SEC suspends an officiating crew

Hey everyone. The Southeastern Conference has suspended one of its officiating crews after it was judged to have made an incorrect personal-foul call for a second consecutive week.

The crew that penalized Georgia WR A.J. Green for unsportsmanlike conduct against LSU two weeks ago (a call the SEC rebuked) also made an errant personal foul call in last weekend's Florida-Arkansas game.

Here's the official release:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 21, 2009) -- The officiating crew from Saturday’s Arkansas at Florida football game will be removed from its next scheduled assignment on Oct. 31 and will not be assigned to officiate as a crew until Nov. 14, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive announced Wednesday.

“A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews,” said Slive. “I believe our officiating program is the best in the country, however, there are times when these actions must be taken.”

Following each weekend, the conference office reviews games from the previous week, using video replays as well as interviews with officials, coaches and administrators.

“While only a few calls have been identified, the entire crew shoulders responsibility for each play. I have taken this action because there must be accountability in our officiating program,” added Slive. “Our institutions expect the highest level of officiating in all of our sports and it is the duty of the conference office to uphold that expectation.”

In addition, there will be an impact on eligibility for post-season bowl assignments for the crew.

I am hoping to see Caudle play. Burns has proven that he can't be the guy. Rollison shouldn't burn his redshirt at this point. Trotter is injured. Moseley shouldn't burn his redshirt either.

Good for the SEC. The UGA call likely cost UGA the game. You can't change that, but you can make officials think about how they are doing their jobs.

5:07 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I don't think you can say this one call cost Arkansas, but all the same, I thought it was a worse call than the A.J. Green or Charles Scott flags.

Rumor was they were scheduled to do the Bama game this weekend..

Don't know if that is true or not though.

I think something had to be done. Four high profile blown calls in two weeks is a bit much. 3 of them were seemingly pulled straight out of there butts.

5:15 PM
Blogger michael said...

Something else about the Arkansas game - does anyone else remember the play where the Arkansas player kicked the ball out of the florida player's hand during a long run, causing a turnover/ I would venture to say that was a bigger blown call than the ones against Arkansas toward the end. So suck on that, hogs!

5:16 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Dang! They were suppose to ref the the Bama UT game Saturday, woulda been funny if they blew that one

5:17 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

How Michael? In that case they didn't see something that many wouldn't have noticed (I didn't in real time), however they simply made up the call in question against Arky.

5:24 PM
Blogger michael said...

On a long run late in the game, the safety was getting juked and tried to kick out his leg to trip the Florida player as he was about to go by him. Instead of tripping him, he actually kicked the ball loose. The announcers even noticed he kicked his leg out, but didn't comment on the legality of the play.

You can't do that. That is cheating.

That wasn't the worst no-call in the Arky-Florida game.

The worst no-call was when the Arky receiver ran for 40 yards then lost control of the ball right at the goalline. That should have been an incompletion.

Heck, even Verne called it right. Inexcusable.

I take this to mean that Slive and Redding didn't like the other calls in the Fla.-Ark. game or didn't like the feedback they received from the crew on the previous announcement. This was presumably a dead story after the announcement that the personal foul call was wrong.

I'm not sensitive. I really want to know. Even people who know me really well have said stuff like that ( and prefaced it with "I probably don't need to tell you this, but.."). I'm just intrigued.

A little background about us, though. We've been dating for six years. At one point in our relationship, I lived in a fraternity house at Auburn while she was going to grad school six hours away. I've never come close to cheating, and the opportunities have been far more and for better reason than anything Vegas can present. She's my gal. I like it that way, or I'd not be doing this. I don't have a ticking internal clock, family pressure, or need to commit (G-d knows I fear that!).

I hear a lot of optimism from Auburn fans this week. Even Jay(not an AU fan) picked Auburn over LSU.

My 2 (main) concerns for Saturday:
1)The Auburn run defense. I keep hearing how Auburn will load up and stop the run, forcing Jefferson to beat the defense with his arm. Does anyone think the defense can stop ANY team from running the ball? We haven't seen it so far this season, don't see that changing Saturday.

2) Trindon Holliday vs Auburn's special teams. Does anyone feel good about watching the coverage teams trying to tackle Holliday? Me, either.

Taking into account the struggling offense, I don't feel very good about Saturday night.

LSU- 27
Auburn- 17

Peter,
It was more just the traditional thing to say when someone is on their way to their bachelor party. Nothing about you personally. I said it to my son-in-law whose bachelor party had no women, no alcohol and was just a bunch of college guys grilling out massive amounts of red meat and playing Guitar Hero. (A couple of younger brothers were there who were not of drinking age, so they forwent the alcohol.) Have fun, and be careful :)

9:11 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Shut it, Scottie. I'm really terrified of that possibility. Stuff tends to get out of hand quickly with the people I'm going to be with. Add to that that they've never been together to feed off one another, and the fact that they all feel the need to bring more mayhem to this occassion than normal, and this could get scary. I'm drinking because I'm worried about that :-).
