Your Friday Thread

Hey everyone. I am in Kentucky handling some family business, which means my ability to blog is essentially zero.

I'm on dial-up. Forgive the blog's rough appearance.

I'll soon begin writing a story for Sunday about the Tigers' 2010 signing class. Should I deem it an overall success? Yeah, probably.

For the guy who emailed and ripped me for covering the "negative" news associated Marcus Lattimore, let me break some news: The sun doesn't shine every day. Look out the window.

Feel free to comment about whatever strikes your fancy.

Have a nice day.

we've got a WR from Montana on the roster, Jay Wisner, rising senior who transferred last year after JUCO, I think in California. I'd love to know how someone from Montana ended up in Auburn.

Correct Norm. Snow rates in thundersnow can exceed 4 inches an hour. I've only seen it once when I was little. That was a nor'easter too.

So Don Dunn & Steve Ensminger have rejoined a former AU HC in Lubbock, both in "administrative" roles, i.e. not on the field coaches.

Dunn says he loved his year at AHS and hopes to retire to Auburn.

His most interesting comment?
"Dunn said he notified the Auburn High coaches, administration and players of his decision Wednesday and Thursday.
'That was the first thing I did,' Dunn said. 'I contacted (head coach) Tim Carter, (athletic director) Clay McCall, talked to the players. I did it the right way. I told them before I told anybody.'"

THT ...

It's a little different leaving a HS to join a college staff -- especially after signing day. There's time to talk to the kids.

It's never easy on the college coach switching jobs -- it's almost always in the heat of recruiting season. The fact is, the new coach is not unlike the first responder. There's no time to say goodbye.

In the corporate world, it is not uncommon for you to be escorted from the building without a chance to say goodbye.

The Good Book even speaks to the issue -- let the dead bury the dead.

Even the Good Book

Digger, I got "escorted" out. In 4 years with a major corporation I was promoted twice, then fired for political reasons(I had too much scruples). 3 people that were in my group subsequently left the company over the next 3 months. During the exit interview, each cited my firing and how it was handled as the reason for leaving. The company then contacted me to see if I would return.

It was for the best. I got a one year parachute and went back to work for a privately held company.

Does anyone else find themselves reading an entire Bill Simmons article about a subject that you care nothing about (NBA, Soccer) for the interpersonal analysis/pop-cutlure references/punchlines/general down-to-earth journalism? He could write an article about civil unrest in Rwanda and I'd read it, and enjoy doing so. Is that the mark of a good columnist? Do you think it works still if he hadn't decided on sports journalism, and is writing for rhe WSJ?

Jet, I'm generally against excessive government regulation. Unlike many developers, I do embrace zoning rules. Too much land/roadways have become unpalatable due to poor or lack of planning. Developers and retailers will only build for the short term unless regulated. Back in the 80's, Ft. Myers and Bonita were smaller and welcomed all commercial development.

Smart zoning determines where/how the development "tinkertoys" are placed. Lack of zoning is akin to a game of scrabble ....place each piece of tinkertoy where you get the most points.

I've already served my time on the local planning commission and Ms. Hoopie is serving on the local DDA now. There are a lot of issues to balance.

Jet ...let's see ,your at a seminar/class.

Many development/construction code knee-jerk reactions that I've witnessed have come from ideas introduced to "regulators" while at seminars.

Regulation done right will benefit all. Good luck.

Apparently he said he wanted to be part of the family atmosphere at AU.

He's a huge OG prospect.

There is a lot of speculation going on right now. Walmartians are saying we bought him. Other AU fans are worried that this might be a set up. Get him to commit so he can switch later in the process.

From Rivals:

The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Region from Cullman went into his announcement planning to commit to Alabama, but according to a source close to Region, the Tide may have been a little too aggressive.

"He said that Auburn is the place he wants to go," the source said. "(Alabama) was pressuring him, saying that if he didn't commit, he wouldn't have a spot.

"It just felt like they were being vultures because they knew it was always his dream to play there, but that really didn't sit well with Spencer."

So he made the switch.

"He called coach (Gene) Chizik on his way to the announcement and decided that Auburn was where he wanted to go," the source said. "At Auburn, he wants to be there, but if Auburn isn't the place for him he can still take visits, not be locked into a box like the way Alabama was trying to do."

Have no idea THT, but I am pretty sure he was at the most recent UA junior day.

Check out PMarshall's article today at AUC. He is on Lil Nicky and used the word hypocrite.

Ok...wtc since you are here..

Explain to me what the difference in a "committable" offer and a "non committable offer" is.

Some folks are throwing around those terms on TI and to be honest it doesn't make sense. Why would you offer a non committable offer to someone. Not saying that's what is going on here at all..People are just throwing stuff out.

I'd be a turrble recruiter. I'd be like Shorty and expect a commitment to mean something. However, unlike Shorty, I wouldn't continue to pursue kids who had committed to another school. After all, that's supposed to mean something, right? Shorty is soooooo hypocritical.

PMarsh has a good article about it here

yes, wtc, please explain.

non-committable offer???

Blogger Unknown said...

I really don't know what to make of that. The other thing possibility would be that it is part of ChizCo's innovative recruiting strategy. The kid tells you he wants to come to Auburn. ChizCo says that is wonderful, but could you do us a little favor here... That would be the most hilarious stunt I could think of in recruiting.

2:00 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

noncommittable offer... it sounds like "we will let you come to our school as long as you don't commit to doing so", which of course, makes zero sense.

hilarious perhaps, but not the least bit classy. I know Chiz wouldn't do that and I hope Shorty wouldn't.

2:03 PM
Blogger CHB said...

my understanding is that a "noncommitable offer" is one in which your offer depends on what others do.

