Getting to know your Auburn regional opponents

All-in-one response post

You've had questions and comments. I'll take a minute to respond to most of them.

Hoopie: You can't rank all 12 coaches in the top five. And yes, I put a good deal of emphasis on won-loss record. I also tend to judge my financial adviser on a money made-money lost basis. Silly me.

War Eagle Girl: Don't know what to tell you. You want to read it, read it. You don't, don't. But the whining is silly.

Jet: I don't think of Chizik as a 5-19 coach. I think of Chizik the way Auburn has asked me to think of Chizik -- as a middle-of-the-pack coach in charge of a great staff. That's the perception they've created. Until the team does something great a couple of times under his leadership, he'll remain there. Remember, Dubose won an SEC title and seemed poised to make a good run after a great recruiting class. And then it all fell apart. Holding it together for several seasons is what makes a top-level coach. Chizik will have his opportunity to do that. If he can maintain a staff anywhere close to this one over the next few years -- and the on-the-field results are there -- there won't be any choice but to rank him high.

Michael: You should post more.

SFC: You're very wise, in my opinion.

"I think of Chizik the way Auburn has asked me to think of Chizik -- as a middle-of-the-pack coach"

Was that request made via email, certified mail, or by some undocumented method?
Did it come from Jay Jacobs? The faculty senate?

6:55 PM
Blogger Jet said...

My issue is not where Chizik was ranked, but with the DuBose comparison. I don't think Auburn has asked anyone to think of Chizik as a middle-of-the-pack coach with a great staff. I think Auburn is asking you to view Chizik as secure enough in what he's doing to allow his assistants to get some of the spotlight, too.

Mike DuBose. Somewhere a joke is missing this punchline.

7:30 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Chizik is just what Bag says he is. We think of him based on perceived potential, Bag is looking at results. Nothing wrong with either approach, it's just a matter of perspective.

7:36 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Comparing coaches is a tough task. Win/Loss record obviously comes into play, but the number of wins that mean success is different for every school. If you could always win half your games at Vandy, you would likely keep you job for a long time. Do that at Auburn, Alabama, .... and a resume update is called for.

Also, people skills and management skills are much more important than coaching ability. Chizik should get credit for the staff he puts together and how he is able to manage them.

An example of a bad manager? Well, a prime example was when you would see Mike "F'n" Shula on the sideline with his eyes bulging out of his head looking like someone just kicked his dog. When the players look to the head coach and wonder if he has a load in his shorts, it's a bad thing.

While I thought Auburn was foolish to get rid of Tuberville, he had some obvious bad decisions and he answered for them. Getting rid of Borges was a bad idea. Not allowing CTF to do his own thing with the offense was another bad idea. Hiring and offensive coordinator that could not get along with the offensive staff was a big time bonehead move. Firing CTF in the middle of the season was another bonehead move. And above all, not developing a good relationship with the administration is simply idiotic. That is all managerial stuff, not X's and O's coaching.

7:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for Chizik, the jury is still out. He gets an A so far, but it is very likely Malzahn will be gone after this season, along with several other staff members. We kept the staff intact once, but I doubt it happens again.

Bags ..Try to keep up and quit deflecting away from my points. My comments stand. You ranked 'em based on W-L and didn't bother to do any research into how or why they should be doing. As usual, you spent more time preparing quips and attempting to make your points though spin rather than gather substance to back up your points.

Imma bettin' you don't treat your financial analyst to that type of comments. Not if you don't want him to spit in your money. Based on your statements and recent market performance, I'm guessing you've got to look pretty far away to find an analyst you haven't fired already. Maybe doing your own financial analysis would be better ..oh wait ..that would require something other than spin.

Is the PAC 10 really gonna swipe 6 teams from the Big 12 and form the PAC 16? This could get dicey for the teams/conferences that are left out.

This will blow up traditional (unofficial)bowl alignments and the BCS formulas.

8:12 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

PAC16? No way.

8:19 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't think it is likely the PAC-10 could get all of those teams, but it is possible. I am sure the SEC has already had some preliminary discussions with some of those schools. All of this talk could end up meaning the end of the Big12. It could happen. I do find it hard seeing Nebraska in a different conference than Oklahoma, but we shall see. If this re-alignment happens, it will happen suddenly when none of us expect it.

8:20 PM
Blogger Miller said...

THT, isn't the hockey off-season only like 3 weeks?

8:21 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

not knowing which teams you're talking about, I'll just offer hypothetical.

Washington State and Baylor go undefeated in regular season. Instead of BOTH having a great shot at playing in BCSNCG, only the one winning Big Pac championship game would go. That's what I call eliminating the competition. I'm all for it as long as SEC doesn't do something that stupid.

Final round

THT: Pony express -- they went old school.

