Scrimmage report, 4/10
Hey everyone. HABOTN spies, in concert with our friends from The Gold Mine, have snagged semi-exclusive photos from today's scrimmage.
Please enjoy:
Courtesy of Auburn's official Twitter page*, we know that Cam Newton scored on a short run, Mario Fannin scored on a 65-yard run and Demond Washington intercepted a pass.
*Auburn tweeting information from the scrimmage while concurrently barring media from the event is lame, weak, duplicitous and wrong.
*The scrimmage lasted 80 plays. "We got accomplished what we wanted."
*On Mario Fannin's long TD run: ``It was a really nice run. He caught a crease in the defense, did a really nice job cutting back across the pursuit. There were some really nice runs in there where the tailbacks -- their vision was really good."
*On the QBs: It appeared they were really high-percentage with their completion rate today.
*On the QB rotation: ``We rotated them basically with how the flow of the scrimmage went. If you were working with the orange group, you'd say with the orange group -- whether it was a three-and-out or an 80-yard drive."
*Chizik praised Emory Blake for making people miss today.
*On Cam Newton's short touchdown run being a harbinger of Auburn's future short-yardage plans: "He's a big, physical guy. You have your hands full trying to tackle him. Him running in the open field, that could be challenging for defenses overall."
OTHER NOTES OF INTEREST
*Walk-on DB Woody Parramore intercepted a pass.
*Newton rushed for a score and hit Darvin Adams on a screen pass for another.
*Demond Washington intercepted two passes. We believe they were both off Neil Caudle.
*We believe Clint Moseley threw a touchdown pass. That's based on anecdotal evidence.
*Coaches universally praised Emory Blake and DeAngelo Benton.
*Surprise, surprise -- offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said he hasn't made a decision about which quarterbacks will leave spring in the top spots.

Semi exclusive photos!
There is much to learn from that photo.
The dedication is appreciated.
The Twitter has some photos too. Newton with McCalebb in the backfield, Trotter with Aycock. No mention of Caudle or Moseley. Hm?
The Twitter feed also misspells Auburn player names. Annoying.
Who'da thunk that the information age would devolve into paranoid info control?
I suppose past abuses by the media could arguably justify some paranoia, but for AU to Twitter the few details that beatwriters could glean and report fom post practice interviews is greedy.
It doesn't capitalize half the time either. This is the "official" Twitter?
Jay you are the man! But you knew this already!:)
nc will not be the MAN if he cannot get the INT's under-control....
Neil's in trouble. That's my opinion.
Neil will be a fine coach one day... He may want to consider going for his masters degree and becoming a Grad Assistant coach...
I don't expect Caudle to become a coach. He's destined for other callings, I believe. I mean that in a good way.
Good for him...
He seems like a bright kid, I expect him to be successful in whatever arena he chooses.
From everything I've read this spring it is clear (as can be) that Newton is going to be a star (and our starter) and that Caudle just doesn't have what it takes to be the QB at Auburn. I wish him well and look forward to a bright future with Newton. We could have a few "Newton to Blake" or "Newton to Benton" in out future.
I guess I don't understand why people think Caudle is in the picture to be the starter.
Seniors don't get 1/4 of the snaps in the spring. He was highly recruited, and he appears to be a nice young man. But he's not it.
G, any news on Barbee assistants or on which players may not be returning?
CHB, I can't get any information from basketball yet. It's just Barbee ... and I haven't yet established a meaningful relationship with him.
That will change later this month.
Caudle should have joined the marines. He can't stop tossing it to the opposing guys.
Newton can't hit the broad side of a barn. Fannin continues with fumbilitis. Zeimba arrived to practice early. He has discipline issues.
It does not matter if Ziemba had 5 false starts last year. According to the mathematical genius PDWT, that makes it one a game. Counting must be hard.
This entire post is directed to some of the 'Auburn fans' that think it's cute to be punk. It's relatively easy to be classless.
wtf... the baseball game is blacked out on ESPN3.com
I'm here at the game, though I'm not planning to write about it.
Just working on football. I was at J-H anyway. I'll update as long as I'm here.
Game started at 0-0.
The game's on SportsSouth if you have that. Charter 35 over here. Georgia's spring game is blacked out too.
Team's looking better so far. At least it isn't 6-0.
Correction: 34. G-Day is 35.
thanks... I hope we can have a better showing than yesterday
Neil Caudle. Building Science Major (per media guide).
That's an interesting career choice.
Auburn up 1-0, bot 1.
Bases loaded ... bot 1.
No outs.
My uncle graduated from AU with a building science degree. Architecture without the art. Should serve him better than Psychology or something. Not a walk in the park major by any means.
Walked Caldwell.
2-0 Auburn. Bases still loaded. Still no outs.
Wild pitch. 3-0. No outs.
I've got a BS in BS. It's a good degree and has served me well.