2:06 PM

Shorty is a hypocrite.

wow, Doug Segrest has some quotes from the announcement here

2:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Agreed, THT. It wouldn't be ethical, although it would be funny, which kind of balances things out.

The only thing I can think of is that he was given an ultimatum and is as stubborn as I am. If you say I have to do something, I will surely avoid it.

I can't recall a recruit making this big of deal out of an announcement made nearly a year before signing day. Just incredible.

thanks, ch=b. Yep, I've heard of those before but didn't know it by that moniker.

I would be very disappointed if Chiz did something like that. I'd rather lose the recruiting game.

My guy in AU says that there was about 50 UA fans at the announcement and 1 HS coach from Cullman was there and when he announced, the coach stood up and hollered War Eagle.

I wish I was there.

I still think he goes to UA.

On this Region thing. It is way to early to take this serious or get excited about it. He will cool off and probably go back to Bama.

MSNBC is reporting a lady was stuck on the NJ turnpike in the snow for 12 hours. Incredible. Her flight to Chicage was canceled so they decided to drive.

2:14 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Here's what he told Rodney Orr at UA's Junior Day..

"I got the offer from Bama," Region says. "I was really excited. Just being in Coach Saban's office was really exciting. I wasn't sure if I was going to get the offer, but I did and I am just real thankful that my family was there with me when I got it. It's real big news."

"Coach Saban says that he likes how big I am and how well I move for my size," Region says. "I'm a big offensive lineman that he wants. He feels like I move well and that he can pull me a lot and be real successful.

"I talked to Coach Pendry and he said whenever I feel right about committing that I've got his number and to just let him know."

Region says the highlight of the visit was a tour of Bryant Hall.

"That's where I would live and could study and eat and where I could relax," Region says. "Those three things right there are good qualities to have all in one building."

Region has also received offers from Auburn, Ole Miss and Wake Forest.

Committable offer is exactly like CHB says. A team will tell a kid we would like to have you, (offer), but you signing is dependent on what another kid, that we REALLY want does with his offer. (Committable)

2:14 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

In other words I'm not buying the "feeling pressured" to commit angle.

2:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is way to early to really know where any of these kids will end up, but if I were Nick Saban, I wouldn't be interested in the kid.

Thanks wtc and CHB...

Committable offer = consolation prize

2:18 PM

THat non-commitable offer thing doesn't sound like an offer at all. You might tell that to someone committing to Georgia Southern or Troy, but not someone committing to a major program.

Lets talk about something interesting like Google Chrome.

2:19 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

So, making a HUGE assumption that things end up this same way in a year on NSD, is it reasonable to state that we'll all be happy? After all, we stole a recruit from Shorty. And Shorty's glad we did cause he doesn't want a kid that would pull that kind of stunt.

It's a WIN WIN!!!

2:20 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I've not tried chrome since I'm on a mac and haven't heard good things about the mac version.

I hear the PC version is great.

2:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Can you imagine Saban talking to him and trying to get him to change his mind. Spencer finally gives in and says he will change, then he holds another presser with Bama stuff all over the place and then commits to Auburn again? No way would Saban risk that. None of this makes any sense unless the kid was given an ultimatum he didn't like.

2:21 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Faker, the whole Region thing is pretty bizarre.

I seem to recall a JUCO OL a few years ago who was committed to AU, had a similar announcement planned at his former HS (Daphne, I think), everything was set up including an orange-and-blue cake - and he cancelled the announcement an hour before it was scheduled to begin, and signed with Alabama the next day (it was in the December signing period).

To paraphrase that sage philosopher Jaquin Andujar: I can sum up football recruiting in one word. . .yaneverknow.

2:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I tried Chrome. It worked very well on some sites, but I ran into some where the links didn't seem to work in Chrome, when the did in Firefox. It was bizarre and I didn't try to track down what the issue might be.

2:22 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

This is so Nutty, I wouldn't be surprised if he announced for Ole Miss at the next presser

2:23 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The only thing I have heard weirder in recruiting was that kid a few years ago that committed to a school that never offered him.

2:24 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ-I was thinking the same thing about going back to UA, even though I posted that I think he will.

His family and the Britt family are BIG friends. He will be in the doghouse for a while if he goes back.

I would avoid Al.com posters at this point. It is the same thing as usual. AU fans thinking they won the NC and UA fans saying AU bought him, their class is already full (what), he wasn't as high on their board as others, blah, blah, blah.

Steve there is an extension you can get for chrome to fix that problem. Some sites are set up only for IE.

2:25 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

ok, y'all've sucked me back into the Chrome conversation.

Somwhere there's got to be a Mac user who was willing to give Chrome a 2nd chance recently to find out if they'd fixed all the Mac Chrome bugs.

2:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think Chrome is popular on PC because users are comparing it IE. Mac and Linux users dropped IE years ago and Chrome has very little new to offer them.

2:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Here is an article with a picture of Region committing. I wish someone had a video.

2:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

CH=B, what is the name of the extension?

2:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Chrome is very clean looking. It appears to have been derived from Netscape code. Integration with Google could end up being a big plus.

I still prefer Firefox. I am still amazed so many people use IE. I read the other day were many places no longer suppoert IE6.0 and Microsoft will not in a couple of years.

2:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

CH=B, when I hit one those sites that really that says it works only with IE, I try Safari and Firefox anyway. One will usually work. If it doesn't, I send a masty note to the designers and tell them why I'm taking my business elsewhere.

There's no valid design resign reason to make a site IE only.

2:31 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I don't remember the name but go here and search for it.

If someone would teach me how to link I would.
