Looking at: Quarterbacks

Hey everyone. I know we'll be talking plenty about Texas tonight, but there's no rule that says we can't talk about Auburn right now. Right?

We discussed quarterbacks during the Inaugural Video Campfire® on Tuesday, but many of you were not able to see it. I don't mean to throw salt in your wounds by mentioning that. Just want to make sure the people who did participate in the IVC® don't think I'm going senile by repeating many of the things we have discussed.

THE FINAL 2009 DEPTH CHART
1.) Chris Todd
2.) Neil Caudle
3.) Barrett Trotter
4.) Clint Moseley
5.) Tyrik Rollison*

*=suspended and not practicing.

THE FINAL 2009 ANALYSIS
  • Chris Todd. Started all 13 games, went 198-for-358, 2,612 yards, 22 TDs, 6 INTs. Had a year that surpassed my expectations. He was careful without being tentative, seemed to grasp what Gus Malzahn was trying to accomplish. Arm strength didn't wane as expected. Still not fast. Locked in on Darvin Adams more than he should have, but Adams certainly was up to the challenge. Grade: A-.

  • Neil Caudle. Played in four games, went 15-for-20, 170 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. Played rarely. Made a nice 52-yard scoring run against Ball State. Questions linger about his ability to play mistake-free football, but Caudle really hasn't been given an opportunity to acquit himself. Maybe I'm still hanging on what Tony Franklin said. Grade: INC

  • Barrett Trotter. Didn't play. Spent the season rehabilitating from a knee injury. Looked tentative with his repaired knee when I saw him in December, but has plenty of arm strength. He's supposed to be pretty fast. Has the knee injury affected him? Grade: INC.

  • Clint Moseley. Didn't play. Spent the season with the scout team. Big kid, strong arm. Doesn't seem mobile to me, though I didn't see much of him during those December practices. Grade: INC.

  • Tyrik Rollison: Didn't play. Spent the season in the No. 3 slot until drawing a season-ending suspension in early December. He's supposed to be The Quarterback of The Future, but that designation was put into doubt when Auburn signed Cam Newton last month. Rollison is an enigma right now. Grade: INC.

MY PROJECTED 2010 DEPTH CHART
1.) Cameron Newton
2.) Caudle
3.) Rollison
4.) Moseley
5.) Trotter

THE PRELIMINARY 2010 ANALYSIS 2009 ANALYSIS
  • Newton. He's spent one full season at Florida and one (highly successful) season at a Texas junior college. He was an option quarterback in high school and was being groomed as Tim Tebow's successor at Florida. Newton is a runner first, though his passing wasn't exactly problematic in Texas. I haven't seen him play. So why do I have him No. 1? They signed him to play. He signed to play. He has two years left. That combination of facts makes me believe he'll have the best shot at a starting job this fall.

  • Caudle. He is what he is. No offensive coordinator has considered Caudle a No. 1 during his five seasons at Auburn. College football has seen guys in this position thrive during that final year -- D.J. Shockley comes to mind -- but Caudle's path to that gig is cloudy. I don't foresee him beating his competitors this time around. Stranger things have happened ... but not many.

  • Rollison. He needs to get his act together, instill confidence in his coaches and display the leadership Gene Chizik is expecting. Surely the signing of Newton gave Rollison a shock. He'd better improve quickly or he'll be left behind.

  • Moseley. I know Malzahn really likes this kid. That's all I can give you. I'd expect him to leave within a year if his playing-time prospects don't improve significantly.

  • Trotter. Not sure what to think of him. I believe he has talent. I know he's appears blocked on this depth chart. Trotter or Moseley, one of them, will have to leave if they have designs on actually playing college football.

I am hoping to not see Caudle as the number 2. If he isn't the starter, a fifth year senior doesn't need to see the field. We need to get one of the younger guys some snaps. My wishful depth chart is...

1) Newton
2) Moseley
3) Rollison
4) Trotter
5) Caudle

I just don't see Caudle involved. He could improve and earn a spot, but assuming Newton doesn't get injured very early, I would go with the above.

Question for any of you that know, or can make something up that sounds really believable: It seems that having 14 or 6 QB's on your roster is a bit excessive. How many QB's do we normally have on the roster, and how many do other normal D1 BCS college teams usually have?

