Thursday Night LIVE

Welcome. We're watching Georgia Tech @ Miami ... and listening to Tiger Talk on radio affiliates throughout Alabama.

CURRENT SCORE (game is on ESPN HD)

MIAMI - 33

GEORGIA TECH - 17

Final

TIGER TALK TIDBITS
  • Gene Chizik and Rod are eating steamed mussels and meat lover's pizza. Important stuff first.

  • On this week's work: "I thought the focus was really high and I thought our football team (thanks, RK) practiced well this week."

  • The MSU win: ``It was really good to see our football realy go up and go back down. You want to find out how they respond to negative circumstances."

  • On his weird punt formation: ``It gets speed guys, on the snap, down the field for coverage. It's a coverage advantage. We just have to block it better. We worked on it hard this week."

  • On the Meerkat Manor® business: ``It's strategically an advantage for our offense. We line up like we're going to run a play, then we see what the defense is running. Then we get ourselves into a better play."

  • On the team's defensive backs: ``We're going through some growing pains. They're coming along. When you have a mixture of so many young guys on the defense, the continuity struggles a little bit. You've got your Dee Fords playing, your Daren Bates playing. Demond Washington is a new guy. The more experience they get, the better they'll be."

  • On TBs and WRs: ``We're a work in progress. Right now, we're pleased with the direction we're headed. We've had some production there. We've got to have them do it 12 (games). Then after that -- the postseason as well."

  • On the crowd at J-H: ``I'm urging our fans ... it's going to take all 87,000 and it's going to take us playing a great game on top of that. I'm challenging all our people to bring it to a new level Saturday night."

  • On WVU: ``This is right up their alley -- a physical-type game. They've got confidence. They played Auburn last year."

  • On assistants' recruiting areas: ``We've got most of our coaches in the state of Alabama. We have two in Birmingham (Thigpen and Taylor), Coach Luper kind of has Mobile and he splits that area with Jeff Grimes. Boulware has Montgomery and close to Auburn. (Phillip Lolley handles north Alabama.) The amount of hours they spend are insignificant. They just want to win. That's what recruiting is about."

  • On Eltoro Freeman: ``Toro is, since we started practice, he's had a lot of ups and downs because of injury issues. It was great to see him wean himself into the game last week. We think little but little ... he can play more and more."

  • On the defense and Chizik's role with the defense: ``It's really just going what we do every day and doing it better. We're not re-inventing the wheel. What I've learned over the years with all the great defenses I've been with, continuity is the key. Coach Roof and I consult on a lot of things. I hire great coaches. He's great at his trade. I have great people and we'll get better. I don't have to micro-manage anything. I have the big-picture look."

  • On the freshman WRs: ``I'm really, really proud of those three guys. (Benton, Blake and Gulley) This is a work in progress with them. People think when receivers come in that their job is to catch the ball. That's it. That's not true. We run the ball, too. The wide receivers are responsible for blocking the (final) 95 yards. Those three are getting there. They're not there. You'll see them progress a little more week by week by week."

  • Now it's dessert time for Gene and Rod. Sounds like they're getting some "light" chocolate mousse. Important news.

  • On how Auburn fans are smart: ``I get a lot of great questions. I hear them a lot. The Auburn faithful -- they're very educated about football and they know the game."

  • On injuries: ``Day by day on a lot of guys. I just ... you never know who's listening. You never want someone to know if someone is going to be out. It's not fair to the young man or their families."

(NOTE: Chizik's position on Aairon Savage is that he's DAY-BY-DAY ... with a torn Achilles.)

  • On Tim Hawthorne: ``We want Tim back as soon as we can get Tim back. He's worked really hard. He's done all the things we've asked. He's dying inside to play. He has a lot of urgency to get back."

  • On the freshmen WRs AGAIN (please shoot me): ``Dontae is really going to be a very good football player. Our plan right now is to redshirt him. He's our "look team" (scout team) player of the week this week. He did a good job of playing Noel Devine. I told him at practice at how proud I was of him assuming a role ... that's a lot of dirty work. He plugged in there and did what we asked him to do."

  • Kathy, not OUR Kathy, loves the offensive line: ``They appreciate that. You wanna talk about a dirty job? I don't believe in bad luck, but they haven't give up a sack. (Applause) The cool thing is, from my chair, is to watch them come together and play with chemistry. Why is that? There's a lot of ingredients to make that cake. They've delivered. They wear people down. You can really see a difference in the third quarter."

  • Dan from Montgomery is a WVU grad, but he's an Auburn fan at heart. He wants Auburn fans to show class for WVU. Oh, wait. That wasn't a question. Dan doesn't want Noel Devine to beat that butt again: ``Great question. He's a great running back. He rushed for 200 yards last year, Rod, but that was last year. I feel really good in our plan. We've got a good grip on what we need to do to be successful."

