Post-practice chatter

Hey everyone. The Tigers have ended their 2-hour practice. Here is what we learned.

  • Signee Shon Coleman, a highly rated offensive tackle, has been diagnosed with an unusual medical condition. It is treatable. Research suggests >80% of people under the age of 25 diagnosed with the condition are cured. Coach Gene Chizik acknowledged that Coleman is dealing with a "medical issue" and that he's been in contact with Coleman. It's unclear how this situation will affect Coleman's career.

  • Recall that this could be the third consecutive year that an Auburn signee has been sidelined with a non-football issue ... DE Andre Wadley in 2008 and OL Aubrey Phillips in 2009.

  • Assistant coach Curtis Luper was quick to point out that Mario Fannin isn't yet the team's No. 1 tailback. He's simply competing for the job along with Onterio McCalebb and Dontae Aycock.

  • Aycock missed practice today because he is ill.

  • Fannin said he still thinks about that South Florida game from 2007, which saw him lose two fumbles. He believes that was supposed to be his "break-out" game and that his career would have developed differently without the fumbles.

  • Assistant coach Trooper Taylor said DeAngelo Benton has made significant progress since last season and now is exhibiting reliability previously demonstrated only by Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery.

  • Demond Washington seems content with his recent move back to cornerback. His speed, size and lateral quickness seem to be a better play at that position. The Tallassee native moonlighted at safety in 2009 because of injuries and depth problems.

Just read on some ESPN dude's column a letter about how the beat hacks got to participate in LSU's pro day. This dude fell and broke his collar bone running the 40.

Who among Auburn beat hacks would win EAABWAA's "Beat Hack Most Likely to Break the Collar Bone at Pro Day" Award?

Wait, I got engaged on ESPN College Gameday. Someone (I still don't know who) custom made a banner for us that they hung outside of our rehearsal dinner with an Auburn and UGA helmet. The only hint of football at the wedding was my father in law's bowtie, which was a subtle and classy piece, though. We did have the Outback Bowl on at brunch the next morning, but it was not intrusive. I don't think we're rednecks, but college football played a big part in developing our relationship, so we had some elements naturally woven into some of the periphrials of our wedding. I doubt many here have been to a classier event.

That being said, having Tebow involved does scream redneck. :-)

Good morning, PF.

CH=B - I just googled that to see what you were talking about. It looks painful.

I don't know if this has been posted, but saw it on a board on another site.

The Marietta Daily Journal had a sweet story about a teen-aged Down's syndrome girl going to her high school senior prom. A lifelong friend had asked her last summer. The boy was Philip Lutzenkirchen.

On the day before the prom, the girl had a high fever -- as high as 102, but was able get it under control. On the morning of the prom, the story said Lutzenkirchen suffered a concussion at practice. Due to medical advice, he was held in Auburn too late to be there for pre-prom photos, but did arrive at the dance to keep his date with the girl.

So that answers the question about Lutzenkirchen, but tells us something even more.

Jet, you big sleepy head. You've got to get up earlier than this if you want to scoop Dale.

That article reminds me why I love Auburn and her people. It is about so much more than football.

Good morning, all!

That is a great story. You can tell that she is an appreciated young lady. Cudos to her parents and community for that. She will likely accomplish much.
