LIVE BLOG: Chizik presser
Welcome to Gene Chizik's weekly presser.
Photo credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn University
- Opening statement: "We're going to have to play a much better football ... to beat a ver, very good West Virginia team. This will get us another step in the direction of finding out how good we are."
- What do they have to work on?: "Special teams. We're putting ourselves 80 yards away on every kickoff return. That's glaring. Our punt-return issues -- those are glaring. Our coverage teams ... we're giving up too many hidden yards. We've got to measure every inch. Offensively and defensively, just the things you see."
- On the offense: ``We didn't know what to expect. We still don't know what to expect. We've only played two games."
- On complacency: ``I don't think that's who we're going to let them be ... and that's not who they really are. I don't know how a player could walk out (of a meeting) and feel good about it."
- On replacing Tommy Trott: "Tommy is day by day. We've got a plan." He also plans to give Lutzenkirchen a bigger role. Chizik also mentioned Gabe McKenzie.
- On fans who (allegedly) are penciling in Auburn as the Western Division champions: "They are? I didn't know they were." Goes on predictable rant about how Auburn fans are the greatest ever.
- On having four home games top open the season: ``It's a building block every week with a better team -- or a team that gives you different issues." He praised West Virginia for its speed.
- ``We're a work in progress. I'm not sure what we are yet."
- On Noel Devine: ``He's exactly what you look at -- you tackle him a few times, then the next thing you know he's hitting his head on the goal post."
- He says West Virginia is a good "run-fitting" team. Also praises the team's speed again. Chizik says it's a 3-4 deal.
- He loves the West Virginia quarterback. ``He brings a lot to the table for them."
- On if Auburn is an under-the-radar team: ``I don't know. We just do what we do."
- ``I think we're ready to play this type of game right now. Had we opened with them, I don't know if I had said that."
- On Ted Roof addressing Auburn's offense earlier this week: "It all ties in. Everybody's connected. For us to call a game defensively and feel like the offense can get us out of binds periodically -- that's very important. And you can flip it. It's a comforting feeling."
- On how the defense benefits from working against Malzahn's offense: ``It helps a lot. Our guys have been, for the most part, have been pretty good about being able to stand out there and survive -- considering how few backups we have."
- He likes the offensive line: ``When you rush for 390 yards, it's not all tailbacks. They have not arrived, but I think they're getting better. They're playing together. That's what I'm excited about."
- On Kodi Burns: ``He's an Auburn man. That's what he is. That's what we does. That's what we've been saying since Day One."
- That's a WRAP.

New substance.
Guess I pushed too hard.
Haha, I think it was I that pushed too hard.
Just felt like it needed to be said Sensi. You know everyone on here that says anything remotely negative about AU is a bammer. They have to be. Right?
I had a wonderfully underachieving Fantasy team this past week. I'm glad I got out the gate getting stomped by 40points in the first matchup.
False start, Ehyou.
I'm disappointed. You will be the topic of discussion for the remainder of the thread. You may or may not be bashed, trashed or thrashed, depending on your perspective.
Who's a bammer? Sensi is most definitely not a bammer, he's just skeptical. It's ok. He'll get on board at some point.
WERK - just sent you an e-mail regarding B'ham hotels. There are several good B&B's down by Legion Field. Tough to get your car out of their backyards sometimes, though. (Kidding, except about the e-mail).
I was so scared of a false start it's all I could think about.
As long as JZ likes my cankles I'll be OK.
yeah, those cankles have me all weirded out yo.
Nice legs.
Eddie...we had a power outage and just got back up.
Probably. Really depends on how well the AU Dline does stopping the inside run and how much/when WVa runs outside and passes. The better the Dline does keeping pressure off the LBs, the later before we will need to go to the nickel. If WVa is running outside/passing alot, then the nickel will be needed sooner.
If AU can heavily power run the entire second half, then we could win by 10-14. I'm just not sure we're there yet.
I love when I get off to a great start in fantasy football, Drew Brees has a career day, I see my team has racked up 145 pts...I look up and I'm 0-1. WTH?
So, Hoopie, you are saying we gotta stop that little inside trap?
Geez Sean, 145 should have you beating anyone
Sensi - that was GREAT! I'm sure I've seen it before, but that makes me laugh still.
Happy Birthday Norm (or so Facebook tells me)!!!
Also, OT, but the TV guy just called and told me that the Main Control Unit on my 2-year old 46" Sony Bravia XBR will need to be replaced at a price of $674.99. My husband is now contemplating whether we fix it or buy a new one. :-(
Kathy: The SAME component blew out on my LG last fall. I was a few days past my warranty, but LG actually honored the repair. I was shocked.
Prices have dropped so much since 2007. You can get a very nice set for $799 now.