Mr.TD,

Malzahn wants his offensive players to be able to play multiple positions (or so I've read), so just because it says QB beside a players name doesn't mean he's not going to be playing holder, wideout, or longsnapper. 16 is the perfect number. 32 would be too man, and 2 would be too few.

Four on a roster is probably ideal. To me the fact that we ended up with so many is due to the coaches being dissatisfied with the ones we have. Them signing Newton reaffirmed this for me.

12:45 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

If Newton starts 2 years, then Rolllison starts two years, we're really only looking at 3 QBs as backups for a couple of years (plus Kodi). I like two year starters at QB.

12:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is also very interesting that Kodi went from basically tied for the starting job coming out of next spring to not being on the radar at QB. He does have experience and the fact that he was tied with Caudle says a lot to me. It is entirely possible that this had to do with team chemistry and Malzahn wanting to give him a fair chance.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

PF, I am with you in terms of 2 year starters at QB. I would really like to see Auburn get in the habit of developing a new QB while we still have a starter. The best example of this not happening was when Craig graduated. We hadn't played hardly anyone else at all so it was basically going back to square one.

12:54 PM

12:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

PF, I wonder the same thing about Kodi. Under the right circumstances, things may have turned out entirely different.

Ironically, if we hadn't signed Newton, I would be thinking Caudle the starter, at least early on. Caudle is the Rodney Dangerfield of Auburn.

i don't know if Kodi has enough speed or if he runs good routes, but he surprised me with his hands and his blocking, most of the time.

1:02 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Supposedly Kodi has decent speed, not outstanding. I think his quickness helps him a lot.

With him, I blame whoever decided he should play in 2007. A redshirt season running the scout team may have done Kodi a lot of good. Now a redshirt would bean waiting a year to set the bench.

1:05 PM
Blogger BinOBA said...

Kodi has the chance to become an outstanding posession receiver for AU. He's a former QB and should be on the same page as the qb when he sees something in a defense he can exploit. He could make some big plays next year if put in the right situation. Seems like the kind of guy that could come out and be a hines ward type for us.

1:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Bin, that is what I hope for Kodi, although we have a lot of talent at receiver. He does seem to have the best shot there. Jay has made it very plain that you won't see Kodi in the QB race.

1:08 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

with Malzahn willing to go five wide if he feels he has the talent, there's plenty of room for Kodi to excel at WR this year.

I'm just hoping he is the kind of guy that will see the quick slant get drilled and know to run at the safety. He can be that cerebral guy, he just needs some reps.

Kodi's passing fundamentals are horrible. He throws short passes like a girl ...he doesn't turn his shoulders and essentials throws like he's in a bar throwing darts. Kodi would never have been a good QB.

Based on the limited film I've seen, Newton has only somewhat better fundamentals than Kodi. Every now and again someone will have a freak body that will allow good passing with bad fundamentals (see Brett Farve).

Rollison has very nice passing fundamentals and based on the film I've seen, sets up quickly, correctly and throws accurately. We need some tutors to help Mr. Rollison.

I hope Rollison will rise to the challenge, because I think he is our best opportunity to have a well-rounded QB and not RB in disquise.

Now ..I think I'll copy and save this diatribe. that way I can copy and paste this same thing onto the HABOTN evertime QB discussions arise.

Hoopie...nice little view there. I somewhat agree. Rollison does looks very good with his technique.

I haven't seen enough of Newton's technique to make a determination on him. In his 'highlight' film he does make some very nice throws...throws I haven't seen an AU QB make in some time. With that said, it's called a highlight tape for a reason, so I'm tempering my expectations a bit.

I do believe Newton will start. I view him as not only a capable starter, but an actual difference maker at the position. Todd was a semi-capable starter in my opinion.

Going from a semi-capable starter all the way to a difference maker starter would really open up this offense and make us tough to beat.

The Newton highlight films I saw had him throwing sloppy passes to wide open receivers. At least they were catchable, but only because the WR was so open he had time to adjust. I didn't see him hit even one guy in stride and many required serious receiver adjustments.

Look at Rollison's films ...he hit receivers in stride, and as a HS QB threw very accurately into traffic and over the middle. Rollison keeps his head looking downfield, yet seems to know when to move in the pocket. He even threw with good fundamentals when on the run.

These are only highlight films, but until I see something different, that's all I can go on.

I hope Mr. Rollison will fix his off-field issues. He talks a good game on facebook, now let's see the walk.

