Auburn gets its first 2010 commitment
Hey everyone. I have risen from slumber to learn that cornerback Izauea Lanier (first name is pronounced "eye-ZAY-uh") has committed to play football at Auburn in 2011.
He is the first player on earth to do so.
We know about this because our friends at AuburnSports.com and ITAT say so. And they're credible.
Lanier signed with the Tigers in 2009 out of Gordo High. He was a late addition to the class, a diamond-in-the-rough guy whose stock was severely affected by his questionable academic status. So he spent the past fall at East Mississippi Community College, is working to get his marks in order and played well enough to keep Auburn coaches interested.
He is expected to redshirt this fall and arrive in 2011 with three years of eligibility remaining.

gowake
the wheel is turnin' and you can't slow down
Hidley-ho neighbor.
Great news!
Thanks for answering my question in the previous thread, Eddie. Well, I never paid one iota of attention to these rankings until yesterday. I think since there is such disparity, I will go back to not caring about them and just be excited that Auburn is finally getting some POSITIVE national attention.
Big day for me, and starting it off with a first post means nothing but good is coming.
Lets get the commitment train rolling....
Apparently our rival feels somewhat threatened by our recruiting success and is planning on getting the commitment started and rolling early. Expect 2 big commitments for them this week and they are putting the pressure on for even more.
Hopefully he'll be an early signee and be in class by next Jan.
Great addition to this team for 2011. Even better that he has 3 years to play 3. Looks like he will enroll in December.
You have the depth chart for spring yet?
Great job yesterday JayG.
A new thread announcing the radio spot will run at 8:15 a.m.
Once the radio show ends, I will delete that thread so that Lanier remains the headline item.
I will be driving toward Kentucky today and not around the blog as much. It's an unavoidable situation.
Thanks, wtc!
Jay G, after your stellar performance yesterday, I think we can cut you a break on driving to Kentucky.
Well, I am unpacked, washed clothes, and repacked for my trip to Fairhope and The Grand Hotel. I will eat an omelet for everyone (but you will have to share, I can't eat that many omelets!) and will try the grits. :)
Currently all of Alabama from B'ham south is raining! Hope it will clear off for the weekend.
It's great to be an Auburn Tiger! (And I would hate to be all those 5*s who committed to USCw when the NCAA shoe drops.)
We set a record for blog traffic yesterday. We were between 20% and 30% higher than our previous high-water mark, which came the day Tuberville quit/was fired/cashed out.
Thanks!
Eddie-That just everyone a LONG time negative recruit against them. Since they don't do that (yeah right) maybe they should just wait a little bit before announcing.
$5 says Shane goes on Fbomb and brags they have the #1 class in the nation for 2010 after next week. Someone that listens let me know.
Luv- I think they are important in the fact that you need to be mentioned at the top with the best teams in the country if you are going to succeed on the national stage. Where you finish from 1-5 is not that much of a difference, but there is a huge difference in being 19th instead of 5th. Recruiting ranking services are now a huge booming business and they have over doubled the amount of analysts that they had from just 5 years ago so the rankings are more truer today than they were back then. They are not going to be right on every player, but I'm betting they are closer now than they have ever been, so finishing Top 5 is a huge deal IMO. If you want to beat the best, you have to have the best talent, pure and simple. Bama and Texas have been top 5 teams for the most part in the rankings along with Florida.
Eddie the phrase should be 'that gives everyone a long time'.
WTC- I agree and there are 2 negatives in that method, the one you mentioned and...what happens if they are not as good as you thought?
Bama doesn't celebrate recruiting hauls from what I have been told...of course, I think they were wearing a Recruiting National Championship shirt from 2008 when they said that.
AU had one spot open for this class. I wonder if this kid will take that spot.
Also, for those that Read Finebuam, I want the article he said that Auburn would never beat Saban in recruiting. His journalism (I say that with sarcastism) skills are laughable at best.
That last spot is for Sentrieal Henderson when USC gets the death penalty notice on February 19th, since he didn't sign is LOI yet. :)
"He is the first player on earth to do so."
nice.
WTC, I was under the impression that we only got to carry over any of the left over 25 scholarship spots that we had, not the 28 signing spots.
Am I wrong?
WTC,
I heard Saban's presser yesterday. He sounded a little irritated despite having a really good class.
If somebody says "we don't negative recruit," isn't that really an example of negative recruiting?
I'm sure Saban was all positive when trying to convince Coleman at the last minute to switch to the tide.
One guy I don't like anymore is Rodney Gardner. He may have played here, but he flat out negative recruits against us.
who dat?
I can't hate on RG for doing his job the best way he knows how.
