Schedule update

Hey everyone. Sorry for the lack of posts yesterday. I made a (rare) trip into Advertiser headquarters to handle some business. That generally results in me talking at length with people in there, I lose track of time, 2 o'clock turns into 5 o'clock and then I'm done.

You know what I mean?

We'll pick up the annual Auburn Season Review project this afternoon.

I'm thinking it should be a position-by-position look: How did players perform at each position, who will play those positions next season and which newcomers could become a factor?

I'll start with quarterback. See you around 2 p.m. CST.

A STEP FORWARD: In our thirst for pushing the envelope here at the HABOTN, we probably will have a HABOTN Technological Breakthrough® to share with you this afternoon. As such, we encourage you to be here around 2 if possible.

AS FOR THE PICTURE: That's Matt Kemp. He's one of my favorite baseball players (outfielder for the Dodgers) and now the boyfriend of Rihanna. I am very proud. Well done, young man.

my off the top review/opreview:

Newton and Dyer will be big factors next season.

Speaking of Newton, Malzahan has someone he believes in: that makes this offense VERY good. You thought this year was nice, wait til next!

Gayden will start on the OL. Ziemba returns also, giving us a very solid line.

McCalebb will be back to his "normal self"...which was very good this year. All I anticipated...other than the ankle problem.

The D will be much better. I think Roof will be able to use the schemes he likes due to the added depth and having just an overall more skilled/experienced team.

Lutzenkirchen gives Newton an excellent dump off target--much more sure handed than Trott.

Adams made a huge leap forward this year. Could really be that big time receiver AU needs.

Fannin will continue to be a beast, and his healthy will get better and better, making him a more sure thing.

Our Special Teams get better...no way they could get worse. Better special teams wins 2 of those ball games we lost by 7 or less--Bama and Kentucky.

I could go on and on, but that's enough to get us started.

7:50 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Yeah. Brooks did retire.

He was good for one of my alma maters, so he gets my respect.

I think Tuberville would be a good hire. He's fun ... and he's a totally different guy than Leach. Tuberville won't make an ass out of you.

Might make some questionable staffing decisions ... but he won't destroy you.

After the 46-yd TD pass in the Outback Bowl, I said, "As exciting as AU has been this year, can you imagine how exciting they will be when they have a really good QB?!" And, since the D will have some depth, opposing teams won't be scoring like they did this season.

What the heck was the deal with Benton this year?

8:00 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Hard to say ehyou he messed up on some routes early on and then didn't see much action. Maybe they didn't think he was ready to play in the SEC

8:03 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

McCalebb- I want to believe he will be better next season, but i'm not convinced that he will not be an injury proned player due to his size. He needs to get bigger. I don't think he can take getting the ball 10-15 times a week in the SEC. I assume that is always why he runs to the sideline, to avoid the hit, but I'm not sold that he can be consistently counted on to make big plays all year long. I hope i'm wrong.

8:03 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

FAH sure talked big at the start of practice. Said something like "don't worry about my size I love contact". Well that didn't last long

8:07 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

According to their rosters, McCalebb is about the same size as McCluster. McCluster didn't seem to have a problem being successful in the SEC.

8:07 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Re: McCalebb, I'm not so sure it's the contact that will wear him out, he picked up the dreaded high ankle sprain on a play where there wasn't much contact.

Look at McCluster, Ole Miss rode him into the ground and he's not much, if any bigger than McCalebb.

8:08 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think Tubs would be a good hire for Texas Tech, but I don't think they will make that hire.

8:08 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

But, Eddie, I do agree with as to why he always runs to the sideline. And, I don't think we have to count solely on him. AU has several good RB's.

8:09 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Luv- McCalebb did. McCalebb and McCluster may be the same size, but their running styles are completely different IMO.

8:09 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

We usually are, Sean!

8:10 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Maybe it was the high ankle injury but he sure loved that side line. I hope he gets back to where he was early last year. I am pulling for him.

8:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

McCalebb dances a lot more than McCluster. McCluster hits the hole and is gone, plus he's a better reciever out of the backfield.

McCalebb should be better once he's not afraid to hurt his ankle again.

8:11 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Auburn had Markeith Cooper who rarely got hurt and he may be the smallest, skinniest RB i've ever seen. McCalebb did get a high ankle sprain on a stupid play call I might add, but he always runs for the sideline, even before the injury. I don't think he likes contact whereas I think McCluster embraces it and thrives on making you miss. It's just my opinion and I hope that I'm wrong. Regardless of anything, McCalebb is only designed to get 10-15 touches a game when completely healthy in this offense.

8:12 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"McCalebb did get a high ankle sprain on a stupid play call I might add"

What? A fake punt up by 30 vs Ball State is a stupid play call?

8:13 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

WERK simple answer

yes

8:14 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

LOL, WERK.

McCluster was very exciting to watch. Ole Miss is gonna miss him.

8:15 AM
Blogger Jet said...

That play call was the angriest I had been all year, and that was before McCalebb got hit on the play.

It was like the 1987 Florida State game, down 34-7 on the final play, with Tracy Rocker on the field. Rock blows out his knee and misses the UAT game and the bowl game with Syracuse.

Stupid. No other explanation required.

8:18 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

8:22 AM

If the players executed the plays properly there wouldn't be lapses.

8:22 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I hope the staff gets together and works on how to use time outs effectively and figure how a no-huddle team cannot run a 2 minute offense. That is what I want solved in the off season.

8:24 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Eddie, can't agree with you more on the 2 minute offense.

Also, why the heck are we running play-action, see Outback Bowl 3rd Quarter, repeatedly in these slow developing plays, WHEN WE HAVEN'T RUN THE BALL EFFECTIVELY AT ALL? Ok, I'm done.

8:26 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Kodi changed Geometry. It used to be that people wanted to see him on the field with the ball in his hands.

Now it's a GIVEN that we all scream when he lines up at Wildcat or attempts a pass.

So, Auburn's Backfield could look like this in the 2-Deep Roster:

QB- Newton / Rollison
RB- Dyer / Lattimore

with Seastrunk / McCalebb in the other TB role.

I'll defend FAH a bit here.

A lot of times when he was avoiding contact it was on the sideline with FAH seeking missiles in the neighborhood.

In the middle of the field, he has the ability to juke either way and make people miss. On the sideline he doesn't, and it be contact for contact's sake.

Put simply, it would be foolish for him to take on a safety who may have 50-70 pounds on him with no place to juke.

CJ runs a sub 10 100m. Bolt runs a sub 9. He's serious about wanting to race at that distance? C'mon!

Bolt has very good acceleration, self-admitted slow starter, but world-record top end. If you did the splits he can run 50 in less than 5 seconds. CJ runs the 40 in 4.2. Anything beyond 40 and it's done.

I don't think it's close if it's anything over 30 yards. A professional runner is much faster than people think. BOLT IS FAST...PERIOD...no second guessing the fact.

I'm sure his 2k rushing will help him more than a silly race against Usain Bolt.

He also broke Earl Campbell's franchise rushing record for a single season and bested Marshall Faulk's yards from scrimmage.

He's the first RB to have 500 yards receiving as well as 2k rushing in a single season.

10:13 AM
Blogger michael said...

If he is already sub 10 seconds in the 100 m, CJ might be able to beat Bolt if he practiced for a year and took whatever Bolt was taking. Bolt went from 10.03 to 9.69 in one year. Jamaica doesn't have a random testing program. A few Jamaican track athletes were busted for HGH the same year Bolt got his record... but not through testing, through discovering they received shipments of it. HGH doesn't show up in urine tests. Just saying.

Of course, some people say a majority of NFL players are already on HGH, so maybe Chris is already juiced up.

What do we do the first five, six, or seven games while we're waiting on these guys to develop?

Why not Super Mario for 20 carries a game? Yeah he used to fumble a lot but that was a long time ago. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield. It would make no sense to limit his role at this point.

