Gene Chizik speaks ... briefly

Hey everyone. The Head Coach spoke briefly with reporters this morning about Le Bowl D'Iron and what the team will be accomplishing during the next few months.

Here is an overview ...

  • On the game: ``There were some field-position issues that I wish we would have capitalized on more than we did. We had some chances in the second half that I wish we would have been able to capitalize on. Field-position issues at the end of the day, with special teams and things of that nature, that cost us some points."

  • On what Auburn will do between now and the bowl announcement: ``We'll really focus on academic world, not that we don't usually, and we're going to give our guys some time to heal up. They're beat up and bruised up. Guys were playing with all kinds of injuries. We'll give them an opportunity for their bodies to heal."

  • On his decision to play Drew Cole, who may have been eligible for a medical redshirt, against Alabama: ``We wanted to make sure that we played anybody and everybody that we thought could help us win that game ... that made sense. He's been getting healthier."

  • On his role in bowl selection: ``I'm worried about recruiting -- that's what I'm worried about right now. We're hitting the road asap."

  • He said recruits who attended the game, who still are on campus at this hour, were enthralled with the atmosphere.

Oh I realize there's more than Ingram. But according to ESPN he was going to win the Heisman, therefore making him the only player on your team. Just ask Tony Barnhart and the other shmuck on the broadcast that guaranteed Ingram would get his yards and your team would win by double digits. Apologies FSJ a little last minute venting. Its as though those guys based their thoughts on last year and didn't know the game was known as the Iron Bowl for a reason, not some stinkin trophy you hold up.

Bama had a much tuffer game than UF and has one extra day to prepare/rest.

Most of the season I thought Bama might be better. Now I think that UF will have the tuffness needed to keep from getting worn down by Bama and will win in a close game. A lot of the X's, O's and coaching will cancel out.

I think FL has less of a chance of beating uat than we did. The IB set up perfectly for AU - a week off, the revenge factor, and the fact that everybody had already awarded the game to bammer before the kickoff. The uat players are human, and don't think all that didn't have an effect on them. They expected to quickly dispatch AU and then look ahead to FL. The reason we couldn't beat them is that they are just so much better than us.

I watched the game with an uncle - Ga Tech grad, and his wife, Ga State grad. I loved it just before the game when my aunt, who isn't much of a football fan, said out of the blue, "I think AL is evil." They pulled for AU just so I'd be happy. I told them before the game AU had a 20% chance of winning; raised it as high as 35% after the first 2 scores, but dropped it back to 20% at halftime.

When we went backward 16 yds after getting the ball at the 44, I dropped the odds to 10%. To me, that series was the most important of the game, and we did nothing with it. Maybe in future years we'll have the talent to score in those situations.

So congrats to FSJ and the other bammers; I think you will beat both FL and TX and can claim a NC that is at least somewhat genuine.

With UF as my 2nd favorite team, i will be pulling for the Gators. i think they have as much or more talent than UAT. And they have Tebow. he will be the difference. UAT knows it he will do all he can and they will not be able to stop him.

UAT has a very good team, they just picked another year to have the 2nd best team in the nation (or 3rd). I know many of you dislike Tebow, but IMO he is the best player in college football. Reminds a lot of Flutie. The kid is just a winner. Period.

WTC, as of now I don't hate you, but that could change as we get closer to the game.

As much as I hate UF, my money would be on the Gators if I was a betting man.

8:40 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ-We agree on that for sure. At the beginning of the year I thought we had an offense that once they got ahead, the coaches would mash the gas and put the opponent away. We did not do that against UK, UGA, nor UAT and it cost us in all those games.

When AU failed to capitalize after getting good field positon (where we went backwards for two plays) I was troubled. ANY points at that time makes the game a different strategy. UAT has to play for the TD instead of a slow drive where once inside the 35 theyf elt good about getitng 3 points and the lead.

WTC, where I got troubled in the game was early on. Our third drive when we didn't use any motion ran the ball once and then Todd made two straight bad throws to Trott, I felt once we slowed down on the motion plays that Alabama's D vs Todd's inconsistent arm was going to keep them in the game.

8:49 PM

Dislike of other teams seems to depend on experiences.

I've had 2 awful experiences at the Swamp and with several UF fans(especially when I lived in Fl).

I respect Tebow on many levels. Watching the Sat morning ESPN tributes to Tebow, I realized that he is complicit in some of those film productions that are hyping him. That is disappointing.

