Practice report, 4/14
Hey everyone. Practice has ended. Here's what we learned:
- Auburn scrimmaged today. WR Darvin Adams was held out because of a shoulder injury, though he expects to participate in A-Day.
- Adams said DeAngelo Benton had a good day.
- The offense scored at least three touchdowns. They scored two early, which included a long pass from Cam Newton to Benton. He beat T'Sharvan Bell for that touchdown.
- Assistant coach Trooper Taylor was impressed with that play: ``We talk about catching balls in windows. That was a peep-hole. I don't have a drill for that."
- WR Kodi Burns caught a touchdown pass from Newton.
- Wideout Ralph Spry Jr. had a fumble and a touchdown. ``He has to get the track mentality out and become a football player," Taylor said.
- Taylor then turned around and said he's been most impressed with Spry and Blake this spring.
- Taylor said the weird scoring system of 2009 has been ditched. He said the teams will be mixed up (not 1s versus 2s) to provide some different challenges for players.
- LB Craig Stevens (left) said the defense wasn't up to the challenge initially. Once the scrimmage developed a tempo, though, he said the offense began to lose its verve.
- Taylor said the scrimmage mirrored last season (quick start, late struggles) and he let players know about it. He was not happy.
- He indicated that one of the interceptions was because WR Emory Blake made a mistake.
- Stevens said he's been impressed with the way Newton has handled business of the field. The quarterback, he said, arrived without arrogance and quietly worked to build trust.
- Adams said he likes watching Newton play because he brings the deep ball back into the fold. Asked if Newton was the only quarterback capable of throwing deep passes accurately, Adams quickly covered his tracks and said they're all capable.
- There were at least two interceptions -- one each from Ikeem Means and Drew Cole.
- Defensive coordinator Ted Roof (left) said nobody (reporters, fans) should infer things about his rotations based on what's happening right now. We learned the other day that Jonathan Evans was running with the No. 1 defense at strong-side linebacker. I still think that's significant, but Roof insists it isn't. It's important to remember that Daren Bates may fit in here somewhere.
- Roof said Bates, who is out with a shoulder injury, has pieced together a "good mental spring."
- Wes Byrum has been happy with his kicking so far this spring. He hopes to handle both field goals and kickoffs this fall.

I must respectfully disagree with your prof's assertion THT.
I still support punishment to the KSU students. They are paying an extra $75 student fee for the stadium for the next 30 years (not entirely a public donation, huh), while at the same time opposing tuition increases.
As far as Title IX, I was responding to Hoopie's comment about it.
ehyou,
And you know this how?
The "Europeanisation" of America? That happened back in the 1600's.
Uh, just rumors Cincy. I, of course, have no first hand knowledge.
Very plausible explanation.
I think you have the new recreation center fees mixed up with the soccer stadium there. As far as tuition increases go, that's a Georgia University Systems, not a KSU problem. So should UGA not expand anything over on their campus? I mean, they are now getting a brand new indoor facility and upgrade to their athletic complex with new training rooms and weight room. Just picking out the KSU soccer field was petty, and you only did so because it was women's soccer IMO. Sorry if I missed your post opposing that.
Private donations...and student fees are paying for the stadium. The students will chip in about $75 per semester until the 30-year bonds are paid off.
-Ralph Ellis, Atlanta Journal Constitution
well, it's high time we expanded the AU soccer stadium. There's no way we can let KSU have a stadium larger than ours.
Eddie, I just re-read my posts to figure out what I said to get such a reaction, and I've got to laugh at what you've said. You assume too much.
I vote to let the students pay for it.
For real, THT. That puppy is nice. AU needs to step up their game.
[AU women's soccer stadium] is nice.
I'll say..
In the summer of 2002, built-in restrooms were added.
Good Morning from Chicago! Just checking in for the baseball score from last night......actually think I might make a baseball game this year since now I am missing A-Day.
THT - should I be left to my imagination as to how things were handled prior to '02?
Is anybody else tired of getting letters from Mrs Elina George, written from her sick bed?
She should just die already.
80's today and then in the 50's by Sat. gonna wish I was at Auburn.
Norm - you can share your imaginings with the Hotties.
