Players speak, 10/4

Hey everyone. Here is a smattering of comments players who were interviewed this evening. They seemed tired. Of course, they didn't arrive on campus until 3 a.m.

Maybe that had something to do with it.

  • TB Ben Tate said he is taking the Tigers' five OL starters (and other selected players like Eric Smith) out to dinner on Monday night. ``I always told them before if I ran for 150 or 200 yards in certain games, but I never got to it. This time I just told them if I hit about the 130 mark that I would take them out to eat."

  • The crew won't be dining on haute cuisine. It's Golden Corral night. ``They all like to eat … that’s too much money."

  • Ted Roof on the defense's fourth-quarter performance: ``In the fourth quarter, when you start managing the game, which the situation dictates, they moved the ball and scored some points through the air. The last play, that’s something doesn’t leave a great taste in your mouth. You have to go back to work. The good news is all those mistakes are correctable, and we’ve got to get them eliminated before we go to Arkansas."

  • LB Adam Herring, who played high-school ball in Fayetteville, on his return to Arkansas: ``That period of my life, it was half my sophomore year and my junior and senior year of high school. So that's where I really developed some friendships and graduated from high school there. It's a big part of my home. I've moved around quite a bit, but I was there two-and-a-half years."

  • Kodi Burns on the rankings: ``I had no idea that we're ranked. We just really weren't getting that much respect. That's something that we've all realized on this team and something that we all really stopped worrying about it. We leave it up to those guys who make those decisions. We just go out there and play football, and we're 5-0 at this point and hopefully we'll be 6-0 next week."

Are there any Auburn fans on this blog? I am so relaxed right now thinking about and enjoying our win over the East Tenn. hound dogs. Tomorrow about this time, I will be anything but relaxed thinking about the team's trip to the Arky pig sty. I truly feel that we have a chance next Sat. and I know that this team is on the way to being special. That is not surprising when you think about it. After all it is Auburn, a very special place.

Regarding Eltoro: "I don’t know if I want to get into what’s holding kids back, but he just needs to keep working," Roof said. "It’s a tough position, and because of the depth situation, there is no learning curve, or time for you to season. You’ve got to come play. So, we’ll just keep working him and I’m sure things will work out."

Very smart move by Mr. Tate... paying a little respect to his blockers...

Todd may want to think about doing something similar as well... they have done a decent job of keeping his jersey clean thus far.

ElToro has gotten away with relying strictly on his talent to get him by up til this point. At this level it takes talent, and technique and a little preparation... he'll learn.

I was perusing one of the UT message boards this afternoon. They are a whiny little bunch! They were even complaining about our band playing too loudly. They were complaining that our fans cheered too loud.

It is quite humorous. Kiffin better start wining... the hillbillies are very restless.

When they showed this video in the stadium, my sister's friend asked who he was! The TN fans around her said it was someone that would be harrassing your QB all night, or something to that affect. They weren't impressed! She said that after one tackle, he got up and did that dance. How come he wasn't flagged?

Just did 30 mins on the elliptical and watched part of replay of Ark & TX A&M. Ark's defense was good, but I don't think as good as TN's. They got the A&M QB rattled pretty early, did get good pressure on him. A&M made lots of mistakes, yes Ark forced them into some. Ark QB is good and very tall! Will have to pressure him. The Adam Herring story seems to be pretty fascinating. I didn't see him as a starter. There was such excitement over Eltoro, but Herring has stepped up. By any chance did Eltoro work out with Tray Blackmon?

Tray Blackmon was a really good player when he wasn't suspended.

I haven't seen anything from The Bull that would say he is going to be a good player yet.

Hopefully Eltoro will take this as a challenge and practice hard to learn the system. This is when you separate the men from the boys.

Off to work, have a great orange and blue day. War Eagle!

6:45 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Blackmon rarely impressed me. He did have a good game pressuring Florida's QB one season, but the wasn't good in pass protection and was too inconsistent. Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens have turned into great linebackers. Now we just need the third to emerge, and Herring seems to be closer than anyone else.

