Auburn Regional Sorta Live V
Well, hello there, boys and girls.
We are once again sitting in a sticky press box at Plainsman Park. Your Tigers have taken the field, once again the home team in their own park. As you know, you'll have semi-live updates from the BIG ONE.
Avoid the clap ... and let's get going
CLEMSON v. AUBURN
CU Top 1: Tough start ... again. Clemson put a couple on and Kyle Parker, who also plays a little QB in his spare time, brought three in with a DONG to center. You might be interested to know that the wind is blowing out rather briskly to right. I'm guessing that won't be the last ball to leave the park tonight. First score: CU 3, AU 0
AU Btm 1: Not much. Gamache had a Ga-single up the middle and then worked his way around to third on wild pitches. That's the good news. Bad news: He didn't work himself home.
CU Top 2: The visiting Tigers have come to play. You gotta tip your hat to 'em. After that ending last night, they have every right to mail this in. Instead, they've just put two more on the board and chased AU starter Jon Luke Jacobs after just inning. Your score: CU 6, AU 0
AU Btm 2: Signs of life. Your Tigers put a three-spot on the board. Fradejas and Bryant had RBIs. The Clemson pitcher also got an RBI, since he walked one in. New score: CU 6, AU 3
CU Top 3: John Hinson has taken a little time off from "Wipeout" to hit a DONGER (Worked in a "Sixteen Candles" reference -- find that elsewhere). New score: CU 7, AU 3
AU Btm 3: A little bit closer. McElroy with an RBI double and another RBI hit for Bryant. New score: CU 7, AU 5
CU Top 4: Zilch.
AU Btm 4: Nothing on the board, but Brian Fletcher hit the best looking single you'll ever see. Bounced that baby off the wall.
CU Top 5: Clemson stretches it back out a bit. A run on a couple of hits. New score: CU 8, AU 5
AU Btm 5: And Auburn closes the gap again. Mummey with a DONG to right. Back to two. CU 8, AU 6
CU Top 6: A single, but no damage.
AU Btm 6: Ditto for Auburn -- single but no damage.
CU Top 7: You'll probably not remember the name Richie Shaffer in a few weeks, but he's very likely the guy that stomped on Auburn's super regional dreams. His double scored three. New score: CU 11, AU 6
AU Btm 7: A run crossed the plate, but a big opportunity missed. Fittingly, some guy had a goat behind the center field wall. There was also one on the base path. Last night's hero made two pretty big blunders -- either that or he was trying not to score. If so, well played, sir. Well played, indeed. New score: CU 11, AU 7
CU Top 8: A little action. Nothing anyone will remember.
AU Btm 8: Couple of tough breaks for the home team. Fletch F. Fletch's shot down the right field line could have been ruled either way. Ump called it foul. Might have been a mistake. Auburn's pitching coach certainly seemed to think so, as he was tossed for arguing and made quite a spectacle of himself. It was enjoyable. Morris then lined out and Gamache was doubled up in the process. AU still trails by four with one shot left.
CU Top 9: Bad news. Clemson put two more on the board and made a tough challenge that much harder. Three outs to go and the hometown Tigers need six to keep playing this season.
AU Btm 9: Somehow, Auburn didn't score. Ended with 18 hits and seven runs -- almost impossible.
Final Score: CU 13, AU 7

How many will we lose to the draft?
Too often we let how the season ends obscure our view of the entire body of work.
Boy, did you guys see the new iphone that was introduced today? No one really cared because of that whole gizmodo thing. Totally destroyed the iphone release.
Yeah, Bama's season was mediocre. They probably feel like bums for being in a Super-Regional.
New iPhone looks cool. Too bad Android beat them to all of the cool features.
That's right. UAT ended the season with the MNC, but they still suck.
Kidding, kidding...but I still hate 'em.
War Eagle! Great season for the AU Tigers!