Off to sit in meetings all day....check in later!
I've never heard of Mrs. George and I've certainly never received mail from her.
So...who here has laughed at the whole Confederate Day in Virginia debacle?
Colbert summed up things nicely a couple of nights ago with "The Word".
The Civil War was about States' Rights...to own slaves.
it shows up in gmail spam folder, Norm. I love gmail... about .01% of the spam I get with Earthlink, and about .0000001% of the spam with yahoo.
Of course, 2.0s receives much more gmail spam than I do, since she classifies every message I send as spam.
What's the debacle?
Seanzie - please don't bait the far, far left Hottie
Just checked my Gmail Spam folder, nothing from Mrs. George though I did have a number of offers for medicine products.
My bad THT, I didn't mean to do that.
Blue Moon Pizza sounds awfully familiar. Was it on Windy Hill Rd in the late '90?
I'm not sure, I've only been here since 2007.
please take the extra "s" in my 9:45 post and put it where it belongs in my 9:54 post. Thank you.
Today is National High Five Day.
THT...I think you went with one too many "far's" when describing my left wing tendencies. :)
What I feel about the subject, though, doesn't have much to do with my political standings so much as it does with the B.A. in History I have from Auburn.
Anybody ever have Dr. Noe while taking a history class at Auburn?
I never took a history class at Auburn. I aced Euro and American AP in High School and nailed 2 5's to gain 12 hours of history credit before ever setting foot on campus.
I saw him in that Bond movie, but I'm so old he was probably future history when I was at AU. I was taught a lot of wrong stuff in school, too.
History is told by the winners.
So says the bad guy in Modern Warfare 2.
I didn't actually learn it from Dr. Noe, I learned it myself by reading, but Dr. Noe did teach an excellent Civil War class at Auburn.
Or maybe it was Captain Price, either way.
We'll have to take your word for it.
E-Bro, Which General was best?
E-Bro, any of your friends in the Noog big into hunting for Civil War artifacts? That was huge with some of the guys that I worked with when I lived there.
Sorry, Hotties, but E-Bro doesn't list an email in his profile, so y'all can skip over this post for him...
the Southern aristocracy, which controlled politics, certainly fueled secession based on their desire to continue slavery.
I can proudly state that none of my 19th century ancestors were slave owners. They were poor as dirt (I'm nobly carrying on that tradition). However, there were a whole bunch of my ancestors who fought for the CSA, and it certainly couldn't have been to protect slavery. It was likely for the same reason given by a captured Confederate:
Union soldier: Why are you fighting?
Confederate: Because you are here.
In 1970 I took History in Haley Center in some huge auditorium with a few hundred other freshmen. Prof used overhead projector with those transparent thingies......needless to say I learned a whole lot..............
I will have to say that was the most boring class I took at AU.
FYI...technology has come a long, long, long way.
E-Bro:
I also am a product of the AU history department, as is my better half, though long before your time. I knew I liked you for something in addition to your Tiger football allegiance.
Because of over exposure to the topic as a child, I have never had a great interest in the CW.
if anyone tries to high-5 me today i just might punch them in the face.
Hey Scottie! Long Distance Digital High Five!
I have voted republican every time, and I see the civil war was about slavery. No left or right about it. I am very happy the south lost.
However, if we are to honor people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, are we not to honor other people who thought like them on the slavery issue? And I would say confederate soldiers don't even approach the evil of Andrew Jackson, who appears on our currency.
I don't even know what "honor" means. Our age says those people back then had screwed up morals and just didn't know it. I guess we consider that finally, our generation has figured out all the good morals. Of course, 150 years from now, that generation will say that we had screwed up morals, but luckily they have finally been enlightened. And so on.
Seanzie, long-distance T-K-O, PUNCH-OUT! mike tyson style.
Too slow, I ducked it.
We celebrate a rebel government everyday and nobody seems to care. They make a month for a different one and it's a "debacle".
gggrrrr....
Rebel government who disliked taxation without representation > rebel government who wanted to keep slavery around
The federal government is still trying to control state matters. Slavery was wrong, though.
Don't kid yourself, the second was about the same thing. It's just a matter of perception.
I recently downloaded Mike Tyson's Punch Out for my phone. I forgot how awesome it was.
