better than the "flopper"...if you know what I mean?

Sorry CHB, I knew that walmartian FSJ was lurking and couldn't allow him to do it again.

If Rollison lives up to his hype, he should be able to compete with Newton, although he certainly isn't going to match his size. I am pretty sure Rollison is quicker.

Runningback will be interesting too. I consider Dyer pretty much a lock for playing time, but I am not sure we will have a clear starter at the beginning of the season.

9:42 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Since you used the correct term I will forgive you.

For Rollison to be a contender, to paraphrase a line from one of the best movies ever 'you got to get your mind right Tyrik'.

Blogger CHB said...

I don't think it really matters at RB like QB.

CHB, you should know that if I'm on and a flip is imminent, I'm vying for it.

How do you picture Dyer? I keep thinking of him as Rudy Johnson with speed.

I can't disagree with you. However, I think when looking a Lebo, two different pictures emerge. The upclose picture (this year) is not pretty and I would be inclined to clean house. Yet if you take a big picture overview, I think it is more repersentive of the program.

Auburn is not a basketball powerhouse. Beard Eaves is the only coach over .500 in conference that was there for any length of time. Lebo has not had overwhelming success, but he has steadily built after some tough patches.

The basketball IQ thing is not all Lebo's fault. All these kids have played so much ball and been coached so much they either have it or they don't. I think more have it than don't. Reed and Hargrove are out to 'get theirs' at the expense of the team. (IMO) That is selfishness, not lack of Basketball IQ. It stalls the offense then other guys force stuff out of frustration.

I have been around the game since I was 6 (I am 30) and I love basketball. I love to talk it with someone like you who obviously cares.

I think this is fasinating. I also think it would serve Auburn well not to do a rash move. The job at Auburn is seen as the worse in the league already. We don't need to do anything to make or rep any worse.

9:47 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

if newton is the real deal, book your tix for ATL next december. bammer will get a real up close look at our "sh*te offense" next year in ttown. i'm much more confident knowing he'll have an experienced ol in front of him. heck, some of the ol starters for this year may be in jeopardy of losing their jobs with the influx of new talent. not likely, but possible.

9:47 PM
Blogger CHB said...

He reminds me a lot of Ronnie. I think the starter depends on what happens with Smith. If he is around then I think he takes over at H-Back(he has great hands) and that finally moves Fannin to the full time RB, but Dyer will get plenty of touches. By the end of the year Dyer could be getting the majority of the carries.

9:47 PM
Blogger CHB said...

74-good points. I have argued for Lebo the whole time he has been here. Especially with that idiot Josh Moon from the gump paper. I thought all along he should get to open the new arena and let it help him recruit. It has obviously helped because of this newly signed clss. I'm just starting to get worried about the product on the court. I also don't like his personality. He is a nice guy, but a program like Auburn needs a "face". Someone that will promote the program. The 1st name that comes to my mind is a guy like Pearl at Ucheat.

The spots of concern on defense next season are the DBs. McFadden is a huge loss. If Etheridge comes back, I will feel better about the safeties.

The linebackers should be solid next season, which is gone to be a dramatic difference from this season.

9:52 PM
Blogger CHB said...

If reed and hargrove don't want to be team players then bench them. I would also like to see some passion on the sideline. That was one of my biggest complaints against Cliff. That and he spent too much time making music videos.

9:53 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Steve, our defense will be much improved next year. Depth was the single biggest concern. The d-line will still be pretty good and the lB's will become a strength. I too am worried about the db's but depth will help them as well.

Ben Tate was a very valuable player, and not just his senior year. You don't see many players as durable as he was. He is one player that contributed all four years.

9:54 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I "heart" Ben Tate!!!!

Blogger CHB said...

But....we are RBU baby and always will be.

9:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

CH, I agree. I wish we had a star type defensive tackle, but otherwise I think the line is fine. From what I have read, Eguae will be the man at DE. I don't think our DEs miss a beat, even without Coleman.

9:56 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

there used to be a website dyer set up with a long highlight reel that i can't find anymore. i watched all three rbs AU was heavily recruiting, and dyer was the one i liked best. 5-9 200+ ball of muscle with a low center of gravity and tough to bring down.

i don't want fannin at rb again-- ever. he is a true weapon at the h-back. fah, aycock dyer and lattimore will hopefully fill that rb role. i won't consider smith a factor until he is with the team again.