  • Dave from Opelika wants to know if FAH is durable: ``He's a tough young'un. Time will tell. I think he's very durable. There's nobody on our team who is tougher. He's been through a lot. Those two (FAH and Ben Tate) are in the mix. They'll always be in the mix."

  • On recruits: "We have some great recruits coming this weekend. It's going to be very important for our crowd to bring their 'A' game - not just for this game, but for the future of Auburn. It's going to take everybody to win."

  • "War Eagle."

  • THAT'S A WRAP.

Did you happen to catch the highlights of the Auburn/Miss. State game on ESPN's SportsCenter or Gameday Final last Saturday night? Neither did I because there weren't any. This game had so many story lines it wasn't even funny, but apparently Auburn is just too bad to be mentioned during two hours of highlights that included the bi-coastal battle of Wake Forest vs. Stanford, Utah vs. San Jose State, and Fresno State vs. Wisconsin. I don't know about you, but I just couldn't wait to see what happened in each of these monumental clashes.

9:04 PM

I for one would like to see the U back to its best. Same goes for FSU. The ACC (and college football) is just so much more interesting if they are worth a darn.

9:16 PM
Blogger WDCWE said...

Same for Notre Dame and Nebraska. I just wish that non-traditional powerhouses actually had a shot at a NC. If Miami, FSU, Notre Dame, or Nebraska had a 12-0 season in 2004, they would have been in the NC game instead of OK.

9:21 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Agree WDCWE. I still can't stand Notre Dame, even when they are bad, but Nebraska is a great program. They love their college football in Lincoln. I'd love to go up there for a game some time.

But you are correct, though. College football is better off with a great FSU and Miami teams.

9:25 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Here's the story and pictures of the carnage.

9:26 PM
Blogger JD said...

I completely disagree with that statement WDCWE. USC and Oklahoma were #1 & #2 at the start of that season. USC had won a "share" of a NC in 2003 and Oklahoma lost to LSU in the NC game in 2003. They were the NC in 2000. No one was going to jump those two as long as they didn't lose and that is what happened.

9:30 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

of course, it doesn't surprise me at all that the most trash ever found on UGAs campus was after the bammers were in town.

Just kidding, FSJ. I seriously doubt the UA-T fans left a lot of trash behind. They have better manners. UGA fans have always been crude, vulgar, and trashy.

9:31 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

THT,
I am amazed that people who love their school would leave it looking like that. We really try to be make sure you can't tell we have tailgated on our spot.

Frame,
Fast as hell

9:31 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Frame - Sensi asked JGT "How does McCalebb fit in the offense" back in pre-season.

JayGT's reply, "He's fast as hell, that's how he fits in."

Hence the FAH moniker

9:32 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

And, Frame, I found about inside jokes. HABOTN really doesn't have them - all you have to do is ask and someone will explain it. It's just if you are on here alot the same things just kind of go around. But no one means to keep secrets. Well, there are some secrets we don't ask about - like Michael's goats.

I didn't think we ever passed OK. I thought we shared #2 with them. The only logic I can see in your arguement is that if ND went undefeated they would have beat USC and therefore they wouldn't have been #1 or #2.

I don't consider them inside jokes per se. Just history. We have history.

9:43 PM
Blogger WDCWE said...

I actually didn't think about that, JD. My main point is that Traditional powerhouses get preferential treatment in polls when put against even, or even slightly better competition. Oklahoma is no slouch at all, but wouldn't have gotten the spot if ND had ended the season with good wins over two rivals and then a conference(if they had one) championship.

How do you not consider Oklahoma a "Traditional Power" these guys are not exactly Utah or Boise State. They have spent more weeks ranked #1 in the AP poll than any other NCAA program. They hold the NCAA record for most consecutive wins 47. They have 5 heisman trophy winners. They have had 70 consensus All-Americans. They have 7 MNCs. And for that matter I would also consider Auburn a "Traditional Power"

9:50 PM

UGA's campus has been looking like that for years after games. The only reason it's a story is because the school is trying to cut cleanup costs and has a campaign out to try and raise awareness......

Watching north campus (by the arch) get cleaned up Sunday morning is pretty awesome. Those peeps are experts. It goes from a disaster area to not being able to tell anyone had been there in less than a couple of hours. I wish our pledges had been so good.

The real problem is lack of trash cans/dumpsters and the fact that the trash is gone before they wake up the next morning. Over the years, people have just gotten used to not having anywhere to put their trash and the help cleaning up behind them.

THT, there's not really parking near those tailgates, so lugging trash back across campus before the game would require shutting the tailgate down super early. As far as the option to come back after the game and lug out trash, I don't think you could get the hippies at Cal or Oregon State to do that. It's just a bad situation, really. The university is working hard to fix it....and, like I said, by 9:00am Sunday morning, you wouldn't know there had been a football game, so it's not as bad as it seems.