RG has a grudge / axe to carry out against Auburn. He is pretty much barred from ever working here. I can understand it, but he does not like Auburn.
That's funny that he's barred from working for someone who he turned down working for...is that anything like pulling offers after a kid commits elsewhere, then saying "he was never really someone we wanted."
What up people? The weather sucks, the Outlook calendar is slammed but today is a good day.
Morning Hot Ones and War Eagle!
You know as difficult as it may be for the media folks around the country to admit, maybe, JUST maybe, Gene Chizik knows what the hell he's doing.
Never say never. Willis could end up at AU again one fine day.
Some ideas for Auburn's last scholly. These are some of the more prominent unsigned players courtesy of Mr. SEC:
Anterio Sloan, DB
DeVonta Bolton, ILB
Michael Lindsey, WR
Pee Wee Cobb, DB
Risean Broussard, DT
Eric Watson, RB
Marc Gooch, WR
Julian Burton, WR
Quan Weaver, RB
Sybhrain Berry, DB
Claude Johnson, QB/ATH
Antonio Harding, OLB
Thamail Morgan, LB
Jonathan Frazier, WR
Brandon Smith, RB
Darius Hudson, DT
Mitchell Roberts, ILB
Rodney Garner once stated that he wanted his kids to go to Auburn. They may be old enough now? I think he and tater tot poured gas on the bridges, lit the match, and called in an air strike on the rubble. But, I don't get the feeling that Rodney had anything against Auburn.
Now for Willis, I'll donate the bullet.
JGT says..
"He is the first player on earth to do so"
I spit up my coffee!!!!
JG deletes HATE thread from the road. good work.
I didn't know WTH happened!
On forgiveness of wayward types (like Bammers and Sensi -- just kiddin', bro), Peter (the Apostle, not Frankenschmidt) posted the question of how many times are we to forgive. Seven times, he asked?
The response was shocking: We are to forgive seventy times seven.
The good news is most UAT fans, using their ciphering skills, think the maximum number of forgivenesses they can receive is 140.
What happened to the Radio thread?
pf, i considered changing my avatar on one of the pay sites to that exact ptm pic this morning before i saw yours. creeepy.
i got the gun api. now we need some AU engineer to build an evil robot to do the deed.
i say wait on some surprise greyshirts to happen elsewhere and see what players become available. otherwise, there is no need to sign another this year.
Go Chiz Co.
It's never a bad thing to have one scholly in the bank.
JG deleted radio thread to give just due to the thread honoring AU's first commit to the 2011 class.
Eddie, I keep reading your posts with Apu's accent.
Please do not offer my god a peanut.
Road deletion = exercising supreme authority.
LOL Scott C.
I'm raising the prices on all my thoughts from worthless to worth nothing.
APU = the simpsons?
and here I was thinking everyone at Azusa Pacific University spoke with some left coast accent.
Nickel off on expired baby food.
Homer: Are you sure you don't want to come? In a Civil War re-enactment we need lots of Indians to shoot.
Apu: I don't know what part of that sentence to correct first, but I cannot come.
I wonder how many recruits receive stars and recognition because they are being recruited by USCw, Fla, Texas, Ala, and such early in the process?
Then keep adding stars as the recruiting season progresses.
Does this bias the Rivals, Scout and ESPN rankings. Thus puting other programs at a disadvantage from the start.
No basis for this rant just wondering
When does spring practice start?
Out to check on some buildings. Will check back this afternoon. Safe travels Jay G.
how much star bias is there for players from the "hotbed" of recruiting? Do kids in New Jersey get the same attention as kids in Florida, Texas, or California? I seriously doubt it. Dion Lewis of Pitt only received 3* rating from Scout and Rivals.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/ncaa/02/03/clemson.commitment.lb.ap/
Sorry I don't know how to link the article correctly. Maybe someone can help me out with that. It's about Clempson but it's still a good read.
article
I agree with Jay G's assessment on the radio this morning...I'm getting much more interested in recruiting over the last year or so. The story lines behind the rankings are entertaining.
Also I think we can all see that there is a direct correlation between recruiting well and playing well..
I know some coaches can "coach up" 2-3 stars to compete with four stars, but all things considered give me the 4-5 star versus the other guy's 2-3 star kid any day of the week.
Now if only I can get wtc's mom to start following recruiting.
crap..should say now if I can only get wtc's mom to start following UA recruiting.
Now your just showing off THT.
Dabo is a little goofy...and probably not a very good HC but he is a good guy...and has a pretty good story of his own to share.