6:50 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens have turned into great linebackers."

Steve, if there is only one thing we disagree on it would be your definition of the word "great".

Bynes and Stevens are good LB's who are very active and seem to be near the ball. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are great.

Just took a look at the Legends poll.....

Dooley voted us 14
Dye voted us 25.....No love from Patrick....

Highest rank is 6 by John Robinson (WAY to high)
Lowest is a No Rank by Fisher Deberry (who is he?) & RC Slocum.

I personally think somewhere between 20 & 25 is appropriate.

Eltoro's lack of production would be easier to understand if he had came into the season with nothing but fall practice under his belt, but he went through spring practice and I don't remember hearing any of these questions about his play.

I'm not saying the coaches started the hype, but they didn't seem to downplay his ability. Were weaknesses in his play just not evident until the games began?

7:08 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUFan, I think Eltoro's play has to be due to a failure to fit in with the scheme, as RK brought up. He was a successful JUCO. I suppose he could also be one of those players that takes a while to get comfortable on the field.

I can't understand Dye ranking us so low after a win at TN. We should take his name off the field and rename it Tommy Tub Field. The CFN guys still have us at #5, and included a little dig at the other polls for finally including AU. TN still #50 and ARK now #42.

I hate a prevent defense. We should have kept playing them the way we had the 1st 3 quarters. Without Mc's kickoff return, we well might have lost the game.

That was somewhat Tubbervillian in their approach to playing with a lead. I hope they learned a lesson.

OK, anybody new willing to drink the Coosa-aid now? If not, what will it take?

Eddie - I respectfulyl disagree.

This team is now good enough to soundly beat the mediocre and chump teams on the schedule. A marked improvement from last year, but nowhere near enough to compete with the big boys in the conference.

Changing form the polls for a moment:

I was puzzled as to why it seemed Au slowed down a couple of times when UT was out of gas. It did seem the refs were trying to 'fix' the clock at odd times. That seemed to give UT a breather.

I like the coaches game plan though. W's mean more than stats. Not a dig, but Air Force can lead the nation in rushing all it wants. I will take wins and a good bowl game anytime,as this will set Au up for 2010.

Not to discuss former staff as I liked most of them, but I think this group has done a great job and AU is not at this level if AU doesn't make some type of change, whatever it was to be. Now don't go bashing the other coaches. This is meant to be a HIGH compliment to the ones we have. This team was good last year but had no confidence and therefore not much production.

Joe Adams (79.0) and Jarius Wright (74.3) are second and third in the SEC, respectively, in receiving yards per game ... I hated that we held UT under 200 yards for 3 quarters then go into protect the lead mode and give up over 200 yards in the 4th quarter alone.

It reminded me of a couple of games vs Bama during the streak where we knew we were going to win and we just wanted not to give up the big play.

I know we played for the FG to put us up by 10 at the end of the 4th, but we could have been a bit more creative then just running it up the gut to set up the FG.

Whatever. You were talking about being able to compete. Those loses point out the competition is there. Auburn's ready to compete. Peter - remove the emotion.

Our starting 11 on offense are a mostly good match against all but maybe one of the teams left on the schedule. Agree with you there, I do. (Yoda voice)

Our starting D is a sieve. Sorry, just where they are right now.

Problem is we run an up-tempo offense which puts the defense on the field a lot. The means the defense needs depth to stay with it for four quarters. Depth we have not yet. (Yoda voice)

So, we gear the offense down a little and it sputters from time to time.

It's the trade off we must make at this time.

Brighter the future seems though. (Yoda voice)

Is there any truth to the league office looking at Blanc's roughing the passer penalty? A writer on Bleacher Report had something about that in his SEC power rankings this morning.

Sensi, I thought the offense did a great job keeping our defense off the field. They did a much better job on third down and did a bang-up job against the SEC's leading rusher. Yeah, they took the last half of the fourth quarter off a big but I think that's where the depth gets us but if you're up 17 and still moving the ball then I'll take it. Sieve is not an appropriate word, just my 2 cents.