They may play, but it doesn't mean they'll play well.

I never said I wanted a freshman to tote the rock or be the main guys and I don't think they will.

That is my thinking also Scottie. That Mario will be the best option at starter, at least early. The freshman will be behind in knowledge of the offense and experience.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I never said the 2 freshman RB's would be steller to begin with, but I think they will play out of necessity. Who do we really have to take that spot? Not Aycock, Smith or Fannin IMO.

10:46 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Fannin is not a TB, am I the only one that thinks this? I mean, he barely got any snaps when Tate was out.

10:47 AM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

I don't know if its possible to teach Mario to stop dancing so much and run upfield. If they can I think he would be effective. Less Reggie Bush more A. Peterson.

10:52 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I concur with Eduardo. Mario is Wario, and doesn't fit in as the TB.

It will be one of the youngsters.

I dissent with his characterization of Ben Tate as a hexagon. He was decidedly an octagon.

Clay Travis says Boise St. are legit national title contenders after last night's win. Anybody else convinced?

That's why I hated this matchup to begin with. It doesn't clarify anything. Put one of these teams against Florida and then we'll figure something out. Cincy certainly didn't pass the eye test.

11:28 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

E-Bro,

For the 1st 8 games, we see if Casinious Moore can fill in like he did in 2001.

Actually I'd like to see Fannin get a chance to be the feature RB early on next year.

Oh boy ...QB discussions at 2pm.

Any bets that an interweb switchbox somewhere in Columbia, SC will overload?

I see it's time to start predicting all of the incoming freshmen to be world beaters from day one. Well let's see ...that 2 star DB, Mr. Bates did alright for us this year. The others ...they progressed like 99.5% of all first year freshmen.

Look around, there are probably only 1 or 2 true frosh in the SEC that "star" in their first season. There are +250 freshmen recruits each season in the SEC(=+/- 99.5%).

The JUCO guys could seriously help the first year. A bunch of this large freshmen class will redshirt, some will provide needed help on special teams and a few will play. Will any star? ....odds are greatly against it.

Sorry guys. I have to vent a little, I have been insulated from Alabama football for 15 years as I have live in Los Angeles. But for Christ sake, the LA Times has run a story on Alabama for 5 days in a row, I am about to loose my mind.

Yesterday it was a McElroy piece, damn it, he is a Dodger fan to boot and can name the starting line up, today it is Ingram and how He deserved the Heisman.

Hopefully I see some Alabama fans and give them directions to Pasadena via Long Beach.

This BCS game can't end quick enough.

Two things I would like to see next year. 1st on 3rd and short (<4 yrds) lets run the ball. I think we out thought ourselves on some of these short plays. Just run it. 2nd I want to see a different wildcat QB if we continue to run the wildcat.

Ah, Casinious Moore. Like him. Good guy. Talented guy.

Aside from the 2001 Mississippi St. game, just not a football player.

I don't mean that in a bad way. He's similar to Tim Hawthorne in that vein. Football seemed like a hobby to him. Nothing more.

I can definitely see why Texas Tech would hire Tuberville. How often do they get to hire one of the winningest SEC coaches?

I can also see why they would, which would be several reasons, primarily conservative style and age. He is no longer one of the young up and comers like he was when he came to Auburn.

Speaking of calling out USC AD Mike Jarret, Jay Bilas absolutely shredded him to pieces last night while calling the Pitt-Cincy game on ESPN.

Asked what he thought about the USC situation, Bilas said straight up that Jarret should be fired.

I couldn't really argue the point given what has occurred with the basketball and football programs in recent years.

If TT wants to step up and play big boy ball, they should hire The Tub.

If they want to be where they've always been, hire the interim.

If I remember correctly, there was talk on the HABOTN surrounding a bet whether Tubs would end up coaching in a BSC conference.

This deal is not done, but just the fact that TTU is seriously considering him is counter to the chances some folks gave Tubs.

Did anyone shake on that bet?