FSJ - just realized today that "HTC Sync" won't with a Mac. Looks like I may go with the iPhone after all.
There is a reason the old saying is, "It's all in how you finish." and not, "It's all in how you compile(?)"
I think the leak of the new iphone probably cost Apple 2 billion dollars
...and PF comes up with a better UAT dig than me. Should have refreshed before I posted, I guess.
New iPhone will sell like crazy.
I'll probably get it at some point. The new Android devices are nice...especially the new one on Sprint. Too bad you have to sign up with them to use it.
they should always feel like bums, regardless of their season.
I say "it's all how you compile" pretty regularly. Are you saying it makes sense that it hasn't caught on? Man, I really wanted it to catch. Now I feel like an idiot.
I have a Razr from 2005. It still works.
Michael - I'm sure you can sacrifice some goats or Eurasians and feel smarter for doing so.
New iphone is badasssss... My upgrade eligibility comes up in July. I'll probably upgrade shortly after that, and sell my 3GS on ebay if I can...
Micahel - you obviously haven't tried dunking yours in a glass of chocolate milk. Or running over it with your car.
True, THT. Nothing helps the old self esteem quite like blood sacrifices.
weird; it's like Zookeeper was typing that last post.
Miller...
I just sold my 3GS in anticipation of the new one..
You can probably get near $500 for it.
THT - I actually did run over my old razr with a car, and it still worked for a couple of months after that. My current razr used to be my wife's. She gets to upgrade, i am stuck in 2005.
2.0 is less than 20 minutes from Disney World. According to my calculations, that's 70mph including stops. That ain't her momma's genes.
I like Sprint. It works here...not so much in your area, but I don't pay for roaming, so I don't care.
Played with the HTC Evo today. The screen is gigantictron without adding bulk or weight. Performed the same as my Moment online, but 4G was not available at the store. Nice HD camera. Really fast processing. Flash-lite pre-installed is cool (though I'm hearing I can do Flash 10 without having to have the faster processor).
If the iPhone had been in release 4 a year and a half ago, I would have switched to the AT&T devil. They we slightly ahead with release 1, which I will never get, and have been disappointing slow and losing ground ever since.
the phone I ran over was in lots of pieces. The one I fumbled (Scissum'd) into a glass of chocolate milk came out intact. Neither ever worked again.
Which iPhone is Wal-Mart selling for 97 bucks?
The 16 GB 3GS
This comment has been removed by the author.
FSJ, seriously? $500? Want to broker the sale for me?
I have an old blackberry I could use in the meantime...
How much could I get for my wife's 3G?
Clemson will host UAT... per Yahoo.
GO TIGERS!!! Faux or real.
I sold mine (Black 32 GB 3GS) for $475 and I've seen some go for higher.
I'd say the 3G would go in the $300 range, assuming it is in good condition.
I also sold an old blackberry tour I had for $200.
GSM phones get a premium because you can swap out SIM cards.
the 3GS is like new... and the 3G is in excellent condition....
I may have to get you to help broker the deal for me... I don't know my way around ebay... at least the selling side of things.
In order to progress and do better in the end of the year tournaments:
Paws needs to fix those fundamentals problems
We gotta learn how to protect the plate and earn hits off of good pitchers instead of waiting to hit mistake pitches or racking up stats against bad pitchers.
Pitching success requires recruiting success. Tournament success requires pitching depth. Good pitching is hard to find/recruit in College ball.
How is it that some teams manage to recruit pitching? Pitching coaches? Reputation?
Improved fundamentals...smart hitting ...pitching depth are the items that immediately come to mind in order to get us to the next level.
We are losing a lot of good players off this team. Freshmen can make a much greater impact in baseball than football. We will need a strong recruiting class.
Hoopie, I concur.
FYI ... no player from the state of Alabama was taken in the first and compensation rounds of the MLB draft. UAT did have a baseball signee drafted. LSU had a football signee drafted.
Pitching in college is more about development than about recruiting...
