Gene Chizik speaks ... briefly

Hey everyone. The Head Coach spoke briefly with reporters this morning about Le Bowl D'Iron and what the team will be accomplishing during the next few months.

Here is an overview ...

  • On the game: ``There were some field-position issues that I wish we would have capitalized on more than we did. We had some chances in the second half that I wish we would have been able to capitalize on. Field-position issues at the end of the day, with special teams and things of that nature, that cost us some points."

  • On what Auburn will do between now and the bowl announcement: ``We'll really focus on academic world, not that we don't usually, and we're going to give our guys some time to heal up. They're beat up and bruised up. Guys were playing with all kinds of injuries. We'll give them an opportunity for their bodies to heal."

  • On his decision to play Drew Cole, who may have been eligible for a medical redshirt, against Alabama: ``We wanted to make sure that we played anybody and everybody that we thought could help us win that game ... that made sense. He's been getting healthier."

  • On his role in bowl selection: ``I'm worried about recruiting -- that's what I'm worried about right now. We're hitting the road asap."

  • He said recruits who attended the game, who still are on campus at this hour, were enthralled with the atmosphere.

I've always been called a glass half-empty guy.

Not sure I understand the phrase.

If the goal is to fill the glass and THEN drink it, couldn't a half empty glass indicate that the glass was filled and half has been drunk and therefore some satisfaction/goals have been achieved? Wouldn't that be a more positive/hopeful outlook than someone still waiting to get satisfaction or achieve?

Of course when I was in my 30's, the motto would have been ..knock the glass outta the way and take the entire barrel.

Look, this just caught my attention. It is not the reason we lost, but it makes you go hmm....

Take a look at the pickoff moves made by bama at the 1:50 mark and the next play, both key 3rd down plays in their game winning TD drive. Pretty sure what they did is not legal.

Bama Pickoff Moves?

11:34 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pick plays are part of the game..

I'm sure Auburn runs a few too.

11:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

Alabama ran that play the whole game. They try to get a pick and use the ref as another pick to open someone on the drag route.

It's done all the time, it rarely gets flagged.

11:39 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

yeah, but you cannot make contact while the ball is in the air or before throw is made, i'm pretty sure about that.

11:39 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Look, I totally get the pick play. But there are rules to running it. Maybe i'm off base in thinking that you cannot make contact till after the ball is caught.

11:40 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Also, everyone was beyond 5 yards. Like I said, it is not why we lost. We lost because we did nothing with the ball when we had it after the stop on 4th down.

11:42 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

You are right it should be flagged, but it happens all the time and almost never gets called.

It got called last night in the Steelers/Ravens game, but refs were instructed to flag almost everything in that game to keep both teams from killing each other.

Bama also tried all game to use the ref as a pick and it cost them because he was in the way of the pass at least twice.

11:50 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

In a year or two, it won't matter that Bama is running pick plays.

We'll beat 'em anyway.

11:56 AM
Blogger Harrison said...

pick plays are run all the time, but the goal is to run routes close enough to where the 2 defenders naturally get in each others way. That is legal. Any bumping by offensive players makes it illegal.
We noticed it a lot during that last quarter

12:01 PM

Starting with drive # 3, 8 out of our next 12 1st down plays were runs to the right side of the line by the running backs.

Of the 4 that weren't were a screen to Fannin, a Burns run out of the wildcat, a reverse attempt by T-Zach and a run outside by Fannin.

12:04 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FSJ...maybe the point Eddie is trying to make is that the #2 team in the nation needed to do those things to beat a 7-5 football team. Florida is not a 7-5 football team.

Go Gators. ;)

Blogger Norm said...

People, people, people... sure there are a lot of "what if's" and so forth about this game. As good AU fans we all have ideas on how this slipped from our grasp. It surprises me that I'm the only Hottie who sees this clearly. The reason AU lost the game is absolutely, 100% George W. Bush's fault.

12:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The point I am making is that it happens in every football game no matter who is playing.

I would venture to guess that a pick play has been run in every single SEC game this season.

