I haven't been able to get the video to play yet either.

Phillip Marshall is saying the Roof played scout team players against Ball State. Apparently they weren't even aware of the game plan.

Also, I find the redshirts that were pulled interesting. One OL and one DL. It makes me wonder if the OL was because Isom won't be back any time soon.

The Eric Mack news is encouraging. As for Victor Beasley, I like the linebacker commits we already have and don't expect us to sign more than a couple more. He would be good, but less critical than Mack.

Yes, definitely something weird going on here - front page says this post has 14 comments, but as I am writing this the comment page says only 7.

Just in case this is actually visible, did it appear to anyone besides me that Roof was anxious to get back to work? If so, good idea.

I think Jay cleaned up some of the mess on the page. Something weird was going on and there were numerous deleted posts.

Thanks for the confirmation on FAH, Jay. I think he will be used a good bit against UT.

I think the defense is fine as long as we score more points than the other team. That's how you win last time I checked.

Wow, I figured I was the only HOTTIE out there still awake.

Saw on the other thread where someone posted our ranking in total defense after four games was #41 nationally.

Did anyone take note of the fact that there are 120 teams in the FBS this season? That means we are just a yard or two per game out of the upper third. And we're currently about 10 yards per game worse than we finished in '08.

Also mentioned that we were only #8 in the SEC in total "D". Seeing as how we have games later this season against #9 (LSU), #10 (Kentucky), #11 (UGa) and #12 (Arky), I'm somewhat encouraged.

Blogger Aeronaut said...

Wow. yeah it is weird to see the teams below us.

In addition to the special teams / referee's mistake, and playing the rookies, I also think that the TOP played a role in Ball State's high score. They were on the field for more than 35 minutes.

As long as the team shows progress, and does not show signs of falling apart, I'll be a happy camper.

There's a difference between "We've got to go back to work today and continue to improve in a lot of areas." and "we will have to get back to drawing boards and simplify things".

Good morning Hotties! It's time to focus on the AU/TN game. This will be a real challenge for our Tigers and we need to be sending lots of good vibes. How many are making the trip up? Wish I could, but my sister and her friend are going. They will definitely be loud.

Kathy- I will be going as i'm fairly sure that Kristina, Scottie B and probably RK as well.

This is truly the first real big game week of the season. I'm excited and curious about our test in Knoxville. If we score 30 points then we should win for sure, i'm just not convinced we will be able to hang 30 up on UT. There defense is good, real good, especially their secondary.

Thoughts on TN. I don't think their D can practice at the rate our offense REALLY runs plays and not be totally beat at the end of the week. I also don't think they can get a practice team to run at the speed our offense runs. We get to look at their offense and defense running against UCLA and Florida. They get to use our film from WVU. I think we will have a better sample of what they do, which will hopefully prepare us better for the game.

7:03 AM
Blogger Jet said...

It's time for all of us to take a deep breath. We were confident that we would be 3-1 or 4-0 at this point. We can find our way to 8-9 wins, but we can also find our way to 5 losses, too.

If any of you are worried about polls due to BCS concerns. The only BCS we should be worrying about now are Boulware-Coached Special teams.

7:09 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

For those questioning if UT's D is good, right now on paper they are pretty good.

Tennessee ranks eighth nationally in total defense, allowing just 233.0 yards per game ... The Vols are 11th nationally in pass defense (146.0 yards per game) and 15th in rushing defense (87.0)

I think it will be interesting to see how the team responds to their first away game. Especially if they start slow, like they have in the first 4.

7:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Tigers have also scored 40+ points in three straight games, marking the first time the Tigers have ever scored 40 or more points in three consecutive contests.

7:13 AM
Blogger coosa said...

Good morning to the Hotties; I don't think that TN is anywhere close to being as good as WV. That's no guarantee that we will win, but we should. This team seems to me to have the most important characteristic needed to win - confidence. Todd seems to be having fun, and I don't think he's going to panic when things don't go our way.

I think it will be close for a half, then AU rolls in the second half. And then we will have beaten a team that is rated around #50 in the country and everyone will say, "so what?"

7:26 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

On the contrary it's the 1st time we've given up 20+ points in 3 straight games since the Ole Miss, Georgia & Alabama games in 2003.

...and the 1st time we've given up 30 points in consecutive games since Arkansas & Florida in 2002.