Jet: You're reading way too much into the Dubose comparison. I meant it just like I said in the column: Great staff, good recruiting class, no results yet. That's it. I'm not predicting he'll be Dubose and fondle a secretary or comparing where they are in their careers. But when you look back at Dubose, you remember him coming off a good season, having a good staff and recruiting class and sitting on large expectations.

Seanzie: It's more opinion than perspective. I have one. Everyone else has one. It's cool that we disagree. I'm aight discussing those disagreements -- that's basically why I write the columns. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be an option for those who take this way too seriously.

SFC: I don't think I can blame Tubs for the turmoil. The strife was there before Jetgate and after. Some of those guys just didn't like him and no amount of hatchet burying was gonna change that.

Hoopie: None of your points make sense, that's why I'm deflecting them. Yes, my rankings placed a good deal of emphasis on wins and losses, which is life as a coach. But they weren't entirely based on W/L record, as you're now claiming, otherwise Petrino wouldn't be third and Johnson wouldn't be wherever I had him. And stop using words like "spin." It's stupid. We're talking about an opinion piece, and I have given you the reasons for which I hold the stated opinion. That's not spin, no matter what Fox tells you.

wtc and CH=B: Not everyone is a "Bammer" or a "Barner." Some people form opinions about AU athletics without a bias one way or the other. You might not agree with those opinions, and those opinions might sometimes reflect poorly upon your beloved Tigers. However, crafting rebuttals that are only relevant if I'm a "Bammer" is stupid and a waste of everyone's time.

Biff: Racist.

Should the Pac10 or Big10 create a Big16 conference, and the SEC follow suite, it would make sense to change the name to something that is not so regional. I nominate the name "Sweet16" for the SEC super conference.

Don't write stupid stuff and people won't call you stupid. Pretty simple, isn't it?

When you write, you expose yourself and are open to criticism. If you can't handle criticism, don't write. Get another job. Grow a skin and quit calling every critic a whiner. That's PATHETIC.

What the HELL kind of article was that 'A Southern Cal loss may not be Auburn's gain'. Were you drunk? puking when you wrote that? Were you completely moonbat that day? That was one of the worst piece of writing I've ever seen. (and I've read a page of twilight!)

I think it's a misconception among you guys to think that you are doing us a HUGE FAVOR by writing, or blogging. Instead of expecting readers to be thankful for your turdilicious opinion, YOU should be thankful to the readers, for giving you, and the BS you write / utter enough credence.

There are tons of free sources, and most of them are better than you. Quit thinking that you are doing any of us a huge favor by slinging whatever it is that you sling.

I'm guessing that a lot of the Hotties taking exception with what Moon wrote means that he did his job pretty well this week. He expressed an opinion, it was polarizing to some, and I guess it got its fair share of feedback.

Isn't that what his job as a columnist is all about, regardless of how uninformed or opinionated it is?

6:28 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Good morning All

I think his job is to cover Auburn, but it is obvious that he can't do it objectively. He is blinded by the poop colored glasses. Aero and WTC have said all that needs to be said.

A very simple way to put an end to this it to not read anything he writes. Maybe the MA will get someone who wants to cover Auburn and do it without bias. I'm sure there is plenty of space left under $aban's desk.

The fact is that if you want a good opinion piece on Auburn or Alabama, you are not going to get it from someone in this state. They have formed opinions, whether they admit it or not, and agendas to push. The only value that the opinion pieces have in this state is to serve as backup to toilet paper. If Moon expects anyone on this blog to believe his opinion is unbiased, then he obviously has been blinded by his bias. Bamer or not, Agendas are being pushed. Have been and always will be, and I don't need a Bill Clinton speech to try and convince me otherwise.

7:31 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

Is it Bags job to cover Auburn? I thought that was Tate's job.

If Moon is an opinion writer then he's doing exactly what he should. If he is an Auburn beat reporter then he is way out of line.

I can't find staffer job titles on the MA website so your guess is as good as mine.

My apoogies to Mr. Moon. He had the "Connie Frederick" post, which has not yet garnered any particular claim to fame. He did not misfire on the "BEASLEY!!!" post as I had mistakenly implied in a now deleted comment. ...And simple math is supposed to be one of my strong suits. Aarrgghhh!

Speaking of math...

Ron Stallworth says it's 92 days til kickoff!

When do two-a-days start?

THT - I used to live across the street from Ron Stallworth, they were excellent neighbors. My first spring in that house; I'm out in my yard and he's in his each of us doing some form of yardwork or another (as I recall, we were the only homeowners anywhere near who did our own yards), I hear this noise across the street and stop what I'm doing to see he's stopped what he's doing and is making silly baby noises to his daughter through the window. That just struck me as really funny/ironic at the time thinking here's this guy who used to flatten dudes and now look at him, he's just like I am.

