Your late update, 11/8
Hey everyone. Several players made their way to the Rane Room this evening to discuss football and other items of interest this evening.
Let's summarize.

Let's summarize.
- Auburn apparently will make a change at punt returner this weekend. Freshman Anthony Gulley, who was fired from the gig earlier this season, was fielding punts Sunday along with junior Demond Washington. That could be curtains for Philip Pierre-Louis, who had two negative returns and a fumble against Furman.
- WR Darvin Adams (right) grew up in Mississippi, but played high-school ball in Marietta, Ga. He garnered some recruiting interest from Georgia, but let's say it wasn't exactly reciprocated.
``I'm not too much of a Georgia fan. I really didn't like Georgia. I think every letter I got from Georgia, I don't think I even read it. I guess it was because being in Georgia, everybody was a Georgia fan. I like being an underdog." - Defensive coordinator Ted Roof said he played 31 guys on defense against Furman. That included some guys who, um, maybe weren't made to play defense.
``Some guys that were wide receivers, some guys that were scout team offensive tackles, offensive guards, jumped out there and got some reps for us. But what I saw is I saw us play very well as a first group, and then get the game where we need to get it." - Roof on how he coached guys who didn't play defense: ``We were doing some old-time country coaching."
- I sometimes throw out long-shot questions hoping for nuggets. I caught one Sunday night after asking tailback Ben Tate how he sells Auburn to recruits.
``It's easy to sell now. It's pretty easy to sell this year. I just be real with the guys. I let them know how things are going to be. Either they like it or they don't. I try to say the right things, but sometimes I don't know what that is. When you go to see Coach Yox, it's not going to be fun. I'm telling you that right now. You're going to work. If you want to be good and you want to work, that won't bother you." - You've seen Mario Fannin getting more carries these days after spending the first seven games as a receiver. He's willing to do what is asked of him, but it's clear that Fannin's career goals don't involve him lining up at tailback all the time.
``Being able to show that versatility, I've been told helps out in the long run. Being able to play both (positions) is great for me."

FSJ what happened to Pruett's BBQ? When I first moved into this area in Oct 1983 it was some really good BBQ and stayed that way for some time, can't remember when it got where it is today. I still eat there some but it is way off.
Counting on the return of Norm to help us improve our page flipping.
After further review....I think it was indeed a pick...Slingblade Miles should be livid.
Pick
I set it up just fine, Jet, and RK came through. It's not our faults if peeps don't get on board.
I don't know, did Miles keep both fingers in?
Otherwise, might not be a pick.
digger,
I can explain it easily.
Stan Pruett and his wife divorced. Stan sold out to her and move to New Orleans.
She remarried and she and her now ex hubby about ran it into the ground. Fortunately she sold the place back to Stan a few months ago.
They are working on it..and it is slowly getting better but it takes time I guess.
Gadsden has terrible BBQ. Liz's in East Gadsden is good but its a shack.....And the place on Meighan over where BBQ Bob's was is pretty good although I usually get their lunch special which typically isn't BBQ. The guy that owns it is a heckuva nice guy though. I talked to him for a good long while at First Friday while waiting on Big Al.
Just wanted to poke my head in to say War Damn!
Apparently Saban is giving one of his trademark PC's right now...
The people on TI are going nuts.
Hey Boknowsbo
RK- Cole Cubelic....tool, need I say more.
Doesn't matter to me which channel we are on, as long as it is HD. The only one that isn't HD on DTV is ESPNU.
I haven't listened to the audio on any game this season; just turn on the radio and listen to our homers. Who wants objectivity when watching an AU game? Not me, I want announcers that will agree with all of my preconceived ideas, and our guys never disappoint.
If you can get the game on internet radio, and it is 20 seconds behind, just use your tivo or dvr to delay the tv broadcast by 20 seconds and you can synchronize them perfectly.
Jox was about 2 seconds behind the ppv broadcast Sat, but that wasn't really a problem.
No way would I listen to the espn morons.
Coosa,
Another thing that is weird is watching a ball game in two different rooms with one being HD and the other not...
At least on DirecTV the game non HD game is about five seconds ahead of the HD one.
I feel very lurky today. I have been enjoying the BBQ conversation, though.
Chocolate Gravy? Tell us how!
On Comcast (here, at least), the HD signal is about 20 seconds AHEAD of the non-HD.
Nick Saban commenting on the SEC officials- "I mean, can somebody stand up and fight for these guys, and what they do for the game?"