This week is a time to inject a little reality into Auburn's situation. We are ahead of where most thought would be, but we are still a long ways away from being a solid football team. UT is going to be a brutal game for us and them. UT needs this game way more than we do, so we better come out fighting from the opening kickoff instead of having to respond like we have had to do the last 4 games. Momentum is much easier to sway at home than on the road and UT will have plenty of people there to make it difficult on us. Like Jet said, it's too darn early to be worrying about rankings because this team is not a BCS team and hopefully every reasonable Auburn fan can recognize that.

You gotta believe, Eddie. When has Auburn ever lead the nation in offense? Things ain't like they used to be; won't be anymore 7-0 games.

I'm just hoping that Sensi will pick TN so that I'll be a little more certain of our win. ;)

8:34 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Coosa- I believe, but I refuse to believe blindly, that is all i'm saying.

I'm with RK on the defense. It does suck big time to give up 30 points, but I walked away from the game way more concerned about the special teams. I would also like to add that UT is everybit as sucky as we are there too. That should be interesting to watch.

8:37 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It was last year Coosa, we led the nation in being offensive.

8:37 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I said it yesterday. I just feel like we are an average defense. Not great, not poor as some on here are saying.

We are average on D, we just happen to be on the field a lot more than normal because our offense gets on and off the field so quickly.

8:39 AM
Blogger ADP said...

Eddie - If we get the breaks and beat every team we play, and everyone we play with the exception of Bama looks very beatable, would that make us a BCS team? Or would they keep us out because all responsible fans and bloggers realize that we are actually not a BCS team?

8:41 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Phred- Do you honestly believe this team could go undefeated? If you think that, then I can see where ranking may matter, but I in no way believe we have a shot at going undefeated.

Last season we were ranked when we didn't deserved to be. This season is probably the opposite.

8:45 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Weird to think Auburn's defense is the more suspect side of the ball, huh?

Bigger surprise: Auburn special teams are terrible. Never saw that coming.

8:52 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If we win in Knoxville, the ranking will take care of itself. Even if UT isn't as good as people expected, winning up there still gets you respect.

What does suck is if we were many other schools who had a down year the year before but started 4-0, we'd probably be in the top 15.

Love the video. Would you say Roof is a man of few words but ready to get to work?
This is the week to come of age for these young men. Don't know the answer to Special teams. You would think that they could find someone to catch a punt. Even worse is the kickoff cover.

9:02 AM
Blogger coosa said...

You guys are exactly right, and if ND had played the games we played and performed exactly like us they'd be the talk of espn every waking moment. If So Cal would have had our team and performance in 2004, they would have been anointed as the great college football team of all time.

The lack of respect Auburn gets in the media when compared to other teams is a fact. I used the word conspiracy yesterday as a joke; looked like some took me seriously.

9:03 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Auburn can be beaten and will be IMO. If I put on my orange & blue shades this would be best case the way I see it:

Tennessee- Should Win
Arkansas- Should Win
Kentucky- Should Win
LSU- Maybe at Best
Ole Miss- Maybe / Should Win
Furman- Gimme for Sure
Georgia- Maybe at Best
Alabama- Not on paper, but home crowd could be X factor, but still probably a loss.

9:04 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Phred,

It could happen as all of those teams are beatable...however it would be a huge surprise to win them all.

Right now I'm just afraid a special teams disaster might cost us a game.

9:05 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Seriously if the D is constantly starting the game on the 35-40 yard line, it's going to cost us against the good teams.

9:06 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

In all of the close games and there are many, poor special team performance will get you beat 9 out of 10 games.

9:07 AM
Blogger coosa said...

Eddie, I don't think its likely AU goes undefeated, but I do think a 10-2 record is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Football is a game that is about emotion and confidence more than anything else. It sure helps to be good, but if you can't be good, you at least gotta believe that you are good. A team that believes that it is good is capable of amazing things - see 1972.

I thought we had to win the first 4 games to develop enough confidence to have a good season. They did, and everything is still right there in front of them.

9:09 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Keep in mind that UT is in a can't lose situation this weekend or their season is over. We will get their best shot this weekend.

9:12 AM
Blogger coosa said...

My gosh, Eddie, you just posted an 11-1 scenario. Keep the orange and blue shades on. ;)

And be sure of this - if we somehow won all of those games and went to the bammer game 11-0, we would have a very real chance to win. The home field is usually worth 7 pts; its usually worth 14 against bammer. It would be worth 21 in that scenario.

Even I think this is going too far, and I've been drinking the kool-aid a lot.