Walked him. Bases loaded again. Still no outs.
Very interesting, Jay. Those INTs will likely seal someone's fate, probably Caudle's.
Why does it seem that walk-ons have a knack for INTs these days?
4-0. Now there's two outs.
Inning over. Auburn up 4-0.
Good way to start the game...
Jay,
Why did AU change pitchers?
Lemme see, Cincy.
JLJ is not injured.
It's a coach's decision. That's all I can get you for now.
I'm on my way out. Piece to all.
Well that decision is not looking so good to me, but I'm sure I don't know everything about the situation.
4-1 now.
Weird.
Even if you do decide to pitch by committee... which I understand... you would want to let your starter get through the lineup 1 full time before switching it up...
Makes no sense to me...
JayG...I say this with a limitless amount of respect for you and what you do, and I understand what it bothers you specifically, but as an Auburn fan, the buttoned down nature of Auburn football's operations just doesn't bother me a whole lot.
If this were an issue of national security or conspiracy, I might feel differently.
I think you run the finest sports blog on the net, and that has been the case all along with or without Chizik's close to the vest nature. I feel like you put up great content regardless and the quality of this blog hasn't suffered one bit as a result.
This is just my very humble and subjective opinion, so I understand if I'm in the minority.
What up Hotties?
JLJ has to be hurt... you don't pull your starter after 1 hitless inning and then leave the reliever in for 2 innings after he gave up a run...
Yo, yo, yo...I have the house to myself this weekend. Well, it's just me and the dog. Yardwork is done, the rest of the weekend will be comprised of watching golf and baseball.
Apparently, I have HABOTN to myself too.
AU 8 LSU 2
bottom of the 6th. AU hitting the ball well today. Mummey with a 2 run homer. 4 rbi today.
9-2 after 6.
More importantly, WTC... AU is playing solid defense so far this weekend....
"*Auburn tweeting information from the scrimmage while concurrently barring media from the event is lame, weak, duplicitous and wrong."
Just make this the headline quote of the blog already. It's a recurring theme. It's worth the prime spot.
EBro .. I concur, so count me in your majority.
Lefty is putting on a clinic at the Masters. He just shot -5 over the last 3 holes.
My BSC degree has served me well. AU has one of the top 4 Construction Management programs in the USA.
If NC indeed threw 2 more ints today you have to imagine his chances are dwindling.
Aero. ..Seems to me that the punk factor Although not gone, has lessoned. Might wanna ease up a bit.
It is beginning to seem like my caution in terms of Newton may not be needed. I am becoming very impressed with the way he has spoke of the QB competition. It is far different than what happened with Kodi and Caudle last season. I felt each of them was trying to act like they had won the job. I like Cam's approach of basically just saying I am competing and trying to get better. The kid doesn't seem to have a big head.
Am enjoying the Masters. The CBS coverage has been even handed and only about golf.
Miller good job jinxing us with the defense thing haha, sean ray pitched great, good outings for both sean ray and slade smith last night, looking forward to tomorrow when dayton starts, hopefully he'll continue being undefeated against the SEC
Aero - Did you go to all of Cam's games last year? Or did you go to the scrimmage today? You seem to be an authority of his accuracy. Are you his daddy, or his coach, or what?
Just got back from The Funky Fish Fry. It was an event to benefit Autism. My wife works at a nonprofit Autistic school in the Bham are. The event was fun but really HOT.
G, hopefully you can build a good relationship with Barbee.
I agree with E-bro on the content of this blog and the job you do G. I know it makes your job harder but I have absolutely no problem with the limited access this staff allows at practice. Now I might fell differently if my job depended on it.
Aero...WTH was that all about. Who are you trying to call out on here?
JGT Channel 33/40 out of the Ham had some video of the practice on their 5:00 sports. Did they get to see the practice and you guys did not. If so that is totally unfair.
I enjoyed swtiching between the baseball game and the Masters. This has indeed been an interesting Masters. Love Auburn beating LSU. They said it broke an eight game string without a win against them.
According to Coleman's mom he is cancer free. That is pretty amazing. Just a little over 2 weeks ago 60% of his blood cells were cancerous and now there is no sign of cancer.
In case you are reading this we wish you well Shon and hope to see you in orange and blue very soon.
I think some of you might be misconstruing the point of Aero's post.
i thought Aero's post was funny.
I have no problem with AU closing practices. I also agree completely with JGT's comments on the AU tweets.
JGT - thanks for the practice report.
CHB, thanks for the update on Shon Coleman.
Jay G, thanks for doing what you can given the rules being what they are.
Rise and shine Hotties!!!
WARRRRR EAGLE!!!!!
LEMIEUX!!!
Sportswriter Tate's article in today's MA.
JAGR!!!
ok, the rest of y'all need to wake up and take the reins. I'm out for a while.... maybe.