I'm still waiting for Tristan Davis to have a healthy season. He and Lester were big frustrations to me because they seemed to have such potential, but never really seemed to live up to it.

9:58 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I thought Eguea was a DT?

9:58 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I think Tristan could have been one of our best ever. He just couldn't stay healthy. He is now on my Dolphins' practice squad.

9:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Comparing possible new backs with current backs, I think of it like this.

Dyer = Tate
Lattimere = Fannin
Seastrunk = FAH

Yea, Seastrunk is bigger than FAH, but that is my mental picture anyways.

9:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

ch, you could be right, but I thought I read where he would play DE.

10:00 PM
Blogger CHB said...

FAH?

10:00 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

nick fairley has some star potential at dt. he has two more years. get some other impact players on d to take the attention away from him and he'll be a force in the middle. a little marksist if you will... i watched arky's and um's dls improve consistently when rock was their coach. i expect no less at AU.

10:01 PM
Blogger CHB said...

We are going to be stacked at DE someone will be moved inside.

10:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Eguae was behind Coleman on the depth chart.

10:02 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I like Fairley a lot. he looks so soft in the face, but he plays like a beast.

10:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

FAH = Fast as Hell = McCalleb. It is a JGT term.

10:03 PM
Blogger CHB said...

FAH-Got ya. I had seen that floating around before, but never figured it out.

10:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

My impression of Fairley is that the coaches liked his potential but he wasn't as disciplined in his assignments as they would like. I believe I read something like that early in the season, so the situation could have changed.

10:04 PM
Blogger CHB said...

FAH is so fast he doesn't use email. He writes out his message and hand delivers it.

74 ...

I've been watching Auburn basketball since about ... 1974 ... essentially the modern era of Auburn hoops.

Bob Davis recruited and cheated. We had fun, up-tempo teams, but he ran out of steam.

Sonny Smith made chicken salad out of chicken scratch. No resources, yet somehow got us to the tournament 5 years in a row. Auburn always rebounded with Sonny, and we were offensively sound. And Sonny was fun.

Tommy Joe Eagles got caught right out of the chute and went on probation. He seemed overmatched from the beginning. I didn't appreciate his "Bad to the Bone" entrance, either. But he was a good man.

Cliff Ellis knew how to teach the press, but not much else. Like most, he's as good as his talent. We can thank him for our NCAA troubles going out the door.

Lebo's probably the best X and O of the bunch. Either Lebo or Sonny. But we're going nowhere. He's had three 4-12 seasons in the league, and he's heading toward his fourth.

My attitude about Lebo is like my attitude about Tuberville. It's time for a change. He's been paid well, and he's owed nothing beyond what his contract demands.

We've got to try something different.

10:05 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Fairley made some mistakes but the effort was always there and he made them at full speed.

10:05 PM
Blogger stupup74 said...

CHB,

I truly believe that the product on the court is more on the players than Lebo, because they are seniors doing stupid things like going 1 on 4. I promise (and I live in Chattanooga and watched Lebo at UTC) he has NEVER coached that.

On to football. I think the future is bright. It will be important for the QB (whoever it is) to win it outright early. If Newton wins it, then it really adds a big gain threat on the pull read stuff and that will keep the DEs from crashing down on McCalleb and Dyer.

It is great to be an Auburn Tiger, win, lose or draw. It is more fun pulling for the good guys. I was raised a Bammer aka walmartian, but I moved to the good side after my time as a student at Auburn.

I am a proud AU alum, lose or draw. War Eagle, and good night everybody.

10:05 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Eguae was injured in the fall and ended up redshirting...

Coaches love him at DE though...

CHB... which DE are you going to move inside? Goggans - no, Carter - no, Ford - no, Eguae - no, Henderson - no, Sanders - no, ??

10:05 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

CH=B, the FAH term developed when someone asked Jay how McCalleb fit in. His response was that he is fast as hell, that is how he fits in. It was hilarious.

10:06 PM
Blogger CHB said...

If Lebo stays/goes I'm ok either way and I can see the arguements for both positions. Bottome line I just want us to win. When I 1st got to Auburn '98 we were pretty dang good. Those basketball games rival any football game I have ever been to. Fans would line up and hour before tip off like we were UNC or something. It was great.

10:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Ford will be interesting. I consider him Hot Carter Jr, but you won't see him at defensive tackle.

10:10 PM
Blogger CHB said...

D. unfortunately I don't get paid to make those decisions. I won't guess but at least one of them will.

10:10 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Won't be Ford....too small. He is a speed rusher.

10:11 PM
Blogger stupup74 said...

Jet,

Again, hard to disagree. My point is this, if AU can upgrade, then upgrade, in ANY sport at anytime.

Again all three of those 4-12 years had circumstances out of his control. This year is more on him, but this is basketaball, you are going to have bad years sometimes.

However, I have this nagging feeling that if we pull the plug on Lebo this year it will cement Auburn's rep as a career killing job. We would look better as a program to let him get at least one year in the new arena. I think it is the right thing to do.

Change for change sake is always a bad idea.

10:13 PM
Blogger stupup74 said...

CHB,

I could not agree with you more.

10:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

What will be remarkable is what happens with the linebackers. We have everyone back and add one of the better linebacker recruiting classes we have had. It should be like night and day.

Also, I read where Roof use to run multiple defensive fronts while at Minnesota. We could see a lot more creativity from him when depth concerns aren't so prevalent.

10:13 PM
Blogger Norm said...

G'night peeps.

10:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

stupup, I understand your concern about the rep of being a career killer for coaches, but 5 seasons to me is more than reasonable. One of the reasons I am usually against coaching changes is you really have to give a new guy 4 or 5 years. If you dump coaches quickly, you get a bad rep.

expect ncaa to announce sanctions against uscw sometime in the next few months. carroll seeing the hurt train coming has to be what factored into his decision to take another shot in the nfl. the usc bball program is in hot water with mayo and floyd and all the years of agents' activity around the football program are bound to catch up. i think his leaving is a sign. he knew he could not compete with neuheial across town and ucla if uscw was killed by sanctions. he got out while the gettin' was good and to somewhere the ncaa can never touch him.

10:35 PM

i have always maintained AU was the best amatuer team in the country in 2004. i'd love to see uscw have to vacate their championship and bush his heisman. that would be outright hilarious. maybe the long wait for what happens to uscw is almost over.

would it not be even more hilarious is in 3-4 years bammer had to vacate their 2009 title and tear down the $aban statue? if the ncaa has the proof as some in the rumor mill have said for a long time, that day may come. until then, a plexiglass case should display their latest trophy at the entrance of the closest wal-mart to campus.

I am torn. Always was a big supporter of CTT. Met him a couple of times & he seemed genuinely nice. I am a bit bothered by how he kind of left AU high and dry as to recruiting. Not sure what all went down between him & the admin but do feel like he should have maybe left sooner rather than sleepwalk through his job. I hope he does well at Tech though. WDE and thanks for the undefeated season.

as i've said. ttu better get ready for the brakes to be put on their high powered offense. tubs will pull the plug on that after the first 4-5 INT game they lose. i'll believe tubs and offense can exsist together for more than one year when i see it. he'll always be AU to me even if he stays at ttu 20 years.

Chip ..there is hope: We can count on the Bammers themselves to self destruct. Right now Saban has control of the Bammer Nation similar to the Bahr. It's a different world now though. Bammer has many more sidewalk fans that contribute financially. These new folks are short-sighted and will meltdown as soon as $aban slips a little.

I also had some friends that played football and they did not care for him before the jetgate they said it was like he was to good to talk to them everything went through their pos. coach after jetgate he was different for about two or three years(undefeated season) he got into pratice and worked with the guys then back to his old self

tubs said himself the life span of a coach in the sec is about 5-6 years at best. AU's biggest problem was tubs peaked the year after he rightfully should have been gone. he was able to get a large contract that really didn't mean anything to him.

i still believe the hugh nall oc hire is a big reason why AU is where it is today. without the sorry 2003 with all that nfl talent, jetgate would probably not have happened. it is now obvious to me that tubs & co. coasted from 06 on the recruiting trail. he had most of us duped by his track record of turning two stars into five stars. he just wasn't getting the known quantities anymore. when $aban and meyer showed up, he had his pants around his ankles quickly.

MLF ...I'm torn about Tubs also. He obviously got tired of fighting the PTB interference and gave up when the Frankin experiment didn't work.