Recruiting helps, but is difficult to get the top talent into college.
They have talented pitchers, but they have to work on their mental approach while on the mound. Pitching is as much mental as it is talent.
AU must improve on defense, specifically on the left side of the IF. They have to learn some baserunning fundamentals...
Ms. Hoopie wants an I-phone and the 16g would be enough memory for her.
Except for the likelihood of Bammer encounters, this may be worth a trip to Walmart.
Mountain West opts not to expand
whew, that's a relief.
THT...
Who were they gonna add? Jax State?
Miller, that makes sense regarding college pitching. Personally, I'd have to watch college baseball more often to notice physical vs. mental deficiencies.
FSJ - Boise State.. and they still may offer BSU, but they first want to see what happens with the PAC/12/10 conferences
need to learn "some baserunning fundamentals"
didn't you mean "all baserunning fundamentals"?
Question from an earlier discussion aboute the #1 draft pick:
Is it really fair to call him a HS dropout? He got his GED immediately and spent 2 years in college. His goal was professional baseball, and he felt he'd help his career by not wasting time on gym and home economics. Even if it hadn't worked out this way, he'd be a college junior at 17. I personally wouldn't have given up my last two years of HS (and it was offered to me) because they were a ton of fun, but I have absolutely zero problem with this path.
THT,
Some fundamentals is better than no fundamentals... Right now, I'll take 'some'.
Hoopie,
I focus on the mental aspect of baseball, specifically pitching, because I used to pitch. Baseball is a chess match, it's a mental game... Pitching requires someone to be mentally sharp. Talent doesn't do you a bit of good if you don't know how to use it.
latest gossip on expansion...
it all depends on ND. If they join big 10+1, no other teams will be invited to that conference. That would leave Missouri and Nebraska in the Big 12. If ND declines invitation, Big 10+1 will shoot for Big 10+6 (missouri, nebraska, Pitt? 2 others??).
Pac-10 is about to invite 6 Big12 schools, TT, TAMU, TX, OK, OSU and either Baylor or Colorado. Will those schools stick with Big 12 if Nebraska and Missouri stay?
2.0 has checked in safely at Disney World. I can go to bed now.
Reinventing the wheel, or in this case, the PAC-8
the following from orangebloods.com
Scott's plan is to invite six Big 12 schools and have them play in a division with Arizona and Arizona State, as Orangebloods.com was first to report on Thursday.
The other division of the country's first super conference would be USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.
Would that be a Coastal and Inland division?
I think they should be PAC-8 and SWC divisions, though the latter is a bit of a stretch.
Sweet dreams, Hotties.
There are BEASLEY!!! days til kickofff!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
WARRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
Now go back to bed. There's nothing else to see here.
THT,
What are you doing up in the middle of the night?
I'm going walking. You need to sleep more.
Morning Hotties.
So with baseball done, I guess it's time to fully shift the Auburn sporting focus to football.
We gonna be any good this year?
So Van der Sloot confesses to murder for a lighter sentence. No life or death penalty in Peru. Hmmmmmmm.
War Eagle Hotties! Appreciate the baseball season going into June. Won't be much longer until the football team reports for duty!
Good morning all.
PF, I agree with you on the kid that skipped HS to go straight to JUCO. Everyone has (or should) have a career plan. Most of us choose to go to college to further our career. We do this in order to make more money to provide for ourselves and our future family. In this case his career goal was to play in the MLB. As of yesterday his plan seems to be working very well.
Is it time for some football????
Be here before you know it.
past time, Cincy
Cincy - to answer your question.. MrsTHT was up studying Statistics. She has a test today.
Tough loss last night. Great season and excited about the future.
Statistics was my least favorite class in grad school. Good luck to her.
Spicy Chicken Deluxe is waiting on me in about 3 hours at the local Chick Fil A.
Goodnight? Or good morning sleep?
