Southern Cal hammered by NCAA; Auburn playing revisionist history?

Hey everyone. Busy day in the world of sports, no?

News also broke this afternoon regarding rampant violations that occurred at Southern Cal from 2003-05. Part of the NCAA's penalty includes the stripping of the Trojans' football wins in 2004 and 2005, which irks Auburn fans to no end.

Southern Cal beat Oklahoma like a drum in the 2004 Bowl Championship Series title game. Auburn, despite being 12-0 heading into bowl season, wasn't allowed to play for the national championship. Many here believe the Tigers were improperly denied that opportunity ... and now comes news that opportunity was obfuscated because of cheating.

Does Auburn now have a true claim to the 2004 championship? No.

The BCS amended its bylaws a few years ago to permit the stripping of a title. There will be no retroactive changes; the 2004 season, officially, will have no BCS champion.

Still angry? Maybe you'll feel better vicariously reveling in Tennessee's enjoyment. Lane Kiffin left the Vols last winter for USC and now faces the loss of 10 football scholarships and bowl trips for two seasons. And he worked as an assistant at USC when these violations went down.

Karma, anyone?

Here's the full bill for USC (courtesy of the L.A. Times):

  • Public reprimand and censure.
  • Four years of probation: from June 10, 2010, through June 9, 2014.
  • Postseason ban for the 2009-10 men’s basketball season. (self-imposed)
  • Postseason ban for the 2010 and 2011 football seasons.
  • One-year show-cause penalty for assistant football coach Todd McNair (June 10, 2010, to June 9, 2011).
  • Vacation of all football wins, including football bowl games, from the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
  • Vacation of all basketball wins in the 2007-08 season, including the NCAA tournament. (self-imposed)
  • Vacation of all wins in women’s tennis between November 2006 and May 2009.(self-imposed)
  • Reduction of football scholarships by 10 for the next three academic years.
  • Reduction of men’s basketball scholarships from 13 to 12 for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years. (self-imposed)
  • Reduction of the total number of recruiting days in men’s basketball by 20 days (from 130 to 110) for the 2010-11 academic year. (self-imposed)
  • $5,000 fine. (self-imposed)
  • Remittance of the $206,200 the university received for its participation in the 2008 NCAA basketball tournament. (self-imposed).
  • Disassociation of football player Reggie Bush, basketball player O.J. Mayo and “booster” Rodney Guillory.
  • Release of three men’s basketball recruits from their letters of intent. (self-imposed).
  • Prohibition of all non-university personnel, including boosters, from traveling on football and men’s basketball charters; attending football and men’s basketball team practices; attending or participating in any way with university football and men’s basketball camps, including donation of funds; and having access to the sidelines and locker rooms for football and men’s basketball games.

SFC, from Wikipedia:

Davis was given his nickname when he was 9 years old by a youth league coach. At 5'6", 160 pounds, he was too large to play pee-wee and played as a senior. He used to cry when playing with his older team-mates, and his coach would tell him, "Stop crying, you big baby."[

I didn't really care for a re-vote either. Claiming a title 6 years afterwards is very Bamereque, although Bama did claim many decades later. It is just part of what makes Bama so funny and the people that say 13 seem so ridiculous.

For those interested in my continued Comcast saga:

I picked up a new HD DVR box today to replace the on fried by the idiot on the phone yesterday. The guy hands it to me and it looks as if the last owner dropped it off the back of his truck; all banged up with numerous scuffs and scars. I looked at it, raised my eyebrow, and commented to the guy that there was probably a reason why this box had been returned, and could he plug it in to assure me that it worked. He was completely unresponsive, so I repeated myself. He said, they're all refurbished, not new, but they work.

Well, you can guess what happened. It didn't work. I called customer support, the tech guy couldn't get it to respond, and I'm now on my way back to Comcast. Another credit on my account means I'm nearly paid up through August now.

Vanderbilt is 11th in the SEC in total wins (ahead of only MSU) with 556 official (actually 555, but one of Bama's forfeits in 1993 was to the 'Dores).

Steve,

Yes.

More important games will have PKs to decide the winner. Group play isn't in that category.

Holy Crap!!! If Texas A&M and Oklahoma come to the SEC, that would be a major coupe. They are Texas' big rivals. I have a hard time believing it, but you never know.

Would the SEC also add two teams to the East, or would Auburn move to the East?

4:10 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

i'd say we get bumped to the East. that's what i would do, but i'm no Slive.

If Oklahoma & Texas A&M head to the SEC, it would seem that Texas might follow.

On Friday, Texas said it planned an unscheduled meeting with the university's board of regents.

How does one do that?

4:16 PM

If Slive pulls it off, I'll tip my hat to him. Well, first, I'll put on a hat. Then I'll tip it. Because I reckon I can't be tippin' my hat to him, iffen I'm not wearin' a hat.

4:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Slive could end up looking like a genius. The SEC seems to have done a much better job of keeping their discussions out of the media.

4:17 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Texas won't come to the SEC... they will run scared to a weaker PACxx

4:19 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Cause iffen it's planned, it can't rightly be unscheduled. And iffen it's unscheduled, it rightly can't be planned. So, what will it be, sonny? Do you want that we would plan it or leave it unscheduled?

i just want the SEC to take over the world. how great would it be if Slive screwed it up for everyone else. AUsome.

Ironically, ESPN probably has a big influence here. I am sure Slive has talked to them about the possibility of renegotiating the TV contract to include those Big12 schools. You have to imagine that ESPN would love for some of those schools to join the party.

Does SEC bylaw 14.1.15 mean that Mitch Mustain cannot transfer to an SEC school?

