a good choice as a kick returner.
Tiger Walk La Tech
Reckon I'll go to "365" LOL
That's what I call you anyway!
I must object to the pickem results. I should be the winner. I picked all the games right. It is just that some teams scored the wrong number of points. I shouldn't be blamed for their mistakes.
Most do Mon ... I just wanted to say something ...
ha 365 I think it's been well established that substance isn't required. :-)
Our offens averaged 302.9 yds/gm. Against LaTech, we had more than that in the second half. It's two, two, two games in one:)
Pregame Video
I just watched BYU's winning touchdown over Okrahoma. Okrahoma had 4 people covering one receiver and 0 people covering the one that caught the ball. Duh!!!!
AUfan 365, I apologize if I stole your handle. I didn't realize there was a AUfan already. If I need to change it, just let me know.
Thanks for the pre-game video Omnica. It was great. I was afraid they were going to play Eye of the Tiger again. Somehow, I think I have heard it before.
Hey My friend ... we are all AUFans in here!!! Welcome and I am proud to share ... as Mon said most call me "365" when I post which is seldom ... I just like to lurk, laugh and read ... you are already signed up using it and by all means keep it.
and when I say all are AUFans, I include FSJ ... he just won't admit to it!!
True Blood = repeat
grrrr
Monica, I think they wanted to wait until after Labor Day weekend to show the last episode.
This season has been great. My Big Love countdown will begin after the season finale of True Blood.
Man, I hate the True Blood rerun thing. And Entourage isn't coming on either!!! Crap, Crap, Crap!!!
I tailagted (drank) for a few hours at the USA game at Ladd yesterday. I really throught Hargrave would beat them. Wore my Auburn gear and got lots of War Eagles- I can't sell out. Got back here at 4:30 to prepare (drink) for the Auburn game. Lots of people left the USA game early b/c of the Auburn and Alabama games. There really are only two programs in this state but they are a nice story. (not to mention Dameyunne Craig and Kurt Crain coach there)
Everyone should read this article about LaDarius Owens. I still cannot believe that I am old enough to have been around when black players were not allowed on Auburn's team. One of the great things about football is that it knows no color. Any Auburn player would be welcome in my home. Anyone who had a problem with that would not. Ziemba isn't a white football player. McCaleb isn't a black football player. They are just football players and kids whose hard work I appreciate very much. They are Auburn men and nobody who is truly a college football fan could be a racist. There are great players out there, and they come in all colors.
Steve - that was a nice read. Thanks.
Just got to say it one more time
I ADMIRE KODI BURNS.
Not only did he stand up and say what he said. But after watching the re-run it is obvious he worked his tail off to contribute to this team. He did both with his play and great enthusiasm. What a great guy and player.
