Auburn's regional is set

Hey everyone. I am on the road.

We now know that Auburn will play host to Clemson (No. 2 seed), Southern Miss (No. 3 seed) and Jacksonville State (No. 4 seed) in the NCAA Tournament, which begins later this week.

My best guess is that Auburn will be paired with Georgia Tech. If that's true and things hold to form and both AU and GT win their regionals, the two teams would meet in Atlanta a week from Friday with a trip to Omaha on the line.

As for this Friday, Auburn will play JSU at 6 p.m. The Clemson-USM game will be played at 2 p.m. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Brett Favre makes the trip. He's really into USM baseball.

UPDATE: I was right. Auburn and Georgia Tech are paired, though red-hot Alabama is the No. 2 in Tech's region. Yow.

Here's the complete Division I bracket

Can someone confirm the pairing Jay G is speaking of? Bama is in the Nerds' regional.

If you all go to the Clemson-JSU game, keep an eye out for Brett Favre.

Peter, you have two options.

You can either read the blog post where I say Auburn is paired with Georgia Tech.

OR ... you can look at the bracket yourself and see that Auburn is paired with Georgia Tech.

Have a nice day.

Oh. Sorry. I thought it said that you thought it was probable. Did I read it wrong, or was that changed? Can't seem to get the brackets on my phone and left the house before the selection show was over.

I'm a little nervous about potentially seeing the cousin humpers again. FWIW, that game would be in Auburn, assuming we both reach that point.

Clemson is potentially scary, they looked good in the ACC tourney.

Don't be nervous man. Auburn is the better team. While anything can happen in one game, we'll beat them more times than not.

Hola Hotties from the great (?) state of Pennsylvania. I had another airplane brush with fame today. I shared my jet with Hines Ward and sat right near him though we didn't talk on the plane. However, while on the train from the terminal to baggage claim I stood next to him and told him how happy I was the day his eligibility was up and he finally left the SEC. He seemed to get a kick out of that. I imagine most folks around here approach him with some stupid Big Ben comments or something.

4:31 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Ward caught a long TD pass early in the 4th qtr in their big comeback and overtime win in '96. That's enough to hold a grudge right there.

Blogger ehyou said...

He and I basically went through college together. Dude was good.

'96 was a kick to the gut or someplace a bit south of there. If memory serves me correctly, that was the very first OT game played after the rule went into effect.

He was good, that's why I was so glad he was gone.

So far from what I've seen, Washington, PA could be compared to...well, just insert your own town you like to look down on. Lots of people with very poor eating, dental and wardrobe habits. Of course, I've only been outside the hotel to go to a restaurant within walking distance. Matters aren't helped by the fact that my hotel is across the street from a Super WalMart.

After reviewing some of the brackets, it looks like AU has a tougher one than others hosting from the SEC. UF and ARK may have a much easier time of it in the opening rounds. IMO.

Wtc,

UF should have an easier draw. Arkansas, maybe, maybe not. If I'm not mistaken, Arkansas had a better overall record, which may have helped their rpi.

8:27 PM
Blogger wtc said...

PF-I figured that was the case. So how I never liked that idea of giving the teams with the best record the easiest route to the championship. I understand it is done that way, but it seems you get a true champion by having them play an overall better bracket than an easier bracket and may not being pressed to get to the big game.

8:35 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I will say i did not like the SEC tourney bracket either. Look at AU or OM chances of getting to the championship game. You would need a boat load of pitchers to get there. I think if AU had beaten OM, no way do they have the arms to beat LSU twice on Saturday. And if they did, do they have enough arms to throw on Sunday? And I know the best way to avoid that is to win all the way through, but it just seems like it is stacked against those that lose early.
That being said, I will be pulling for AU all the way through.

8:38 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Thinking of players AU 'had in the fold' but never got to campus.

Enrique Davis-many were thinking he was THE back AU needed. 2yrs at OM and 354 yards later, he is battling to get playing time.

Rodney Scott- Tub's recruit that left AU before he signed. Hasn't been the man at OM, but will battle for playing time this year.

Caleb King-Many had him coming to AU. He went to UGA and hasn't produced like the # rated back he was.

You never know how things turn out.

Wtc,

The SEC tourney is tough, no matter how you stack it. There was so little difference between 1 and 8 in a single game. I agree, it's next to impossible to come out of the losers bracket and beat an undefeated team. The only way to do it fairly and really get a grasp on the best team is to do an MLB style playoff. That's not going to happen with 8 teams, much less 64. It'd take all year.

6:40 AM
Blogger Jet said...

In re SEC tournament, lose the first day and you're done.

That's generally the way it is in any double-elimination baseball tournament -- particularly those with eight teams.

I'll be interested to see if the SEC will drop divisional play in basketball.

The fact that Ole Miss and MSU, a combined 0-8 against the East last year, "earned" first-round byes was a joke. That needs to be rectified.

I hope you all had a good weekend. It was busy--but a good busy-- for me, and I am having trouble getting motivated today.

Still hoping and praying someone can figure out a solution to this oil spill business.