And not specifically taxation without representation, but the underlying economic bullying.
there's an app for that?
cool.
There's an app for everything.
Like this, Seanzie?
Boy, is it time for some football!
Nintendo App, Scottie. Apple would never allow something so cool in the iPhone store, though. Android > iPhone.
I'm not sure how an app for that would work, but I'm sure someone could build one. Or maybe make a game of it, Like Road Rash.
apparently there is an app for mike tyson quotes. that should be fun.
I heart my Droid.
"I could have knocked him out in the 3rd round but I wanted to do it slowly, so he would remember this night for a long time."
Mike Tyson on Tyrell Biggs
No, that Business Week link was in response to underlying economic bullying comment.
It's Hot Wife's birthday. I think I'll buy one of these
Barely safe for work.
THT...apologies for not having my email address listed in my profile. I'll remedy that.
I agree with much of what you said, and am quite familiar with your closing quote about asking a Southern soldier why they are fighting and him replying "Because you're down here."
I too had ancestors who fought for the Confederacy from up around North Alabama, and while I haven't confirmed it, I am quite certain they too never owned slaves given how poor I'm sure they probably were.
The Civil War was certainly characterized well by the saying, "Rich Man's War, Poor Man's Fight." I'm as certain that many Southern men didn't fight for slavery as I am that many Germans didn't fight in World War II with the sole intention of murdering Jews, Gypsies, and other
"irregulars".
It's quite possible that my ancestors didn't care too much for slaves and blacks as a race, but that was par for the course throughout the United States back then, North and South.
So I will absolutely agree with your assertion about many Southerners (the non-Aristocratic) not fighting for slavery, and I'm not looking to disown or dishonor my own ancestors. But the Civl War as a general conflict was one precipitated by the growing divide over the slave issue. As much admiration as I had growing up for such Southern "heroes" like Lee, Jackson, Longstreet, etc., the side that should have and needed to win that war did.
Too often, especially in the South, the Civil War is romanticized beyond reason, but it was a tragic episode beyond belief in this country's history. But at least it ended the slavery issue once and for all.
Norm, i just ordered a Wii with express delivery. thanks. ;)
Gentlemen,
Nice romantic dinners out, jewelry, flowers, furniture for your condo, these are much more effective types of foreplay than the Wii. Don't ask me how I know this :)
I can't give flowers 10 times a day. I'll go bankrupt!
Ah that makes more sense.
Suicide bombers often do not understand their cause. They are patriotic and brave. After all, why would they doubt the society they live in? It's the only thing they know?
Just thoughts. Not saying confederate soldiers shouldn't be honored, but I tend to side with the hippy E Bro more on this. The Civil War was much more tragedy than honorable. The southern cause was evil, and the northern soldiers did many evil things.
Civil War and Reconstruction should be taught as so: everyone living then was evil. Don't be evil.
I think you've defined the cause to be to narrow. But we'll have to agree to disagree.
secession was precipitated by the slavery issue; the war was precipitated by an imperial tyrant who didn't give a rat's derrierre about the slave issue, as evidenced by the following quotes:
I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.
and
My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.
Why he thought he had to invade Virginia to "save the Union" is beyond me. Neither Virginia nor the CSA had any intentions of invading the USA.
I strongly suspect only a teeny tiny fraction of Hotties are enjoying this history discussion, so I won't post any more (today) on the subject. Unless of course it in response to a question posed?
Michael, that is not an open invitation for you to end all your posts with a "?" :-)
I think poor southern soldiers did in many cases fight for slavery, not because they owned slaves, but because they feared what would happen if the slaves were freed. And the slave holders encouraged that fear.
I think history discussion "rawk."
I KNOW I am going to regret this, but it is a "compelsion" as Barney would say. While I believe the issue of slavery was very important in the Civil War, I don't believe it to be the main issue. Much more important were state rights versus Federal rights. A fight that is still going on :) It just bothers me when it is said that the Civil War was all about slavery. Much too simplistic a view.
I wonder what Admiral Ackbar's views on the Civil War are?
PF, 'THE SHIELDS ARE STILL UP!'
i'm down for AU football & Star Wars history. otherwise not so much.