9:14 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Coosa- I don't disagree with you at all on the confidence factor and what that does for winning and team chemistry. I think this teams has the makings of something special, but just remember we are always 1 injury away from being a completely different team and gasp at this thought now... if Chris Todd was to go down, the season would go with it.

9:16 AM

Michigan is 4-0 with wins over a nearly equal array of teams ... and they're No. 20.

Not No. 5.

9:19 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I think Auburn's defense is going to misfire occasionally, which will put pressure on an offense that I'm not sure can rack up 550 yards on Tennessee, LSU or Alabama.

Florida will be a tough team in the SEC championship game. You all should add them to your schedules.

9:22 AM

For the record, I don't think we should be ranked and if so probably at 25 or so.

However if a USC, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Notre Dame or others had a 5-7 year the year before then jumped off to a 4-0 start they would be ranked and probably in the top 15.

Michigan used to be among that group, but they have had several up an down years recently.

The D has to get off the field on 3rd down, which has been a struggle.

It also needs to cut down on stupid penalties.

An improvment in special teams will help the D out greatly.

9:24 AM

I still maintain that Notre Dame would be top 5. Notre Dame is way above Michigan in misconception of how good people think they are.

What's interesting to think about, is that if we (and yes this is all make believe) had started in the top 25 we would be near if not in the top 20 with nothing being different. However since we were an unknown commodity we've gotten placed where we have been placed. We're also going to have to play to teams with 2 losses (at least) in the next two weeks which supposedly won't help our strength of schedule. Making us the best 6-0 team not to be ranked.

9:38 AM

Jay G. - I thought special teams would be at least serviceable this season, but it has been horrid so far. Didn't see that coming either.

As for defense, I am impressed with how the D-Line has played so far. Team tackling seems, well, off if you ask me.

Is that a product of more possessions for the other team because Auburn is scoring more or lack of depth, talent, coaching, etc.?

The UT defense is much better than most folks anticipated during he pre-season. They are well-balanced and should be able to stop our offense regularly.

Conversely, their offense is offensive and we shoudl be able to stop them.

This leaves us with special teams and turnovers as the deciding factors. If we stop their run enough to make them pass, we should get a few ints. The same can be said for the UT defense. Forcing throws at Eric Berry is a sure way to lose.

We need a special teams renaissance.

I think most people thought UT's D was going to be great this year. They were in the top 5 in the nation last year on a 5-7 team and they really didn't lose anyone other than Chavis being replaced by Monte Kiffin.

This game has scared me since the start of the season, it's our first road game vs a team that can stop most offenses.

FYI, Tennessee installed a wildcat package for the Ohio game. freshman Nukeese Richardson ran it. i think around 6-8 snaps. it scored UT's first TD of the game when he handed it off to Hardesty for an 11-yard TD run. i believe it was the first time they ran that package this season.

10:43 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am glad UT is a favorite. That would make a win even more impressive.

For those dreaming of undefeated seasons, keep in mind that the complexion of the game will change once we run across a team that can hog the ball with long sustained drives. So far nobody has really done that. Even WV tended to have quick scoring drives.

If a team is able to control the ball so that their defense is not worn down in the second half, then things will look completely different. It could be this week, which is my concern with the Vols. I think we win because Crompton is not capable of executing consistently, but if he does, watch out.

Eddie is right to temper optimism. If we win 9 games I will feel really good. Some of the teams that you may consider now as beatable will be better by when we play them. Hopefully, we will too. I just think that LSU's offense will eventually click. I also think Georgia is improving, although I am not sure how good their defense will get.

i had thought that maybe Crompton had struggled b/c he lost his top 2 receivers pre-season and has been relying on freshman to throw to. i knew they've called out Gerald Jones for running the wrong way a few times.

one of my co-workers who goes to every game set me straight this morning. he says either Crompton either hits 'em between the numbers with a bullet or throws it behind him with a bullet. 50/50. he threw one behind a WR and it got tipped and picked off vs. Ohio and he also fumbled trying to make a play on 3rd down. it would've been ran back for a TD if the Ohio player had not stepped out of bounds after recovering.

However, lsu # 6? Really? you think there are only 5 other teams in the country that are better than lsu? if this was discussed in a previous thread please let me know. but i was just kind of surprised.

Before the season began, and I was justifiably skeptical of the Malzahn offense, I was hoping for 3-1 at this point, and fully expecting 1-4 in October. And that's only if we survived against UK at home after back-to-back road losses.

