Auburn gets its first 2010 commitment

Hey everyone. I have risen from slumber to learn that cornerback Izauea Lanier (first name is pronounced "eye-ZAY-uh") has committed to play football at Auburn in 2011.

He is the first player on earth to do so.

We know about this because our friends at AuburnSports.com and ITAT say so. And they're credible.

Lanier signed with the Tigers in 2009 out of Gordo High. He was a late addition to the class, a diamond-in-the-rough guy whose stock was severely affected by his questionable academic status. So he spent the past fall at East Mississippi Community College, is working to get his marks in order and played well enough to keep Auburn coaches interested.

He is expected to redshirt this fall and arrive in 2011 with three years of eligibility remaining.

Great news!

Thanks for answering my question in the previous thread, Eddie. Well, I never paid one iota of attention to these rankings until yesterday. I think since there is such disparity, I will go back to not caring about them and just be excited that Auburn is finally getting some POSITIVE national attention.

Lets get the commitment train rolling....

Apparently our rival feels somewhat threatened by our recruiting success and is planning on getting the commitment started and rolling early. Expect 2 big commitments for them this week and they are putting the pressure on for even more.

Great addition to this team for 2011. Even better that he has 3 years to play 3. Looks like he will enroll in December.

You have the depth chart for spring yet?

Great job yesterday JayG.

A new thread announcing the radio spot will run at 8:15 a.m.

Once the radio show ends, I will delete that thread so that Lanier remains the headline item.

I will be driving toward Kentucky today and not around the blog as much. It's an unavoidable situation.

Well, I am unpacked, washed clothes, and repacked for my trip to Fairhope and The Grand Hotel. I will eat an omelet for everyone (but you will have to share, I can't eat that many omelets!) and will try the grits. :)

Currently all of Alabama from B'ham south is raining! Hope it will clear off for the weekend.

It's great to be an Auburn Tiger! (And I would hate to be all those 5*s who committed to USCw when the NCAA shoe drops.)

Eddie-That just everyone a LONG time negative recruit against them. Since they don't do that (yeah right) maybe they should just wait a little bit before announcing.

$5 says Shane goes on Fbomb and brags they have the #1 class in the nation for 2010 after next week. Someone that listens let me know.

7:45 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Luv- I think they are important in the fact that you need to be mentioned at the top with the best teams in the country if you are going to succeed on the national stage. Where you finish from 1-5 is not that much of a difference, but there is a huge difference in being 19th instead of 5th. Recruiting ranking services are now a huge booming business and they have over doubled the amount of analysts that they had from just 5 years ago so the rankings are more truer today than they were back then. They are not going to be right on every player, but I'm betting they are closer now than they have ever been, so finishing Top 5 is a huge deal IMO. If you want to beat the best, you have to have the best talent, pure and simple. Bama and Texas have been top 5 teams for the most part in the rankings along with Florida.

7:45 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Eddie the phrase should be 'that gives everyone a long time'.

7:47 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

WTC- I agree and there are 2 negatives in that method, the one you mentioned and...what happens if they are not as good as you thought?

Bama doesn't celebrate recruiting hauls from what I have been told...of course, I think they were wearing a Recruiting National Championship shirt from 2008 when they said that.

WTC,

I heard Saban's presser yesterday. He sounded a little irritated despite having a really good class.

If somebody says "we don't negative recruit," isn't that really an example of negative recruiting?

I'm sure Saban was all positive when trying to convince Coleman at the last minute to switch to the tide.

I wonder how many recruits receive stars and recognition because they are being recruited by USCw, Fla, Texas, Ala, and such early in the process?
Then keep adding stars as the recruiting season progresses.
Does this bias the Rivals, Scout and ESPN rankings. Thus puting other programs at a disadvantage from the start.
No basis for this rant just wondering

I agree with Jay G's assessment on the radio this morning...I'm getting much more interested in recruiting over the last year or so. The story lines behind the rankings are entertaining.

Also I think we can all see that there is a direct correlation between recruiting well and playing well..

I know some coaches can "coach up" 2-3 stars to compete with four stars, but all things considered give me the 4-5 star versus the other guy's 2-3 star kid any day of the week.

Now if only I can get wtc's mom to start following recruiting.

The coaches at Gadsden City raved about his abilities as a recruiter. One asked me why Saban didn't hire him on his initial staff. My reply was that Dabo didn't have much of a reputation as an on the field coach. The reply was well hire him and assign a GA to help him with the on the field stuff. They thought he was that good on the recruiting trail.

