Practice No. 2

Hey everyone. Auburn's second spring practice has ended. Here's what we have learned:

  • S Daren Bates will be held out of contact drills until two-a-days. He suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder during the LSU game last year. Surgery was performed in January. Bates is in shape and all, but he's lost a lot of weight because upper-body weightlifting is out. So it goes.

  • TB Onterio McCalebb said he's gained 10 pounds since the Outback Bowl. It's from weightlifting. His arms look significantly bigger to me. "O-Dog" said he can feel the extra weight, but it hasn't affected his acceleration.

  • McCalebb is predicting a better season in 2010 because he's not partying as much.

  • Here is the current skill-position array:
    • "9" (outside) -- Darvin Adams, D'Angelo Benton
    • "5" (inside/tight end/utility) -- Phillip Lutzenkirchen, Blake
    • "3" (inside/utility) -- Emory Blake, Kodi Burns, Jay Wisner
    • "4" (tailback) -- Mario Fannin/Onterio McCalebb, Dontae Aycock
    • "2" (outside) -- Terrell Zachery, Quindarius Carr

  • OL Bart Eddins is running with the first team at left guard. Big Snacks Berry played that spot last season, though he's been slowed after undergoing a relatively minor knee surgery. Eddins is aiming to make that spot his own.

  • Gene Chizik said it's his understanding that S Zac Etheridge will try to play this fall. I haven't spoken with Etheridge to confirm that or understand the medical risks involved.

  • McCalebb is "boys" with Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who soon will begin his second season in the majors. They're both from Ft. Meade, Fla., and McCutchen's father was McCalebb's youth pastor.

Bases load. A good hit to right that looked like it would provide a score.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Yeah, Steve, that was a heck of a bunt.

12:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Just enough speed on it to get passed the catcher and not enough for the first base buy to handle it.

12:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Dang!!! Auburn strands 3 after the bottom of the 3rd. Frustrating.

A double play is just what we needed there.

Auburn fielding is looking world's apart from the last two games. I don't get it. The whole team is either on, or the sloppiest defense you've ever seen.

1:01 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Not gonna beat SC by leaving the bases loaded... but the D looks pretty good behind Nelson today... and Nelson is dealing.
We just need the bats to wake up.

1:02 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Bats are awake, just not stringing them together. 6 hits in first three innings and nothing to show for it.

Just saw a photo from a Tea Party rally. One of the signs was less than impressive: So and so "sucks". Sorry, but if that is the best point you have to put on your sign, stay at home. You haven't exactly convinced me that you know what you are talking about.

1:06 PM

If I ever hold a political sign, it's going to be something like that. The whole event of holding political signs in traffic is ridiculous enough, why not make it a total mockery?

Stranded runners galore. Paws small ball philosophy is just not working today. Bring on the long ball (I'm looking at you Hunter Morris).

2:16 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

The worst at bats have been with 2 outs. That's 12 runners stranded, 11 hits, no runs. How many inning ending Ks? Dangit.

2:19 PM

And I cannot stand to see a batter go down looking with 2 outs. That drives me nuts!!! Either swing or lean into it. Don't go down looking.

2:21 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Well, you've seen it at least three times today...and with runners in scoring position to boot. I'm sure Paws will have something to say about that.

Ballgame, dang it.

2:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

When is the next game? I was really hoping we would win at least one in this series. South Carolina is a good team and it would be great to end their winning streak.

2:34 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Ballgame. Auburn shut out despite 11 hits. Loses the series. Cole Nelson pitched a great game, but with the usual (and super frustrating) sloppy fielding by a bunch of guys playing positions they aren't used to, and lack of aggressiveness to capitalize on baserunners, he gets a loss. I bet Paws has something to say about both the bats on shoulders and fielding woes.

2:35 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Tomorrow at noon, I think.

2:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hopefully Jay will post some practice info soon. Today was suppose to be the first day in pads.

2:36 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Yes, South Carolina is a very good team, but Auburn has done a lot to help them win the last two games. I think Auburn has a team that compete with everyone in the SEC (except LSU) if they can solve the problems that exist between the ears.

2:37 PM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

thanks guys 4 your help

2:38 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Was practice open to reporters today? I thought I read (possibly on Bitter's blog) that they wouldn't even get to see the first 30 minutes of about half of the practices.

2:39 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, the other day we were talking about possibly going to a 3-4 defense. The more I think about it, the more is makes sense. Obviously Bates moving to linebacker makes you think, considering we have 3 starters returning, but then I though about how I thought we would sign one more defensive tackle. The 3-4 would makes sense with the players we got combined with the incoming freshmen.

2:39 PM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

My wife and I went to the last few innings last night after the Will Graham thing and SC did not look great Auburn just looked worse and had trouble like PF said "between the ears."

2:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I thought they were going to get to see the first part, probably 30 minutes, but I am more interested in what the coaches and players have to say.

In terms of what we are going to do differently next season, I don't expect them to show the press anything. The value of the press seeing practice is probably more in terms of who is at practice and what position coach they are working with.

2:42 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

"Problem between the ears" is a good way to put it. When you have 11 hits and no runs, there is some kind of problem.

2:44 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I don't care much for baseball anymore, but I did enjoy the running commentary. Thanks, gents.

2:45 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

SteveFC,

I've heard you mention TRR's ability and desire to switch up schemes. You think the personnel is at a point where they are in between having players slanted towards any specific scheme, so we'll most likely see several different formations this year?