Now I approach the rest of the season with a good bit more confidence. We should win at least 2 this month, which makes us bowl eligible before Homecoming. I thought 7 wins this year would be the best we could possibly expect, and now it appears perfectly reasonable.

As for the special teams issues, it all comes back to depth. In the past we could count on a ton of seasoned veterans, and some starters, to contribute on ST. Now, not so much.

There are 6 guys listed with tackles in the official stats who have blank bios on auburntigers.com. And two more who don't have bios at all. That should tell us something about our ST issues.

i was wrong on UT's wildcat package. it was only used twice. one on a handoff for their 11-yd TD run. the 2nd time Richardson kept it and got 5 yards.

Well we did also play a lot of people on defense on Saturday which is why you have people without profiles in the stat book.

Did Downs get an official tackle for his 10 seconds after the play late hit?

IF UT installed the Wildcast last week because the fans wanted it, that seems problemsome.

I do remember the G-Gun last year, they ran it against us also if I recall. But nothing beats the wild-Eagle formation that we ran on one drive for a touchdown to never see again :).

Will our defensive prep for the UT game be any more arduous than what we had to do for the WVU game? I want to say that there was talk of more multiple threats and a quarterback that could play on their team.

i think he finally realized Crompton doesn't have it. gotta try something else. how back does Nick Stephens (back up QB) feel?

if our D can rattle Crompton early and we get up, then he's done and the stadium will become extremely quiet. that's what i'm hoping anyways.

My long post game notes:

- I don't understand the slow starts on offense. I know the old football adage is to establish the run... but screw that. The last two teams have sold out against the run, and it's like it took us a quarter to figure that out and let Todd do some damage. If Tennessee is not playing them straight up, then air it out from the get go.
- Todd really has to work on his touchdown celebrations. They are embarrassing. He needs to find a friend who will always
- You know who Eltoro Freeman reminded me of a few times against Ball St? Pybus from last year. Running as hard as he could in the wrong direction. Once he gets it, he will be dangerous. I think it really hurt him to miss so much fall practice.
- Todd threw some of his best lasers of the season against Ball St. Worries of a weakening arm as the season goes seem unfounded.
- In my opinion, Fannin should be our short yardage back. Tate hit the hole way too slow in that situation. I am still all for Tate getting a majority of the carries... but he hasn't been finishing runs like he did the first couple of weeks, either.
- You know, Chizik was there in 2002 when Tubs called a fake punt run on a 4th and 20 from our own 15. Do you think that was Chiz's idea also? Probably not. Tubs was still the Riverboat Gambler in those days. Either way, we can at least be happy that the fake punt call on Saturday was only the second worst one at Auburn in the last 10 years.
- Injuries and suspensions suck.

Thank you RK and Eddie

MY boy Doug AP voter of the Cleveland Ohio paper strikes again, If you missed his votes it is on a previous thread.

There is absolutely no logical way that Penn State can be ahead of Iowa at this point in the season based on the evidence we have in front of us. Plain Dealer writer Doug Lesmerises, who has taken the revolutionary stance of basing his AP vote on the actual results on the field, blogged about the subject yesterday:

In front of 109,000 Penn State fans, on a regulation football field, with impartial officials paid to interpret and enforce the rules of the game, Iowa defeated Penn State on Saturday night, 21-10.

This game was on television. Many respected Web sites and newspapers carried the result.

...

But, if you haven't heard, Iowa won. Iowa is 4-0. Iowa has another win over Arizona, a 3-1 Pac-10 team. Iowa also defeated Iowa State, a 3-1 Big 12 team.

Penn State is 3-1. Penn State's other wins, all at home, came against 1-3 Akron, a MAC team; 2-2 Syracuse of the Big East; and 1-2 Temple, another MAC team.
I like this man for being different. Thanks Evan this came from his blog.

11:40 AM

Scottie, in watching the UT/ Ohio game, Crompton made some nice throws that hit the numbers and were dropped. I think UT has two issues in their passing attack and that is crompton and actually catching the ball.

Watson Downs was credited with an assist against MSU, as did Gabe Barrett. Woody Parramore and Chris Humphries both had solo tackles against LA Tech, and Humphries had a solo and an assist against MSU to lead the no-name brigade. The much-heralded Wade Christopher had an assist against LT and one against BSU, Jason King picked up an assist against WVU, and Ikeem Means had two assists this past Saturday.

The only one of the above names I'd heard of before the season began was Christopher.