The coaches at Gadsden City raved about his abilities as a recruiter. One asked me why Saban didn't hire him on his initial staff. My reply was that Dabo didn't have much of a reputation as an on the field coach. The reply was well hire him and assign a GA to help him with the on the field stuff. They thought he was that good on the recruiting trail.
@ Jet's 9:44 am post
I don't need forgiveness. I've done nothing wrong.
It's ok Sensi...
If it gets too rough on the Orange and Blue side...we'll save a seat on the dark side for you.
Just about cried on the Clemson article when it mentioned how he clutched the jersey to his face with his good arm! WOW!
Jet, I think leaving the "g" off of "kidding" confused Sensi.
hypothetically, if Michigan fires RR with cause, would that leave RR on the hook for the 1.5 million still owed to WVU? And would UM sue for the 2.5 million they've already paid?
Someone clue me in on why everyone is giving Sensi crap.
of course, the above has nothing to do with the $3.9 MILLION that Rich Rodriguez allegedly owes a bank for allegedly defaulting on a loan for a condo development.
CH=B
I know the article is a great story, but I just can't get past it that Clemson is trying to make up for the way they handled the Ray Ray story
Ray Ray
i think i'd have trouble concentrating on winning football games, too.
Doesn't seem they could fire him and sue him for the money, who knows? I'm stoked over the first year on the job by CGC, maybe the national media will give him some love when we stomp a mud hole in tuscaloosa this year. Write. It. Down.
I think it's because he's the resident contrarian, CH=B.
so where is Ray Ray now?
i call my cat ray ray, he has no neck so i call him ray ray of no-neckia.
Just found where he (Ray Ray) transferred to Howard and got his degree.
Ok Bin....I have it written down.. :-P
norm...
what is this "some" of which you speak?
Not as applicable since you changed your pic, but neat anyway...
The enemy of the platypus is man.
-Norm
Jay G. Tate MA article with some Luper quotes.
article in MA (not by JGT) about AU signee Kenneth Carter
I realize stories about your kids are often tedious for others, but...
My 7 yr old daughter brought home some freestyle art she did in class yesterday. It was all Auburn with tigers, eagles, etc. The best part was 2 hypnotized eyes, a pocket-watch on a chain and "You do not go for Alabama. Alabama is evil". I got a kick out of it.
I see where the #1 lineman says he wants to USC but is not sending his papers in until after the NCAA hearing USC has to go through.
Awesome ehyou.
smart young man
BEASLEY!!!
ehyou, she didn't learn that from you, did she? ;-) I love it, btw!
WTC- He is a wise man.
I think they also have two JUCO players that are waiting.
Maybe that is the situation Chizik alluded to yesterday when he said if a situation that was out of the ordinary came up we still have a spot available?
Excellent article, Jay G! These are exciting times for the Auburn football program!
Thanks for the link, Tar Heel!
That is a great article JGT. I like that all the really good stuff is on page 2.
poor Michael
I tried it again. I knew it wouldn't work, but I just thought... maybe today it would? Nope. Nothing happens when I click to go to the next page. They are canceling my work and not letting me look at the second pages of writer Tate's articles. What more can they do to me?
Could this be some of us...(sub Habotn for pics)

michael, they could give you a raise and make you feel obligated to stay there and be miserable.
a raise + no work = much more HABOTN time... hey, might not be a bad deal.
Michael, do you have scripting turned off on your browser?

Luper sitting quietly in the dark room reflecting
"Something pretty special happened here today," Luper said. "We had a plan, a pretty ambitious plan, actually, and I can say that we made it work. We had needs, we filled needs and we got the kids we wanted. This program got better today."
Amen
Trovon Reed missed 5 games due to injury. Anyone know the scoop on the injury and recovery therefrom?
where did everyone go?

Still recovering from yesterday's soiree
Thanks for page 2, THT!
working my tail off. and it's not fun.
I got the job I've been after. I start on my birthday.
I'm obviously kinda excited.

congrats Wake
way to go Wakerider!
You know that this blog needs? Less tedious stories about people's kids.
I smell Bacon coming from Wake's direction all of the sudden.
Wake, when are you going to make the trip over and check out the doughnut shops?
Congrats indeed wake.
Interesting jimmy. Neat to read what they thought of the guys.
Chip Chip. that's funny. I was listening to some music the other night that reminded me of ren and stimpy, thus the avatar. I haven't thought of that show in years. I need to get really wasted and watch it tonigh.
PF...
I gotcha tedious story right here. Huh? Huh?
Getcha Some.
Good news Wake!
I don't know PF, I've already checked and there aren't any Krispy Kreme's in the whole county so that is a mjor let down. I'll definitely have to check it out. LOL
I'll have to be careful how often I eat, I'd hate to lose my figure.
