Another expert chimes in

Hey everyone. I spent some time earlier today on the HABOTN Hotline® with Chad Simmons, who is Scout.com's Southeastern recruiting manager.

My people inside the Scout organization said he was the go-to guy.

And he was.

Here is some of what he had to say. You can read more in tomorrow's editions of the Advertiser, which will feature a story on quarterback Cam Newton.

  • On how Newton's signing affected Auburn's recruiting allure: ``It definitely didn't hurt. Everyone thought he was going to Mississippi State because he had such a long-standing relationship with Dan Mullen. So Auburn kind of stole him away and that was something of a surprise to everyone. It created momentum. All those kids, the recruits, they know Cam Newton. They know what kind of player he is. Signing him created a buzz. The offensive recruits think to themselves: Let's go to Auburn and play with a kid like that."

  • On how Marcus Lattimore choosing Auburn would push the Tigers' reputation even higher: ``I'd say him committing to Auburn would push that class right up there near the top. Anybody who gets Lattimore, whether it's Auburn or South Carolina, will be better immediately. He's an awesome player, the total package of on-the-field ability and off-the-field presence. I say that, but I like Michael Dyer almost as much. They're both as good as it gets."

  • On where Auburn would rank with Lattimore and Whitaker on board: ``That's hard to say because you never know what happens on Signing Day. There's always some surprises. If Auburn holds everyone they have right now and add those two, I'd say they're in the 2, 3, 4 range." (Auburn currently is No. 5 in the Scout.com rankings.)

  • On the Tigers' class in general right now: ``It's a very good class. It's the best I've seen from Auburn. You know about the four- and five-star guys, but they have some great sleepers, too. Kenneth Carter is one. Dakota Mosley is a lot better than people think. I'm not sure he'll stay at tight end at Auburn, but he'll be good anywhere they put him. Considering it's their first full recruiting year, having to build a lot of relationships from scratch, they've done a really nice job. It's a huge success."

    ALSO OF NOTE:

  • Simmons spoke last night with DT Jeffrey Whitaker and believes Auburn remains the leader despite Whitaker's trip to Georgia last week. ``I sense that he'll pick Auburn, though he hasn't told me that," he said.

  • Simmons believes OL James Stone will sign with Tennessee.

  • He made his final assessments and adjustments yesterday, which included bumping S Demetruce McNeal from the nation's No. 70 safety to No. 31: ``Teams are going to regret not going after him because he'll be an excellent college player. Auburn offered him as a sophomore and locked him up. He had an outstanding senior season," he said.

As a resident of the great State of South Carolina, I really hope Lattimore ends up on the plains. I'm not sure I can handle the cockiness of my SC friends if he chooses Carolina.

That said, it's been fun asking them questions like "How many 1000 yard rushers has Darth Visor produced?" and "How many running backs have been drafted out of Carolina since 1982?".

I hope you guys are right about Coleman.

I am listening to PF, (I know, I know), but it would just be a field day for the Bams on that show if our best prospect goes to Bama.

Bammers are slamming Auburn's class because 'Auburn can give them a chance to play'. Okay, did Alabama not do the same thing? Is that not how you start to build a program?

You win by recruiting good players, coaching them up, and winning games. Auburn has playing time to offer. You offer playing time, then win, then your program gets noticed, then you get more good players and the the cycle continues.

It is too simple.

Luv,

I have trust issues. I see something like that and immediately think that what we hear is not the complete story. They say he's sick. He comes out and plays and one of two things happen. Either he shines and everyone says what a great player he must be to work through an illness like that, or he's rusty and everyone says "we'll, he was really ill." The setup has to be made because he's under a spotlight as much (or more)as he was all year for NFL purposes.

74-The 1st mistake is listening to fbomb.
The 2nd mistake is applying logic to anything the UAt callers have to say. They do it to get under the skin of ANY AU listeners. You gave a perfect example. AU is only getting players because they can offer plating time. How easy they forget they could offer playing time 3 years ago. AU only won their 6 in a row because UAt was on probation. How many times did UAt beat AU when AU was on probation. They never bring that up in the conversation.