8:39 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Peter - the fact that we have an offense makes us competitive. The problem is our defense is good enough to stop people 1/2 the time. As long as we keep scoring touchdowns, we are in the mix.

8:40 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I also feel like this offense can go all Dr. Pepper on a team and slow things down with the running game if they need to control the ball longer and still be effective. It's not their primary style and there's work to be done on that front, but the framework is there.

8:41 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look, the important thing is we are a bowl team (I feel confident of that) and that will give us more practice.

We will need it to prepare Rollison for his attack run.

John,

I remember hearing one of the announcers on ESPN speculate that the SEC would be looking at that. I wouldn't say our defense is as good as it has been recently, but I like the starting line up. Yes, there are concerns such as Eltoro or Herring. I really like our corners. The tackles are solid, but nobody has been spectacular. The ends are above average, but have certainly not been dominating. Bates has done a great job considering his level of experience. I am more comfortable with Etheridge in run support than in pass coverage. Overall I would rate this defense a B and definitely not a seive.

As far as depth, we have done a pretty good job of developing it on the line and in the secondary. We are still a bit weak at the number of linebackers were are playing. We are playing some players who normally would not play due to the lack of depth.

The most notable area where we are playing players that wouldn't normally play is special teams. So far I think we have gotten by with it. Hopefully they have been learning from experience. I do hope we stick with PPL returning kicks.

Sensi, either you haven't been watching or you are just tempering your own expecations. Ole Miss is not unbeatable. We have them at home and I think it's a game we can win.

Steve,

We need linebackers - big ones that can tackle and run.

Many teams have them. One will be playing at 2:30 pm CDT this week. Check it out if you have the chance.

Sean,

Houston Nutt's teams always play better once the first loss is out of the way.

"Is there any truth to the league office looking at Blanc's roughing the passer penalty?"

They probably should, it was a stupid play. A late hit leading with his hat.

It also was pretty directly responsible for their final TD.

I'm just glad this place brightened up a little bit.

When I got home from the game, I thought we had lost by all the complaining that was on here about our D. Most of that came from one person, but it was like people just didn't want to enjoy a win.

I like Bynes and Stevens and Herring to some degree. After that, there isn't much. Names like Wade Christopher and Chris Humphries come to mind. Until this season, names like that would have never been on the field.

Eltoro is definitely the most questionable. The way he plays in games hasn't matched up with the descriptions I have read from practices. He looks hesitant.

Eltoro Freeman = Trey Blackmon minus actual tackling ability and off-the-field issues.

I would put Ole Miss in with UGA & Ark for games we could possibly win Sensi. I want to put LSWho there too - but I just can't at the moment - though they may have used up there Last Play Luck to Win they usually save for the Tigers on the 'Dawgs & Miss St.

Why limit cussing out Sensi on Tuesdays?

Nothing makes you feel better about yourself then demeaning someone else.

Sensi, no need to cuss you out, but I'll listen.

The Rebs didn't exactly play great against Vandy.

9:01 AM

Sensi,

The answer to that question is no. However if Tim Tebow was Bama's QB last year, they would have on it all.

I'll go on a limb and say it.

Loganville,

Miss. State screwed that up for them so they didn't waste any mojo there.

The refs get an assist in last week's game.

LSU still has loads of talent. It's just unfocused right now or it seems that way to me.

Many have done it. Even some from here.

Also, speaking of the classless nation. I noticed two proudly dressed bama fans that made their way into my (Auburn) section this week. That takes some real nerve to show up with all that crappy garb on in a place where both teams absolutely despise you.

i had a UT lady cuss me under her breath saturday nite at the game. i was most amused by it. ;) and i was even on my best behavior. i really was.

I saw a few bammers too. Well obviously we saw the same guy considering you were only a row or so in front of us. At first I was a little embarrassed that an Auburn fan was cussing him out, but then I realized if the dude is gonna show up completely decked out in Crimson to an Auburn-Tenn game, he wanted the attention.