Robin Hood Saban- The Defender of the Little Man.
I guess if you are getting the calls its easy to stand up for them.
Hey when the big calls are going your way why not stand up for the Zebra's.
FSJ. I knew about the divorce but I thought she kept Betty's BBQ in Anniston and he kept Pruett's here in Gadsden. The one in Anniston was never as good as the one here.
Eddie, exactly.
I didn't know about that difference, FSJ. Everything is weird now with timing; some radio stations like JOX must get their feed off the sat., while others do not. At the Ole Miss game, I was wearing my little headset radio and the station was live with the action.
Anytime there is a shadow of doubt about a call, I'm gonna be screaming that we wuz robbed. Stan always sees things my way. That's what I want from an analyst on an AU game.
I'll read Jay's live blogging at halftime when I want an objective view; live, I want to be surrounded by people who see the world thru orange and blue glasses.
Have any of you ever read the random questions they give on the profile page? I always think of Michael. Here's a perfect example...how do you think he'd respond to this:
You've broken up with your old band and are about to release your first solo album. Please write the liner notes:
Duck Fat vs EVOO. Discuss.
Luv,
Sounds like that question belongs to Steven Tyler today as Joe Perry is saying Tyler has quit Aerosmith.
People of the HABOTN, I have returned. Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Hopefully, one day soon, my vision will return. Since surgery two weeks ago, I still have no useful vision in my left eye and given the way my right eye works it's really only good for distance viewing. Today is the first day since surgery I've been allowed to read anything and from what I've discovered the only thing I can read is on the PC and that's only after I altered the global settings to make all fonts pretty large. Not being able to read, I've been HABOTN deprived and the only AU news I've had over the last couple of weeks came from the morning show on 740 or watching the AU vs UM game.
So. What have I missed?
digger,
I think Betty's was Stan's mom's place...
Stan moved to New Orleans after his divorce for a while.
One of his cooks opened a Pruett's in Cartersville Georgia that eventually went out of business. Bad location....
Welcome back Norm..
Hope you are doing well.
What on earth, Norm? You get in a barfight with Brandon Spikes?
Here's to a speedy recovery.
NORM!!!
I have a different take on the radio broadcasts. I want the play by play guy to be enthusiastic, but give me the pertinent information I need (time, down/distance, score -- try them, Eli, they're wonderful).
I want the color commentator to tell me the truth -- translated, don't whine about every call, Stan.
That's why Jim Fyffe and Charlie Trotman were perfect ... the gold standard.
FSJ I ate at the Pruett's in C-ville twice and it was not good
(also never made the connection with Gadsden until now). We now have Scott's walkup BBQ, which is great, but when Pruett's opened, we were starving for good BBQ. Pruett's location was wierd, but folks around here will drive if it is good enough.
Folks around here actually drive 40 min. into a backwoods area near Rockmart to eat at "Pizza Farm". It's a scary version of Cracker Barrel that is 10 miles out on a county road all by itself.
Welcome back Norm!!!!
You've missed the lows and highs of Habotn since your departure. We are back to even kilt right now!
Norm ...hang in there, we're praying.
I'm with Jet on the announcers. That's twice today I've agreed with Jet ....enuff already.
Hoopie- Pizza Farm....sounds like a good saturday afternoon roadtrip for me. I take they specialize in Pizza.
NORM!!
Beat Georgia!!
Is it raining in Montgomery yet?
Still supposed to be football weather this weekend in Athens?
Peter- Sunny and 68 as a high that day according to weather.com right now.
weather.com says high of 67, mostly sunny. only 10% chance of rain. nice.
Football weather, indeed. Means around 50 at kickoff, right? Short sleeves and bourbon should work.
Let's see, F-bomb called out the SEC last week and the previous week about the officials and this week he says it was a good game of officiating. BTW, take a look at this link below about the bama/LSU game:
How much does it cost to get the calls going your way?
Peter- You should be good to go.
sorry PF, Eddie beat me.
LOL..
Cry corndogs..cry
Scottie- Not as bad as Ooh-La did :)
I've hated the SEC refs since the 1994 Iron Bowl. Everyone else is just late catching up with me.
true Eddie. very true. ;)
FSJ- Look, I didn't see a single play of the game, but I did listen to your radio crew. Eli Gold was shocked that it was not ruled an interception. He kept telling the bama faithful that he thought it was a turnover. Anyways, with that said, i'm sorry, too much funny business going on this year in the SEC and officiating. It certainly seems that some teams get the calls and some teams get penalized unfairly for whatever reason. You have to at least admit that it looks that way. I've always said the SEC Refs are among the worst in the nation, but this is getting ridiculous IMO.
maybe the good teams are just more disciplined.