It's like holding. It happens. Sometimes it is called...sometimes it isn't.

12:08 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

With Bama and Florida this year, it's never called. Calls are never overturned. I'm not talkin' bout the IB. I don't have any grievances really from that game.

SEC front office got its dream match-up this year. Maybe somebody can crash the party next year.

12:11 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- There is a difference between missing calls and deliberately running plays that should be flagged. Let's not debate that. There were bad calls on both sides. I saw a few block in the backs that should be called against bama, but wasn't.

Probably a good no call, but it looks to me like Ziemba grabbed the inside of the shoulder pads after overrunning his block.

12:24 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Faker...you don't seriously have a problem with Ziemba on that play do you?

If that was Julio Jones and Bama running the reverse, you would surely have a problem with a flag there, wouldn't you?

The contact is basically incidental. There had to be what, less than half a second of contact between the two players?

12:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

By the way, I've talked bad about Ziemba for his false starts over the years, however I'd like to praise him for the one he had on our second drive that took away a horrible pass for an interception by Kodi.

I don't think Ziemba's play was a good no-call. I think it would've been a bad call if they had pulled the flag. Period.

12:30 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- Once I again. I will state that I believe there is a difference in running plays that should be illegal vs the Refs missing calls. Missed calls happen. Deliberately running plays that are illegal is something else to me. Congrats you won and I stated that I didn't think that is why you won the game. Just something that I just now noticed. I do find it funny that you had to run the play over and over again. Of course it makes sense since we took your bread and butter run game out of commission. I get it.

Ziemba was not holding. He was slapping a "Long Live Queen Michael of Eurasia" sticker on the Bama player.

In honor of Aero, RK, Hoopie, and WTC, Gus had Ziemba time his false start to prevent a Kodi INT, which would have resulted in strokes for RK and WTC with the full knowledge that the spoiled brat UATite would sling the football making the resulting 3rd down much more management. He's a clever coordinator.

Holding Alabama to just two TD's in the 1st half when they had spent the whole half on our side of the field was a welcome sight from our D.

I think the average starting point for Alabama in the 1st half was the 46 yard line.

Ziemba's hold would never have been called between the tackles, but since it was in the open field I thought they would for sure call it. I saw it happen live and didn't even enjoy the rest of the run, saying "Great, Ziemba held, this one is coming back." And then no flag.... and then wooohooooooo!!!!!

I don't mind the no call, but if it had been called, I would have no complaints because it was illegal and though small it clearly kept the Alabama player from making an attempt at a tackle.

I have a question... Are the commentators sent game film of only the plays where Auburn is running fast-tempo plays? There have been several games - with different commentators - and the color guy always goes on and on about how fast Auburn's tempo is. To me, it's only fast on a few drives. On the rest, the ball isn't snapped until there's less than 10 seconds left on the clock - a lot times it's less than 5.

Blogger michael said...

Oh no. You mean there are bammers in the future, Jet? What do I have to look forward to if you call that progress?!

I have to say that I've been thoroughly entertained by the games I've watched on TV since Thursday night. Can't say I got all the outcomes I wanted, but the games have been enjoyable:

Texas-Texas A&M
LSU-Arkansas
GT-UGA
Ky-UT
Missouri-Kansas
Colts-Texans
Falcons-Bucs

Hoping tonight's game is a prize winner, too.

Luv,

Early in the season it was pretty fast.

I think later in the season it's been slown down just to keep the D off the field as much as they can.

I think the offense had to adapt to help the D's lack of depth.

1:19 PM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

Gotcha. Thanks, WERK.

1:19 PM
Blogger michael said...

Luv - that makes me laugh too. And the offense clearly wasn't comfortable moving quickly on the last drive.

The announcers keep saying it because that is what Malzahn was known for at Tulsa. The offense is still quick to the line to keep the D from subbing, but they have audibled late in the play clock fairly consistently this year.

It is still very fast paced for the SEC, but nothing out of this world. I think Chiz has purposefully slowed it down against the better teams, also.