Sensi..haha...I forgot all about that brilliance. Joe Kines...a nice representative....BAMMER.
Joe Kines, the Bard of West Vance.
Who asked the question re Auburn fans making plans for Atlanta?
A TV guy.
Kathy - thanks. It's actually tomorrow but now you're ahead of the curve.
Ball State lost to North Texas Mean Green Easy Cleans and.. get this... D1AA New Hampshire Wildcats.
They've chopped off the first part of their name. Now they are called 'State'.
I thought the guy asking the question about Atlanta Reservations was Steve in disquise.
(stuff)mydadsays quote of the day:
"Don't listen to the (cat) side of you when you make a decision. People gravitate towards being a (cat). Remove the (cat), son."
The tv is out of warranty and my husband is definitely leaning toward a new purchase now that prices have fallen. We will definitely have something there by Saturday so he can watch his team play those high school boys.
Who's his team, Kathy?
Kathy- I highly recomend Vizio products, especially for the money. I love mine and they are some of the cheapest.
Joe Kines was born on a train.
Sensi, thanks for the Joe Kines link. He is my favorite Alabama coach and the only Alabama coach I would love to have as a color commentator on the Auburn network.
Those cankles made me snort. LOL.
Cincytiger, where ever you are, when I ordered my new Auburn tag last week, the lady said if you already have an Auburn personalized tag, you would automatically receive the new tag in the mail when they come out.
Are your feet still sore from those heels, j-z?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNygYvp9XBs
Scott...I still have bird legs.
Michael... No.
If those were JZ's legs, he would have had high socks on.
And they'd have peanut butter cookie crumbs on them.
I hear Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.
That's not true.
I heard that same thing, WERK.
Well, I broke down and got the 6-game ticket package. Gotta live it up while the wife and I are still young and childless ;-)
Get Down Goblin is the best video of all time. Here ends the discussion.
Beyonce has nothing on Get Down Goblin.
But are they good Auburn men?
I wonder if Jan Terri dips.
Jan Terri chews. (whether it's cud or tobacco, we can't be sure)
Is Jan Terri FAH?
Jan Terri had one of the best videos of all time.
I think even Obama would agree with that, rk.
Could Jan Terri play linebacker?
My sister is interviewing for Diamond Dolls at AU and I'm quizing her on her AU baseball trivia.
So, let me here it Baseball fans... What's your vest AU baseball trivia tidbit?
When was the last time we were any good?
Who threw a perfect game in 2003?
Q. What is the best baseball game every year?
A. 25 cent hot dog night.
Ok. I expect answers to accompany some of these questions.
My memory is not that good.
Eric Brandon threw the perfect game.
He didn't have 9 perfect innings the rest of his career, but for one night he was great.
When was the last time we were any good?
Tupac Says A long time ago
Q: Last time Auburn qualified for the College World Series?
A: 1997.
That's just amazing it's been 12 years.
Q: In the same academic year, this former Tiger star was an All-American football player and a starter for an AU College World Series team. Who is he?
A: Frank Sanders
It is sad. That is just plain sad.
I remember attending a recruiting camp that summer. There was a lot of excitement around the program back then.
I really don't know what derailed it.
Correct the question ... CWS one year ... the following fall an All American.
Who was the 1997 SEC player of the year?
Tim Hudson
15-2 with a 2.97 ERA
.396 with 18 HR's and 95 RBI
Auburn has 6 SEC baseball regular season titles, the last when I was at Auburn in 1978.
Auburn has 3 SEC Tournament titles, the last in 1998.
was that 2003 or 2002? I remember the game. It was fun. He was excited. I trust you're right, but I've been thinking for all of these years it was '02.
Why are you so sexy? Oh,wait, that's not baseball trivia.
Big Snacks, Brandon's pefecto may have been 2002.
For bonus points, you can have someone name the team that Brandon pitched against.
The Murray State Racers.
Yeah, it was March 2,2002 against Murray State. If I remember correctly, he got to bat, too. He just stood in the batter's box and giggled.
First(only?) 9-inning perfect game in Auburn history.
I killed puppet hour with a tale of a giggling pitcher.
Maybe puppets just killed everyone else but us
that's a good guess....should we yell Hottie Hooooo to see if anyone is alive, or are we supposed to be quiet and still?
Picks are up....some tough games this week.
I've missed a lot lately; what did ya'll do to Monica? I wanted to tell her about my trip to Brewton.
SteveFC, I usually agree with you, but I think WV is the most important game of the year. We had to win the first 4 to have a good year, and it looked the toughest before the season started. Now it really looks the toughest. We could be on the way to 10-2 with a win; 6-6 with a loss.
Glad to see Sensi picking WV. He's been a great contrarian indicator so far. Sure hope Eddie picks AU to win in a rout.
