Your late update, 11/8

Hey everyone. Several players made their way to the Rane Room this evening to discuss football and other items of interest this evening.

Let's summarize.

  • Auburn apparently will make a change at punt returner this weekend. Freshman Anthony Gulley, who was fired from the gig earlier this season, was fielding punts Sunday along with junior Demond Washington. That could be curtains for Philip Pierre-Louis, who had two negative returns and a fumble against Furman.

  • WR Darvin Adams (right) grew up in Mississippi, but played high-school ball in Marietta, Ga. He garnered some recruiting interest from Georgia, but let's say it wasn't exactly reciprocated.

``I'm not too much of a Georgia fan. I really didn't like Georgia. I think every letter I got from Georgia, I don't think I even read it. I guess it was because being in Georgia, everybody was a Georgia fan. I like being an underdog."

  • Defensive coordinator Ted Roof said he played 31 guys on defense against Furman. That included some guys who, um, maybe weren't made to play defense.

``Some guys that were wide receivers, some guys that were scout team offensive tackles, offensive guards, jumped out there and got some reps for us. But what I saw is I saw us play very well as a first group, and then get the game where we need to get it."

  • Roof on how he coached guys who didn't play defense: ``We were doing some old-time country coaching."

  • I sometimes throw out long-shot questions hoping for nuggets. I caught one Sunday night after asking tailback Ben Tate how he sells Auburn to recruits.

``It's easy to sell now. It's pretty easy to sell this year. I just be real with the guys. I let them know how things are going to be. Either they like it or they don't. I try to say the right things, but sometimes I don't know what that is. When you go to see Coach Yox, it's not going to be fun. I'm telling you that right now. You're going to work. If you want to be good and you want to work, that won't bother you."

  • You've seen Mario Fannin getting more carries these days after spending the first seven games as a receiver. He's willing to do what is asked of him, but it's clear that Fannin's career goals don't involve him lining up at tailback all the time.

``Being able to show that versatility, I've been told helps out in the long run. Being able to play both (positions) is great for me."

FSJ what happened to Pruett's BBQ? When I first moved into this area in Oct 1983 it was some really good BBQ and stayed that way for some time, can't remember when it got where it is today. I still eat there some but it is way off.

digger,

I can explain it easily.

Stan Pruett and his wife divorced. Stan sold out to her and move to New Orleans.

She remarried and she and her now ex hubby about ran it into the ground. Fortunately she sold the place back to Stan a few months ago.

They are working on it..and it is slowly getting better but it takes time I guess.

Gadsden has terrible BBQ. Liz's in East Gadsden is good but its a shack.....And the place on Meighan over where BBQ Bob's was is pretty good although I usually get their lunch special which typically isn't BBQ. The guy that owns it is a heckuva nice guy though. I talked to him for a good long while at First Friday while waiting on Big Al.

Doesn't matter to me which channel we are on, as long as it is HD. The only one that isn't HD on DTV is ESPNU.

I haven't listened to the audio on any game this season; just turn on the radio and listen to our homers. Who wants objectivity when watching an AU game? Not me, I want announcers that will agree with all of my preconceived ideas, and our guys never disappoint.

If you can get the game on internet radio, and it is 20 seconds behind, just use your tivo or dvr to delay the tv broadcast by 20 seconds and you can synchronize them perfectly.

Jox was about 2 seconds behind the ppv broadcast Sat, but that wasn't really a problem.

No way would I listen to the espn morons.

12:28 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Coosa,

Another thing that is weird is watching a ball game in two different rooms with one being HD and the other not...

At least on DirecTV the game non HD game is about five seconds ahead of the HD one.

FSJ. I knew about the divorce but I thought she kept Betty's BBQ in Anniston and he kept Pruett's here in Gadsden. The one in Anniston was never as good as the one here.

Blogger LuvAU41 said...

Eddie, exactly.

1:14 PM
Blogger coosa said...