Stinky - I don't think I'll teach him to poop in a cooler, better to let him figure that out on his own. I do plan to teach him how to poop on someone's front doorstep. Oh the hilarity that will ensue.

Blogger Jet said...

As to the tempo ... if there were late substitutions by the offense, the defense was allowed to substitute as well. That came into a play a few times.

The bottom line is that we changed plays/or called plays once the defense had shown its hand at the line of scrimmage most of the time.

Ninety plays a game is doable when it's Furman on the other side. When it's UAT or Georgia or any SEC school for that matter, unless you are the dominant team, it's asking a lot.

1:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think if we had any depth on D that our offense would have been running a lot quicker all year long.

One thing that has been rough is watching this offense struggle late in games when they need to put points on the board. Those last drives vs Kentucky, UGA and Alabama were rough.

Lot's of what ifs out there today. Time to move on.

F'bombs breaking story on ESmith caused AU to lose. It shook the very foundation. Or was his story where KBurns and Chizik got into a HUGE argument on the bus after the LSU game. Or was it a racial thing going on at AU becasue KBurns was not playing QB.? All that hurt our chances. F.bomb has so much power over AU.

I think the Tigers go to the Music City Bowl and play an ACC team, which one, I am not sure.

1:30 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Just asking, but if UAT loses to FLA, will the excuse be they were looking forward to the national championship game?

Or will it be the fans fault again?

I just need to get ahead of the curve here.

1:32 PM
Blogger IV said...

It could be that UF had a shorter week to prepare.

I thought the racial thing was not hiring Turner Gill? Oh how soon the focus changes when the chosen one goes 5-7

Notre Dame finally got around to firing Charlie Weis. This isn't exactly a shocker. Now the interesting part will be who will Notre Dame go after?

1:38 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I haven't heard the Chiz/Burns argument after the LSU game story. What's with that?

1:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I would be very satisfied with the Music City bowl and an ACC opponent.

1:39 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Now ND can call back George O'Leary, right?

1:41 PM
Blogger michael said...

rk, I think Burns and Chizik were arguing about the Sopranos season finale after the LSU game. Chiz thinks Tony is dead, Kodi is convinced he is alive. It is a very sensitive subject.

Talk show host was trying to make something out of 'the stare' from Bynes to Todd during the LSU game and that Burns faced off with Chizik on the bus and told him TOdd needed to step aside, blah, blah, blah. I think Shane from Centerpoint is his source. And you know Shane was on the bus.

1:46 PM

michael is reporting that Trooper Taylor is being interviewed for the Notre Dame job RIGHT THIS SECOND!

I think the Notre Dame job is still good. Better than the Alabama job was a few years ago.

Stinky - I'd appreciate it if you'd live-blog the interview.

The AD just asked Trooper why he carried around a towel everywhere. Trooper got a far off stare and after a moment of contemplation he said, "The tears. All the tears." He looked down at his hands for a moment and then said, "OK, next question."

1:51 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Notre Dame will hire Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen so he can fufill his destiny as ...

BTW, I was in a Walgreens a few minutes ago and finally saw the most recent issue of SI. Jinx, anyone?

If only Ingram, McElroy, Arenas, Jones and Saban had all been on the cover together.

1:56 PM
Blogger michael said...

Now they are on a walking tour of Notre Dame's practice facilities. The AD dropped his pen, and Trooper yelled, "NO DROPS!" The AD responded, "What?!" Trooper then put him in a headlock and gave him a noogie.

1:58 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm reporting that Notre Dame will hire Sally May Sample of Thibodeaux, Louisiana as their new head coach, because according to investigative reporter Irwin M. Fletcher she "just loves the Fightin' Irish".

WERK - how does Mr. Fletcher feel about Tommy Lasorda?

The Trooper interview is over. When Trooper got to the "Play Like a Champion" sign, he tore it down, destroyed it, yelled "War Eagle" and ran away.

Mr. Fletcher isn't a big fan of Tommy Lasorda, in fact he has been quoted saying that he "hates" him.