Coosa,
I've picked Auburn to win both games.
Self inflicted wounds always cut the deepest.
Sensi - Just picking at you. You did pick the games to be closer than Eddie did. I think. Maybe my memory is bad. But I know you still haven't had any kool-aid. ;)
Yeah, I picked them close. I'm not used to Auburn scoring truck loads of points.
I haven't had the kool-aid. I'm just following what Chizik said. He's not drinking any of it either.
He lies.
Duh. They all lie.
They vote in a poll they know nothing about at all.
Shug didn't lie, but that was a different world.
Sensi, I thought you picked WV 35, AU 31? Did I read that wrong?
No, you read that right, Steve.
This is the first time I've picked the other way this season.
My SEC Week Three Picks are available for consumption.
Thanks Sensi. I actually read some of your later posts wrong. I don't mind honest opinion.
No problem, Steve. I appreciate you reading them.
Hey, the fan in me hopes I'm wrong.
It's all in good fun. It's not like I do this for money or glory or that I think I'm right and others are wrong. It's just the way I look at it.
For the record..I expect Auburn to have a tougher time but pull out the win in the fourth quarter.
Faker says... 28-20...and the Hotties rejoice (and apparently spit popcorn)
Thoughts on Sensi picks:
I think UT will score, but UF probably wins by at least 3 scores. UT does have a solid defense. I suspect they try to shorten the game with their running game.
The Vandy/MSU game is one of the more intriguing of the week. I agree Vandy wins a close game, but an MSU upset wouldn't surprise me.
Arkansas/Georgia
I think it will be a higher scoring game and Arkansas wins a close one. UGA will find a way to lose this one.
Alabama/North Texas
You have this a little closer than I think it will be, but Bama will clearly win.
Auburn/West Virginia
I think Auburn wins this one convincingly. West Virginia will get their points. Auburn will just get a lot more. The special teams could kill Auburn with mistakes, but I expect them to perform better. As for the West Virginia offense, I like our corners and defensive line. I think they are better geared to play a passing opponent rather than a power running team. If the linebackers hold up, we should win going away, but I wouldn't be shocked to see West Virginia put up 30 something on us.
Don't crush my dreams Sensi. If we end up loosing I will feel like I have been Kanyed.
On defense, we need the defensive line to get pressure on the QB without having to blitz. I think Coleman and Goggans could have a good game here. Also, this could be the game the bull makes his presence felt.
Good thoughts, Steve.
The shutout in the Swamp is probably a stretch, but I just don't know how the UT offense will score. I didn't think about Eric Berry putting one in on the defensive side, so that could totally happen.
As far as high scores, I'm funny about that because I can never seem to convince myself of a lot of points in conference games, but I admit I'm not good at picking scores.
A shutout is certainly possible. If UT gets behind early and has to pass, stick a fork in them.
First time on a city bus today. Not too sketchy. Nobody speaks English, and I'm confident that I'm the only one who has a clue what the Rosa Parks Dedication on the front seat is all bout, but It's kinda nice. Definitely worth it to save $12-$15/day on parking. ...oh, and I can't get that Violent Femmes song outta my head. "Hey Mr. Driver man, drive that thing fast...."
PF...
The key to riding public transit is to make the other passengers scareder of you than you are of them.
What's for dinner Grampa?
PF, I always find that ratcheting a few shells through my Glock keeps the crazies a few seats away.

I'd be afraid of me. Big white dude in a tie and nice shoes, obviously the only English speaker on the bus...You remember when Will Smith shot the little girl in Men in Black? Same principle. Something doesn't jive. Fortunately, they don't realize that I'm just a miser.
If you want to get at Sensi tonight, join us live on the Podcast at the below link and call in. We go live in about 14 minutes.
Auburn Football Insider Podcast
My sound card's busted. Can I call in and just stay on the line the whole show and listen?
Coach T, A Blog by UNA Football Coach Terry Bowden....is it really necessary to advertise something that he gave up on before really ever starting (the blog, not the coaching gig- he's doing okay at that)?
That UNA team Bowden has up there is sick.
Swine Flu?
That blog makes me kinda sad.
They're basically a division I-A team playing division II football. They should be playing on their home turf in mid-December for all the marbles.
Sure thing, Peter.
Multi tasking in the Nooga...
Police were called to Cloverdale Loop to check out a report of a woman mowing the grass with a baby in her arms. The caller was concerned about the well-being of the baby.
Lisa Meadows said her neighbor/realtor/friend Kathy Lawson had mowed the grass for her on a riding mower.
She said she is a new mother and had not finished her breast feeding.
WERK...
Please tell me pics are forthcoming.
Unfortunately the crime blotter didn't come with pics.