"It's a trap!"
Interesting footnote to the discussion, the secession and resignation of seats in the house and senate allowed previously blocked bills to pass. One such act was the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. After the war, however, the 1862 Act was extended to the former Confederate states; it was eventually extended to every state and territory, including those created after 1862.
One of these Land-Grant Colleges is none other than....Auburn University.
Well, alright then.
So, the Southern states helped make Auburn!
PF, connecting the dots.
to an earlier comment in the first 200: I thought everyone knew how to make a hormone
cincy - I haven't purchased a condo for Hot Wife and have no intentions of doing so in the near future. I'm not opposed to flowers or nice dinners occasionally but I really think the Wii thing just makes sense.
Wii = fun for everyone.
OK, Norm, do what you want, but I'm telling you you need to trust me on this! Don't say I didn't warn you.
thank goodness someone asked a question.
There were abolitionists in the North & South, and secessionists in the North & South (too bad New England didn't have the guts to follow through at the Hartford Convention), but I wonder how many were Southern abolitionist secessionists? I firmly believe I would have had to share that label with the leader of the Rebel Alliance, Admiral Ackbar.
I too will refrain from anymore history conjecture after this post (thought THT, I'll happily continue this civil discussion through email if you wish as my email should now be listed), but I will say this before I go.
In the end, Lincoln obviously felt he had to free the slaves to save the Union, hence the Emancipation Proclamation. Early in the war, he tried to straddle a very thin political line, but by late 1862, he realized he could no longer deny what the war was about. He knew the Union could not be saved without first destroying slavery.
Also, it wasn't Lincoln's invasion of Virgnia that caused that state to secede, but rather the call for 75,000 volunteers after Ft. Sumter.
Ephemeral also brings up an interesting point with the poor southern solider fighting for slavery to protect their own economic well being (this pretty well parallels today's stance towards immigration I think), even if I think there is a bit more to it than that.
Maybe there is more to the Civil War than just slavery, but it is the core issue that began the conflict. We can talk about State's Rights and the Southern Way of Life all we want, but these are phrases are basically just another way of saying slavery.
I don't beleive white southern soliders were evil, but the government they fought under was. That govt. dreamed of a slave empire spreading westward and southward towards Cuba.
I'm not saying this to disparage the South. I'm very proud of my Southern heritage and the Civil War is a big part of that. But I have no problem seeing that we have some reprehensible things in our past. I love the South, warts and all.
Either way, I promise that is the last I will say on the subject today unless someone wants to email me.
...and then there's always the free State of Winston, who was the hillbilly Switzerland.
cincy - I trust you and I'm sure that on this topic 99% of the time what you say is true. Hot Wife is an anomaly, I can't tell you the number of times I've bought her nice gifts (including jewelry and furniture) and she's wound up returning/exchanging them. This even happened when I was told specifically what to buy (complete with printout from the store's website), where to get it and how much it cost. We've since settled on the method where she buys what she wants and I just get her cards and go to dinner. It's largely a win-win, she gets what she wants and I don't have to go shopping.
Norm,
Sounds like a great solution. Mr. Cincy and I have a similar understanding. Hope the Wii brings you all the good things you are dreaming of :)
We don't have a game system at the house and I'd been thinking of getting a Wii figuring it'd be a better solution for F4*. Now, this "news" just gives more in the Plus column for a Wii.
my wife wanted a Wii for christmas but i insisted on the PS3. oh, well.
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but with the Wii games you do want to stay a good distance away from the other person in a 2 person game. Those little Wii sticks can make a bruise. Just sayin.
PF, Junkyard Wars comes on daily on the science channel. It is quality television.
Oh. I haven't seen it in years. Are they still taping new episodes?
Speaking of Wii and PS3 and comparing the two. I am researching electronics for the condo since Tylerson will me moving and taking all of his toys. We want to get a game system, but not sure what. The advantage to the PS3 is having the blu ray player. But, the Wii seems like it might be more fun for groups on football weekend - the PGAD issue aside.
Recommendations?
The Wii is more fun for groups, but the PS3 has blu-ray...oh, wait, you summed it all up already.
i love my PS3. i love my Madden10 & my MLB10. makes me happy. very happy.