8:53 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ-We agree again (dang it). I felt all along that he would win it hands down if he had a decent year. Some feel he was overlooked when Bradford won it. I think he gets votes because of last year.
The heisman long ago turned into a career college thing. If Ingram has a very good year next year, he will be in the running for it from the start and can garner much more notority.

8:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

btw...regarding the onside kick....

The only way I can see that you could combat the one that Auburn used is to attack the ball before it goes ten yards..If you wait for it you are dead. I was terribly disappointed in that.... I think everybody in the stadium knew it was coming.

Stoops would be nuts to go to ND. He now makes $4mil/yr. Is more necessary? ND may be too far from talent pools to be revived.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I'm really hoping Meyer goes to Notre Dame, if Bama beats UF I think there is a 33% chance he goes. Obviously its not going to happen if he is gearing up for the NC game. I don't think there is anyway Saban goes. If he had already won a championship there I would say there would be a slight chance. But he is going to want at least 1, probably 2 championships before he would move on.

9:32 PM

Alabama needed a coach that demanded full authority so that the old guard couln't interfere.

ND is in the wrong geographic area to be able to get enough talent to be consistent top tier.

I'm a Tebow fan. I think he is the best player in college football. Period. His stats may not be as flashy this year, but if I had to round up a college football team from current players, he'd be my first choice.

I think Tebow deserves the Heisman. But I think it will go to Colt McCoy, barring a disaster on Saturday. That Stanford RB is awfully impressive. Ingram? Not so much. I still am shocked at the Heisman hype he was receiving.

9:56 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I don't think Tebow has done much to deserve the Heisman this year, but then again not many have. I think the only way he has a shot is if he puts the team on his back and beats Bama in a shootout. But since I don't think Bama is capable of engaging in a shootout against any defense much less UF's I don't think he wins it.

I don't hate Tebow, I am not a big fan of his theatrics on the field, but overall he seems like a good guy.

That being said I hate Meyer with every inch of my body. Same goes for UF as a whole.

Very true THT, assuming Cincy wins saturday, THEN I would say they have an argument of getting screwed assuming they are left out of the championship. Just like we were screwed in 04. Granted I think our 04 team was far superior to this year's Cincinnati team (or any team this year to be honest with you), but its still bullshit that a team can go undefeated in a BCS conference and not play for a championship.

A non BCS team plays every year for a conference championship and a spot in a BCS bowl. If they find themselves in the NC game well they pulled a great feat. But it shouldn't be expected.

Who will be shopping for a new coach this year?

anybody know how often there isn't at least one HC change in the SEC? Most of the time? Rarely? I don't have a clue.

Last time there wasn't a head coaching change in the SEC following a season was 2005. Before that, you have to go back to the twentieth century to find the next time there wasn't a coaching change after a season.

Looks like 2009 may end of being one of those aberrations as well. Definitely don't expect anybody to get fired. If anyone leaves, it will be of their own volition.

Off to work. I don't expect too much talk from most of the Bama fans. There will still be those that didn't watch the game and will come to MY office to harass me.

We need the coaching carosel to crank up. I really don't want to discuss the SECCG, bowl seatings and/or the Heisman all week.

I mean recruiting is sortof quiet, Lowder has been neutered and we like our coach, so there's not much AU substance to discuss. After several years of constant controversy, the void is suddenly apparent. I suppose we should rejoice that this is a sign of AU football program health.

This is one of those times that sportswriter JGTate usually shines with some sortof goody.

According to infidelity statistics, women and men are equally likely to cheat.

Why do the news/gossip shows jump all over a male's infidelity and ignore most female infidelities?

Morning, Hotties! What are we going to talk about today?

Someone throw a good rumor out there for us to chew on :)

I'm out for most of the day. Y'all have a swell one.

Blogger Jet said...

If a Bammer says to me today at work -- in an unsolicited fashion -- that the reason the game was close was that we scored on trick plays, I will shoot them.

Please raise bail money for me and for my defense fund.

A reverse is not a trick play if you've run it once or twice a game all season long. It's no more a trick play than, say, faking a handoff and throwing a winning touchdown pass off a bootleg.

If you throw a backwards pass to a QB lined up as a wide receiver, it ain't a trick play, it's obvious.

The only "trick" play I saw from Auburn was the onsides kick, on which Auburn tipped its hand in a textbook situation to run an onsides kick.