I didn't know about that difference, FSJ. Everything is weird now with timing; some radio stations like JOX must get their feed off the sat., while others do not. At the Ole Miss game, I was wearing my little headset radio and the station was live with the action.

Anytime there is a shadow of doubt about a call, I'm gonna be screaming that we wuz robbed. Stan always sees things my way. That's what I want from an analyst on an AU game.

I'll read Jay's live blogging at halftime when I want an objective view; live, I want to be surrounded by people who see the world thru orange and blue glasses.

People of the HABOTN, I have returned. Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Hopefully, one day soon, my vision will return. Since surgery two weeks ago, I still have no useful vision in my left eye and given the way my right eye works it's really only good for distance viewing. Today is the first day since surgery I've been allowed to read anything and from what I've discovered the only thing I can read is on the PC and that's only after I altered the global settings to make all fonts pretty large. Not being able to read, I've been HABOTN deprived and the only AU news I've had over the last couple of weeks came from the morning show on 740 or watching the AU vs UM game.

So. What have I missed?

I want the color commentator to tell me the truth -- translated, don't whine about every call, Stan.

That's why Jim Fyffe and Charlie Trotman were perfect ... the gold standard.

FSJ I ate at the Pruett's in C-ville twice and it was not good
(also never made the connection with Gadsden until now). We now have Scott's walkup BBQ, which is great, but when Pruett's opened, we were starving for good BBQ. Pruett's location was wierd, but folks around here will drive if it is good enough.

Folks around here actually drive 40 min. into a backwoods area near Rockmart to eat at "Pizza Farm". It's a scary version of Cracker Barrel that is 10 miles out on a county road all by itself.

true Eddie. very true. ;)

2:31 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- Look, I didn't see a single play of the game, but I did listen to your radio crew. Eli Gold was shocked that it was not ruled an interception. He kept telling the bama faithful that he thought it was a turnover. Anyways, with that said, i'm sorry, too much funny business going on this year in the SEC and officiating. It certainly seems that some teams get the calls and some teams get penalized unfairly for whatever reason. You have to at least admit that it looks that way. I've always said the SEC Refs are among the worst in the nation, but this is getting ridiculous IMO.

2:32 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

maybe the good teams are just more disciplined.

2:35 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

It was an INT. The call was blown.
But let's get our hating priorities straight this week and focus on UGA.

Did we practice last night?

2:37 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Bro- They did practice last night. Are you not focused on Georgia? :)

2:38 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Like I said the night of the game..

I think the play was going to stand no matter what they called.

If they had ruled it an interception it would have stood.

But there were missed calls on both sides. We had a catch that wasn't able to be reviewed in the first half because the "replay booth" was down...

The DB that whined about the interception got the benefit of the doubt on a call that could have been interference when Julio had him beat deep..

Also one thing the conspiracy theorists have not explained to me is this..If the refs wanted Alabama to win..why not call the 15 yard roughing the kicker penalty in the fourth quarter instead of the running into the kicker one.. That way Alabama doesn't have to go for it on fourth down.

I've seen less be called for the 15 yarder.

2:40 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I have a friend who is an official in another conference. He says it is well known in reffing circles that the SEC officials are the worst in college football. He says not only do they blow calls, they are always out of position.

2:41 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

You know I am. I want them to fear the index finger.

2:41 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Of course a bammer would see it that way. :-)

2:42 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Oh and btw, he said all of this before all the terrible officiating in the SEC.

2:42 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

One other thing..

On our safety possession..the LSU guy batted the ball toward the goal line from the three..yet we started on the one foot line..

Also we had a punt go out of bounds inside the five. The officials were out of bounds and an official on the other side of the field ruled it a touchback.

Stuff went against both teams. Personally I hope it was an interception..Makes it hurt that much worse for LSU.

2:43 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

sorry..officials were out of position.

2:44 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

FSJ, you realize none of that matters, right. The officials cheated LSU out of a chance to win by ruling that interception incomplete.