This blog has not been abandened it just appears so. Our peeps are busy with Sunday things and will return.
I hope.
Good late morning all. Leaving for Gonzales, LA in about 10 minutes. Do they have internet in La? I hope so. Talk to you all later.
Morning HABOTN!
As most of us really like Caudle as a person, It is a shame he is really not going to pan out as an elite quarterback or even a starter. With his two alleged interceptions yesterday, I think the writing is on the wall.
He sounds like a smart and strong leader. I am confident he will succeed in his future, whatever that may be.
WE
Caudle, not man enough to win the QB job...j/k. I think we all know who the QB will be, the real race is for numero dos, that's number 2 for the uninitiated.
Based upon Caudle's comments about how his contributions to Demond's highlight reel, I can't see why he hasn't been voted off the island yet.
I haven't seen anything to indicate whether Trotter or Moseley will be the number 2, other than Jay's positive vibs on Moseley.
Why is it that golfers wear truly hideous clothes?
Caudle's experience will serve him well in other endeavors. He's a competitor.
Masters Sunday. God is truly smiling upon the South this afternoon.
One of my favorite days in sports.
JGT...
Whats up with Dante Aycock? (sp)
dl-what are you hearing?
This comment has been removed by the author.
True that Bellefay. Its a great day in Auburn, and in Augusta.
I do admire how Caudle has continued to compete and not just quit or transferred. Transferring would not fix his issues, so I believe he has done what is best for him, which is taking advantage of the opportunity and getting a degree.
I am also very encouraged by Fannin's long run. We have been know for small quick defenses. Defenses like that may be susceptible to giving up yardage when faced with bigger offensive players, but not usually big chunks.
I am getting convienced that Fannin will be the feature back in 2010. Dyer will certainly play, but Fannin seems to have the experience/speed/quickness to get er done. Comparing Fannin to Tate, in some ways he could end up being better. My impression is that he is quicker, but not as strong. Both are fast so I am not sure who is the faster of the two.
COME ON FREDDIE!!!
Freddy's had too many near misses on the Front but he's making it interesting.
That other guy's making it interesting too after nearly self-destructing the first few holes.
Tiger is startin to look scary. As long as Westwood doesn't win I'll be happy. But I'd be stoked to see Couples win.
Where was Nick Watney the first 3 rounds.
Auburn and LSU are tied in the bottom of the 9th. CMac doubles to lead off, KP advances him to third with a single. No outs.
COME ON AUBURN
Watney has potential to be scary the rest of this year, he's a good player.
BEASLEY!!!
AU takes the series from LSU!
Squeeze bunt sends CMac in, AUBURN WINS!!!!
Didn't know Darvin changed his number to 90, THT.
That's great news, Cincy, even if it did mess up my efforts. Sorry about that, Scottie B.
WARRRR EAGLE!!!
Dear Leader - I think he's headed for a redshirt.
Great game by AU baseball today! Huge win over #3 and defending Nat'l Champs, LSU. Auburn takes the series 2 games to 1 for the weekend.
Good pitching, timely hitting and 0 errors on the weekend.
War Eagle!
Not to be a debbie downer, but we had 2-3 errors yesterday in the last two innings. Fortunately our lead was big enough to where they didn't matter.
For those of you who don't have NHL Center Ice, FS-Pittsburgh, or MSG, or maybe just for Penguins fans like me, the Penguins vs Islanders can be seen here in just a couple of minutes.
damn't freddie is falling off.
Sorry THT and wells,
Didn't see your posts till after I posted. Didn't mean to mess up Kennesaw or steal well's thunder!
Cincy - no need to apologize for Auburn enthusiasm! Evah!
You're right wells... I think if it had of been a closer game yesterday, those errors wouldn't have occurred... those were mental lapses.
But, for the most part, the D played well this weekend.
Jay G. If you are around. Heard Zack Clayton injured a knee in practice. Do you have any info? Any other injuries that are serious. (don't know if Clayton's is serious or not)
Injuries are one of my biggest concerns with this football team. Last season it looked like we would be deep at safety. By the end of the season, we were looking for safeties.
What a treat the Masters was.
Hooover!
Agreed Jet. What a great champion for this particular week.
Injuries are always a worry for any team.
Both Hoover and Arab HS bands were in yesterday's Cherry Blossom parade, which reminds me I need to update my avatar.
Baseball season is crankin, the Tigers just won a HUGE series against one of the best teams in the country, and we're talking about theorstical football injuries? No wonder this place has been so dead lately.
Let me first state that I'm glad Tiger is back. It's good to have golf back to normal.
But the moment we got when Phil won and went over and hugged his cancer stricken wife was pretty special by itself and a telling contrast between Phil's own personal life and that of Tiger's.
It was a nice moment.
Exactly Bro.
New thread UPZ.
