Men's hoops: Auburn wins, 68-67

Hey everyone. We are awaiting tip-off to the massive Auburn/Virginia game.

It is being televised on Comcast Sports. Check your local listings.

**I left my camera upstairs. I'll post a real pic at halftime.**

  • FINAL
    Auburn wins, 68-67.
Knox tips in an errant shot from Reed with :01 second remaining. It was nice.

  • FOURTH TO @ 2:59
Auburn leads, 66-62. Auburn moved ahead by eight points with 4:20 remaining and, well, I thought that was enough. Then Virginia got a tip-in (laxy box-out by Auburn) and a steal-and-bucket. Now it's a four-point game and the Cavaliers have the ball. This is when I'd expect a young team like Auburn to make mental errors. They can't afford any more.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:45, 2nd
Auburn leads, 58-55. Both teams appear to have gone on their second-half runs, but Auburn's is better. Consecutive tip slams -- one from Earnest Ross and one from Kenny Gabriel -- energized the situation. Virginia's offense is two-dimensional right now. One option is point guard Jontel Evans beating Reed off the dribble. The second is firing away from three-point range. That combination probably won't win this game.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:50, 2nd half
Tied at 46. I like the way Brendon Knox is playing. He's trying to be assertive. Auburn's defense has been better this half. Landesburg had 17 in the first half. He has one point in the second half so far. Auburn is so small -- they have to remind themselves to rebound all the time. Nothing comes easily.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:51, 2nd half
Auburn leads, 42-40. Auburn came out with more enthusiasm, spurred on by Reed. He was really pushing the tempo. Hargrove finished a few breaks nicely. Virginia still is settling for the three-point shots. Not sure why they don't drive more -- this Landesburg kid, a small forward, is really good.

  • HALFTIME
Virginia leads, 34-32. Auburn made a really nice push there. Defensive effort was up. The Tigers missed a ton of free throws, but they hit a pair of threes. The last one came from Sullivan's hands as the buzzer sounded.

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:04
Virginia leads, 31-23. Auburn is taking a little more care on the offensive end, but it's not yielding many points. Virginia seems content to fire away from the perimeter. They're hitting a few more form out there. That's the difference right now.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:43
Virginia leads, 25-16. The Cavaliers are on a bit of a run now. Auburn is not taking good shots. Virginia's looks are better. They also got a nice bucket in transition after a weak turnover involving Sullivan. Auburn doesn't have much want-to as Lee Ziemba would say.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:42
Virginia leads, 15-13. I know this will surprise you, but Auburn seems impatient on the offensive end. Not getting good shots. Virginia is in the same boat, mostly because Auburn's defense is pretty good, but they've hit a couple more buckets. They're also rebounding more aggressively.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:25
Virginia leads, 12-11. Teams still messy in terms of strategy. No rhythm yet.

  • AUBURN'S LINEUP
PG -- "Speed" Reed of Houston
SG -- Frankie Sullivan of Uniontown, Ala.
"SF" -- Tay Waller of rural Georgia
"PF" -- Lucas Hargrove of South Carolina
C -- Johnnie Lett of Mobile, Ala.

  • PREGAME
Thrilling atmosphere. There's at least 750 people here.

According to this week's NCAA statistics, Ingram faced six of the top 28 defenses in the country (No. 4 Florida, No. 14 Virginia Tech, No. 15 South Carolina, No. 16 Tennessee, No. 24 Ole Miss and No. 28 LSU). And in those six games, Ingram rushed for 924 yards, averaging 154 yards per game and scoring seven touchdowns.

Not that any of it matters...

He didn't exactly light up UT. 99 yards, 0 TD, a fumble.

His biggest game is probably the USC game where he got 224 yards or something crazy like that.

Florida needs an asterisk next to theirs. Losing the BCSCG MVP didn't help and they looked like a completely different unit.

Auburn faced 11 of the top 120 defenses in the country. That's almost 10% of all defenses available.

If you want Ingram to win the award, we may as well rewrite the criteria for it. Let's make the criteria "the most publicized player on the best team". Ingram isn't even the mist outstanding player on his own team... That designation would go to Rolando McClain (who, if reports are correct, rightfully won the Butkus award).

10:08 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I see in last nights post that a couple people mentioned something that also bothered me.
All-SEC kickers. No way should it have been Tiffin!
Walsh maybe
But with Byrums Stats he should have been first or second team.
When you go 3-5 in the SEC you don't expect many All-SEC players.
Like I said earlier some times they don't listen when Stats speak.

You know, I am more OK with bama winning the NC than Ingram winning the Heisman. After all, bama already does have 4 legitimate national titles, but zero Heisman winners. That is a bit of a black eye for them.

I still believe that the Nutt/ KU thing is being orchestrated by Sexton. The OM AD didn't bite on the rumored interest, so Sexton has to carry the farce a little further to put a scare into the OM AD.

However, Nutt is kind of a Big12 guy, having played at Okey St. Who knows. But, it is a but strange.

10:19 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ole Miss wants to be an upper level SEC school and 8-4 each year is Nutt's average and that's not upper level. Nutt might know he needs to get to a place where the expectations aren't unreal.

Supposedly there are going to be more than two UA defensive coaches that will receive offers at other schools.

The two widely rumored ones are Smart at UGA, Sal at FSU..

The third possibility is interesting from what I have read.