2:45 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

How do you figure none of it matters Peter?

Unless you are Nostradamus how would you know?

2:47 PM
Blogger wtc said...

On the refs, I agree. UA is good enough to win without the bad calls. All they do is taint the wins in the eyes of those that are not their fans. However, if it is not your team that is getitng jobbed, you really do not care. You would probably say 'quite whining, you lost, blah, blah, blah.' I think AU fans would be the same way if they were going AU's way. with that being said, the game is over so everyone moves on.

2:48 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Oh boy, I get to watch my hometown team take a beating from Bama on Nov. 21 on the SEC Network game.

Fear the Mocs, FSJ, fear them! You can't stop B.J. Coleman. You can't even hope to contain him.

2:49 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- I prefaced it by saying I didn't see the game and there probably were calls missed each way, and thats football. Now, there is no excuse for the refs to not overturn that play in my mind from what i've seen on video. The SEC Refs just suck and I said it could be coincidence that bama / florida are getting the calls (mainly florida), but it just makes you go huh and scratch your head? The big money deal with ESPN and CBS now in theory could force more pressure to do bad things, but then again, I just say the refs suck and the SEC should fire all of them and go grab conference USA refs. That would be an immediate upgrade over what we have had in the past and currently.

I say toast.

2:53 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ-I can defend the rulings as part of the game and both sides had calls against them. But when UA fans say 'they would not have scored anyway', are they Nostradamus?
I will always disagree with folks that say if the call goes this way, or team would of done this. WRONG. WE (all of us) have no clue what our team would have done. Each play changes the situation, yo unever know what would happen if the calls go the other way.

2:53 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

True...

But another thing that has failed to be mentioned is that after the "incomplete" pass...LSU still had a chance to stop us with no points...

And didn't.

They had 9 yards offense in the fourth quarter. You never know..but the odds were against them.

2:55 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

WTC- Agreed. I just find it interesting what is going on the SEC, not just bama game, but in general. I don't understand how you can call 12 penalties on one team and none on the other. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Watch the video in the top, left hand corner to see Tommy West tell how it is with Memphis football.

It was interesting. No doubt.

Maybe that will discourage TT from going to Memphis

Well, Tommy West is right.

The answer for Memphis, UAB, Rice, San Jose State, Tulane, half the Sun Belt and half the WAC is to heed Tommy West's advice and do away with it, or slide down to FCS.

Too many programs are in FBS for the financial incentives of bowls and NCAA tournaments, when they have no business being there.

For a school like Memphis, the money on football would almost be better spent on adding a few low cost sports, and hanging their hats on hoops like the Marquettes, Villanovas and Georgetowns of the world.

TennStud(Roy Adams) said on the UT board that a "usually connected" Memphis booster said the new Memphis coach would be one of the Bowdens.

That would be an interesting choice, if true.

A little hush money under the table could have avoided that press conference.

Going back about 3 hours - Jet, how can you insinuate that Stan doesn't tell the truth? If its a close call, it ought to go for Auburn. The fact that it doesn't is proof of the conspiracy - its us against the world. I see it, Stan sees it, how can you be so blind?

We will have to beat bammer by at least 4 tds in order to have a chance to win the game by one point. Its going to take some kind of perfect play on the last play of the game for us to win; something that they can't possibly find a reason to throw a flag. Maybe a fake FG while bammer is running Maximum Block. Wonder if Crowfoot can pass?

Can't drink the Coosa-Aid on Stan. Sorry. We've had a few bad calls against this year, but most of the penalties, we've earned.

I won't let these %$#@ Dog puppets prevent us from doing what we do.

PF - nope; I went to a lot of games in Athens when I was growing up. After taking MrsTHT to a game there soon after we were married (AU won, of course), she said we weren't going back there. The UGA fans were far too rude/vulgar. I'm sure your fiancee and in-laws weren't there.
