Chizik speaks, 9/13

Hey everyone. I'll gussy this up in a bit.

Let's roll with the substance:
Gene Chizik on the Tigers' special-teams problems: ``We're just not playing well. It's a situation where there are some personnel issues ... and some continuity issues. There's a lot of new names and faces."

  • Chizik on the offensive line's play: ``They're getting it. They need to keep playing physical. I haven't bought stock into them yet. I just don't want anybody to get ahead of this thing."

  • Chizik on Ziemba being split out wide Saturday and begging for the ball: ``Let me assure you ... that'll never happen no matter how much he yells for it."

  • Chizik on Burns as a passer out of the Wildcat: ``He won't be making any throws he's not good at."

  • Chizik on the chances of DE Cam Henderson playing this season: ``None. It's some issues that are ... he won't be playing this year."

  • Chizik asked if that's his discretion: ``They're pretty much all at my discretion."

  • Chizik on Gus Malzahn: ``He's very good at his trade."

  • Chizik asked if he feels anything in common with WVU coach Bill Stewart, who also was an an unsuccessful head coach once upon a time: ``I'm really not familiar with the situation at West Virginia. With me, that's so long ago, it's not something I pay a whole lot of credence to. I don't get validation from the outside world."

  • Though Chizik won't address Tommy Trott's injury, the chatter here is that Auburn's senior tight end has a (relatively) minor injury to an MCL. If he's dealing with a sprain, he shouldn't be out too long. Maybe two or three weeks?

We will blow out WVA mark it down here!!!!

AUnMobilz (Mr. FAH!)

I look at last year and take 2 facts into account.

1. the team did not want it.. they were on self destruct.. us vs. them on the same team..

2. WVU did what we are now doing,,, wear the opp out in the first 2 qtrs then continue to bust big plays.

5:23 PM

Easy Mr FAH ... I hope you are correct........ Lets wait till after game 5 to using phases like morphing into something special! I would love for the team to keep feeding off the emotion.. I noticed at the game when State score 17 unanwsered the fans seemed like Oh Shit here we go again. The BAMMM everyone woke up and you knew then and there things just changed!

We'll miss Trott next week. That hurts. WVU lost two of their top Dline guys in the first half yesterday, but I don't know how long they will be out. Reed Williams and Scooter Berry.

They had huge penalties and I think 4 turnovers yesterday and still won. Their new QB Brown is doing a good job and Noel Devine hasn't really even gotten cranked up yet. Jock Sanders is also someone to watch for them.

Cam Henderson out for the year (non football) I mentioned before fall practice that I thought someone would be gone for grades (he was it)
Hate it for him. he is a great kid.

FAH is FAH. I am amazed at how fast he can turn the corner. You wish he had the ability to shake of an arm tackle because if he could, he would have more jaws dropping. That is all I can see that he could improve on at this point.

5:38 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Trott will surely be missed. Not sure how many plays he was in on this week, but last week, it was like 75 of 77. You don't play that many w/o doing something good out there, with the back ups that AU has.

5:59 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

WVU has more speed than anyone we've played as of yet. However I'm fairly confident we can score a lot of points on them. The key is tackling and not letting them run in space.

5:59 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Two things I learned last night from behind the scenes.

The athletic dept has someone that tells the band when they can play and not play. (Other than the given times ie. touchdown, etc.) Chizik thought it was a distraction at some points and wanted that corrected.

A friend sat in front of Jon Vaughn last night and they discussed the locker room atmosphere. Vaughn says it is like it was in 2004. Some seniors told him they hate that they have only year to play for Chizik.

5:59 PM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

wow, so many others took hits and went out of the game.

Derrick Lykes went out holding his arm, Darvin Adams, Eric Smith, etc. I am sure they are all banged up.

Then you have McNeil, Hawthorne, Egua, Carter...wow the list is long

6:01 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

PDWT: Gabe McKenzie missed spring ball, spent most of 2008 on defense and, even when he was on offense, he was known primarily as an explosive blocker.

Auburn prefers a Trott or Lutz in that role now. So McKenzie plays behind Mario Fannin at "3" ... and, as you can guess, he's not much of a backup. Fannin is much more talented. And more experienced. And refuses to come out of the game.

Where do you want to play Gabe McKenzie? Ahead of Fannin?

re: WVU fans ... they were the nicest fans I saw last year. I hit two tailgates on the way into The Hole. Both groups offered every "consumable" in their cooler and seemed genuinely interested in my thoughts about WVU and the school in general.

I had a good time. It was COLD.

6:03 PM

6:05 PM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

Tate, no it just seems like he is a "healthy" body and he has some athletic ability, you figure he would be plugged in somewhere, but doghouse is the doghouse, but who knows right. He may be the C&C Music Factory of the team, looks and sounds good on the outside, but a sham underneath.

