Your Friday Thread

Hey everyone. I am in Kentucky handling some family business, which means my ability to blog is essentially zero.

I'm on dial-up. Forgive the blog's rough appearance.

I'll soon begin writing a story for Sunday about the Tigers' 2010 signing class. Should I deem it an overall success? Yeah, probably.

For the guy who emailed and ripped me for covering the "negative" news associated Marcus Lattimore, let me break some news: The sun doesn't shine every day. Look out the window.

Feel free to comment about whatever strikes your fancy.

Have a nice day.

A quick search enabled me to remember the Daphne OL's name: Atlas Herrion.

The abortive AU signing ceremony and his subsequent signing with the Tide was in December 2000. A little digging produced this classic quote from the archives:

Junior-college signee Atlas Herrion said many schools - "almost every last one of them" - told him Alabama will likely go on NCAA probation.

Asked which school used the most negative tactics, Herrion replied, "Auburn."

"They were telling me, 'You don't want to go over there, they're probably going to go on probation and they don't even know who their coach is,'" said Herrion, a Daphne native who signed last fall and enrolled in January. "They were just spreading rumors and everything else."

"If I really thought they'd put us on probation," Herrion said, "I wouldn't have come myself. I think it's just speculation. I don't see us going on probation any time soon - or any time, period."

Agreed 100% Faker. . .its' only wrong when someone else's school does it!

I echo the sentiment expressed on the previous page: why even HAVE a big announcement ceremony like this, when NSD is still 360+ days away?

That said, he looks/sounds like a pretty good prospect - here's hoping his word is his bond (this time)!

A comment from Region from earlier this fall:

"I grew up an Alabama fan. I love Alabama," Region told Scout.com in October. "I have always hoped one day I will get to wear the crimson and white. It will hurt if I don't get to do that. Alabama is my overall favorite. I feel at home there. I love it down there. I have been going down there for so many years that I just feel comfortable."

Fast Forward to today..

“At Auburn, I know they have my best interest in mind. I don’t think that was the case at the other place. That’s why I changed my mind and me and my family are happy with my decision.”

Something tells me that there is no chance that he and UA end up together...at...all.

If his heart is truly at UA, he'll probably wind up there. I suspect he realized that the reality did not match his dream.

If he wants to be an AG major, he really needs to be at a land grant school.

4:08 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't think there is any way he ends up at UA now. Maybe he goes somewhere else, but I doubt Saban would take him after this stunt.

I am kind of baffled at how he describes growing up an Alabama fan. If Alabama had offered me a full ride scholarship to play football, no way I could have taken it. No, nobody offered me a scholarship:)

4:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There's nothing unusual about someone growing up a fan of one school and ending up at the other, either because they don't get the offer or because they decide it's the wrong fit.

It's the timing on this one that seems strange, there was no evidence of wavering ahead of time.

4:22 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

I actually did get a scholly offer to Bama - a partial ride for academics. They were trying to build up their engineering school. I went to Auburn and ended up teaching there (and later UGa).

Separate subject - Alabama needs a board of regents to keep schools from developing competing programs.

4:24 PM
Blogger CHB said...

This may get me banned, but I grew up a UA fan. When you are growing up you don't get to make your own choices. Things are forced on you. It started when I was very little and I just stayed a fan. As I got older and closer to graduating HS I began looking into Auburn. I visited both places with friends and really loved Auburn. So that is where I went. I can't put it into words but I quickly bought into everything Auburn. There is just something about that place.

When I got to AU in 1998 we were not good at football or basketball, but something took hold of me and I have been AU all the way ever sense. I can't believe I was ever a fan of the enemy, but like I said I didn't have a choice.

Point is I can see where Region is coming from. It may have happened a little differently for him, but I am positive if he spends anytime on campus he will never look back. I haven't.

Forgive this long post, but I told Cincy that I would share my engagement story with her. I will make it as short as possible. This story is just one of many reason I am AU all the way.

Keep in mind that my wife was in the AU Choir.

It was the December after we graduated so we still had friends that lived in Auburn. My wife knew I was a huge sports fan. That made it easy to come up with my plan. I told her that we had a bb game on Saturday and I wanted us to go down for the weekend and stay with my friend Chris. She doesn't follow sports that closely so she didn't know that the bb team was actually out of town that weekend. I did not have my plan fully in place, but I knew it would involve Aubie. I had already made several phone calls and was connected to one of the students that played Aubie. We get to Auburn that Friday night and hang out like normal. I tell her that the next day Chris and I are going to go Christmas shopping (a lie). So the next day my plan begins to unfold. While he and I are out buying some wine I come up with the idea to tell her that the AU Choir will be singing Christmas Carols in front of Samford Hall. I contact Aubie and inform him of my plan.