The paranoia and suspicion caused by the PTB interference took it's toll and he gave up.

I fault him for not just walking away. Instead. he stuck it to the PTB and thus AU. He collected $5 mil and agreed to not write a book. This protected the PTB and screwed AU.

We lost several important players because of this situation. This situation was caused by the actions of the PTB and Tubs reaction. Tubs left. The PTB has been weakened by the Colonial Bank bankruptcy and subsequent federal investigations, but they are still on the Board of Trustees.

Will we see these type issues arise at AU again? My guess is that it depends on the results of the Federal investigations into Colonial Bank. The folks I know say that the Feds will get the underlings, but not the head figure at Colonial Bank. If that's the case, then AU fans should not be surprised to once again see bizarre/clandestine football meddling from the PTB.

getting rid of nall, ensminger and knox would have been addition by subtraction. your staff is instantly better even if the trainers take over for a few weeks. i could not beleive we even heard anthony dixon's name much less him gaining 1K yards with knox as his coach @ msu. those are three phone numbers i'm sure tubs has misplaced when he starts calling potential assistants.

The good news right now is that all AU folks are on the same page. There are no undercurrents and the force being created is formidable.

Bama won't stay on top for long. The world changes at a much faster pace than years ago. Parity in the SEC will not all of a sudden go away. Teams may win a couple of championships within a few years, but as soon as that happens things will change.

Laziness and excessive duckhunting were spin put out by the PTB. He duck hunted for 2 days during the dead period between the Bama game and the SECCG.

I now regularly read rumors that he duck hunted for 1-3 weeks just prior to NSD.

it seemed if you wanted a AU offer the last few years, you better show up at their summer camps. that means we didn't recruit the guy in nc or la or tx that was not willing to drive 5-10 hours for a one or two day camp.

i think tub's neck issues seriously impacted his willingness/ability to travel long distances on a constant basis as required in recruiting. chiz has been to tx, ca, fl and everywhere under the sun getting players.

Over the past 10 years I've known and been involved with a lot of kids that have been recruited for Football and Baseball. Kids need and appreciate the dead period breaks from pressure.

Some kids respond to the incesssant attention and some kids rebuke it. The notion that more attention is better is just internet legend.

For example ..the best HS OL player out of the state of Ga for the past decade went to the school where the coach respected his wishes for minimal contact.

Tubs definitely got stuck in an old school way of recruiting and may have even been too hung up on character issues.

The notion that he was lazy was part of the spin put out by the PTB.

The player/recruit attrition that caused this season's depth problems was a result of: TUB's apathy, TUB's firing and PTB intereference chasing off recruits.

It would be very naive to think that all of the other schools in the SEC didn;t bring up the AU PTB hate for
Tubs to potential recruits.

Tubs had to swim against a current caused by the PTB his last 4 years at AU.

hoopie

one more time who did the PTB chase off anyone who jumped ship the new staff picked up better kids in a short amount of time and you talk to players and people not the so called PTB that knew him and they would tell you he was a ceo coach and would let the other coaches do the work call it what you want I call it lazy someone who does nothing is lazy

A CEO is what I look for in a head coach, so the comment seems kind of strang.

I also wouldn't put all the blame on the PTB either. Tuberville played his roll. Too many people want to look for a specific cause when there were numerous issues.

As for recruiting, they did very well until 2008. The 2009 class was looking good until CTT left and it fell apart. ChizCo did the best they could, but that class had glaring weaknesses. Some of the high profile commits that may have excited some aren't exactly as outstanding as they were thought to be. That isn't knocking ChizCo. They did a good job with a bad situation.

As for this recruiting class, unless something changes, it looks to be the best recruiting class I have seen at Auburn.

12:12 AM

As Hoopie said, the outworked thing is a myth thrown out for people that are naive enough to believe it.

12:13 AM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

See I like a coach that works with the players that know where and when a player is going on the field before he does it. down in the 4qt. with 2 min.to go I want the head coach to be in the mix doing what he does coach not stand behind the plaayers and try to see whats going on. Tubs was a lurker in the games go back and look at the last few years. if thats what you want thats cool but not me

12:16 AM

steve I have been there and seen him outworked itg happened all I am saying is I hope he does not get out worked at TTU

And no, the new staff was not able to replace what was lost. It isn't their fault. It is just the nature of a coaching change.

