Gene Chizik speaks ... briefly

Hey everyone. The Head Coach spoke briefly with reporters this morning about Le Bowl D'Iron and what the team will be accomplishing during the next few months.

Here is an overview ...

  • On the game: ``There were some field-position issues that I wish we would have capitalized on more than we did. We had some chances in the second half that I wish we would have been able to capitalize on. Field-position issues at the end of the day, with special teams and things of that nature, that cost us some points."

  • On what Auburn will do between now and the bowl announcement: ``We'll really focus on academic world, not that we don't usually, and we're going to give our guys some time to heal up. They're beat up and bruised up. Guys were playing with all kinds of injuries. We'll give them an opportunity for their bodies to heal."

  • On his decision to play Drew Cole, who may have been eligible for a medical redshirt, against Alabama: ``We wanted to make sure that we played anybody and everybody that we thought could help us win that game ... that made sense. He's been getting healthier."

  • On his role in bowl selection: ``I'm worried about recruiting -- that's what I'm worried about right now. We're hitting the road asap."

  • He said recruits who attended the game, who still are on campus at this hour, were enthralled with the atmosphere.

I am pulling for a UK win, by the way.

I'd love to see Rich Brooks' team finish 8-4 and second in the East. That's an accomplishment for the 'Cats in the other other blue.

Never mind - I just did a little research.

The last bowl game AU won by more than two scores was the 1990 Citrus (after the '89 season) when we beat tOSU 31-14. If memory serves, that game was close until the final quarter.

The last bowl game AU won by 21 or more was in 1974, when Shug's last good team beat Darrel Royal's Texas Longhorns 27-3 in the Gator.

Wow. No wonder I couldn't remember.

"You can't trick or pass every down"

No, but you can keep the motion going and give the threat of it more than just the first few drives.

Not that it cost us the game, but it seems after the 1st quarter in recent weeks the offense cuts a lot of the motion and the threat of reverses and the such out.

For the record, I'm pulling for Kentucky because they deserve it more.

And I'd hate for us to ever be on the bad side of a 24 year losing streak to anyone.

I think it's Peach or Music City, which means an ACC opponent either way. Too bad it won't be F$U.

Nice obscure reference, Norm!

By the way the ESPN U crew is far worse than the Davie Jones team.

They had notes for the game and they just said them in random order the whole game.

"Big rivalry game"

"Randall Cobb is from Knoxville"

"Kentucky hasn't won in 24 years"

"Kentucky won at Auburn earlier this year for the first time since 1961"

"The winner of this game finishes 2nd in the SEC East"

That is pretty much all that was said the whole game.

This has been an usual but entertaining season for the SEC. Usually I divide the SEC into three groups of four. Usually you have four front runners, four middle of the pack, and four that show up. This season there are three groups, but the middle of the pack is 9 of the teams. Bama and Florida are in a group by themselves. Vandy has it's own little special group all to itself.

Watched "The Blind Side" with the Fam yesterday. I previously read the book and even though I knew what to expect, tears flowed anyway. America needs more folks like the Touhys.

Cincy ..the SEC has 10 schools that are bowl eligible and only 8 designated bowl contracts. One team will go to the BCSCG plus the 8 contracts leaves 1 SEC team going to a bowl outside the SEC contract realm. 6 teams are 7-5. Bowl picks will come down to projected bowl income. AU travels to bowls well, so we got that going for us.

Looking at this years stats, our lack of defensive depth shows as we gave up an average of over a TD a game in the 4th quarter. It was the only quarter that we didn't outscore our opponents.

8:14 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We averaged 25 points per game in the SEC, giving up 27 per game.

We averaged 49 points per game in non-conference games, giving up 26 per game.

La Tech was the only team that didn't get at least 21 points on us this year.

I'm so not used to a D giving up that many points.

8:19 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ben Tate finished the regular season averaging 105 yards per game rushing.

As a team we rushed for 2566 with 21 TD's and passed for 2622 with 24 TD's so we were really balanced on offense.

8:22 AM

If I'm not mistaken Darvin Adams lead the SEC with 10 receiving TD's and Antonio Coleman lead with 9.5 sacks.

RK ..looking at your bowl projection, UGA and UT are the SEC teams with 4-4 conference records, so I'm guessing that's why you gave them the Outback and Peach Bowl picks.

That leaves 4 teams with 7-5(3-5) records. Your last 4 picks seem to marry up geographical proximity and travellin' reps. Like THT, I hope your right.

next year the offense should not have any problems adjusting to a new QB. AU hasn't had much success at developing young Qb's but this is nothte same AU. Ayecock ran it, Blake ran it,stallworth ran it so they may be young but they do not have a big learning curve for the particulars of the offense. They jsut have to adjust to the speed.

I guess since WTc didn't include his recruiting disclaimer, he has now started following it. Next we'll find out it's OK to ask Michael 'bout his Montana goat farm.

He lives in Opelika doesn't he?

I haven't seen Aycock recently, but he seems to have potential to develop like Fannin.

I say we need 2 toprated Juco OL the most.

I would go to Bham and risk my life egressing Legion Field just to see AU jump all over ND.

It doesn't mea much now but UAT is only 2 points head of UT in the PA and fell the 3rd in the coaches poll.

interesting.

Wake ..it may be, I can't remember and ain't asking.

That should be the AP not PA.