It was an INT. The call was blown.
But let's get our hating priorities straight this week and focus on UGA.
Did we practice last night?
Bro- They did practice last night. Are you not focused on Georgia? :)
Like I said the night of the game..
I think the play was going to stand no matter what they called.
If they had ruled it an interception it would have stood.
But there were missed calls on both sides. We had a catch that wasn't able to be reviewed in the first half because the "replay booth" was down...
The DB that whined about the interception got the benefit of the doubt on a call that could have been interference when Julio had him beat deep..
Also one thing the conspiracy theorists have not explained to me is this..If the refs wanted Alabama to win..why not call the 15 yard roughing the kicker penalty in the fourth quarter instead of the running into the kicker one.. That way Alabama doesn't have to go for it on fourth down.
I've seen less be called for the 15 yarder.
I have a friend who is an official in another conference. He says it is well known in reffing circles that the SEC officials are the worst in college football. He says not only do they blow calls, they are always out of position.
You know I am. I want them to fear the index finger.
Of course a bammer would see it that way. :-)
Oh and btw, he said all of this before all the terrible officiating in the SEC.
One other thing..
On our safety possession..the LSU guy batted the ball toward the goal line from the three..yet we started on the one foot line..
Also we had a punt go out of bounds inside the five. The officials were out of bounds and an official on the other side of the field ruled it a touchback.
Stuff went against both teams. Personally I hope it was an interception..Makes it hurt that much worse for LSU.
sorry..officials were out of position.
FSJ, you realize none of that matters, right. The officials cheated LSU out of a chance to win by ruling that interception incomplete.
How do you figure none of it matters Peter?
Unless you are Nostradamus how would you know?
On the refs, I agree. UA is good enough to win without the bad calls. All they do is taint the wins in the eyes of those that are not their fans. However, if it is not your team that is getitng jobbed, you really do not care. You would probably say 'quite whining, you lost, blah, blah, blah.' I think AU fans would be the same way if they were going AU's way. with that being said, the game is over so everyone moves on.
Oh boy, I get to watch my hometown team take a beating from Bama on Nov. 21 on the SEC Network game.
Fear the Mocs, FSJ, fear them! You can't stop B.J. Coleman. You can't even hope to contain him.
FSJ- I prefaced it by saying I didn't see the game and there probably were calls missed each way, and thats football. Now, there is no excuse for the refs to not overturn that play in my mind from what i've seen on video. The SEC Refs just suck and I said it could be coincidence that bama / florida are getting the calls (mainly florida), but it just makes you go huh and scratch your head? The big money deal with ESPN and CBS now in theory could force more pressure to do bad things, but then again, I just say the refs suck and the SEC should fire all of them and go grab conference USA refs. That would be an immediate upgrade over what we have had in the past and currently.
I'm still wondering what the replay official saw to take the interception away from Ole Miss.
LOL..E-Bro..
I hope we have a similar game against them that Auburn had this past weekend.
Agreed Jet.
Jet- Just for you...It's Ok to Hate Doyle Jackson
So..on to a different topic..
Charlie Weiss....Toast or not?
I say toast.
FSJ-I can defend the rulings as part of the game and both sides had calls against them. But when UA fans say 'they would not have scored anyway', are they Nostradamus?
I will always disagree with folks that say if the call goes this way, or team would of done this. WRONG. WE (all of us) have no clue what our team would have done. Each play changes the situation, yo unever know what would happen if the calls go the other way.
True...
But another thing that has failed to be mentioned is that after the "incomplete" pass...LSU still had a chance to stop us with no points...
And didn't.
They had 9 yards offense in the fourth quarter. You never know..but the odds were against them.
WTC- Agreed. I just find it interesting what is going on the SEC, not just bama game, but in general. I don't understand how you can call 12 penalties on one team and none on the other. Makes no sense whatsoever.
FSJ is a blinded bammer!
Good point, wtc. I remember us shutting down UT for pretty much the entire game earlier this year and all of the sudden their offense caught fire in the 4th quarter.
What's done is done, though. We can put to rest this stuff about a conspiracy theory for good on Nov. 27...