THT,
Trovon Reed's injury was a knee injury. He has a strained MCL if I remember correctly. He returned at the end of the season and played in their last game or two. He also played in the All-Star game. He should be 100%.
Congrats Wake!
Wake is a KK snob. Me too!
D.Miller - thanks!
Thanks for the congrats.
Lets recap my day.
-I get the first post on this thread when I wake up.
-I get the job I've been after
-I just got reminded that I get a free massage this afternoon.
I would say I've have had a pretty awesome day.
Wake ... congrats.
Now, for some excited stories about ElTurbo and Stewardess.
Make sure they're too long to skip without scrolling, Jet.
did I ever tell you about the time Molly dog...
Congrats Wake!
PF ... absolutely ... I haven't even written the chapters about the dog.
I can tolerate stories about kids, as long as they have cool nick names like El Turbo or F4*. If you try to tell me story about John or Samantha I'm going to get grumpy.
PF
Good news: Child #3 won school spelling bee.
Bad news: 2 Hours each night preparing for county contest.
Short enough for ya?
I'm down for a $100, Cup, if your child is asked to spell "infidel," and spells it "C-O-U-S-I-N-H-U-M-P-E-R."
My four year old niece said PF was a tool for cutting into her demographic's time on HABOTN.
It was the cutest thing.
Any story about kids and PF's toolitude gets a thumbs up from me.
Jet,
Pretty funny! Knowing him, he would. He's my 9 year old...slipped into the P.E. teachers office yesterday to check on recruiting. Both he and the teacher see things from an orange & blue perspective.
There should be nothing mentioned involving kids and PF's tool.
Just sayin
Wake...get your mind out of the gutter.
Sorry E Bro, that one just jumped out at me.
I'll try to do better.
Congratulations Wake best wishes on a new adventure.
As a grandpaw kids stories are always great.
No worries Wake.
Cup ...
Just remember the Good Book ...
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." -- Proverbs 22:6.
I saw this little blurb referencing a story told at the coaches dinner posted today...
"Trooper told the story of the coaches' last visit with Shon Coleman (at Olive Branch HS). He said they had scheduled their visit, and when they got there, walked around the corner and heard, " Hey, Gene. I didn't know you were going to be here." It was Saban. Trooper called back at him, "Yeah, because we SCHEDULE our visits!"
Wake, congratulations! No KK in the whole country? Where is this place and do you really want to live there? ;-)
I've always wondered how rival coaches get along. It doesn't sound like Chiz is to fond of little nicky.
Luv, It has made me reconsider. But growing up we didn't have one anywhere near us. I have discovered that Hot KK donuts are 5.7 times better after a road trip to get them.
The best KK's I've ever had were in Chattanooga. They were so hot, I could barely hold the box on my lap! They just literally melted in your mouth! MMMMMM!
Jet...
Odd that you bring up Provebs 22:6
My wife stated a prescool at our church years ago and built her program around that specific verse!
are we discussing Krispy Kreme's???
yummy. my fav is fudge iced/creme filled. sugar sweet, from my head to my feet!
Luv...I'm not a huge KK fan per say, but KK in the Noog on Brainerd Road after a couple of games of bowling at Holiday Bowl is usually a night well spent.
Dadgum you people. Now I'm craving KK! Somebody swing by the KK on Atl Hwy in the gump and see if the hot sign is flashing. If it is, will you grab me a dozen and bring them by my office? Please?
Dmiller-a friend that was there for that talk said the same thing. Said Saban was leaving out the back door because he did not have an appointment to see Coleman that day.
I recall it was Wednesday of last week as that was the day Chizik was there and Coleman was due to leave for UAt that afternoon for his official visit and was surprised to hear that Saban was there that day when Coleman was to be in UAt that evening. Turns out that Saban KNEW the coaches and would try to talk him out of coming for the visit. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but it shows that he is a sneaky sob. Then he tells his REC last night that he recruits by the rules. Well if you show up at a school w/o an appointment to see an athlete I think that is against the rules. Or maye he was there to see the principal and BUMPED into Coleman.
E-Bro, I don't know where this was. It was 10 years ago. All I remember is how hot and yummy they were! Any time we've had them since, we always say that they still aren't as good as the ones we had in Chattanooga.
Unfortunately, my favorite doughnut place no longer exists:
Price's Doughnuts in Prattville
I would pay top dollar for a Price's doughnut these days.
KK hot off the press in the circle city of Dothan, Alabama. Can't beat em'. A good cup of coffee their too!
Well, since we're on the subject, another great doughnut shop is Lamar's. They have one in Oxford, AL where the sales rep that brought them lives.