Thanks, PF, that was very helpful :)
I'll stick with my 360, especially now that normal blue ray players are becoming more reasonably priced.
I have no ps3 or wii, so I'm of no use. Not that there was much question about that beforehand.
E-Bro - you have mail.
the graphics on the PS3 are superior b/c of the blu ray stuff. there seem to be more group-type games on the wii. you can still get many of the same sports titles on the wii as you can on the ps3 but the graphics aren't as good and the gameplay is different b/c of the controller thingies. i think it really depends on your gaming audience cincy. a Wii may be more fun for family gameday/tailgate weekends on the plains.
LGG Byron just ate a Wendy's burger, and now the entire house is polluted with that nasty onion smell.
I might do that, scottie, and go with the Wii, especially like E-Bro said, the blu rays are coming down so much in price.
Thanks, all.
Thanks THT. Just saw that. Might be a little bit before a get a chance to respond.
P.S.
I'm not a big fan of the smell of onions either.
360 > PS3. Why? Because that's the one I have. I also have a Blu Ray player.

I hate bananas and I hate pudding, but I hate banana pudding.
I have no idea how that works out.

well, I'm off to pay taxes and then read some 1860s newspapers. No, nothing to do with today's HABOTN History class. Trying to find info about when this 55x83 inch map of NC was published. My guess is 1860.
map linky, take two
PF, I don't believe they are shooting new Junkyard Wars episodes, which is why I think Redneck Wars would be very successful. Little competition.
As for the Civil War, it was not primarily about slavery. Like everything else, it was primarily about money. Getting rid of slavery was just a side benefit. Notice that after the war the former slaves weren't much better than slaves anyway because they were poor and had to be share croppers. No, the Civil War was about money associated with the use of slaves, which made the southern states rich. The north wanted a piece of the pie.
As for states rights, that is also an asoect of it and the Civil War was part of what caused Washington to start ignoring the constitution.
There are modern forms of slavery, but now it is government sponsored.
So what else is going on?
Well in other news Seanzie, due to pollen and other stuff, I can't seem to breath and it feels like my eyes and teeth are about to pop out of my head because of the pressure.
I hear ya, tommy. I've actually been on allergy medicine the last 14 days, a brand new occurrence for me in the spring time.
I still have a scratchy throat and watery eyes.
Tommy, one word: Drugs!!!
That don't do drugs stuff is a load of crap. Do the right drugs should be the saying.
I'm wondering how close I'm coming to od'ing, Steve. I'm on afrin, zyrtec, allegra, and dayquil so far. I'm more than open to suggestions right now, too. If I can't sleep through the night again tonight, I think I may just have to break down and go see a doc.
Seanzie, this stuff just decided to rear its ugly head the last couple of days. Everything was fine until we got back from Vegas.
eat a taco
Nahh I better not say it.
What sort of taco? I personally like soft tacos.
You know who couldn't freely eat tacos before the confederates lost the Civil War? Slaves. That's who.
i had a combo at Taco Bell today. crunchy tacos. yummy.
What do ya'll think of this new taunting rule for 2011?
If a player taunts before scoring, it is a live ball foul and results in a 15 yard penalty from the spot of the foul.
Ya gotta love free eats
FREE TACO!
Wells, I have a feeling the interpretation of taunting (like LSU v UGA last year) may possibly get stretched to the limit.
MYTD...
Try a Neilmed sinus rinse. It sounds painful, but it's not at all. I use it frequently with great effect.
Sounds retarded wells
I'm with Scottie on the Civil War. I think the Rebellion was totally justified standing against the Empire.
Ehyou, where would one find such a thing?
I like barbacoa and lots of cheese on a crunchy taco shell at Chipotle.
mmmmmmmmmm tacos
ehyou,
Plus, it looks funny.
Most any drug store or Walmart. They're pretty common.
All I will say is that I hope it doesn't cost us a game.
I was going to have zaxby's, it now looks like taco bell will be my choice.
Followed by the daily dose of Denny's around 2 in the morning.
I wasn't familiar with barbacoa, but it sounds fantastic from the wiki description.
alrighty then, I'll try it. Thanks for the tip.