Spicey Chicken sandwhich will be tried sometime soon by me. Sounds good Seanzie.
2.0 had her spicy chicken deluxe last week. She said it would be too spicy for me. I trust her.
I can't find any new football news this morning :-(
Eddie, I've had both the regular and the Deluxe. Both are incredibly good, however, I'm a big fan of the deluxe as they add lettuce and tomato and nice slice of melted pepper jack.
It's all good, THT. The original is still there and it's still the standard bearer.
happy TERRY BEASLEY day THT.
oh what a day!
It seems like all I ever do is wait for football season to get here. The season flashes by then I'm waiting again.
THT,
wtc or miller can probably give you some new football news - if you can get them out of the bathroom
those silly boys & their secrets.
Seanzie- Considering I'm one of the most picky eaters in the world, I'll be steering away from the Deluxe, but really looking forward to the regular!
Eddie abhors lettuce.
Abhors it!
If it's green, I let it be.
From the game last night:
AU left too manyon base. I think 12 or 13. Morris probably left 6 on himself. He was swinging for the fence each at bat. They pitched him away, he had the entire left field open. He will not go far in MLB if he can't go with the pitch.
The ump was not great behind the plat but be was consistant on som ecalls. AU took too many 3rd called strikes. Good teams do not do that. With bases loaded last night AU had 4 K's and two of them were looking.
All the AU hotshots were out last night. Chizik, Trooper, Dye, about 20 players or so. Great crowd. Had to be 400-500 out nin right center field and another 800 or so in the parking deck.
Hated it for AU but the better team won last night. They delivered in the clutch. Mediocre pitching (I am being generous) and average (again generous) defense will not win championships. AU had 18 hits and still lost. I can count 3 base running errors that killed 3 scoring opportunities. Big offensive numbers are great to watch, but the less glamorous things wim baseball games.
Lettuce? It doesn't even have a taste. It's crunchy water.
agreed wtc.
And one other thing. You guys wer egoing so fast n the blog last nght I could not keep up, but I did see THT and ScoCHoc on their computer screens waving at me. I looked for PF but could not see you. (Those were geat seats)
One guy sittin gnext to me played at AU in 1963. He pitched. He said they played Miss St. in the SEC championship series and intentionally hit hte guy in the on deck circle in the gut. Ump ALMOST threw him out. He said the ball slipped. It was Miss St's best hitter. When he came to bat, he could barely swing, bunted a pop up, the pitcher caught it an dthrew the runner leaving 1st for a double play. He got a kick out of telling that story.
CIncy-I am not sure you have the right names headed to the restroom.
wtc, do you remember that player's name? great story.
The pitcher was Marlon Sharpe.
THT-I saw you rcomment about my legs stiking out in the aisle. It was too cramped in those seats. When I can take advantage of the aisle, I usually do. It was too bad they wouldn't let my wife sit with me. I only had the one ticket and they checked to make sure you wer ein the right section until the 5th inning, however, I told her they quit checking after the 7th. She had to sit way up high in section 102.
Eddie - shame on you. Don't ever say that again. You are a selective eater.
wtc - section 102 "way up high".... at Plainsman Park? That's funny.
the year we lived in B'ham, I had a friend who did not eat any food with color except, strangely enough, spinach casserole. MrsTHT and I were at a chinese restaurant and MrsTHT scolded me for not eating egg rolls. Even friend eats egg rolls, she pointed out. I looked over and sure enough, he was going to town on an egg roll. Eating it like corn on the cob, i.e. the fried dough was the corn and the stuff inside was the cob.
You need to put onions on every thing even your icecream. It taste good and is good for you.
So there THT
Good season but disappointing post season.
Things are looking up and I hope Paw will devote more time teaching defense and base running. You can't win without them.
I am seeking motivation to get out and weed flowerbeds. Anyone have any to offer?
yes, Cincy, we have a few flower beds you can weed.
I'm afraid I can't offer any motivation for that task.