Good morning, Hotties! UGH. It's so hard to come back to work after having four days off.

Tebow vs. McElroy

Who would you pick? I'm going with a former Heisman Trophy winner and the one that has started for the last three years. Besides that, I HATE UAT!

McCoy wins the Heisman.

The kid from stanford wins the
Doak Walker (Ingram lost it Saturday and the Stanford won it Saturday)

AU has 22 kids committed now. Can sign only 28 to get 25 in. Looks like all but one are on pace to get in.. So if they have 4 slots left, who do they take?
CJ Moseley (LB)
VBeasley (LB)
EMack (OL)
MLattimore (RB)
The Whittaker kid (DL)
The Thornton Kid (DL)
The Stone kid (OL)
Really need at least 1 or 2 more DB's.

(Assuming all the above choose AU)

Jet,

Don't shoot to kill, just do what the kids do today and shoot in the leg, then you don't get attempted murder charges.

McCoy or Tebow win Heisman. I think Ingram fell off the radar. If Tebow has a big game and Florida wins the SEC CG, I say Tebow, if not, I say McCoy.

Seriously?? Lemme guess..this is a gotcha, ain't it? You seriously trying to make a point with this flacid material (yes...I used flacid..it fits here). Okay, I pray yer writter game (g'dm Mongolians!!)

You know, you're exactly right. After that brutal slobber-knocker you endured vs. Chattanooga last week, it's totally plausible that we would see an utterly-depleted and flacid bama team. If you guys were whipped in your victory over Chatt...just imagine what they would do to us. I mean, geez, if we had been tasked with having to confront the juggernaut that is Chattanooga, I believe we'd just save everyone the time and forfeit the bama game. What little chance we had vs. you guys would be poof...gone. Gone like Mike Price after after that rollin' night in the cola.

I'm glad you pointed out that we were abnormally well prepared after our lengthy and restorative two weeks of rapturous leisure that we spent on bora bora (or was it cabo??). We were off so long I can't remember. Is now a good time to set fire to that small glimmer of hope that I extracted in our close loss "moral victory" to your clearly superior and praise-worthy football team? I appreciate your helping me to evade the broken spirit that I would most certainly have incurred should I have clung to the frivolous hopes that Chizik could actually coach, and that AU actually had talent, vastly improved recruiting, and genuinely enviable prospects for future success.

Where do I mail your Christmas present?

Sincerely,

Appropriately crestfallen Auburn fan.

Love the response.

Any bama fan that plays that card is in denial. They better be worrying about Florida, which by the way played FIU the week before and it still managed to destroy Florida State. Like I said, I hope they enjoy the Sugar Bowl again. I wonder if they lose to TCU if it would be the Fans fault also?

So, Jay G, looking at rankings, you giving hope to Pitt knocking off Cincy? That Pitt didn't get to WVU's QB much/often last week when they dropped that one, may be telling.

It's only the educated bama fans with common sense that will admit how well Auburn played and that it could have easily gone the other way.

From what I gather about what he's been saying this morning (I don't listen to Jox), Jay Barker does NOT fall into above category.

Any moral victories on your tasting menu?

Just took a look on cbs sportsline to see what the "experts" thought about the Heisman. I don't have any idea if these guys havea a vote, nor do I know when they were polled for this, but their consensus was 1 Ingram 2 Gerhart 3 McCoy 4 Moore 5 Spiller

cbs sportsline Heisman

7:51 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

ESPN has backed off the Ingram Heisman Campaign. That is all you need to know about his chances to win. If ESPN isn't on board, then you have NO SHOT. I hate the Heisman. It is not the award it once was. If you are not on the best team, you rarely ever get a sniff unless you just have ridiculous number as Tebow did when he won. Sorry, I hate popularity contests and that is all the Heisman is....a joke.

Yeah, ESPN is squarely in the Colt McCoy corner. Not that he doesn't deserve it. He's been good for years. ESPN jumps on the hot property faster than a real estate mogul.

Toby Gerhart has a lot of heart, but he's as slow as molasses.

8:03 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I don't care if he's slow if he runs over peeps as he did in the ND game. What he's done this year might actually be more impressive considering his lack of speed.

Gerhardt has done well in the PAC 10. The speed and gang tacking in the SEC would eat him up. I'm sure he would still create good highlights while trucking someone though.

Prolly will have a good pro career like Heath Evans.