Anybody got anything other than a sinus rinse? Just checking before I get my sinuses rinsed.
MYTD, if it's developed far enough you won't have any choice but the doc and some heavy prescrips.
As Thomas Jefferson so eloquently said, "The tree of liberty is refreshed from time to time with the blood of puppets and midgets."
It's time to take down Saban.
Quite the conversation today, Hotties. Never know what you will get here...nice.
Give me Liberty...or give me Saban's head on a platter.
Eduardo ... I'll take both.
and a taco with barbacoa
as Axl Rose once sang, "I don't need your Civil War...."
As everyone knows, that's where the "What we've got here is a failure to communicate" quote comes from, scottie b.
"Which is the way he wants it....well, he gets it."
The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.
Gotta love me some Thomas Jefferson. Plus he built a really cool house. Too bad the tie failed.
I have no problem with taunting rules if it is really taunting. I do have problems with some of the stuff that is called taunting.
I also agree with celebration penalties when it comes to doing almost choreographed routines that delay play. Jumping up and down is one thing. Break dancing in the endzone is another.
Constitution, schmonstitution. The government does what it wants.
This thread is funny.

THINGS/PEOPLE MORE SCARY THAN CAM NEWTON
OK, Sensi, you have a weird sense of humor. And it should be Things scarier than Cam, not "more scary". That bugs me.
I know you all are waiting with bated breath to hear how Auburn's Equestrian Team is doing in the NCAAs. As a team, they don't compete until tomorrow. Some individual events today, but no results yet.
I know, Cincy. It bugged me too but I didn't want to take license to fix the author's work.
Glad I wasn't waiting. I'll wait tomorrow, I guess.
Question for you guys. How much do you care about the decor of your home? Mr. CIncy is good if there is a couch to sit on, a TV for the occasional watching and a place to eat. He could care less about styles or colors. If I like it, he likes it. (Although he is in love with our Tempurpedic mattress!)
I am helping Tyler with furnishings for his new apartment and it is hysterical. I never realized he had such opinions about his surroundings. This is the first space he has gotten to decorate all on his own. I must say I am very impressed with his sense of style. I love that he is letting me help him!
I laughed at the Jersey Shore guys. That's a quality thread. I'd still punch those posters in the nose, though.
i'm pretty picky too cincy. of course, mrs. scottie is fanatical. our decor is pretty good, though. she's good at it.
ummmmm...I don't want it girly, but I don't have a strong opinion, no. My wife might not agree with that statement, though.
I guess he is his mother's son. I have always been like scottie's wife, pretty fanatical about my house and how I want things done and to look. I suppose I passed those traits on to my son.
Holy Crap, City Search is reporting that there are still Bon Jovi available in Atlanta tonight, and tickets have dropped to $15. That's cheap.
i bet Eddie is running people over to get those Bon Jovi tickets in the ATL. haha.
OOOOHHHHH, WE'RE HALFWAY THERE....
come on Eddie, sing it with me!
SEC interview with Hunter Morris
Funny that the Outback Bowl staff would have a luncheon at a Flemming's Steakhouse.
Whoa! Livin' on a Prayer!
J/k I'm not really a Bon Jovi fan.
Nevermind. Same company. It loses it's irony.
I think it is hilarious that the fine people @ Tidesports.com are taking time out of their day to comment on our new QB.
gimme that apostrophe back.
Puppet Hour. AGGGHHHH.
Guess everyone ran for their lives.
I'm too stunned to post.
Apparently you're not. You posted.
Oh the humanity!
I think PF called a preemptive puppet hour. All the usual suspects are gone.
Cincy - I care enough that I would tell MrsTHT if I didn't like the decor, but not nearly enough to be involved in establishing the decor. Fortunately, MrsTHT has superb taste. The only thing I'd change is to put more maps on the walls ;-)
It's almost time for a second flip!
Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't.
It could be...
Who knows, really?
I think it might be...
I can almost smell it...
It stings the nostrils...
400.
Three in a row!
Anddddd
I don't think blogger is working.
The steal!
AHHHH Booyah!
Actually, I'm on top.
Crap. The steal went to you. I had won on my computer. Then I refreshed and lost.
Blogger is delayed.