I saw a little bit of College Football Live and and they had a graphic showing how many national championships each school had won. Texas had four. Bama had seven.

Rece Davis (who, for a Bammer, I also like) had to comment on it.

Awesome.

For those wanting to become members of ROF, FTH, or NN, I recommend using the words puttet and hate a lot. Referring to hating puppets might be even more beneficial.

You can also hurt yourself by doing crazy things like mentioning the number twelve.

I'm thinking Hot Chocolate and an outside fire are going to be better than watching the game tonight...wonder if I'll get a citation for building an outside fire in my community.

The next few days will be interesting, no matter how tonight's game comes out. I can laugh at Bambi because of how they behave when the win or lose. I am flexible like that.

Maybe a death match with Michael would be a good test for potential ROF members?

We'd never have another RoF class again. Michael fights goats. He can beat anyone.

Blogger Fearless Freep said...

I, too, have a confession.

I won't be all that disappointed if Bama wins tonight.

No, not out of some misplaced and undeserved "SEC loyalty". I just know a lot of good Bama folks (like Faker) who will be happy if they do, and that outweighs the distressing prospect of unbridled joy amongst the unwashed and toothless types.

Plus, I think a win this season, coupled with some key staff defections, will take away some of their edge in '10. Saban will still demand perfection, but I'm guessing enough of their returning players will take a 'I've got a ring, so I don't have to work so hard' attitude, at least temporarily, to adversely affect their performance.

Well, that's the theory, anyways.

It's true. I am an impressive fighter. I killed Paul Bunyan. I'm not proud of it, but I did it. He was talking major trash. He was a Big Ten fan.

Blogger michael said...

Freep... I will be rooting against bammer, but pretty much all the bammers I know are nice, so I will be happy for them. I feel ya dog.

4:34 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have to pull for Texas and Boom. Plus, I really like the look on Saban's face when he is upset. There is something about a raging short man around a bunch of 6 foot something football players that tickles me.

4:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for Faker, I am still convinced he is a closet Auburn fan. He just doesn't fit the mullet stereotype.

4:37 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

You might have noticed I didn't say I'd be 'pulling' for them. . .even a reasonable Barner like myself couldn't pull that off.

One of my Bama-fan co-workers (the one who ISN'T an alum, but lived in T'town for a few years, so he's got a semi-legit excuse) asked me if I'd be cheering for 'his boyz' tonite.

I told him that if Bama lost, I'd be every bit as disappointed as he was in '04 when AU got left out of the Championship.

He seemed to understand. Not a bad guy, for a Bammer.

4:50 PM

FF, great comparison. By the way, our 2004 team would kill either of the two teams playing tonight, which is why that season irritates me so bad.

regarding JGT's qb battle next year, I say ignore Trotter at your own peril. Tubby almost took the redshirt off him first year. I've seen him play. he has an arm, and can run..better than average runner. cant see why everyone is so high on mosely. of course the coaches are going to praise him...he's running the freakin scout team. tough job for anyone. newton gets the first shot...they wouldnt sign him as juco if they didnt intend him to play. if he crashes and burns.. between rollison and trotter imo.

5:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am still thinking Tubby to Tubbock, but they might get someone like Smart. It is just a school like TT is a hard place to win, which would seem more attractive to a proven coach, rather than an up and comer.

Sponge, I knew someone was pushing Trotter. I hope he is as good as you think. As for Moseley, there isn't really enough info to know for sure about these guys, but the praise of Ted Roof along with Moseley's good size make him look like a possibility.

I agree that the '04 Tigers would have jumped all over either of these teams - but I fear that the offense would go into its Tubershell and it would end up going either way (kinda like VA Tech in the Sugar Bowl that year).

Faker, what ever happened to Coach Fraud. After he executed the worlds best belly flop at A&M, he seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Any chance of him going to Texas Tech, or is it more likely that he will sell you home owners insurance?

That MSU game next season looks to be more important than most MSU games. We only have about 4 road games all of next season, and that is one of them. Being early in the season and being followed by Clempson makes it a possible trap game. I do believe MSU was much improved this season, although if I remember correctly their schedule didn't really reflect it.

"Til Alabama rolls their tide"?

A Bama fan called into Mad Money saying that. Incredible. I was under the impression that Bambi thought stock were something that should be kept pinned up.
