Officials are making the rule too difficult.

If it's not prolonged, overtly unsportsmanlike or choreographed, it shouldn't be a penalty. The Georgia celebration was none of the three. Neither was Charles Scott's celebration, for that matter.

Officiating post-TD celebrations should be akin to being a cop on Bourbon Street -- use good judgment.

Eh, I think UGA should be hit with a penalty each and everytime they score. They lost me when they did the Soldier Boy in 2007 after they stomped us. I was already tedering after they got that penalty against UF in 07 when Richt told them if they didn't get one he would be mad at them.

3:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, whether it is a stupid penalty or not doesn't matter. The UGA player should have stayed focused on the task at hand. I don't like the celebration penalties, but they are a reality due to some idiotic behavior back in the 90s. I am all for taunting penalties. As for the celebration penalties, perhaps they should give them 5 seconds to do whatever they want. If you have a choreographed dance routine you can complete in 5 seconds, fine. Take an extra second and it will cost you 15 yards.

BREAKING NEWS FROM ROCKY TOP:

A punishment may be coming for Tennessee receiver Brandon Warren, but definitive word on its length or severity has not come out of the UT camp yet.

A published report by WVLT in the afternoon said the Vols would suspend the junior for the season after a sideline outburst during Saturday's loss to Auburn, though he could be eligible for a return for bowl season according to a family member.

UT spokesperson Tiffany Carpenter declined to comment specifically on the possible decision.

I think the UGA players are an unruly and undisiplined lot. That stems directly from the HC. HCMR is fine man; off the field. Ok, I've said before that I'm a fan of AJ Green and have been a UGA sympathizer in the past. There was nothing that I saw that could have even given the official a chance to make a judgement call.

...and while that caller's conspiracy theories were a little out there, I do agree about Tebow. He's one of the worst offenders in the league about calling attention to himself. He runs around, waving his arms, pumping his fists, pointing to the crown, pointing to the spirit in the sky, and whatever else he can dream up. He's never been flagged for excessive celebration.

Jay G., A&M's end of the first half drive stats are misleading. The last drive ended at the 8, but that play started around the 30 or so and there was one second left on the clock when the play was snapped. The only reason there was one second left was because the refs reviewed the previous play and determined there was time left on the clock, otherwise the half was suppose to be over.

The only weird decision was that they didn't trot out the field goal team, but maybe their kicker doesn't have a strong leg. Plus, they didn't have any time outs. That whole last drive came with not much time on the clock and the Hogs playing a big of prevent.

Both the AJ Green and LSU fouls were called wrong.

That being said, I personally like for a team to act like they have been there before....even if they haven't. Jumping around and acting-a-fool just b/c you make a big play smacks of a wannabe instead of someone who IS. It's kinda sad when reactions to a good play are akin to that of a championship locker room.

If I'm the opposing team, I would be much more worried about a team that makes a play and is focused enuff to move on to the next task at hand instead of group hugs and chest bumps. Some players like this kind of stuff and some just tolerate it.

4:51 PM

Now imagine being the guy with the ball who actually worked for the score.

Let the kids play! (within reason, of course)

Congratulate each other however you want to.....over on the sideline. So Trooper chest bumps are great.

Watching 5-6 players pour into the endzone and maul the scorer after a score or a LB prancing and strutting after a sack is boring .....act like you've been there before and get back in the huddle!!! Celebrate when you actually win the game.

Is these type celebrations are necessary to excite the kids, then I guess that shows you what happens when you raise a self-affirmed generation that got trophies just for showing up.

I'm all for celebrations for TD's, turnovers or big stops on 3rd downs.

It's the celebration after stopping someone for a 1 yard gain on 1st down or celebrating a 12 yard catch on 1st down that is a bit too much.

I remember Plaxico Burress celebrating his 1st career catch for 13 yards and spinning the football on the ground not knowing in the NFL you have to be touched down and the other team jumped on the ball and recovered the "fumble".

The one player on our team who even Chiz has called out for celebrating is Bates. Bates likes to turn to the crowd and celebrate without is teammates every time he makes a play.

I was more worried about UT than Ark. Our D is better than their D and will stop them more than they will stop us....We win....40 something to 30 something.

I haven't posted since hoops season but wanted to get back in the groove today. A change in work/school venue changed my internet habits and I accept my removal from notable newcomers!!

I saw 2 nights ago that my recognizing J-Z sitting 2 seats down from me in KneeinmybackLand stadium was "freaky" to some...but I have been all about the HABOTN since the beginning and I recognized him from the pic at the MSU game...NO worries there..I'm not a sketchball!! J-Z was hella cool, and I must also send out props to his lady for helping my significant other solve all the worlds problems during the game while I stressed about all the ways that we could blow that big lead!

A happy Monday to you all and it's good to be back...

Put me among the terrible generation. I pumped my fist when I hit a home run. I pounded my chest after I blocked someone's shot or dunked on someone. I jumped up and down with my friends in the endzone who had just scored.

Heck, I scream at my computer screen when I find a material mistatement.

Without that emotion, I have zero motivation to do those things. If it doesn't feel good, I'm moving on to something else.