Luv...where I was talking about is the only place in Chattanooga where there is a Krispy Kreme, so it would definitely be the place you had them from.
There's a bowling alley right across the street and you don't go bowling there w/o stopping at Krispy Kreme afterwards.
Lamar's is good.
Looks like Jason Campbell will be on borrowed time... Kiper has the Skins drafting Sam Bradford.
Hey E-Bro,
I heard that the re opened the Yellow Deli in
Chatt. That was one of my favorite places to eat as a child. I loved the grilled cheese.
Jimmy...that is indeed true.
Drove by it just the other day, but haven't stopped in yet.
That sucks for Jason, but he hasn't been doing very well. He was probably on borrowed time anyway.
Price's in Montgomery had some good donuts when I was in college.
Unfortunately, the Yellow Deli has sort of a cult stigma.
Local paper ran a story a couple of years back about there being a cult at the place.
Here's the article
I can beat all of your Krispy Kreme stories.
I live in Alaska where there are no KK stores. However, a common fundraiser is for church and school groups to fly to Seattle, buy a car load of KK donuts and fly them back to Anchorage the same day. Folks will drive all the way across the city to buy cold KK donuts from Seattle.
Unbelievable.
The Donut King in Eufaula is the absolute best!
Now I am seriously craving donuts.
Shipley's has decent doughnuts.
My favorite donuts will always be Shipley's in Texas (from what I've heard they are in/have been in the bham area as well, but not as good). The only thing better than a shipley's donut is a shipley's kolache (sp?). If you've never had a kolache you are truly missing out.
Great minds think alike Scott.
And occaisionaly me and you do too.
I am located right between a KK and a Shipley's. I like both, but I actually go to Shipley's more often.
Now I want a kolache.
e-bro...
That is freaky and bizarre.
Thanks E-Bro,
Yeah, there was one in Dayton i would go to, the local Baptist church ran them out in the mid 80's.
I really liked their food and it had a great feel to it,
and always like to go there.
Hmmm, looks like the Shipley's down the road from me may be the only one in Alabama. I guess I like them because their doughnuts are about as close to Price's as I've come across.
ehyou...yep.
Like I said. Place has sort of a stigma attached to it now.
The comment about the Yellow Deli took me on a wonderful journey of discovery....take me to your leader!
haha!
OK, I finally finished the article you linked, E-Bro. (An old friend kept sending me messages on FB.) So the deli closed 20 years ago and the cult left town. Now they are back and reopened the deli in a different location. Is that correct? What made them come back?
I don't wanna cult. I just wanna a dozen of Krispy Kremes right off the conveyor.
Luv...I'm not exactly sure if the "cult" was the organization running it back in the day when it first closed anyway.
If so, I'm not sure what made them come back now.
Don't know an awful lot past what I read in this article.
RK may know more having spent some time at UTC.
LOL, Jet. It's been awhile, but on the rare occasion we get them, we always go in and ask for the ones that have just gone through the icing!
Ah yes, the Yellow Deli...
E-bro,
Would you believe I lived right behind the Chili's on Brainerd Road for over a year and never went to Krispy Kreme?
E-Bro, the article was a tad confusing. I couldn't tell when we were in modern-day and when we were 20 years ago.
Luv,
That's a good description of Chattanooga, hard to tell if we are modern day or 20 years ago.
THT-
I live in Louisiana and when I was at home over Thanksgiving break I caught up on HS playoffs. Trovon single handedly beat my alma mater's cross town rival in the playoffs. Threw for about 150 yards and a score, and ran for 200 more and two touchdowns. Whatever injury he had wasn't hindering him at that point. The corn dogs wanted him bad.
I don't recall the Yellow Deli being around when I was at UTC, but that was 98-00.
However I remember the article you sent and me and some friends from work were going to go check it out or lunch one day, but never got around to it.
I am not convinced they are a cult, I think they are some hippies that opened a few restaurants in the early 80's.
I think there is not one substantiated charge against them.
Mostly religious paranoia, but the stigma has stayed.
YellowDeli
Wiki
...mostly I just like their grilled cheese when I was 8
Paranoia may destroy ya.
They sound like a cult to me.
Cult
I just had my first professional massage ever. I want to know when my second is... it was awesome.
I think they're witches. Do they float or sink?
wake...
I have never seen a set-up so wide open.
haha, I do what I can to keep the blog entertaining... do what you must.
Do you feel like a wet noodle, Wake? I'd be ready for a nap!
almost flip time?
I'm excited bigdaddy. Flip time is 2nd behind a new blog entry.
where is everyone? I just got on looks slow
