And they make fun of Auburn's academics?

Hey everyone. I saw this last night on the Ohio State-Tennessee replay:

Evan Turner is the star player for Ohio State. He's sure to be a NBA lottery pick this summer, so clearly he's not concentrating on academics. Yet I get such a kick out of this major. Here's the official description:
"Students of this major learn to plan and manage money and other financial resources. Classes cover such topics as setting financial goals, creating and managing budgets, and avoiding and solving financial problems."
Keep in mind ... he's not even IN the major yet. He's laying the academic foundation to eventually delve deeper into the complex world of fundamental budgets, learning how to make change, how to use a bus card, how to buy groceries.

I'm sure he'll get there someday. Forget for a moment that he's a second-semester junior.

OK. It's good to have a diversion sometimes. I'll have a practice report up around noon.

UGA has a similar course of study in the Home-Ec department. My neighbor's son got a similar degree and then became a stock broker ...yikes!

Not to be deterred by the subject/humor of this thread, I'll re-post from the end of the last thread.

Finebaum has his weekly column out that claims Beat Writers have fallen in prestige/substance and are now just media lap dogs for the schools. PF contradicts himself later in the column by using the Meyer incident as an example to make his point, then mentions that Meyer later apologized to the reporter ....which negates the argument PF is a shock jock that lives off creating controversy and I place no value on his opinion, but this does raise a few thoughts.

According to most accounts, the schools limit media access more now than in the past. This is probably due to the 24 hour media cycle, internet and the fact that the media as a whole is much more apt to emphasize/exaggerate the negative just to create a story than in the past. Beat writers in the past focused on players, formations, opponents, fundamentals, etc. Nowadays, a fight at practice or a DUI will get headline reporting. Sometimes social engineering-inspired comments are mixed in an article and disguised as "reporting".

I still see that there are well-respected beat writers like JGT out there. Maybe not as many as in the past, but still enough to fill the demand. The problem for the beat writers is that the public demand is changing. A growing number of sports fans nowadays are more concerned with the gossip of sports, than the substance of sports.

JG, thanks for what you do. Your newspaper reporting is always devoid of gossip-unnecessary opinion. Your tactful restraint, humor and control on this blog has set a great example and made this an enjoyable place for opinion to be expressed.

I need the creative help of the Hotties.

I'm starting a new series of podcast (non-sports related) and I need a catch name not currently in use.

The focus is primarily movie series reviews with some delving into television series of yesteryear.

Any ideas?

FRM - a nice acronym for "paying the bills". Of course, if that were my major, I'd have no money with which to pay said bills, but at least I'd be able to create a budget as evidence of that fact.

Of course, that's coming from someone with precisely zero ballin' skilz.

So... back to work.

Hey Digger, Cincy, JGT, et al.

So far I have enjoyed 2 days in Copenhagen and am now in Tromso, Norway. I absolutely love the Danes; they are so friendly and easy going. Norway is gorgeous. Cold, but gorgeous. Tomorrow I'll be heading back to Oslo before traveling to Stockholm on the 2nd. On the 6th I fly to Skopje, Macedonia to visit friends for a few days before going to London for a week long business strategy seminar. Afterwards i have 4 free day in which I hope to travel to Cornwall to see the Eden Project.

There. Done. Now, hopefully THT will stop junking up HABOTN.