FSJ- Toast, but who do they go after?...If it's me, i'd go after Harbaugh at Stanford.
I'm out till maybe the evening. Keep it real!
Guys, I have Valium for all of you. Please take it.
HATE GEORGIA!!!!!!! BEAT THE LEGHUMPERS!!!!!!!
Do your community service and have a dog neutered.
Notre Dame will hire Brian Kelly if they fire Weiss.
I don't know that we "shut down" Tennessee as much as their receivers were getting hit in the head with passes or dropping the ones they saw coming or Cropmton was throwing it to who knows who and stuff like that. A lot of horrible execution by Tennessee until late in that game.
Eddie..
I agree about Harbaugh but aren't there some hard feelings between him and UM?
don't be holding out on good Valium!
And whatever magic appeared for Crompton in the fourth quarter....they need to bottle and sell.
FJ-Is anyone even a little concerned over a let down against MSU?
Michael, same difference. We can rephrase everything and say that Bama wasn't shutting down LSU in the 4th quarter. LSU just wasn't executing that well.
How's that work for you? ;)
Shesaid,
Yes, please.
Or we could just say that both Jefferson and Scott were no longer in the game.
What's the early spread on Bama-State?
I think Bama wins that game even if that is ruled a TD. But that doesn't excuse a blown call by the replay booth, that was an interception. I have yet to see one unbiased person say otherwise.
And FSJ, I don't think Weiss is a toast for breakfast kinda guy. I bet he eats 3 servings of sausage, 2 servings of bacon, and 4 servings of canadien bacon with gravy all over all of it.
after two broken iPhones I have just made the switch to a BlackBerry Bold, sad but exciting day
I say LSU got jobbed. Bama cheated.
My hate cannot be blinded by the reasonable opinions on this blog.
wtc,
I'm concerned about that..and I'm concerned about being in Starkville. Weird stuff happens there. They always play us tough over there.
shesaid..can I have two?
UT did do some odd things, but AU did have 11 guys on the field. If they didn't, I bet UT completes most of those passes. (Though at the time Crompton may have thrown a few incomplete with no one out there). We tend to thing becasue things happen one way they will continue. They don't
I rememeber MVU beating the snot out of AU and then the coach decides he needs to throw the ball ALOT to win. He does that and they lose.
You never know what happens.
14 I think E-Bro
I'll take bama and some cheating -14. What, you say? There will be no cheating. MS and the points, then.
If I were the Notre Dame, I'd make two calls -- to Gainesville and Tuscaloosa. If I were completely rejected, I'd go get Brian Kelly and swear he was my first choice all along.
wtc,
I'll never understand why the WVU coach put the game in his QB's hands.
How many carried did Devine get in the 2nd half?
Amazing.
Bill Stewart is Les Miles' father.
Jet:
That's not a bad plan. I bet the first call goes to Gainesville.
Les Miles' father...LOL...
I apologize for my lack of typing skills. I get on HABOTN and revert to fourth grade.
They need to call Steve Sarkisian first and last.
What, you've never killed a thread with first year head coach from the Pac-10?
I kinda think about the Notre Dame job like this..
You don't need someone that will be in OJT...
You need a tough SOB that is a proven winner at the highest levels of college football.
Only a few people fit that criteria.
I wonder if Sarkisian's honeymoon is over? He was taking over a mess, so I'm sure he'll do a good job there in time, but I bet it's actually kind of deflating to look back on that USC win now and see where they've gone this season.
I haven't paid attention to them since the USC win..
I assume they've bottomed out?
FSJ...Bob Davie, Ty Willingham and Charlie Weiss don't fit that criteria?
About like Mike Dubose, Mike Price, & Mike Shula.
The similarities are stunning.
I would lover if Meyer or Saban were to go there. I could actually see Meyer going (thought I doubt it) I think there is no way Saban goes.
I think Washington has won one game since USC, and even it was sort of fluky with a late pick 6 or something to beat Arizona, who is actually decent I guess.
But yeah, they're 3-6.
I guess Bama will stay away from guys with the first name Mike from now on.
They damn sure better stay away from me.
A lot of L's there, E-Bro, but they've played a bunch of close games (4 of 6 loses have been a possession or less), which is a helluva a lot better than the last couple of years.
If he can recruit a couple of decent classes, that team will be solid. Great facilities, great fans, great coaching. No reason they shouldn't compete in that conference by year 3 of his reign.
Hey..for enough money I'd coach at Auburn.