Saturday night arrives and we go to Hamilton's. During dinner I tell her that while "Christmas Shopping" I saw a flyer for the Choir and she was really excited about hearing them sing. We finish dinner a little early so we walk to get ice cream (in December, so my plan had a couple of flaws). She seems to be getting a little suspicious at this time, but I keep the conversation going and throw her off. After ice cream we head over to Samford hall. We are the only ones there. So she is getting anxious and ready to leave because she thinks I misread the flyer (you know the one I made up). I tell her to lets wait a few more minutes.

About 5 minutes later Aubie comes walking from the dark with a Santa hat on and a toy bag over his shoulder. I had told her that he would be there for the kids. He walks directly to us and does a little dance. He then points at me to reach in the bag. I pull out a package that turns out to be an Aubie bobble head doll. He points to my wife to do the same. He present was a little nicer than mine. She pulls out her ring! I then get down on one knee and in front of Samford Hall and Aubie I propose. We were all bundled up because it was freezing and our tears (of joy) seemed to be sticking to our face.

Aubie was thoughtful enough to have his girlfriend hide in the bushes to get pictures, but they didn't turn out because it was too dark. We did get a picture of us an Aubie. My mother-in-law had that picture at our wedding and all of our friends and family wrote nice messages on it. It is now framed and hanging in my Auburn rooom.

Or so the post count says.

My journey to Auburn started with a letter from bama. They were offering me a full ride to come, I decided I would go visit and thought I would go to see Auburn also since one of my good friends was going there. I also visited UGA, Emory, Berry and maybe a couple more on the same trip.

I didn't like the small schools, but really liked UGA when I visited. I had already been to pretty much all of the schools in Florida, and FSU was the leader but I didn't love it. I got to Auburn and just fell in love, the scholarship Alabama offered me was much better than what Auburn offered but I had no question which school I'd rather be at.

It came down to getting paid to go in state (FSU) where most of my friends were or the school that I loved. I didn't decide until the deadline, but I obviously chose Auburn.

Something interesting I found about chrome this afternoon is that chrome operates each tab as a separate "instance" of the program. When you open up the task manager, you see chrome.exe running x amount of times, where x is the number of windows open. I know Firefox and explorer just run one instance, dunno which ends up being more efficient. But I think that's why chrome runs quicker than firefox (in my experience.)

i may be breaking HABOTN protocol or something, but folks need to see what our coaches are doing.
andrew bone wrote this for scout.com. he is the epitome of bammer influenced "media". the comments from mr. region are compelling as well.

Spencer Region, offensive guard from Cullman, Ala., gave a private commitment to the University of Alabama on Tuesday and reconfirmed his commitment to the Tide Friday night. Region surprised more than 100 spectators, most in Alabama attire, when he announced his de-commitment and commitment to Auburn.

"After a sudden change of events I am officially de-committing from Alabama and giving my commitment to Auburn," said Spencer Region. "A few things have happened in the last couple of hours I am not at liberty to talk about, but I am happy to be an Auburn Tiger.

"I committed to Alabama on Tuesday. I told Nick Saban I was coming there. He was really excited about my decision. I started thinking about my decision on the way to my press conference and just didn't feel comfortable with it."

Region spoke with Scout.com Saturday morning prior to his press conference telling the reasons why he would announce for Alabama at noon. He also informed Scout.com to release the story at noon, but had a last second change of heart.

"I apologize for giving you my commitment story this morning," Region said. "I was committed to Alabama, and that's where I believed I was going. I had planned to come here today to announce my commitment to Alabama. I spoke to Auburn on my way over here and felt more wanted by them.

"I chose Auburn because it's a real nice place and nice campus. I know they had my best interest at heart. I love them, and they love me. They have done a lot for me. I feel like Auburn is back and hope I made a big splash in this recruiting class.

"I slept on it last night and thought about it this morning. I spoke to coach Grimes this morning. He did not pressure me and told me to do what makes me happy. I am happy, and my family is happy. I feel like I am going to be successful. I know when I am at Auburn we will win the SEC.