1:21 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Wake he does live in Opelika but to come to 7 AU home games on unofficial visits just seems odd for a 'hard' commit' to a big rival school. FSJ and I have posted before on this. It just seems odd that he keeps showing up. Either Au has not backed off of him or he is not 'solid' to UAT. Other than that I can;t see why he would keep coming to the games or why Au would allow him to come to the games.

Win or lose today, it's a treat to watch the Colts' offense.

The Texans have a very good defense. They nearly killed Addai on a pass play at his 10 ... the next thing you know, five plays have past and the Colts are knocking on the door.

Blogger digger4au said...

I haven't posted today so let me say I was amazed that I only fell from No.4 to No. 12 in the pickums since I forgot to pick this week and got a big fat zero.
No blame no shame for the loss to the infidels, just some tired players there at the end.

Mark Gottfried should be beaten and forced to live in Starkville for ten years.

Jay can you call your associates at ESPN and tell them not to make those predictions?

Any of you dog people on here... Have any of you bought a Coolaroo bed for your dog? If so, how is it?
My dog eats the stuffing out of his beds... I'm trying to find something he won't chew up.

Watching the replay. Just saw the Adams long TD. M Barron is still looking for his jock. That was a great play

5:41 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

No I haven't D. Miller but we need one for our dog... she rips the stuffing out of hers too. Although she more snuggle with her bed than sleeps on it so I'm not sure she would use that bed.

One thing I noticed from Friday is that AU only ran like 50 plays. Well below our average.

Miller and Wake - our Golden did the same, but those first 3 years or so she tore up absolutely everything up to and including pulling up the invisible fence wire with her teeth all the while getting shocked. She was beyond a doubt the worst puppy I've ever had (she'd put Marley to shame) but has turned out to be the best dog ever. Anyway, she's an indoor dog and sleeps on the floor wherever she pleases.

Tree has been purchased, erected, decorated and the house is mostly decorated too. I'll tell you this much, trying to put those hooks into hundreds of ornaments with only one good eye and no depth perception is quite the exercise. Front and back yards have been cleaned up, dog has been bathed. It's been a busy day.

5:53 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Our Golden is gotten alot better about eating everything, at almost 2 years old now. She mostly only chews up her toys now which is obviously much preferred over the furniture, shoes, clothes, pens, markers, important documents, and just about everything she could. She still of course any piece of food she can get within 10 feet of and still loves underwear, but its gotten much better. Our last dog was the kinda dog you described... she was a horrible puppy... but made for a great dog after about her first 3 years.

WTC ..I'm watching the replay also. It seems that we created more, yet missed more opportunities than Bama to make differences in the game.

We outschemed Bama. We just missed several offensive plays that were available to us.

Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Favre 4th quarter stats
32/48 392 yards 3 Touchdowns

10 yards shy of his career high in yards in a single game

6:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hoopie,

I'd be interested in seeing the offensive production by quarter for each team.

It looked to me like Alabama's defense contained Auburn pretty good after the two scores..

Obviously the long pass hurt, but being down 14-0 to winning 26-21 is a big difference.

Sure Todd missed a wide open Trott...However, that happens in football. Ingram missed an easy toss to Julio in the end zone.

6:15 PM
Blogger Dear Leader said...

I noticed the refs did not 'release" the ball until the play clock was at 25 seconds many times... seems they were slowing down the game intentionally to allow the D to get lined up...

6:19 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

FSJ ...We missed several more wide open passes that would have gone for big yards than you did.

Our rested team initially seemed to match or beat you at the line of scrimmage. After our 3rd qtr offensive miscues kept the D on the field we lost our legs in the 3rd/4th qtr and the lack of subbing for the game showed.

The final drive is on now and we get to see Julio catch the same pass four times.

I have a question.. How does Vince Young pass for 380 + yards and only have one TD pass?

7:01 PM

Cause Vince still isn't THAT good FSJ.

7:11 PM

FSJ ..hate to bring it up, except that I wanted to commend your composure Friday morning when the fellow got out of line on here. RK and someone else also jumped in to help squash it.

I'm hoping that he just didn't realize the spirit in which we were "Hatin" and is not really that devoid of class.

7:27 PM

We only played 14 players on defense, and still shut Ingram down, and continuously spanked him.

And THAT jhag, is why I think Florida wins Saturday. I think they follow Auburn's lead, plus the fact that we winged him a bit. Their DB's should be at least as good as we have, plus they have more than double the depth that our defense has. I go by the Parcell's rule that defense wins championships, and I think Florida may be more rested and more able thn Alabama's.

Anybody else notice that we started getting back to the old school beat 'em up in the first half, take 'em out in the second devense that has been going on? I think if we get the depth our defense can be back to where it was in the past.

tommy,

I think it is a mistake to put too much emphasis on the Auburn game signifying what will happen Saturday...

Auburn was sky high and played their asses off at home in the biggest game of the season for them.

I thought Alabama looked flat early on to be honest.

I can't comprehend how that happens but that's the way it looked. Auburn had something to do with that I am sure...

I don't understand why ND didn't announce it last week...

Everybody knew it was coming.

7:49 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

So you think the injury to Ingram, and keeping him in check isn't going to be something that Florida will exploit?

7:49 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

tommy,

There is more to UA's offense than Ingram.

We have a pretty good backup that probably would be starting at 8 of the other 12 schools.

One game doesn't indicate a trend or anything like that. Otherwise, everybody would duplicate Arkansas' effort against UF...

Now they may whip our rear ends...but it will be because they are better not because of some tip they got from the Auburn game, IMO.

7:52 PM

And Florida won't be sky high and playing their asses off in the biggest game of the season (so far) for them?