That's one of the handful of things I miss about Montgomery, in my last two houses there I had some very good neighbors. Here, none.

You must move back to Alabama. We're good neighbors here!

cincy - that's absolutely, 100% Hot Wife's plan that we'll move back to AL. Troy in particular. This time I find myself actually considering it, I can keep the same job and live just about anywhere.

So if Stallworth is just like you, are you calling him a ninny?

Moon is a columnist. He was charged with covering AU baseball while Tate is in Destin. I would think the readers would be glad the baseball team was being covered in Tate's absence. Moon posted quotes on here, no opinions, just quotes. He was beat up because of a column he wrote the day before, then offered opinion to back his column. If you actually listen to/read Moon, you will see he does not seem to be bias towards any team. Heck, he had Saban ranked 5th in last years poll of SEC coaches. Like his columns or not, I don't see how that affects his ability to copy quotes on a blog.

Dothan = home of Gabe Gross.

Gabe had another top defensive play on the MLB Network last nite. that's 2 in one week. keep it up GG!

Blogger E-Bro said...

ehyou and Styles have covered this, but it is JayG's job to cover Auburn and Moon's to stir up opinion. Both get the job done. And Moon has done a fine job of covering baseball in JayG's absence.

I don't agree with much of anything he writes as a columnist, but that probably goes for a lot of columnist, and when in doubt, try the THT method and just do not read.

API - yes, it was. And I'm ready, too! Been ready for 40 years, actually.

ehyou - #1, shut up. #2, Troy is her hometown and where her aging parents (dad's in poor health) live. She has family throughout the area all the way down to Dothan so it wouldn't surprise me if in a few years I were living somewhere in the vicinity.

speaking of Moon, here is his AU baseball article for today.

Norm - if you find housing too costly or the population density too great in that metropolis known as Troy, you can always find a nice quiet place in the not-to-distant suburb of Glenwood. They have their very own artesian well.

I don't see Bags as much of a Bammer as I see him as someone that uses contrived, conjectured, sarcastic phrases(I tried to be tactful and use the word spin) to prop up his otherwise unfounded opinions.

Bags ...at least get on the internet and read info regarding all the other SEC coaches before trying to rank them. I understand that the MA can't pay you to travel and personally visit/investigate, but there is plenty of free info on the back stories and situations of each coach out there.

Try this:
Joker Phillips ...Has inherited a running, oiled machine that is producing well for Ky. So far he is continuing the momentum in place. Will he make it better, worse or continue status quo? Dunno ..so we'll withhold ranking for now.

Steve ...Bags has done a great job assembling stats and taking a few interviews in JG's absence. Bags needs to stay away from voicing opinions until he commits himself to truly gathering data/info to back his opinion.

At least he stays on topic when writing. Sometimes on the radio, he will twist the conversation towards some topic (I guess spin is too broad a term for Bags) just so he can start ranting on some social issue.

As for Moon's stuff, it really doesn't' matter. I read it sometimes just to get the other sides' point of view. You know the adage, keep your friends close but your enemies closer. It is just good to see what others write/say so you can be ready for it when the rabid fan brings it up.

I missed this yesterday, but former Tennessee SID Haywood Harris died on Tuesday. He was 80. He retired 10 years ago.

Still, he was a good dude and a staple at SEC events until a few years ago.

Chris Low wrote about Harris' passing and it's worth reading.

I will say that he did a poor job of backing up his comparison of CHizik with DuBose. Dubose didn't play a single season with less than 70 scholly players. Going 8-5 was a remarkable accomplishment with that few players. Sure they lost some they should have won, but being in the game with any of them with that much lack of depth deserves very high marks.

Can't argue with Goshen. But do they have an artesian well in the center of town?
I didn't think so.

Ring of Fire people like Hoopie pretty much have free rein here -- and I'm not rescinding that -- but I'd strongly encourage everyone to ease up on tagging Bag for a bit.

He doesn't mind. I'm not doing this for his sake.

I'm doing it for the blog's sake. You all didn't like the Dubose-Chizik comparison. OK. I get that. You've voiced your disdain, he responded, you had a chance to say stuff about his response.

Can we let it go and move on?

I'll try that again without all the typos:

Norm-Goshen, AL also has a small town feel to it. Oh wait, it is a small town. Just sayin'.

Petrey, AL is in that same area too. However, the do have 1 fairly good size business there, so it might be too metropolis for you.

Wow... I guess I picked a bad night to go politicking instead of HABOTNing. Looks like I missed some excitement. Although the SC governor's race is becoming almost as sordid.

So... seeing as how I live down here in S.C., I'd prefer Clemson to just go 2 and out so I don't have to deal with them. Alternatively, any AU win would be fine.