The real blame was the atmosphere created at Auburn and that is not just the fault of Tuberville or the PTB. Both had a hand in it and you can throw Pat Dye in there too.

The thing to do is look to the future and a better environment. There have been a lot of changes. Lowder isn't what he once was. Jacobs had done a decent job. There is a new president.

And I do think Chizik has pretty good people skills. While some may get irritated because of him holding his cards close to his chest, he seems very wise to me. You don't play them until you need to.

12:17 AM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

I love chizik and the way he works I also think it is wise I also feel like he knows what play is being called and he knows what each player is to do before it happens

12:20 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I prefer a coach that lets his coordinators do their job. That is one of my knocks on Tuberville. Franklin should have been able to make the offensive decisions and should have been judged by the result. I don't know for certain, but the impression I got was that Tuberville was sticking his nose in and that is why things turned into such a mess. The wise thing would have been to let Franklin do his job as he saw fit and evaluate him at the end of the season. Firing him in the middle just made matters worse. We went from an inconsistent offense to a predictable offense that was basically going to ensure you didn't loose too bad. I don't know if Franklin could have done better, but the way our offense became, we basically didn't give ourselves a chance to improve.

12:21 AM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

The franklin deal was that tubs stuck his nose in on his boys side and never gave franklin the chanceif nall and the rest said no they did not do it

12:24 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am sure Chizik is aware as Tuberville of what was going on, but I doubt he meddles with the offense at all.

As for the defense, I am sure he and Roof had discussions of how best to handle the depth situation.

Some people were upset when Chizik was hired and even wanted Muschamp instead. In my book, Chizik has a much better temperament for being a head coach than Muschamp.

I do think that Iowa State did so well this season because of what Chizik did there. He decided to play young players and develop some experience that would return. It seems to have worked out well for them. Iowa State will likely never be a powerhouse, but they aren't the joke they had been.

12:26 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I believe you are right, bigdaddy. Which is one of the mistakes I think Tuberville made. I just don't believe in this blame everything on one person mentality.

I don't know if we would have been better off with CTT or not. A lot would have depended upon him making some difficult changes.

I do know that Chizik appears to have made some very good decisions. It is just hard to tell at this point how long it will last. As with Lebo, we have to give him 4 or 5 years and see. I expect some fall off in 2011 when 4 offensive linemen graduate, but if we are contending for the west in 2012 and 2013, I would call it a success.

12:29 AM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

again I love the chizik and what he does but three names that pop in my head that dont meddle untill it is time ie. game on the line is meyer, spurrier, and I hate to say it bc I dont like him but saban. They know when to make the call with out meddling thats what I like a hands on coach.

Yes hoopie. It was PTB that floated Tub's name to Arkansas and A&M. Every year they would tell Sexton to offer Tubs to every open program...so they can renegotiate contract and give him a raise.

They hated their money.

I do know Chizik and Taylor have been working with the special teams, basically helping Boulware. Our punt return team was the worst that I can remember. I can never remember another season where I was just hoping the returner would catch the ball.

That is what excites me the most about next season. I can see our defense and special teams being much improved. The offense will likely be as good or better once the QB gets some playing time.

There is just a lot to like about this team.

By the way, the 2009 was very unique. No, they weren't one of our best teams, but they will be one of the most memorable. I do think the coaches did a great job of getting everything they could out of them and you have to respect the effort those players gave.

12:39 AM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

I had a old school coach tell me that a great coach could get their plays to do anything for the and each other. They would run into a wall if the coach told them to. I felt like this staff had the guys feeling that way they would do anything for the coaches to help the team. playing like a family and thats what I loved

Good morning, Hot Ones! Hubby sick so we did not go to church today. Slept late which is a treat. I have done Pilates, abs, heavy weights and my bosu ball today. I feel great, but worn out!

I guess the rest of the recruits we are after are going to wait until signing day to announce? Would love to hear from some this week to counter all the walmartian stuff I will hear.

You are on the right track. Keep your balance and flex foremost in your exercise reg. See your GP at least once a year. Have eye and dental exams as required and try to keep a healthy, happy attitude at all times. Yes THT. I have interest only in San Francisco mint coins, either silver or pennys. Don't ask me why SF mint coins, I just started out that way and have continued in that mode.