4:22 PM

Think about it. If Texas A&M and Oklahoma come to the SEC, who would follow Texas to the PacX? TCU, OK State, Baylor, the Kansas schools?

It would seem that Texas would look like the biggest loser in that scenario.

4:23 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think it would be waaaayyyy cool if Slive's dream of grabbing UNC & Duke would be a reality. AU making the 500 mile trip instead of me would be fantastic.

Ain't gonna happen.

PAC 11 needs one or 3 - they could just take TX, or they could take TX, TT, and either Utah or OkieState

i.e. my guess is they wouldn't go to 16 if they didn't get OU and TAMU. But that's just me guessing.

Blogger Miller said...

Texas is doing the talking for most of those schools... mindless followers...

4:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That link Miller posted seems pretty credible. I can't imagine the Oklahoma runningbacks coach texting they that are headed to the SEC if it weren't true.

4:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

If they don't go to 16, and stick with 14, it would make the divisional alignment a bit less attractive. Previously it was going to be the former Pac8 in one division. If there are only 14, that would mean one Pac8 member would be in the newbie division.

4:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It isn't exactly mindless, Miller. It is where the bucks are. The other schools are just following the money.

4:34 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The thing that makes me skeptical about the link..... is that it doesn't show Huepel saying it, no video... and I haven't seen or heard any other media outlet confirming this guys account of what was said....
He could have made it up...

4:35 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

good point, SteveFC.

and OU and TAMU in SEC??? AU moving to the East div would put more of their away games within driving distance. But I don't go to them now, so I guess I'd rather AU stay in the west.

"There are reports the SEC has been in contact with Texas A&M and Virginia Tech about possibly joining the conference. There has also been speculation about Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State."

well, Miller, if that's your basis, I'm going to have to call a big bluff on MJT's report.

A Houston radio station is reporting this.

Houston radio announcer says that SEC gave unconditional invitations to Virginia Tech and Texas A&M.

Miller's Oklahoma news seems like the most credible to me so far in terms of the SEC.

ESPN is about to talk about whether Kiffikin now regrets taking the USC job. Duh!!! It has to be one of the top bonehead moves in coaching.

4:49 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

so, where will OU go?

from Bevo Beat -
A highly-placed official from a Big 12 school confirmed Friday that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will join the Pac-10 Conference once formal offers are made to them, but said that Texas A&M officials remain on the fence between joining the Pac-10 or the SEC.

“The decision has been made,” the official told the American-Statesman. “We’re bringing everybody to the Pac-10 but A&M.”

who's right? Heupel or "the official"?

4:59 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Sounds like Texas is speaking for the group....
If Texas running scared from the SEC isn't bad enough... If OU is letting TX speak for them, then how gutless and spineless are they?

5:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I keep seeing conflicting information, but still think the OU to the SEC stuff seems like the most credible. There just isn't a lot of consistency in what I am reading, other than the original stuff about the Big8 South headed to the PacX.

5:04 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'd love for OU to come to the SEC just to spite TX.

ESPN is also saying OU, OSU, TT, and TX all going to Pac

5:05 PM

Dan Beebe is attempting to keep the remaining 10 schools in the Big12 together. Good luck.

5:12 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

University of Oklahoma sources confirmed Friday that the school is headed to the Pac-10 but will wait for Texas to make its intentions known.

5:12 PM

SteveFC - That's a joke, right?

5:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks THT. That seems more definitive than the Hoople thing. I guess it will be Texas Tuesday until we know for sure.

5:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

ESPN said it, but I can't believe Beebe sees any hope remaining here. I can believe the Big12 would stay together if just Colorado left, but Nebraska leaving pretty much seals the deal in my mind.

5:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Can you imagine Auburn waiting to see what Alabama would do before deciding which conference to go to? Me neither. This does make Oklahoma look pretty pathetic.

5:19 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

you're right, SFC. I couldn't possibly care less what ua-t does... other than I hope they lose.

5:21 PM

There is another Texas A&M/SEC connection I hadn't considered. I just heard Jackie Sherrill would like to see A&M in the SEC.

5:44 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Let's make a dangerous assumption that Big10+2 stops at 12. If the divisions are based on proximity, Michigan PSU and OSU will be killing each other in the east while Nebraska will have an easier road to the championship game each year. Of course, that also assumes that Michigan returns to gridiron relevance, and Penn State remains relevant post Joe Pa. I think I've earned at least an assumption misdemeanor with all those assumptions.

East
PSU
OSU
Mich
Mich St
Indiana
Purdue

West
Illinois
NW
Wisc
Minn
Iowa
Neb

5:46 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I was thinking along those lines, THT. Nebraska would be sitting in another weak division similar to the Big12 North. I am assuming they divide it up differently. Maybe Michigan ends up in the same division as Nebraska.

5:51 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

right now, that would make it even weaker!

I just read something that tickles me.

Broyles also had something interesting to say about Arkansas after 18 years of SEC play: “We don’t have a rivalry.”

Indeed, Arkansas doesn't really have a rival in the SEC. Auburn or Ole Miss are probably as close to rivalries as they have.

6:03 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Arkansas and LSU do play for a golden boot...

6:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, and Arkansas upset LSU not too long ago, but they aren't exactly big time rivals. Texas A&M is much more of a traditional rival of LSU, than Arkansas.

6:07 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Arkansas and TX also had a longstanding rivalry... Arky was/is very much an old SWC team

6:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Arkansas has actually played LSU more times than Texas A&M has, but there was a very long break in the Arkansas/LSU series until Arkansas joined the SEC.

Arkansas and Texas were basically the class of the SWC.