If it takes putting regulars on kickoff coverage to keep teams from starting at the 35-40 yard line every time they get the ball, then let's let them play on ST.

2.9 yards per punt return and 4 fumbles should be fixed by getting the right guy out there.

Stupid fake punts up 30-7 should never be called, much less called again.

11:52 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

On the topic of fake punts.

Damon Duval in Knoxville's fake punt attempt down 7-0 in 1999 was among the worst throws I've ever seen. He threw it higher than one of his punts and allowed Deon Grant to run from one side of the field to the other and knock it away from a wide open T-Rob.

11:53 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- No, it wasn't that game. That was the game Caddy broke his leg and Duval missed the chipshot XP distance FG at the end for the win. I was at that game. It wa 2000 that he did the boneheaded fake punt.

11:54 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Also, on our fake punt against Ball State, did we not tip it off by not running the same punt formation we've been running all year long?

I could be wrong, but it looked like a more standard formation than the three blockers in front of the punter formation we've been using.

11:55 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- That fake punt against UT in 99 was so wide open and I have no idea why Duval put so much freakin air under it. He never did that in practice and it was supposed to be a quicker pass to begin with. Tubs was going off when he did that. I think he ended up sending him back to the locker room shortly after that.

11:55 AM
Blogger michael said...

This it what happens when you jump between points and are doing work at the same time you are writing a post

"- Todd really has to work on his touchdown celebrations. They are embarrassing. He needs to find a friend who will always do the same routine with him or something. Maybe a lineman since they are close by. He needs to stop running down bouncing around all giddy clearly looking for someone who may or may not show up to share his giddiness."

And the fake punt was definitely 2002 at Florida.

11:55 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I remember it being in the swamp.

If it was 2000 it was the game where Florida scored a TD on the first 5 drives of the game with Grossman as a freshman.

11:56 AM
Blogger michael said...

If I see Ontario McIrishman in a punt formation, the only possible explanation is that it is a fake.

11:56 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Rk- You are once again correct, that was a different formation than the normal punt formation and I thought surely they are not running a punt. I think they lineup in that formation previously and then split out wider, but I could be wrong.

11:57 AM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Just checked the 2002 archives, the infamous fake punt was at the Swamp that year.

We went for it on 4th and 3 on our own 8. What I had totally forgotten is that Chizik's defense completely stuffed the Gators (with help from Grossman on a delay of game AND an intentional grounding), to where they ended up settling for a FG after ending up 4th and Goal on the AU 31 (official drive was 4 plays, MINUS 23 yards).

11:57 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Looking at the stats for the 2002 Florida game, Duval does have 1 carry for 0 yards.

11:58 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Michael- Y0u are right, but ironically, the same thing happened in 2000. He stupidly went for 2 fake punts against UF in his career deep in his territory and both failed.

12:01 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

To this day that still amazes me. 4th and 3 from the 8 yard line with a fake punt in a game that at the time was 14-7!!

12:01 PM

I completely forgot about the 2002 fake punt and I was there. I guess the 2000 punt still lived in my mind.

Eddie, wasn't our fake punt in the 2000 game on our first drive?

12:04 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

You're right Eddie, I recall missing the beginning of that game, we faked a punt on our first posession, with a 4th and 3 on our own 21. Duval misfired on a pass to Deandre Green. Florida scored four plays later, and the rout was on.

Great way to take the crowd out of it, huh?

On Crompton, if you watch him in the Ohio game you will get a good idea what to expect. You will see a guy with a good arm that seems pretty accurate. You start wondering why he is getting criticized. Then suddenly he throws a bad pass, runs the wrong way on a play action pass, and fumbles while scrambling for way to long after giving up a ton of yards. He is a good example of a QB that will cost his team a game by being good 80% of the time, then suddenly blowing up.

Save the goofy fake punt for a situation where it would be needed...and use it at a time when your punting team is executing well.

Don't pull it out up 30-7 in the first half when you can't even execute basic punt plays properly.

I didn't mind the fake because I think they did it for Tennessee's benefit.

Did anyone notice the Ball St coach say "f'n a-hole" after Fannin did a slide after his long touchdown? And how funny was that celebration after all the talk this season about handing the ball to the ref and celebrating as a team in a classy manner?

12:55 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Are team celebrations classified as a part of special teams? With the Fannin slide, and the Toddzilla ineptitude, they certainly need coaching up.

And if they are a part of special teams, it's just more ammunition for the Boulware hatas over here.