Cincy it is a good time to weed flower bed while the ground is still soft. Wait and it will be so hard you will work twice as hard.
Sure digger, you can offer Cincy motivation, but offer me only vile suggestion.
ice cream is a good idea. Breakfast was too long ago and lunch is still an hour away. I think I'll have some ice cream now sans nastiness.
Not vile but healthy. An onion a day will keep the bugs away.
I'd rather have head lice.
I worked for Chick fil a for 5 years, and I always told them to make a spicy chicken sandwich. They better be paying me, since it was my idea.
Michael - chic a fil is run by honest folks. I'm sure the check is in the mail.
cincy.... we have 1 flower bed that needs weeding very badly...
the ground is soft, it should be a relatively easy task (compared to hard/dry ground).... I'll give you directions to the house if you wish to weed ours...
Weeding our flower bed might give you the 'want to' to weed your own
weeding anyone's flower bed would give me the "want to" to pour concrete.
EDSBS is ripping up the conference expansion scenarios. Funniest stuff they've done in a while.
http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/
digger - you had a halfway brilliant idea. I rarely have ice cream in the morning, but it was just what I needed to get me going. Heading upstairs to my task of filing papers.
WARRRR EAGLE!!!
In reference to the topics I missed last night and this morning...
iphone: I have a cell phone, it sends and receives calls. I'm good with those functions.
The MLB # 1 pick: If he's a bust, at least he has his education to fall back on and he isn't putting all of his eggs in this baseball basket.
Now, that is some motivation. Mr. Cincy's idea of living at the condo fulltime is sounding better and better.
I decided to watch a little HGTV first. I will let it get good and hot so I will sweat more, thereby losing more weight as I weed.
When I'm counting blessings, I'm always sure to count the fact that Ms Hoopie has a landscape company. She keeps a list of honeydos for me, but the outside is handled by her crew.
Most college Baseball schollys are one year at a time.
Most pro contracts include (in addition to a bonus and salary) a full 4 year scholly if the player never makes it to the bigs.
John Longshore is at it again........"Auburn can't make it to the next level". GAAAAAAAA!!!!
Do the bamers ever enjoy their success without dragging Auburn into it?!!!
I think it is the Finescum syndrome.
thx wtc.
Interesting Hoopie, I never knew that.
WTC,
Did you ever answer my RB and Joe Morrow question from yesterday. There were so many post yesterday and I never went back to check.
I know of this island called Alcatraz that we can send all of the walmartians to. Give them one pack of cigs, a sixer of bud and watch them go at it.
OK, I guess I am sufficiently motivated. Off to the salt mine - er, flowerbeds. Hoping to read some exciting football news when I return.
Chb- I like Coe ad the other RB.
Jury still out ok Morrow. He is a top target. I like our chances as of today.
So do you think we end up with Coe or Blakely? Have we even offered Morrow?
So seriously, who is our best cover guy in the secondary ?
Demond Washington.
The safety who's being moved to Linebacker? Or do I have him confused with someone else?
That's Darren Bates you're thinking of.
Q+A With Gus Malzahn
Ah, thank you for the correction.
I may be going to CFA for lunch today. Is the spicy chicken sandwich better than the regular with hot sauce? I have my doubts.
Scott, I'm a huge fan of the spicy chicken. It offers a completely different experience. Try it out. I prefer the deluxe myself.
I tell you what (CGM quote), I may try that spicy chicken sandwich.
Scottchoc- it's pretty good I had one last week. Will never get the regular one again
did you go to brewfest??
Harrison, no didn't make it. I got caught up in doing house/yard stuff Saturday afternoon. How was it?
Btw, I did try Sam Adams new IPA over the weekend - not bad.
it was hot..i was a little disappointed. It was so hard to find new stuff. to try the limited release stuff you had to be at certain tents at certain times, of which I made zero.
I still had fun overall
IPAs are good drinkin'.