10:36 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Morning all. I think (I hate to say this) Ingram is a Great back. The only problem though is that most people don't believe he is even the best player on the team. They also believe that Richardson plus some other backs from other teams would have put up the same numbers if not better. On the other hand Gerhert was his team and Suh was his team and McCoy was his team. So if you take away Ingram Bama is still more than likely #1, but not so much for those other teams.

10:37 AM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

He has Saban, doesn't have any of the other two. He does have Kiffin though.

10:41 AM

What is the 3rd possibility, FSJ?

I had heard about Sal and Kirby. Those are the only 2 defensive coaches I had heard about.
Is the 3rd another defensive coach, or McElwain? I had heard grumblings that he was shopping, but not sure if it's true or not.

FSJ-Hubbard was a late bloomer this year. Surprised UA took him at this point. I think he would be on the board for awhile. Rivals either not rated him 'cause he such alate bloomer or he jus tisn't that good yet. Even though he got several offers late this year. Probabaly will get rated by Rivals later on. I know nothing else about him except 6'7, 227 weakseide DE. Tall and thin.

11:02 AM

I don't think Chizik fired him. I though Jacobs fired everyone then asked him and Lolley to stay on. Chizik was hired and gave him a position then he went to the dark side. That's how I understand it but I could be wrong.

In fact I think that Jay wrote back then that Willis was one of the few not cleaning out his office on the day Tubs resigned...

11:04 AM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ=Probabaly a project for UA.
For fans it seems early, but for coaches that do it all year round, you have to start looking at taking a gamble on someone becasue youy are realizing you are not getting everyone on your board. Almost like closing time at the local watering hole. If you are there late, you better not get the last one there.

11:07 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think all the coaches were fired, i.e. given notice, the day tubs resigned, but effective end of December. I think the ones that knew they wouldn't be retained just up and left (with AU's blessing since they wouldn't be of any use), while the ones hoping to be retained stayed at work. So no, Chizik didn't fire Willis. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Don't know if there's any truth in it.

11:08 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I think there had to be a miscommunication somewhere with Willis. The guy was the head GA under Chiz back in 2002. There was already a relationship there.

So it goes. I'll never be happy about it, but Auburn is fine and so is James Willis I guess.

11:10 AM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

The story how I remember it is Willis was fired with Tubbs but was immediately hired back. Chizik kept him on. I think the alleged beef was over money with JJ, not with Chizik. JJ wanted his check he got when he was fired back, Willis wanted to keep it.

11:10 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

yep, coaches were given option of taking there severance in Dec or Jan, whichever they preferred for tax purposes. Willis took his in Dec, but wasn't severed. He left AU so he wouldn't have to return his severance pay. What a tool.

11:20 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Ok..here's all I can find from back then..I'm probably wrong..it won't be the first time.

Jay also had a post on Chizik's first day that said that he wasn't cleaning out his office as expeditiously as the other coaches that were still around...so who knows..At any rate he's a bammer now and will probably be somewhere else next year.

1.21.2009
Willis Leaves The Program
How about that? I've now officially seen it all.

Assistant coach James Willis is leaving Auburn to coach at Alabama.

Here's what Willis had to say via a statement issued from UA:

"I'm excited about the opportunity to come and work with Coach Saban at the University of Alabama," Willis said in the statement. "He is one of the best defensive coaches in the game and this is a chance to gain some great experience and learn from the best. You don't get many chances like that in the coaching business. When you combine that opportunity with the history and tradition at Alabama, it was a decision that was best for me personally as well as professionally. I know my wife and the kids are as excited as I am to join Coach Saban's staff."

IF YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS: ... good luck. I will say that James was shocked by being in limbo during the post-Tuberville period. I dismissed his shock as an acting job at the time. I'm not so sure now. I talked with him Sunday night and he didn't seem agitated. We even talked about the transition from Tuberville to Chizik. While he didn't seem particularly thrilled by (allegedly) not knowing what was happening during those first few days of Chizik's tenure, I never sensed that he was bitter. There is talk that his post-Tuberville severance package was an issue.

Willis isn't returning calls right now.

If it is Sexton just trying to get more money, he picked a bad time to do this coming off of a loss to Miss State.

At least with Tubs it was always coming off a win over Alabama.

Maybe he's doing it to take the focus off of the MSU loss..

I think the Heisman is becoming somewhat of a joke. I heard a former voter say he stopped voting because of how it works. Voters are using the system to make their vote count twice. They will vote their man #1 but then leave the clear #2 guy off of their ballot. Like Tebo last year, he had the most #1 votes but was also left off the most ballots. It should be set up that you only vote for the winner.

Anyone have any Auburn recruiting new? Last night WTC was saying something about a big DL about to commit and someone said there could be a couple of more this weekend.

This was at the top of my google mail web page:

Alabama BCS Packages - SportsTravel.com - Book your BCS Championship game travel package. Order now.

I bet FSJ is behind that. See M=B, I told you not to trust those people. WHere's my barf bag?

M=B, are you on a PC with IE? IF so, use Google Chrome. Otherwise, I'd have to agree with FSJ. Although I don't recall that problem when I used IE, either. Or Mozilla. Or Safari.

On D&B (B'ham radio show) yesterday, I heard a Bammer say that he booked his room/flight for Pasadena before the season even started. That kind of sums up what I've always thought about Bammers...they're stupid and arrogant, but somehow that seems to work for most of them. (FSJ, you seem to be a rare exception). I guess they all know about the deal with the devil. I guess he's gonna collect a lot more Bama souls this year.