6:05 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Pat - I've had some less than pleasant WVU fan experiences. My nephew was hit my a metal trashcan that was thrown off the back of the stadium once. haha crazy stuff.
You have your half way decent WVU fan and your "holler dwelling" WVU fan. Neither is delightful and one is downright gross. I don't think many of the holler dwellers will be in Auburn.

If Gabe McKenzie is as good an athlete as advertised (and it's hard to tell based on his limited play at Auburn), he'll get a chance on the next level. Whether that's the NFL or whatever takes over for that when the league folds.

6:11 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Herring played a lot Saturday. He came out for Freeman on most run situations after the first series, but did play.

WVU's QB Jarrett Brown so far this year is 43-of-57 passing for 577 yards
4 TD's
1 INT
0 sacks

He's rushed for about 150 yards so far. Ya know he played running back a little last year when he was back up to Pat White. Just sayin...

Coach Stewart says if you drop 3 linebackers into coverage against Jarrett, your front 4 better get him.

I am taking this season one game at a time, but I can't help but be excited and proud of what I've seen so far. This team is playing with confidence and determination, and I couldn't be happier about the job that the coaching staff has done.

There are many changes that I love...for example, not sitting on the ball before the half, the unity of the coaching staff, and of course the offensive onslaught!

I know we have much room for improvement, but so far I'm geeked at what I've seen. War Damn Eagle!!

Just curious if we have more yards on offense than we did all of last year? I was at many of the games last year watching the paint dry and hoping we wouldn't lose HC to the Tenn highschool team that came to town. Last night was beautiful, cool breeze blowing and some serious offensive football. Now I know what Florida fans have been so excited about for 20 years.

As far as the kicking game goes, Durst and our blockers only had 4-5 yards distance between them...MSU had about 7-8 yards distance. I think that the cramped quarters caused alot of those problems.

So far we've won two games that we should have and with authority to boot. I've been drinking the koolaid from day one but still think we need to beat a team like WV before we'll get respect outside of the family.

Our record for total yards is 5469 in 2004.

More importantly, our record for yards per game is 485.0 in Sullivan & Beasley's sophomore year, 1970.

I suspect the former will fall (would require 456 ypg average for 12 game season, less if post regular season game(s) count).

I'd be surprised if the season ypg record fell.

Mon - I guess my love for Auburn would never allow me to be in the coaching/video profession for anyone that played Auburn.

Y'all will have to excuse me for a few minutes. I've got to go clean the cookie dough off the beaters. YUMMY!!!

Blogger JD said...

I only ask about a Malzahn coaching tree because there is a strong possibility I think that guy will be a HC sooner than later given his complete approach to the game. It makes me very sad to say that since I am the driver of the Gus Bus.

Blogger j-z said...

I think we have to hope that Luper soaks up everything he can from Malzahn. I'm betting on him as the next OC, whether it's this year or next year.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think I overdid it. MrsTHT will surely notice the significant decrease in volume of chocolate chip cookie missing from the mixing bowl when she comes back to the kitchen. That stuff is soooooooooo good. I'll ask her to make a batch for this weekend.

8:25 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I appreciate the advice THT.

I'm wearing fresh Jama's, if anyone is wondering they have Tate and Mccalebb on them.

8:25 PM
Blogger JD said...

I've been thinking that seems like a logical choice. Since Luper has had coaching stints under Malzahn and Mike Gundy. I think those two are impressive offensive minds and Luper should have gained valuable experience and approaches from both coaches.

8:26 PM
Blogger JD said...

So McCalebb was a WVU commit before signing with AU. Can you imagine defending a backfield with Noel Devine and McCalebb...glad we got that guy!

8:28 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Wakerider wears McTate UnderRoo's!

I have reason to believe we don't have to worry about losing Malzahn for at least 3 years.

8:30 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Next on the agenda ... replacing McCalebb in the backfield after he turns pro in two years.

Whatever shall we do?

8:32 PM
Blogger JD said...

Mon...REASON?

let's just enjoy what we got now while we got it.

Jet, after that we have to relocate the stadium after we are unable to resist the state's exercise of right of eminent domain!

Lets live for "the now" and kicking the pooty poo out of everyone we face.

8:37 PM

We got the hottest date for homecoming dance and the Christmas ball, and everybody's freakin' out because the date might not be there for Prom.

Sheesh. C'mon. Grow a pair. Enjoy the ride.

8:38 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Anybody else surprised at the WVU line? (AU favored by 4.5 from what I saw earlier)

I figured AU would be at least a touchdown favorite.

8:39 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Are we that far down the road to be concerned about replacing Malzahn and McCallebb? Wow.

I'm just concerned about stopping Noel Devine at this point.

For me, it is too early for that kind of thinking. I will at least wait until Au is ranked in the top 30. I just cautious. But not everyone is.