"I probably decided about 11:30 a.m. I wasn't going to Alabama. I didn't feel at home. I didn't feel like they were my family. I went with what had my best interest at heart. I went with Auburn.

"My family and I talked about it. They are happy with my decision. Football is a great sport, but without your family you have nothing. Auburn really preaches family, and they are going to take care of you. That's what I am all about."

Region will also take a look around at other schools who may have his best interest at heart before signing day in Februaty of 2011.

"I will take my visits," he stated. "That was a big thing. Auburn is encouraging me to take my visits. They want me to visit as long as I stay committed, and I plan on doing that. I am going to Florida State February 20 and Ole Miss February 12."

we still may have to fight some others for him in the future, but i don't think bammer will be one of them. he didn't leave too much wiggle room to go back to the cousin humpers with some of his comments about how bammer pressured him and took him for granted.

Blogger weagle251 said...

My thoughts exactly, Feng.

It's way too early in the year to actually expect him to be around by next Signing Day, but you can't help but laugh at how that went down. The best bammer explanation I've heard is that he knew all along that he was going to Auburn, but played the media in order to embarrass Nick Saban.

Feng always has something profound to say.

The kid had a dream. He was offered a chance to fulfill that dream and jumped on it. Once he thought about, he realized that fulfilling that dream was neither what was best for him nor what he really wanted.

Rough weekend for the Penguins. They lost late yesterday afternoon in Montreal, had to fly to Newark and take a 5 hour bus ride to get to D.C. They arrived at their hotel at 2:15 a.m. and play the best team in the league at noon. This will not be pretty.... except maybe for AU1N04 and NoVa.

GO PENS!!!

Good Sunday morning, Hotties!

I just read chip chip's post from midnight last night. What in the world could have happened just a couple of hours from his announcement? That comment just raises more questions. I want to believe that the truth is that UAT pressured him too much and took him for granted and that Auburn welcomed him into the family with open arms with no pressure, but...

Well, it's time to head to church!

Ummm... We're still under a state of emergency. Very little is moving other than plows. Metro is running only below ground.

More snow is expected Tuesday night.

They're actually going to play a hockey game with almost no fans present?

I guess they figure if the other team can get to the arena from another country, the local fans should be able to get there, too.

The more I read comments about and from Region I think his decision came down to one simple thing. He feels more comfortable with Auburn. They didn't pressure him to commit and they didn't pressure him end the recruiting process completely. $horty's attitude and approach may finally be catching up to him. The walmartians will still recruit well, but I think their dominance is over.

I really like how are coaches are preaching and selling recruits on family. Family is what Auburn is based on and that is what we are known as a fan base.

9:14 AM
Blogger Miller said...

It really was a case of being more comfortable...
AU didn't pressure him like Saban did... he didn't expect that, and it threw him for a loop. That made him realize that one side really only thought of him as a mercenary, while the other side would treat him like family. Which side would you choose?

There are always two or three that are hilarious. I also want to see the Tebow commercial. People can make all the jokes they want, but no one in their right mind can say he isn't one of the best young men ever to play the game of football. If anyone was curious, I read this in the (Atlanta) paper this morning.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/cobb-man-not-peyton-291197.html

The guy who plays the Colts mascot was Aubie back in 2003. He's a year-round employee and basically visits children's hospitals/schools. In addition to spending time with sick kids, he got a Super Bowl ring from 06, married a Colt's cheerleader and gets to lead the Colts onto the field this evening.

I'm jealous.

depends on which Colts cheerleader he married... some might make me more jealous than others.

Blogger wtc said...

Get ready folks. The end of times are coming very soon. I just read an opinion piece that stated the Birmingham News was slanted to giving positive stories to AU and just short articles on UA. UA fans were requested to boycott the B'ham News because of writers like Goldberg were so pro AU. They went on to say how they would prefer to get their sports news form Cecil Hurt. Yeah, I think he is all about fair and balance. 'If UA wants Shon Coleman they can get at anytime' That Cecil Hurt.

1:35 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

wtc, I. have lived in the Bham area for over 11 years and the Bham News is definitely not slanted toward Auburn. That's why it has the nickname "Bammerham News." Even FSJ calls it that. The bammers are just pissed off because for the first time in a VERY LONG time Auburn is being talked about because Chizik and Co. did such an outstanding job recruiting this year. That's just not supposed to happen, don'cha know!