The only time I've ever been to an event at Sloss it was brutally hot. That played a part in my decision to not go.
Hey Seanzie, would you mind posting your WC fantasy league info again?
Sure, let me go get it.
FIFA Fantasy World Cup
League Code:245272-98228
Hoopie,
I'm aware of the one year scholarship and other info, but I'm just not a fan of the system that allows that to happen. I hope the kid is successful and if I had that kind of talent when I was his age I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing, but it's a huge gamble for his future if he doesn't have the right mindset.
Auburn had a great season. I tend to measure how good a season is by how much improvement we see, rather than if they win such and such title. We are headed in the right direction.
RK ...I feel that if the NCAA were truly interested in academics, they would require a 4 year commitment from the school to the student. I realize that some kids might dog-it and not care to produce, but at the same time teams are kicking players off teams that are legitimately doing as well as they can.
If there is a way to be fair to all ..I'm all for it.
David Perno is notorious for kicking kids off the UGA squad. Although it worked great for him for a while, his rep is out and kids are starting to shy away from UGA. For years there was a direct baseball pipeline from Cartersville to UGA. Now we got D1 quality kids playing at UF and Ole Miss also.
Because it's because.
I hope you don't mind that I joined your league Sean.
I'm an outstanding fantasy football player. Football, futbol, it can't be too different, right?
Strawberry Letter 23 playing. That's from back in the day.
The more the merrier, eh you. Did you find it difficult to join?
Werk-I also think the baseball kid is taking a huge chance by the way he did what he did. But college is not for everyone, nor does everyone need a college degree. To quote Judge Smells from Caddy shack.'The world needs ditch diggers too.(
Well, he got his GED. And went to JUCO and will have a contract guaranteed with a college scholarship. He'll be alright.
And Cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
Nah, joining was a snap.
The player selection process was pretty easy too due to my encyclopedic knowledge of international soccer players....or maybe I just hit 'autoselect'. I can't remember.
Seanzie,
It all depends on how strong he is mentally to handle the pressure and how good he is with money if his ability doesn't pan out.
Word. We've got about 6 or 7 people in the world cup game as of right now. We have space for more, e-mail me through my profile or click on the link I posted earlier!
Any first round pro pick will get $1-2 mil guaranteed bonus. The 17 year old kid that did the GED-JUCO route will also get a 2 year scholly if he never makes it to the bigs.
Most top college coaches "encourage" players to leave after their Jr. year(21 years old),unless they have a high GPA that'll help the APR. Those Jrs that leave school will also get a one year scholly as a part of their pro contract.
The conventional wisdom for the college coaches has been that if the Jr isn't good enough to get drafted after 3 years, he is taking up space on the roster that should be filled by an incoming hotshot freshman.
This scenerio soured me towards college baseball for the last 7 years. I got hooked during LSU's CWS run last year and decided to quit punishing myself and just watch the sport.
Well, when will we have a decision on USC? What is the current thinking? Will they receive a noogie or a wedgie?
What is the latest on conference realignment? I predict that some members of the SEC, Pac10, Big12, ACC, and Big10 will form a super conference to be called the Huge48.
My daughter's, friend's older brother was drafted 5th round, but chose to go to UGA. He hit 20 hrs as a frosh and played on some very good UGA teams. He also majored in accounting, took summer classes and kept a 2.9 gpa. He started all 3 years while at UGA. At the end of his Jr year, he got drafted 5th round again. He found out about the draft while practicing for the super-regional and Perno told him to go pro because UGA needed the scholly room the next year.
He tried the pros for 2 years, got married and quit baseball. The kid now loads rocks onto trucks and handles bookkeeping at his parents landscape rock bidness. We see him regularly and he is very happy.
You have a better chance to get struck by lightning than to make it in the pros.
Steve, go listen to F-bomb to get the latest speculation on realignment.
Go to EDSBS for plenty of realignment satire.