8:41 PM
Blogger Craig Miller said...

Yeah now we just have to "seal the deal" with the prettiest girl at these dances and maybe it will rock her world and she'll wanna go to prom. But if she gets to clingy and needy we kick her to the curb.

8:42 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Sucker bet FSJ. I know I guy that will hold your money if you want to make that bet.

8:42 PM
Blogger JD said...

I agree just don't want to take Tony Franklin to the Prom...

8:43 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

stopping Devine indeed should be our first thought this week. That dude is RFAH.

WTC ...

My McCalebb reference was pure sarcasm. I think there's some serious oxygen deprivation going on in here tonight.

I'm with you ... the day is sufficient for its own problems ... we'll worry about next season ... I don't know ... maybe sometime after this one.

8:43 PM
Blogger Monica said...

It's up to 6 now Faker and I'm not surprised.

8:44 PM
Blogger JD said...

Who said anything about replacing McCalebb. I just said that a backfield with Noel Devine and McCalebb would be extremely dangerous. I am very thankful that he decomitted from WVU and signed with us.

8:44 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Ugly girls appreciate your adoration more, though.

Or so I've heard. I was always with the hottest honeys.

8:45 PM
Blogger JD said...

Devine just scored in last years game again so yeah you are right we need to stop him first and foremost this week.

8:46 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Especially the gun-totin' honeys, Jay G!

8:46 PM
Blogger Craig Miller said...

I bet Tony Franklin wreaked of Old Forrester at his high school prom. 5 o'clock shadow and looking disheviled. love that mental image.

8:46 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I think we have to worry about Jarret Brown first and Devine second.

8:47 PM
Blogger wtc said...

JD-Jet made a sarcastic remark of thinking who will replace himwhen he goes pro in 2 years. Just playing on the giddiness of those that are looking a replacement for Malzahn for when he leaves for HC job.

8:47 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

I'm wit jet on this un. We haven't begun to see the defenses we will see.. did that make sense? I don't think you will see the push from our O line against the big boys like you have seen thus far. Then, we shall see. Not that I'm not happy or impressed. Best thing is our coordinator knows how to call playes.

8:48 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

how come hot guys never marry the ugly girls, but hot girls will marry ugly guys?

Plenty of proof of the latter in HABOTN

8:48 PM

Monica incorrect things to worry about this week, 1. delicing hotel rooms in Auburn after the WVU mountainfans stay this weekend. 2. stopping brown 3. stopping devine.

Stats are good, but let's hope they hold up a month from now, then two months from now.

We can't just focus on Devine, Jock Sanders ripped us apart last year as well.

8:51 PM
Blogger JD said...

Well I said some of that WTC. But after some of the hires that were forced down our throats during the past 10 years I just hate to see someone I like who has had success go else where. I guess I just have to have faith in the hiring abilities of Chiz I mean look at what he brought us thus far! And really enjoy what we are doing now.

8:52 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Brown doesn't run?

8:52 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

FSJ - I didn't have any. Still don't.

8:53 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Maybe I was just looking for it, but did anyone else notice that Eric Smith is an agressive player who tends to push and shove long after a play is over?

8:53 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I thought the DL was/is a weak link. AU got little up field push from them and if Miss St. ran the ball earlier instead of passing, they could have worn the DL out. An earlier poster mentioned the worst thing happened when AC had the INT & score. The DL had to go back out with little rest. I can see a running team putting AU to the test. I think AU can score, but the D is going to be worn out later in the year. IMO.

8:53 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

so whats wrong w/ old forrester? Even dumb a's can have good wiskey.

8:53 PM
Blogger Monica said...

exactly, WERK and he's been ripping again this year

8:53 PM

You weren't the only one who noticed, WERK. Eric Smith is an overly aggressive boy.

WTC. Our D still has me pretty worried. Not as strong as in years past.

Well he came down to dinner in his Sunday best,
Excitable boy they all said.
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest,
Excitable boy they all said.

Well, he's just an excitable boy.

8:57 PM
Blogger JD said...

I agree on what you are noticing on Eric Smith. It bothers me that is an "Auburn Man"

Mon Sorry, I got confused I was thinking about Jock Sanders I couldn't remember his name I guess I thought that is who you were talking about when you said brown earlier.

8:58 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

wtc,

I disagree about the defensive front. Miss State ran the ball 75% or more of the game. The only yardaged they picked up is when they would run outside. Most of the time when they went up the gut we knocked them down.

8:59 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Mon-J Brown was only a 3 star recruit in 2005. Can't be any good. Just go to AL.com and read the comments sections. 3 stars are never any good. They can't beat 4-5 stars, ever. :)

8:59 PM

My issues with the D last night were some mental mistakes -- lack of concentration heavily contributed to 17 of their points.