I recall it was Wednesday of last week as that was the day Chizik was there and Coleman was due to leave for UAt that afternoon for his official visit and was surprised to hear that Saban was there that day when Coleman was to be in UAt that evening. Turns out that Saban KNEW the coaches and would try to talk him out of coming for the visit. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but it shows that he is a sneaky sob. Then he tells his REC last night that he recruits by the rules. Well if you show up at a school w/o an appointment to see an athlete I think that is against the rules. Or maye he was there to see the principal and BUMPED into Coleman.

E-Bro, I don't know where this was. It was 10 years ago. All I remember is how hot and yummy they were! Any time we've had them since, we always say that they still aren't as good as the ones we had in Chattanooga.

Unfortunately, my favorite doughnut place no longer exists:

Price's Doughnuts in Prattville

I would pay top dollar for a Price's doughnut these days.

KK hot off the press in the circle city of Dothan, Alabama. Can't beat em'. A good cup of coffee their too!

Well, since we're on the subject, another great doughnut shop is Lamar's. They have one in Oxford, AL where the sales rep that brought them lives.

Luv...where I was talking about is the only place in Chattanooga where there is a Krispy Kreme, so it would definitely be the place you had them from.

There's a bowling alley right across the street and you don't go bowling there w/o stopping at Krispy Kreme afterwards.

Lamar's is good.

Hey E-Bro,
I heard that the re opened the Yellow Deli in
Chatt. That was one of my favorite places to eat as a child. I loved the grilled cheese.

Blogger E-Bro said...

Jimmy...that is indeed true.

Drove by it just the other day, but haven't stopped in yet.

That sucks for Jason, but he hasn't been doing very well. He was probably on borrowed time anyway.

Price's in Montgomery had some good donuts when I was in college.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Deli has sort of a cult stigma.

Local paper ran a story a couple of years back about there being a cult at the place.

Here's the article

I can beat all of your Krispy Kreme stories.

I live in Alaska where there are no KK stores. However, a common fundraiser is for church and school groups to fly to Seattle, buy a car load of KK donuts and fly them back to Anchorage the same day. Folks will drive all the way across the city to buy cold KK donuts from Seattle.

Unbelievable.

Shipley's has decent doughnuts.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

My favorite donuts will always be Shipley's in Texas (from what I've heard they are in/have been in the bham area as well, but not as good). The only thing better than a shipley's donut is a shipley's kolache (sp?). If you've never had a kolache you are truly missing out.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Great minds think alike Scott.

And occaisionaly me and you do too.

I am located right between a KK and a Shipley's. I like both, but I actually go to Shipley's more often.

Now I want a kolache.

Thanks E-Bro,
Yeah, there was one in Dayton i would go to, the local Baptist church ran them out in the mid 80's.

I really liked their food and it had a great feel to it,
and always like to go there.

2:34 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Hmmm, looks like the Shipley's down the road from me may be the only one in Alabama. I guess I like them because their doughnuts are about as close to Price's as I've come across.

Like I said. Place has sort of a stigma attached to it now.

OK, I finally finished the article you linked, E-Bro. (An old friend kept sending me messages on FB.) So the deli closed 20 years ago and the cult left town. Now they are back and reopened the deli in a different location. Is that correct? What made them come back?

3:06 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't wanna cult. I just wanna a dozen of Krispy Kremes right off the conveyor.

3:14 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Luv...I'm not exactly sure if the "cult" was the organization running it back in the day when it first closed anyway.

If so, I'm not sure what made them come back now.

Don't know an awful lot past what I read in this article.

RK may know more having spent some time at UTC.

3:15 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

LOL, Jet. It's been awhile, but on the rare occasion we get them, we always go in and ask for the ones that have just gone through the icing!

3:15 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ah yes, the Yellow Deli...

E-bro,

Would you believe I lived right behind the Chili's on Brainerd Road for over a year and never went to Krispy Kreme?

3:16 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

E-Bro, the article was a tad confusing. I couldn't tell when we were in modern-day and when we were 20 years ago.

That's a good description of Chattanooga, hard to tell if we are modern day or 20 years ago.

THT-

I live in Louisiana and when I was at home over Thanksgiving break I caught up on HS playoffs. Trovon single handedly beat my alma mater's cross town rival in the playoffs. Threw for about 150 yards and a score, and ran for 200 more and two touchdowns. Whatever injury he had wasn't hindering him at that point. The corn dogs wanted him bad.

3:19 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I don't recall the Yellow Deli being around when I was at UTC, but that was 98-00.

However I remember the article you sent and me and some friends from work were going to go check it out or lunch one day, but never got around to it.

3:20 PM
Blogger Jimmy said...

I am not convinced they are a cult, I think they are some hippies that opened a few restaurants in the early 80's.

I think there is not one substantiated charge against them.

Mostly religious paranoia, but the stigma has stayed.