Peter,
I'd like to go to a game at UW's stadium..
Looks like a great place.

Good thread today. ENjoyed participating. Time to finish work and head to the gym (err, my next appointment)
I would love the Alabama coaching job. I would make I had a big buy out. Then I would lose every game I could, and let them give me 5 million to leave at the end of the season.
Let's try again... Kelly's resume:
13 seasons at Grand Valley State (Mich.) -- one .500 season, 6 conference titles, 2 Division II titles.
3 seasons at Central Michigan -- one losing season, one conference title.
3rd season at Cincinnati -- one Big East title, one win away from 3rd 10 win season.
WHy not Turner Gill? Let's start that stuff again. Call Fbomb. Call Longshore. Get going. Gill for the ND job, or if , iff, if, Saban took it, let's see those LOSERS push for Gill to be the coach.
Peter, definitely agree. They're a sleeping giant in that conference. I watched that USC game earlier this year and the camera was shaking the whole game because the place was going nuts.
Sarkisian will do fine, I'm sure. He just inherited such a mess that it won't happen quickly. Whatever happens the rest of the season (they will beat WSU), I imagine everybody's excited about the future there.
wtc,
We already had our time with a similar story..
Shula/Croom.
FSJ...
Did Bama's greatest basketball ever (Latrell Sprewell?) come out and make a fuss about Croom not getting hired.
The Croom/Shula choice.. talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't.
No E-Bro...
But Jesse Jackson sent letters to the SEC and the UA President.
I personally thought Croom should have been hired...but like michael said..both were poor HC's.
We could have been bold though at the time and went after someone named Urban Meyer.
Of course, Mal is rarely bold.
In the Shula/Croom decision, Mal should have done what he wanted to do -- hire Richard Williamson as the coach, knowing it would be a 1-2 year situation.
That's true Jet.
And truth be told Williamson was the best coach of the three.
Anybody see Tommy West's presser after being fired?
Undoubtedly, FSJ.
I didn't see it E-Bro..but the folks on TI said it was something...
Watch the video in the top, left hand corner to see Tommy West tell how it is with Memphis football.
It was interesting. No doubt.
Maybe that will discourage TT from going to Memphis
Well, Tommy West is right.
The answer for Memphis, UAB, Rice, San Jose State, Tulane, half the Sun Belt and half the WAC is to heed Tommy West's advice and do away with it, or slide down to FCS.
Too many programs are in FBS for the financial incentives of bowls and NCAA tournaments, when they have no business being there.
For a school like Memphis, the money on football would almost be better spent on adding a few low cost sports, and hanging their hats on hoops like the Marquettes, Villanovas and Georgetowns of the world.
TennStud(Roy Adams) said on the UT board that a "usually connected" Memphis booster said the new Memphis coach would be one of the Bowdens.
That would be an interesting choice, if true.
People see the green and lose the capacity for rational thought.
Been fun hotties. Time to run. WDE!
Beat Georgia!!
A little hush money under the table could have avoided that press conference.
Going back about 3 hours - Jet, how can you insinuate that Stan doesn't tell the truth? If its a close call, it ought to go for Auburn. The fact that it doesn't is proof of the conspiracy - its us against the world. I see it, Stan sees it, how can you be so blind?
We will have to beat bammer by at least 4 tds in order to have a chance to win the game by one point. Its going to take some kind of perfect play on the last play of the game for us to win; something that they can't possibly find a reason to throw a flag. Maybe a fake FG while bammer is running Maximum Block. Wonder if Crowfoot can pass?
Guess the puppets are out in force keeping everyone away.
Can't drink the Coosa-Aid on Stan. Sorry. We've had a few bad calls against this year, but most of the penalties, we've earned.
I won't let these %$#@ Dog puppets prevent us from doing what we do.
Shoot the Dog Puppets!
Beat UGA.
Kill all the puppets... Let Harrison sort em out.
Rod + Stan = sucktacular
Yeah...what he said.

Damn double posts.
PF - nope; I went to a lot of games in Athens when I was growing up. After taking MrsTHT to a game there soon after we were married (AU won, of course), she said we weren't going back there. The UGA fans were far too rude/vulgar. I'm sure your fiancee and in-laws weren't there.
A Bowden at Memphis?
Oh my.
False start on J-Z ... 5-yard penalty from the previous spot ... remains 1st down.
I've got a board meeting to attend ... you kids have fun ... check on ya later ... BEAT THE DOGS.
