Practice report, 4/14
Hey everyone. Practice has ended. Here's what we learned:
- Auburn scrimmaged today. WR Darvin Adams was held out because of a shoulder injury, though he expects to participate in A-Day.
- Adams said DeAngelo Benton had a good day.
- The offense scored at least three touchdowns. They scored two early, which included a long pass from Cam Newton to Benton. He beat T'Sharvan Bell for that touchdown.
- Assistant coach Trooper Taylor was impressed with that play: ``We talk about catching balls in windows. That was a peep-hole. I don't have a drill for that."
- WR Kodi Burns caught a touchdown pass from Newton.
- Wideout Ralph Spry Jr. had a fumble and a touchdown. ``He has to get the track mentality out and become a football player," Taylor said.
- Taylor then turned around and said he's been most impressed with Spry and Blake this spring.
- Taylor said the weird scoring system of 2009 has been ditched. He said the teams will be mixed up (not 1s versus 2s) to provide some different challenges for players.
- LB Craig Stevens (left) said the defense wasn't up to the challenge initially. Once the scrimmage developed a tempo, though, he said the offense began to lose its verve.
- Taylor said the scrimmage mirrored last season (quick start, late struggles) and he let players know about it. He was not happy.
- He indicated that one of the interceptions was because WR Emory Blake made a mistake.
- Stevens said he's been impressed with the way Newton has handled business of the field. The quarterback, he said, arrived without arrogance and quietly worked to build trust.
- Adams said he likes watching Newton play because he brings the deep ball back into the fold. Asked if Newton was the only quarterback capable of throwing deep passes accurately, Adams quickly covered his tracks and said they're all capable.
- There were at least two interceptions -- one each from Ikeem Means and Drew Cole.
- Defensive coordinator Ted Roof (left) said nobody (reporters, fans) should infer things about his rotations based on what's happening right now. We learned the other day that Jonathan Evans was running with the No. 1 defense at strong-side linebacker. I still think that's significant, but Roof insists it isn't. It's important to remember that Daren Bates may fit in here somewhere.
- Roof said Bates, who is out with a shoulder injury, has pieced together a "good mental spring."
- Wes Byrum has been happy with his kicking so far this spring. He hopes to handle both field goals and kickoffs this fall.

Get ahold of yourself, seanzie.
I know. I'm completely out of control.
PapaJohn bowl to be played Jan 8. BCSNCG to be played Jan 10. I'm sorry, but what part of the "not wanting to extend the season" argument is valid now for the school presidents who don't want a playoff?
Living on a prayer is awful. I should buy a $15 ticket just to go boo him tonight for creating that garbage. Any coincidence the football level of okay has deterioated to match the song.
EVERYBODY COOL OUT!
Livin' on a Prayer needs to die.
"i hate john bon jovi, but i hate his music more." --jimmy pop ali of the bloodhound gang
I dunno, Living on a Prayer is kinda awesome.
I guess Living on a prayer is awesome if mediocrity is acceptable and expected.
When I've been drinking, I sing along with most of this list.
Anyone who thinks that is a ninny.
i'm now 0-2 at hamburger king. they are closed until 5/3. the last time i tried a year ago, they had gone fishing. is it really worth the effort jet?
has anyone seen the new ncaa taunting rule? apparently refs can now take away touchdowns if they determine "taunting" has occurred after the play is over.
please try it for the first time at a night game in tiger stadium to cost lsu the game.
what if byrum had to kick that fg at uf a third time? under this rule, he would have.
dumb.
Auburn Plainsmen report on Coach Barbee. I'm glad he is out meeting students on campus.
*The Auburn Plainsman.
PF- it must take one to know one I suppose.
Chip ...
Yes.
Chip- that rule is just plain stupid. I have no problem with the way the rule is currently. The NCAA keeps on making rules that hurt the game, not help it. Also, please being back the incidental face mask and move the kickoffs back to the 35.
Chip, it only takes the score away if it occurs before the play is over. It"s a spot foul.Celebrations in the endzone are still tacked on to the kickoff....
Eddie, I doubt it.
1. 5 yard face mask is a must.
2. New wedge rule intent good. We'll see about application.
3. "Live ball" taunting rule is fixing a problem that doesn't exist.
PF- the use of the word Ninny is proof you are one.
This new taunting rule is absurdly and stupidly absurd... While they're are it, how about implementing a 5 yard penalty for clapping, or smiling on the sidelines...15 yards unsportsmanlike if your fans cheer...
This is a traveshamockery!
On a brighter note... if you haven't seen the list of recruits who will be on campus (some starting tonight) for this weekend.... 1 word... WOW!
This isn't even BigCat... and I don't know if you can assemble a larger group of 'BigCats' on the same weekend...
I think it's sad they even had to consider the taunting rule, much less implement it. I admired Chris Evert's emotional control during her matches. I know I'm in the minority on this issue, but I don't care for all that emotional outburst stuff. Just play football. Until the game is over, there's nothing to celebrate.