Good point RK. Somebody made this point earlier as well. Nothing worse than when a safety celebrates a big hit even though he just gave up a 12 yard completion. But yeah man, great hit, even if the play did result in a first down. What?

As for hearty celebrations, I have no problem with them. When I score a 20 pass combo goal in FIFA or get a nice kill in Halo, I get excited. It happens.

"Act like you've been there before" is a cliche. Why act like you've been there before? What is the logic? Sportsmanship? I guarantee you unless there is direct taunting, it does not make the other team feel any worse. And even if it did, the players on the other team would love the freedom to celebrate themselves when they do something big. So why act like you've been there before? Because you want to look cool? Is there vanity involved by wanting to look so cool that you don't even cared you just made a big play? Why?

I'm only slightly worried about Arkansas. I think Auburn's defense is better than Georgia's, who held on just enough to win against them, and Auburn's offense should be able to way outscore that attrocious D that Arkansas fields. As long as Auburn doesn't turn the ball over, it's a win.

Michael

It's that kind of attitude that tries to convince me James Cameron's Aliens is better than Ridley Scott's Alien.

Aliens was an exciting, fun movie, but there's no accounting for taste (as SMG so eloquently states a few minutes into this clip.

show me a team with no emotion and I'll show a team likely to get it's butt kicked in the big game. This whole march off the field like a robot thing is complete nonsense.

Player: I'm fired up on the inside coach.

PF...we'll just have to agree that it is a generational difference between us.

I hit a homerun because my teammate on first base taunted the pitcher into thinking he was gonna steal. The pitcher predictably threw a high fastball that I jacked out. It would have been an insult to my teammate to pump my chest and take the glory...but
I'm sure that's just old school to you.

5:38 PM
Blogger michael said...

Alien > Aliens... though both a lot of fun in their own way.

The difference between 80's action movies and players celebrating when they are happy? You guessed it... substance.

I would say a player pretending not to be excited actually has less substance.

5:45 PM

Sure..we celebrated after a TD...while running off of the field....but we got off of the field.

We didn't run down to the endzone and group hug just because of a TD.

Is it fragile emotion in today's kids that causes the need for praise and adoration over minor accomplishments in order to get them excited?

You did your job..here's your trophy!!!!

5:45 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Sensi, I give you Tim Tebow. What about him? You can't tell me he's not overwrought with emotion, but the guy has two nationional championships, two SEC titles, a Heisman trophy, a 26-5 record as a starter and he may add to all of that this year.

5:46 PM
Blogger ADP said...

The thing is, everybody in Hoopie's generation celebrated too, except Hoopie apparently.

5:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Single player.

Not the whole team.

Is he a fiery guy? Sure. I'll also posit that Tebow is an anomaly. Most guys his age aren't mature enough to handle. He clear is an exception to many rules.

5:48 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Taunting works. I had 19 strikeouts in a game a couple times because I put the first pitch of the game in the leadoff batter's earhole. It works.
That and a nasty curveball.

5:49 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm all for stoicism myself, but as long as the guys aren't taunting (which I thought Walt McFadden was close to doing a few times on Saturday and I didn't like it), it doesn't bother me a whole lot.

5:49 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Tim Tebow basically is the team, though. It's his fire that makes them go anyway.

5:50 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I mean...think about it.....Why are you celebrating a TD or a Homerun if you don't end up winning the game? The reason to play is to win the game...so you are celebrating your own accomplishment without knowing how the team will fare?

Kind of a shallow self-absorbed celebration in retrospect...huh?

5:51 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

So how do you think Florida will react if Tebow doesn't play this weekend?

5:51 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'll take Jason Campbell's composure any day, but I know Auburn fans wanted to see a lot more fire out of him before 2004. But that didn't make him tick and I loved that about him. People are different.

Blogger michael said...

Hoopie - I understand your opinion, but connecting with "those darn kids these days and their encouraging to a fault parents" is just silly. Here's guessing that a lot of the best college football players today, many of whom were raised in ghettos, did not receive excess encouragement as they grew up as you seem to suggest. I think that problem is more of an upperclass white issue... whose demographic, in turn, is probably most likely to act stoic after a touchdown (but that's because they know they would look like Chris Todd if they celebrated).

Y'all, these are little boys playing a game and having fun. What's wrong with a little celebrating if you aren't taunting the other team or doing some choreographed dance. Jumping around, pumping your fist, pointing to the sky, those all seem like normal reactions to doing something good.

Michael....In our town the classrooms give every student a ribbon for something...regularly. No one gets left out. Federal funding for the Atl inner city schools ensures that the same happens there also. It may occur slightly more in one demographic group over another, but socialogists ensure that it does happen.

6:02 PM

DM...I'm a lefty....a hard slider into the ribs or upper thigh affects an opposing pitcher more than making him duck, get up and dust off.

I never initiated....just retaliated.

Hoopie, I grew up in the 70's and played just about every sport available to me. Even back then we sometimes got trophies even when we didn't really deserve them. I assure you that I knew the difference, as did my teammates. Same thing with my kids today. By the way, no ribbons for everybody in my kids' school. For the record, I'm not a big fan of taunting or excessive celebrations.