9:07 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, I saw some rogue Bammers running around on Saturday. I agree, why show up? Only bammer fans.

Scottie, I got chewed by some older woman at Vol Walk...couldn't even believe it. All I was doing was standing there taking pictures.

Ole Miss is very beatable - SC exposes a multitude of problems including a hesitant, indecisive QB and a suspect defense. Oklahoma is the normal Oklahoma, beating up weak opposition and falling to quality teams. (Jay, you gotta fix your ballot). Mike Berry is a great player, but he's a contender for this week's cockroach award - on his back with this feet straight up.

9:09 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The Bama fans probably had a group discussion and said we need to make our presence known at our two biggest rivals game just to remind them there is something bigger to hate than each other.

It worked.

9:10 AM
Blogger coosa said...

Sensi - I understand your concerns, but don't see how you can put LSU and Ole Miss into the unbeatable category. We may lose both games, but I think we are better than either of those teams. Ask Miss St if we are better than LSU.

Lots of good analysis on the HABOTN this morning. I think our defense is an average SEC defense, at best. But an average SEC defense if still pretty good compared to other leagues. Special teams look to have improved; the younger guys are getting better.

But it is our offense that causes the CFN guys to put us in the top 5. I believe that our offense is good enough to score points on anyone, and give us a chance on anyone. Yes, even in game 12.

However, the shortcomings of our defense also mean we could get blown out in a game or 2. If we do, I think we will bounce back. I still think the WV game was the most important of the season. If we had lost it, our confidence would have collapsed. Being 4-0 going to TN put us in great mental shape to win the game. Now we could lose a game without it destroying our confidence and cause our players to think it was 2008 all over.

I don't like the way we match up with the hogs. We will have to score a lot of points to win.

RK,

You mean "just to remind them there is something bigger than each other," don't you?

9:11 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

By the way...the UT seating is the worst in the SEC. It is a pain in the butt to get up and down the row and you have knees in your back along with your knees in the person in front back as well. I would also like to think the guy directly in front of me that showed up almost passed out to the game that kept letting the nastiest farts rip thru out the game. Really great that he showed up to the game.

9:11 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

we had two fussy older women (apparently UT faculty) sitting in front of us that complained about everything from the time we sat down. i accidentally dropped my coke and spilled 75% of it. the woman may have had 2 or 3 drops (at most) on her but you would've thought i dumped it on her face. she missed an entire quarter of the game after she stomped off like a pissed off toddler. it was quite amusing. i wanted her to say something to my face SOOOOOOOO bad.

9:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We had improved special teams in the UT game...except for kickoff coverage.

We gave up almost 200 yards in kick returns which set UT up with good field position.

If we can get our kickoff coverage down, then it would help our D greatly.

I watched the game on TV yesterday and it was funny, after the Blanc hit on the last drive you could hear some UT fan scream "YOU DON'T START THE CLOCK BACK AFTER A PERSONAL FOUL".

Actually you do, however great job projecting your redneck voice out over national TV.

Scottie B- That's funny.

The rudest UT guy I ran into held the door open for me at a restaurant and said I won't be this polite if we lose. So all in all, I have to say the fans up there were fine. Our section at the game was strictly Auburn (plus the Bammer), so maybe that's why I didn't have any problems. They don't seem to like their team all that much though.

Duh, yeah - Eric Berry.

BTW I go to Bentonville, AR a lot (had to pay Arkansas income tax one year). Fly to NWA and drive SLOWLY - heavily patrolled - to Fayetteville. I really like the fans in Arkansas. Great people. My favorite promotion by a phone company in Arkansas - advertised the red blackberry as Hog Red, created impression made specifically for Arky and sold a ton. They don't get out much.

Brethren, a few thoughts to guide your day. The task at hand is Arkansas, and nothing else.

Remember the admonition from Matthew 6:34.

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (NKJV)"

And remember the vision of Peter from Acts 10:9-13, it's good to eat bacon.

"The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And a voice came to him, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.'”