It's a game... you should be allowed to have fun...
I agree that sometimes players go over the line with 'taunting' and unreasonable emotional outbursts... but the way this rule is written, SEC officials can severely alter games. This will end up being a very very bad thing... wait and see, the first time one of these calls drastically affects the outcome of a game... or worse gives $puat a win...
If I was a SEC official, I'd consider $PUAT players to be taunting every time they exhaled.
So would the new taunting call cause UT to have another kick to beat bama?
This new rule gives the bad official a lot of leqay to be even worse. And it will happen many times when but in paly 2011.
I agree THT that the time to celebrate is when the game is over. How many times did we celebrate at the Outback Bowl?
My best friend growing up was the kind of person who always laughed if someone clumsily tripped and fell. I'd rather know if the person is ok. I really don't like players congratulating their teammate for a vicious hit when the opponent is lying on the ground. I just think it's disrespectful and unsportsmanlike.
Unless it's a UAT player on the ground ;-)
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the hard hitting at all. Just help them up after you decleat them.
Digger - just enough!!! That was a blast sitting with the Hotties. I'm so glad you were there. Best bowl I've ever attended without my dad or MrsTHT.
Ok... yes, that's the only bowl game I've ever attended without my dad or MrsTHT.
That funny looking word was suppose to be leeway

Insane in the membrane.
comment - watching hockey!
I think everyone is tired after fighting the Civil War earlier.
and the War Between the States
Welcome Comment Deleted. You're my new favorite hottie. Way better than that bum jet.
Was the Civil War re-enacted on HABOTN today? Who won this go 'round?
I miss so much when I try to work.
I cannot believe that my Cardinals allowed the lowly Astros their first win of the season against them today... despicable.
Habs & Caps heading to overtime. Very few things in life are better than playoff overtime hockey.
ATL and Huddy are up 6-2. Yee Haw.
THT...you've got mail.
My sincere apologies if my conversation starter today about the Civil War offended anybody.
I know politics is a taboo subject on this blog, and I honestly thought we were having a historical discussion. None of my feelings towards a historical event are viewed through a political lens (but an objective one), but I fear that that is how it was perceived.
From now on, I'll refrain from the broaching of any such subjects and talk exclusively about Auburn sports...and from time to time, soccer.
Again...apologies.

Ebro...
Are you under the impression that people read your posts?
Just kidding dude. I don't think I've ever seen over a 3 on a 10 pt offensive scale here, so you're good.
I was under the impression that people read my post, but cared absolutely nothing about what I said.
Maybe that would be a good thing. :)
Les Habitantes!
One day, dear children, in the after a while, perhaps we'll be able to fulfill Isaiah's prophecy.
" ... they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."
NINNY! NINNY! NINNY!
never said or typed that word before in my life. it's fun though. i have no idea what i means. oh, well.
Hudson piched great today for our Bravos! he should be 2-0. oh, well.
i'll be leaving knoxville at lunch to head towards the lovliest village. can't wait!
E-Bro,
I didn't see anyone get upset and it looked like a good discussion. I'm sorry I missed it.
OK, against my better judgment, I'm allowing my elder daughter (13 going on 30) to accompany one of her friends on a weekend jaunt to TLVOTP. While I slave away to keep a roof over her head, she'll be enjoying the warm April breeze as it blows through the stands at J-H while she watches A-Day.
Her Facebook status now reads:
Auburn tomarrow{: meet all my playas. War eagle my friends
I'm so jealous (and so proud). I'll get her to work on her typing skills.
Just keep promoting Auburn as being the place for her "playas", Freep.
Miller- The lead Qb is coming in. A couple of the RB's we want are coming. Wish the kid from Fla was coming, but even though he is a RB in HA, AU is recruiting him as an athlete. i think his last name is Hart. It is bog deal, IMO, that Reese Dismukes is in AU Saturday. i think that is good news for Au come the 21st when he commits somewhere.

I think Au takes only one Qb, 2 RB, a couple WR and then load up on OL, DL, LB, DB.
i'm with you wtc. i'm curious which qb will pull the trigger first. the list of offers is pretty impressive. there are some i would like more than others but they all seem like good prospects from what i've read. hart the rb i want. reminds me of prothro.
oh, i wish i was in dixie, away...away...in dixie land i'll take my stand to live and die in dixie...away...away...away down south....in.....dixie...
away down soooooooooooooooooooooouth, in dixie!
not going to start that cw conversation again, but political correctness has eliminated one of the prettiest songs about the south. i haven't heard Dixie in years. But the song is etched in my memory from hearing it as a child.
Old Man River?
There's going to be a lot of beef on the Plains this weekend...
The Robinson kid from Louisiana is making the trip with Trovon Reed... rumors of Jamar Lewter (huge OT from DC) being on campus this weekend...
The big OL from Arky, Brey Cook, is already on campus...
