More from Pro Day

After the "measurable" portion of the workout, players were sent outside to work position-specific drills. Some scouts take this stuff pretty seriously, but most simply watch while conversing with fellow scouts.

That's how they roll.

Of note:

**Ben Tate and Lester were put through drills by former Mississippi State coach Sly Croom, who now coaches with the St. Louis Rams.

**Tate still has that chip on his shoulder. ``I kept telling you all I was fast. I've been underestimated all my career. One day, the underdog will be on top."

**Lester was on the B.C. Lions practice squad last year and currently is attending Auburn to complete his degree. He's hoping to catch on with an NFL team this fall.

**McKenzie seemed disappointed by his set of numbers, which I thought were outstanding. ``I came here to put up numbers and I didn't get what I wanted."

**So why did McKenzie miss spring practice last year? ``Just stressing out. The season that we had (in 2008), I took it real hard. That last game -- I put it on myself, that the last game was my fault. I can’t do stuff like that. I can’t let stuff stress me out. I can’t let that happen again."

**Robert Johnson said he was inspired to jump back into pro football by his two young sons, who were running around the house in December with Johnson's old football helmets on their heads. ``I wanted to give them a chance to see what their dad could do on a football field."

**Johnson was on the New Orleans Saints' practice squad in 2006.

**Maurice Smith, the two-time Olympic decathlete, said he's hoping to catch on with an NFL team despite little experience. ``I played pick-up football with my friends in Arizona in junior college. I have speed and I have the hands." Smith won a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships and was Team Jamaica's captain in Beijing.

**McFadden was given his EAABWAA "Good Guy Award" plaque today:

**Here are your 40 times in order:
McFadden, 4.39
Billings, 4.42
Lester, 4.46
Gabe Barrett, 4.60
Maurice Smith, 4.69
Dunn, 4.70

McKenzie, 4.74
Todd, 4.84

**Here are your vertical jumps in order:

Billings, 34
Coleman, 33.5
Maurice Smith, 32.5
Barrett, 32.5

Why did he put the 2008 season loss on himself?

7:13 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Just a note from the cruise this past weekend. A UAt guy was sitting at our dinner table, with a UAt golf vest on and started talking football (I did not brig it up). I engaged him in conversation and it was going well until he said it quite obvious that UAt was looking ahead to the UF game and wasn't focused on AU. I told him I thought the same thing about AU. They were looking ahead to the bowl game and if they had focused on UAt, they probably would have blown them out.

Anyone else see the rumor that Auburn may be looking to hire Rick Majeris? He isn't my ideal choice, but he could bring something to the table. Even if we only got a couple of years out of him (due to age and health) then we could be an attractive job for someone else.

9:10 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

CH=B,
Rick Majerus was a guest on Roundtable in Birmingham today. After his segment they started talking about the idea of him coming to Auburn. I don't know much about basketball, but he doesn't seem like the kind of coach JJ would hire. But what do I know?

9:18 PM
Blogger wtc said...

CHB-Was that a rumor from an 'in the know' person or just radio fodder? I have not heard his name mentioned. I did just read an article by Scarbinsky about how JJ being quiet is not good for Lebo. 2-5 in the SEC tourney. No 1st team SEC players in his 6 years.

I still think he stays. Not sure why other than AU tied his hands when he came here and they are making it up to him, but he has to know his days are numbered. 5 seniors on this team. he recruited all of them. Not a good record.

March 17 -Big East
March 24 - PAC 10
March 31 - Big XII
April 7 - SEC

8:29 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I hope your Big East and ACC analysis consists of "They Blow. Pick a name out of a hat. This is the team that will play in the Orange Bowl, which nobody will watch."

8:35 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, I try to be a little more objective than that. Plus, the Big East isn't all that terrible. The ACC needs help - yes, but they are still a BCS conference. That counts for something.

8:36 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Can you get behind my quest to get the MWC to trade Wyoming and SDSU for Boise and Nevada, then replace either the ACC or Big East as a BCS conference? I think that would help things.

8:42 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the MWC and the WAC top teams should play on championship game weekend as a play-in game to an automatic bid in the BCS bowls.

Bammers tell me MWC teams "suck" and "don't belong" though.

8:43 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

hahaha.

Utah, TCU, and BYU are better than the top three teams in the ACC. Yeah, the WAC is weak, but Boise shouldn't have to have a play in game vs one of those when those other conferences have the opportunity to send two; they just need to get out of the WAC altogether.

8:51 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

PF - you need to make that SDSU and UNM. Don't go bashing my Cowboys from Laramie.