Thanks for asking IV.

We went back to Children's Hospital today for some blood work and to get her flu shot.

And we went through classes on how to take care of her and learned alot about the nutritional needs of CF kids and the therapies we have to administer daily.

To be honest, it is a lot of information, but I came away more convinced than ever that they are making great strides in attacking this disease.

Abbie is doing fine though. She didn't like to have the blood work done but she is a normal three year old little girl...

10:25 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I agree that it's a problem, but I also can understand why it is the way it is....and, probably not to the extent of north campus at UGA, but there's not a campus in America that has 80k+ around on a Saturday that doesn't undertake some sort of large scale cleanup on Sunday. It's a price we pay. Despite the efforts of many good folks like cincy, Auburn doesn't sparkle Sunday morning.

Just like I bet IV's campsites are spotless when his troop leaves, but I've seen quite a few firepits left in the woods.

I think of Abbie often and I wished that I could take her place when they have to stick her. I have been stuck so many times that it is second nature to me. In fact I have to stick myself twice a day to check my blood glucose level.

IV, I don't know. I think I have an understanding of the what causes the situation, not because of my relationships with so many UGA alums, but because of the amount of time I've spent in Athens (not that those are mutually exclusive). There's a couple of areas that the tailgating provides challenges. That's all I'm really saying. I'm with THT, it's disgusting and something needs to be done (the whole reason for the story is that something is being done- awareness is step number 1). That doesn't make the situation unique to UGA, though, nor does it make the offenders bad people.

FSJ, it is nice to see you are taking care of what needs to be done. When a challenge arises, it is easy to get caught up in the bad, but choosing to look at the good is much more productive. Many focus on what they can't do, while others focus on what they can. Keep a positive attitude and everyone will be better because of it.

Snacks,

I disagree with your statement that the ones who trash are not bad peeps. There are other alternatives to letting our governments take care of what we should and could take care of ourselves. If the tailgaters hauled it in, just like Scouts, they can haul it out. A garbage bag or two in every vehicle can do wonders if the occupants will just use them.

I don't know if Athens has a litter law or not. No community should have to have one because everyone should be responsible for their own actions. But if Athens does have a litter law, then in my opinion, those that break that law are bad people.

IV, I agree. Yes, lazy people increase the cost of everything for us. It isn't that big of a deal to pick up after yourself, but not everyone has grown up yet.

SteveFC,

Not only was I taught, with certain consequences when I didn't comply, to always pick up after myself, I passed that along to my two sons. I have to admit that one does a better job than the other one; however, they were both taught that lesson.

Another thing that I was taught was to always put things back where they belong when I finished using something. I darn sure had better comply with that one if I used any of my Dad's tools. I also tried to pass this on to my two sons.

TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so glad I picked GT to win the ACC. That pick looks steller now. I now have to go adjust my predicted Georgia record from 5-7 to 6-6.

I picked Va. Tech to win the ACC originially, but I am starting to think Miami may have a serious chance.

Their offense is most impressive.

It's still strange to me for guys like Miami and Nebraska to not be national powers.

Did I mention how bad the local miami announcers are? I woke up pissed off this morning, and I'm sure it was because I had to listen to them last night.

Apparently, Charles Hollis from the BHam News also believes WVU will win for the same reasons I've said/posted.

Just a thought from Atlanta. I know I shouldn't listen to sports talk in the morning, but I'm tired of hearing these nonathletic sports talk radio guys* say that we have played Miss State and "The sisters of the poor" in regards to La Tech (which we all know went to a bowl game and won last year). I dare say that those two teams are great strides above the opening flurry the Gators have had, but no they are the great ones. These same guys still bring up Chiz's 5-19 Iowa State record. When are they going to learn that a change of philosophy can actually improve a team to greatness. Just like the Atlanta Falcons that they said might win 2 games last year that ended up with 11 wins and in the playoffs. Thanks for letting me vent

Kristina,
No, we decided to stay at the condo tomorrow until game time. My daughter and her husband have to go to a wedding in Memphis so no one was available to save our site. We had decided this last week, but It is looking like a good decision with the rain chance predicted and me having had the crud for the last week. I just don't have the energy to do the big deal. We will enjoy hanging around the condo and catching some games on TV. Plus, food is a little easier. Long answer to a short question :)

Morning PF and all the Hotties,

PF- you should blame the lousy Miami radio announcers on UA-T; there's bound to be a connection somewhere. Then you can channel your hate towards those most deserving ;-)

If there is no threat of the pass, Ga Tech's offense is going to have a difficult time running that offense against decent teams (please see Auburn 2008)