1:13 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I don't see the big deal around Tech having to hire an AirRaid guy. With that system they will never be able to compete year in and year out against the big boys.

They would do well to implement something closer to Gus's scheme.

Blogger Seanzie said...

Is it too early to buy a Cam Newton jersey?

1:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sean, watch Tuberville. I see him getting a more open offense. He will never be the pass happy type, but I think he realized when Texas knocked off USC for the BCSNC that offenses are changing and he must adapt, hence the TF Experiment. I would expect him to do something similar, but hopefully he will give the OC more control and choice of his assistants.

1:18 PM
Blogger Jet said...

We never reached terms, Hoopie, and I'm still not convinced he'll be a head coach at a BCS conference school, but South Florida does stand out in my mind as a possibility should Leavitt crumble. Tubs has a better case to make as the potentially coach there, having recruited Florida extensively.

I've read that the uber-booster really wants Briles, who was a HS coaching legend in Texas.

The only surface water near Lubbock is in the buffalo wallows. Back in the day, we developed a retail deal there and I flew or drove in/out of there around 10 times. Hardly any trees ...and occasional small depressions in the land that were wallowed out by buffalo and hold water.

1:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I had guessed that the Big12 was the most likely destination for Tuberville. Looks like that guess has a chance. The ACC was my second choice.

As for Newton, I would name him the starter yet, but I think he is the leading candidate. I would break it down like this.

Newton: 50%
Moseley: 20%
Rollison: 20%
Other: 10%

Without the BBQ gang Tubs will pick an offensive Coordinator and let him run the show. He will pick good coaches all around. For the most part he picked some good ones at Auburn. He learned a lesson that you don't let your buddies run things YOU DO. I believe he would do well at TT.

1:23 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't see Texas Tech as a major player for the long haul. They are better off with an unconventional approach, given the schools in their division and the unkind geography of Lubbock.

1:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It wouldn't surprise me to see Nall follow Tuberville, but most of the other coaches seem pretty set. Some like Price might also show up, although they all seem to have found pretty sweat gigs.

1:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I can't see Texas Tech as a major power. They will could be similar to Arkansas or Ole Nutt and occasionally contend. I don't think they have the cash to compete with Texas A&M and certainly not Texas. There are also a ton of other colleges in Texas, including SMU which seems to be improving.

So WTC, how do we get all these super recruits in with maybe only 3 spots remaining?

Who isn't going to qualify?

1:36 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

uber-boosters usually win, especially if they're the kind that help but to meddle, exert ....see AU.

If this uber-booster possesses that paranoid instinct that only allows him to hire someone he knows, then Briles will fit nicely. Briles should be able to initially recruit W Texas well and would be stable. Then, after a short while, TTU would sink back into CFB mediocrity.

1:37 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

FSJ, I agree Tuberville made a mistake getting rid of Borges. I do think the issues we had were more related to an assistance rather than the OC, while also compounded to some degree by the poor 2003 and 2004 recruiting classes resulting from Jetgate. There is a lot that went on that contributed to the problem, but I think CTT could have saved himself a lot of grief by letting his OC pick his coaches. Most of the assistants would have likely stayed. I hope he has learned his lesson.

Sir Sean- AU has 22 for 2009. They can sign a total of 28 with hopefully getting 25 into class. I can think of 2 that may or may not qualify right now. There is probably one in the group that will greyshirt.

That is my take on it for now.

Hoopie ... not agreeing or disagreeing with your premise, I think that's where Texas Tech is going regardless -- back toward average to mediocre.

I'll offer a different take on the Son of Bill Stewart opinions on McNeill. It's an apples-oranges type of situation.

Rodriguez left on his own. There was no reason to try to keep continuity. Stewart wasn't even a coordinator. It was a silly move.

Texas Tech is in a different spot. Continuity to the current system makes more sense given the circumstances of the departure. It makes more sense to me to turn to McNeill, though I agree with Jay G is that Sumlin would be the guy I'd try to hire.