2:46 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Okay, I'm headed to the pool. I pulled something in my lower back playing dodgeball this morning (I'm a loser, yes), and can't currently touch my toes. Hopefully a little swimming and stretching with resistance bands in the water will help work it out.

2:48 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Got home in time to watch the 9th inning. Couldn't believe it when I saw we had 11 hits and no runs. Pathetic.

Thats a tough loss to take if your Nelson.

2:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Using multiple defensive formations is something Roof did at Minnesota, so at some point I expect it at Auburn.

I am not particularly a Roof fan just yet, although I am excited about some of what I have read.

I am hoping he turns out to be similar to the DC who was at MSU and then Memphis, although I am having brain lock at the moment. Remember the face and sandles, but can't remember the name. The guy might rush 11 or 2. You never knew what he would do.

So far from the number of players, the 3-4 looks likely, but not necessarily the only front we will run.

2:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Joe Lee Dunn is the guy I am thinking of.

2:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Experience would probably be what limits the schemes. A lot will depend on if Savage, McNeil, and Etheridge are all really back.

2:54 PM

Safety, Anthony Swain, from Gadsden committed to AU today.

5:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I see where we have gotten a commit from Anthony Swain, a safety from Gadsen. He is 6-foot-3 and 213-pounds.

That is one huge safety. Does anyone know anything about him? The size makes me think he would be a linebacker.

5:54 PM
Blogger Miller said...

How old is Brad Stevens? He looks like he's about 17.

5:55 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Bet he plays LB Steve...

5:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I liked that comment from Malzahn on how much further along the QBs are this season. My impression last season during spring practive was that he really didn't like any of them.

5:56 PM
Blogger Miller said...

He's got the speed to be a BIG safety... but, could grow into a LB...
I think AU wants to keep him as a safety though if he doesn't grow out of it.

5:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That is my guess, FSJ. Even if the kid has the speed, I doubt someone that big would have the quickness to play safety.

5:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Rivals lists his speed a 4.6, which is fast enough for a safety, although certainly no blazing. It may be it wills depends on his frame and if they think he can handle more weight or if he should drop 10 or 15 pounds and stay at safery.

Many thanks to all the Hotties.

2.0 is off to another travel adventure. The plane she was supposed to take from Florence to Copenhagen was diverted to Bologna for reasons unknown before it even got to Florence. After a long wait, they put all passengers in Florence on a bus to go to Bologna, then decided the plane could come to Florence after all, so everyone was returned to the Florence airport to wait for the plane to arrive. It is was supposed to arrive in Copenhagen around 10:30, but just landed 5 minutes ago (12:45 a.m.). She is staying with a friend's family (the friend is actually on vacation in the U.S.). I'm sure they will be very happy to welcome her when the taxi pulls up to their house in a while. They move their clocks ahead to daylight savings time in about one hour. No doubt that 2.0 is not a happy camper right about now, but as long as she is safe, I'm a happy dad.

D.C. at 1 a.m instead of Raleigh at 7 pm - we rented a car and got home at 5:30 a.m. MrsTHT had breakfast ready for us.

Norm- I think that San Fran is a top 5 most expensive places to live. My wife cousin lives off Lombard street and pays like 2,500 for a small 2 bedroom apartment.

I really loved the National Parks in California, but I don't care one teeny bit for San Fran. You can have it, Eddie. I'll take the Shenandoah Valley.

Norm,

Did you put a flower in your hair?

8:46 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I would move to either NYC or San Fran without any hesitations. Love both.

head to head matchups:

Huggins 8
Calipari 1

KY should have fired Calipari yesterday and hired him back tomorrow.

PF - you silly nincompoop, I don't care what the song says, I'm not putting a flower in my hair. Well, except for many years ago when my daughter asked me to do it to match what was in hers.

Now we're off to dinner.

Well... I think the best I can finish now is 13th or so. I knew better than to pick UK.

Austin, Tx and the hill country just west of town is outstanding and affordable.

Eddie, I couldn't imagine raising children in NYC.

yes, Hoopie, that is true. That would be very tolerable.

PF - Philip Blondheim was waaayyyy before your time.

Hoopie- Austin is a great city also. Very close to being transferred to their. Love the BBQ and the nif
night life. Worked on UT campus building a museum. Lved the several trips I made there.

I don't think I can force myself to pull for Tennessee....

8:58 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that's ok, FSJ... just as long as you can pull for Baylor.

GO BEARS!!!

9:03 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- it's tough , but I will be doing so. You have to like Bruce Pearl.

I developed 2 different shopping centers in Austin and visited there weekly for a year and 1/2. If we left the SE US, Austin or Phoenix would be at the top of the list.

MrsTHT went for a nap at about 3:30. I tried to get her up from her "nap" at about 7:20. My guess is she'll wake up by midnight and stay up the rest of the night.

Now the question is, do I pull a FSJ and work my way towards the flip?

3:15 AM
Blogger wellsAU said...

One could argue both points.

3:16 AM
Blogger wellsAU said...

I've never had a flip before.

Yet there's still 15 more comments to go.

Clearly I won't get it tomorrow morning due to my sleeping in.

Spring practice is in full bloom, so why not my flipping?

Cam can transfer schools, so why can't I transfer pages?

Drew Brees won the super bowl, so why can't I make a push for HABOTN recognition?

3:19 AM
Blogger wellsAU said...

That doesn't really follow a logical trail like the previous two.

It's 3:20 in the morning, I've got to find something to occupy my resistance to sleep.