AU fans can and do the same thing. UAt does not have the market cornered on that. It just seems to be many more on their side.

The best way to handle them, when they start taling about the games is just tell them 'I didn't watch it. My team wasn;t playing and I had something to do.' They looked stunned at first and then just walk away. I REALLY enjoy doing that. I did that for SEC champ game to a friend. He is still a freind, but we do not talk Fball because the thinks UAt is all that and a bag of chips. We don't talk about it and that is fine with me.

How about them apples!

I guess difference in the fan bases is like this. I expect both sides to get good players. I expect to win my fair share or games. I expect a championship run every once and awhile. However, my life is not defined by that, nor do I think it is my birth right. Bammers are defined by their football team, and that is sad.

My motto: recruit good players, coach them up, win games, then championships will come.

Best case scenario, we keep coleman, get grant, get beasly away from clemson, d j howard goes to kentucky.

lessons taught to ua and clemson. don't mess with au recruits. this ait tommy tuberville your dealing with.

sorry, second UA commit to switch.

Low said Saban and staff do not worry about stars they trust their on evaluation.
Must laugh, isn't that what the bammers say got Tubs in trouble.
But it is hard to believe because if you look at there classes of the past 3 years you sure see a lot of STARS.

8:06 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

WTC, pleasantly surprised I hope.

8:07 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

digger, saban relies on the recruiting services to get him a lot of information, including sending him video, etc. I'm sure if he sees a prospect they think is a four or five star, he's checking out the video himself.

I'm not eating a pansy burger place ... I'm a supporter of the Gump's one and only Hamburger King (and 5 Guys when it is convenient).

I'm sure most coaches do that, use the services for info and video.

Hamburger King has regular burgers and jumbo burgers ... with and without cheese.

No bacon, no guacamole, no nonsense. Mayo, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion are available.

No fries. Chips.

Coke products, orange drink, chocolate milk.

If you need a dessert, Snickers are in the drink cooler.

Grits in the Gump are best found at the Farmers Market cafeteria downtown.

Stupup, I could definitely go for a Niffers burger and some corn nuggets right about now.

I was seriously craving some Mama G's recently, I need to get back to Auburn soon.

Student who gives the Top 3 places on campus... admits on camera he's never been to Toomer's for a lemonade.

8:38 PM

My favorite places in Au, back in the day.

War eagle supper club.
Hungry Hunter-great butt hut back then.
Auburn hotel downtown, where drink wars in the early 80's resulted in 6 for 1 drinks. Get drunk for about $2.50.
Notice there are no academic buildings mentioned.

Also, the concourse where brother Jed and Sister Sarah preached several times a year. A happening place.

Wait, what? This is either a strange compliment that I don't entirely get, or a completely random dig. Either way, I'm intrigued (and ashamed that I don't get it).

AU's only offense, motion in the high post until someone randomly fires up a long three. OMG.

8:44 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Points in the paint 22-OM and 2-AU.

I think Au leads the nation in giving up layups in a set offense. Run a high screen and the guard can just stroll down the lane for a layup. No one ever picks the guy up.

Rob Stone is kind of a joker anyway. He and Bill Simmons (aka the Sports guy) are big buddies. This is how Stone rolls.

Somebody help me out, Tues. was Wing night at Niffers and Thursday was burger night...or do I have that backwards?

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I know Flip, just don't know how that relates to me....am I "hoi polloi"?

Speaking of Burgers, this place just recently replaced Five Guys in my top 5 places to get a burger. It's brilliant.

Among my finalists would be the Willy Burger at Willies Weenie Wagon in Brunswsick, Ga.

Peter,

In and Out is very polarizing. Most people really, really love it, or they don't.

My office is split, me and 3 guys just love it. However, there is a faction of the office that don't like it at all