As is Blakely, RB from FLA, is already on campus... both will stay through Sunday.
Frazier and Uzomah are scheduled to be in town... Many other top player scheduled to be in town.
I'm with you for the most part, WTC... I think they only want 1 QB and 1 RB... if they can land 2 special ones, they'll take them. They're well on their way to a big time OL class... I think they finish with 6, maybe 1 WR, maybe a TE... the rest on the D side of the ball...
Rose and Chris Jones are close... Florence is a strong lean...
oh miller...you tease me. i see two rb's in au's class this year. still need lb's. always will take top dl's if we can get them.
but wait. doesnt satan on the other side of the state get whomever he wants. Well, not if the ncaa is breathing down their necks, taking away the REL advantage. AU will hold their own against the evil doers again this year. keep hate alive
I am in Auburn and it is beautiful!!! Wish you were all here with me.
E-Bro, I thought we had a very civil discussion earlier today. I didn't see anyone getting upset or irrational (as I am sometimes known to do). Yes, we concentrate mainly on sports here, but I don't think a little deviation every once in awhile is going to hurt us. I thought you stated your thoughts well and didn't slam anyone else for theirs. We keep each other sharp.
OK, now back to loving life in Auburn!!
I think that if one of the 4 QB's Au is after commits, we will slow play everyone else. I personally think it is the Frazier kid from Arky. Would like Uzomah, but he is huge and can probably play another position.
I think they want Hart as an athlete and then take one other RB maybe two. Unfortunately the big back from GA is not going to look AU's way. If Au gets the other two, they will be fine. I know it is early, but the *'s on the board (heavy leans to AU) are pretty awesome. Long way until February.
cincy. having a man weekend at the lake that includes golf and a-day. going to au always feels like coming home.
what i read regarding todays blog on the cw was, well, pretty civil.. for those cw buffs, one of the greatest resources is "The Civil War, A Narrative" by Shelby Foote. Its a history book written like a novel, and written from the southern point of view. very few civil war books are written from the southern view. most from the northern view. Footes is actually three books. I highly recommend it.
E-Bro was talking about me. I get frustrated with people who don't understand history the way that I know it happened ;-)
ok, we're going to have some free playoff hockey in Vancouver with Canucks and Kings tied at 2 after 3.
well, the free hockey didn't last very long :-(
I should probably call it a night. Sweet AU dreams, Hotties!
E bro, I enjoyed the civil way discussion earlier, even though I was too late to participate.
So please, for the sake of good southern boys everywhere. Keep talking about the Civil War, but drop the soccer talk.
Good morning Hotties.
blogger says I'm looking at posts 601-482 of 482.
I'm not sure I understand that method of counting.
Rise and shine, Hotties!!!
WARRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
Morning all.
Sponge is dead on about Shelby Foote's masterpiece, "The Civil War: A Narrative". Great history storytelling.
I'm craving a serious breakfast... Anyone want to drive to Lakeland FL and meet me.
Hey Hotties,
Support Shon Coleman and the fight against childhood cancer. Check out the tribute fund which I've set up to donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
http://stj.convio.net/goto/wareagleshon
Josiah,
You are doing a wonderful thing for St. Jude and all that hospital does. I've seen your campaign from the bunker on rivals and wish you nothing but success with this.
Morning folks.
Civil War discussions here are fine. Soccer discussions are not.
Carry on.
During my childhood, before I was honored to meet Norm, my best friend's parents were Elvis devotees. No trip to their lake cabin on a weekend evening was complete (no TV available) without listening to Elvis 8-tracks. And his mama was sure to shed a tear or two when Elvis crooned "In the Ghetto," but more importantly "An American Trilogy."
"An American Trilogy" is great work. I do not care for "In the Ghetto" no matter who I hear singing it.
Jet - was this lake cabin next to a very low clearance bridge? If so, I was there with them one weekend when a boater didn't throttle down soon enough and seriously regretted it.
If I was rich, I'd have a band follow me around playing the Peter Gunn theme.
At least you're picking a good theme song.
Hey, Hotties!
Happy Friday and A day weekend! I wish I could be there tomorrow.
Another good CW novel is Confederates by Thomas Keneally, the author of Schindler's Ark (basis of Schindler's List). It is about common soldiers serving under Stonewall Jackson. Keneally used primary sources for the main part of the story and the fictional characters are the common folk.
Ehyou ... I'm saving my money to have Morgan Freeman follow me around and provide the voice over for my life.
I am really offended right now.
In response to being offended, the HABOTN entry for today will postponed and the comments section removed.
Thanks,
The PC Police
"A" day weekend and I will be further away from Auburn than I would be if at home so I hope to see it on ESPN-U.
The War Between the States not the Civil War. Two reasons 1) there was nothing Civil about this war and 2) the definition of a Civil War. So many reasons for a war and so few poiticians that will fight in a war makes for a lot of deaths.
Fin. 500.
Ain't 500 and ain't fin.