8:58 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Ah Bama fans. I haven't heard diddly from them this offseason. It's been rather nice, actually. Maybe they should win every year. Or just give them a trophy and let everyone else play outside of them. I mean, they're the best and and everyone else sucks so why bother having them compete?

8:59 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

There's actually a very cool pop-punk scene in Laramie. The Lillintons and Teenage Bottlerocket are really good bands.

Okay, Cowboys can stay. They just need to step it up if they're going to play in the next great BCS conference.

9:04 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sensi ...didn't intend to call you out personally. ...apology offered.

WAC and MWC teams don't have the talent and depth to win a tough conference. Sure, every once in a while they get taken lightly and beat a top team. Beating top teams consistently in the middle of a tuff schedule would provide a beginning point for a discussion. That ain't the case. Those conferences occasionally spawn promising coaches and some skill position talent, but that is about where any comparison should stop. As for the player talent level? .. check out the size, speed and ranking of the recruits.

9:11 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seanzie, we have a low Bammer infestation rate in NW Ga. and are accordingly spoiled. We went to Stateboro this past weekend to visit our daughter and do the parent-sorority thing. We met great parents from all over the USA ..and no Bammers. Conversely, my buddy from Fairhope went to the Cesspool(W. Vance) for his daughter's orientation(she could get into Bams, but not AU). He met a few nice parents and a bunch of jerks ...all Bammers.

It's sad to admit it, but sometimes I have to rely on the HABOTN to keep the Bama hate burning.

9:24 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Thanks, PF. They did win one of the most exciting bowl games this past season. But alas, they are destined to a goal of achieving mediocrity given the facilities and Laramie winters.

9:31 AM

sensi, look out. people don't like it unless you have all positive words for everything Auburn related. Next thing you know you'll be racing Ben Tate in the 40 and doing cone drills

9:32 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I don't think that BYU, Utah, or TCU look that small or slow on the field. I have zero idea what they look like on paper, though. Boise does look small, but not slow. They'd have to recruit some size if they were to compete in the new and improved MWC that I'm proposing, but I think they are right where they need to be to do it. Joining a conference that would be joining the BCS would be enough extra exposure to do it. You think any of those teams would be worse than Kentucky, Duke, Rutgers, Syracuse, UNC, etc...? Heck, I think they'd be just as competitive as South Carolina in the SEC (not more, but as much as).

I'd agree that MWC or WAC teams wouldn't be able to hang in a more loaded conference. However, they've done enough against the big boys when given the chance to deserve consideration.

The BCS system isn't perfect. We all know that.

Which Han Solo was better - before or after the carbon freeze?

Discuss.

before.

scoundrel? i like the sound of that.

Definitely before the freeze. He was kind of annoying in Return of the Jedi.

How about this... better character for Harrison Ford. Indy or Han Solo?

Indy.

Martin Lawrence would play Trooper Taylor.

The farmer from Babe would play Dye.

Ben Tate whining about how people disrespected his speed is reminiscent of Michael Jordan's hall of fame speech where he talked about all the imagined disrespect he received. I guess having that attitude works for some athletes.

But seriously, for the last two or three years, it has been repeatedly said that Tate had the fastest 40 time of our backs. At what point was he accused of being slow?

10:29 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I think he's arguing the perception. He might have told people he was fast, but people express shock when they actually see the number. I guess there was some inherit doubt.

10:36 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Besides, Ben is still a kid and he's not a retired Hall of Fame legend in his 40's. I'll give him some leeway in what he's saying.

Wow, Robert Johnson comes back from the Crossroads to try the NFL again.

When he left early for the NFL after the 03 season that seemed like a bad move, 7 years later giving it a second try...well I wish him the best.

AJC has some outstanding journalists.

From an article, which serves zero purpose at all, about a Metro-area car dealership starting to sell Aston Martins comes this gem:

In some of the earlier Bond movies, the car's tailpipe converted to a machine gun. That option is not available at the Sandy Springs dealership.

Really? This is a serious newspaper?

I saw Robert Johnson's greatest follower, Eric Clapton in Atlanta last night...he played two of RJ's songs, Little Queen of Spades and of course Crossroads.

Yeah PF, they should at least tell you where that option is available. Unbelievable

I read that article too. While they did point out that the machine gun option was unavoidable; they failed to mention anything about ejector seats, bullet proof shields over the rear window, retractable razor/saw thingies which would come out of the wheel, and a host of other things. Really poor journalism.

If Jessica Parker Wilson can make the NFL then I don't see why Todd can't. 13 reps of 225 is pretty impressive strength by the way for a QB.

I thought the machine guns were in the front. Tailpipe was oil slick and smokescreen. I had the toy version of that James Bond car when I was a kid. It was awesome, except that almost every kid who had it lost the guy from the ejector seat within a week or so.
