Southern Cal hammered by NCAA; Auburn playing revisionist history?
Hey everyone. Busy day in the world of sports, no?
News also broke this afternoon regarding rampant violations that occurred at Southern Cal from 2003-05. Part of the NCAA's penalty includes the stripping of the Trojans' football wins in 2004 and 2005, which irks Auburn fans to no end.
Southern Cal beat Oklahoma like a drum in the 2004 Bowl Championship Series title game. Auburn, despite being 12-0 heading into bowl season, wasn't allowed to play for the national championship. Many here believe the Tigers were improperly denied that opportunity ... and now comes news that opportunity was obfuscated because of cheating.
Does Auburn now have a true claim to the 2004 championship? No.
The BCS amended its bylaws a few years ago to permit the stripping of a title. There will be no retroactive changes; the 2004 season, officially, will have no BCS champion.
Still angry? Maybe you'll feel better vicariously reveling in Tennessee's enjoyment. Lane Kiffin left the Vols last winter for USC and now faces the loss of 10 football scholarships and bowl trips for two seasons. And he worked as an assistant at USC when these violations went down.
Karma, anyone?

Oh, dang. Today was the end of the Morning Vent. Fare thee well, Biff. Sorry I missed your last show.
Thank you THT for clearing up that annoying noise during the fuball game. I could only endure about 3 minutes of that.
In memory and thanksgiving to one former coach:
Build a huge Bar-B-Q Pit at the north end of the stadium and have cooks there during each home game making the souths greatest food and giving it to each fan that wishes to partake.
SFC, from Wikipedia:
Davis was given his nickname when he was 9 years old by a youth league coach. At 5'6", 160 pounds, he was too large to play pee-wee and played as a senior. He used to cry when playing with his older team-mates, and his coach would tell him, "Stop crying, you big baby."[
THT, I have been hoping to see the same thing. I wouldn't exactly tear up too much if a lot of their current recruits change their mind either.
Also, didn't he get called "Baby Shaq" at LSU?
Apparently no revote on 2004 AP title:
http://blog.al.com/kevin-scarbinsky/2010/06/ap_will_not_re-vote_on_2004_na.html
AU was the best team that year, no doubt in my mind. I don't need them to revote to tell me that.
we should hang a 'USC CHEATED' banner instead then.
New HD box just arrived to replace the one the tech agent fried yesterday. Hopefully, I can hook it up and watch these dudes flop all over the place to get a call.
USCw's juniors and seniors can transfer out without penalty ... and other schools now can initiate contact.
I wonder if Auburn is getting involved. My guess: Yes.
Do they have anyone decent?
I didn't really care for a re-vote either. Claiming a title 6 years afterwards is very Bamereque, although Bama did claim many decades later. It is just part of what makes Bama so funny and the people that say 13 seem so ridiculous.
Jay G, I saw someone on ESPN say that the USC players would have to be granted releases to play immediately. It could be wrong, but that is what I saw.
You know what's silly? Taking titles away 6 years after they're won. It doesn't matter one bit at this point.
PF - T.J. Bryant is a Jr CB from Lincoln HS in Tallahassee. But he's not listed as a starter.
There are a few other students on SC's roster with southeast origins, but they are sophs.
True, PF. And the people associated with USC got the bucks related to the title. It is just much to do about nothing.
yup, The Chiz should raid USC's team and steal all their stud defensive players. you can play NOW and win a NC! COME ON BOYS!
THT,
I was not being serious with that question. There are more than a few "decent" players on that team.
PF - I know, but you got me thinking if there were any who might be more inclined to transfer to AU/SEC.
do we have any Hotties in Lincoln, NE or Austin, TX today?
did you call 'em THT? i'll try:
HOTTIES HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Boise finally gets their MWC invite (ESPN)... just in time before Utah, BYU, TCU all bolt for greener pastures?
I hope they all stay. Was actually wanting Colorado to get an invite as well, so the MWC could gain some ground in passing the Big East. I like the football they play out there. Lots of heart and motor.
Anybody listen to F-Baum yesterday? [By the way, F-B admitted he is nicer now since his show has gone national. He is less annoying lately.]
Any way, some gleeful Tennessee fan called in and said that Mustain was going to transfer to UT. I think he was kidding.
What are the transfer rules as applied to the 25 man admission/year?
Mustain's done with eligibility, right?
If USC sees and Exodus among their Juniors and Seniors, they could be playing with 50-60 men by the end of their punishment. Geez.
i don't know, but i think anyone enrolling now would count on the 2010 quota, regardless of their year in school. We're maxed out. Anybody know fo sho?
don't get my hopes up PF.
Stop it, PF. You've got me grinning so much it hurts.
Hey, NFL teams play with like 45 players, so welcome to the NFL, USC.
This comment has been removed by the author.
regents meeting now underway in Lincoln.
from huskerextra.com:
We expect them to take up the Big Ten discussion at 1 p.m. ... but we expect them to handle some of it in executive (closed-door) session.
At this point I would be kind of shocked in Nebraska didn't head to the Big10. Being stuck in the Big12 North wasn't good for them. If I were a player, playing in the South would have been much more enticing.
Wow, Jay is correct. The USC players can leave. Mitch Mustain is one of them.
Mitch Mustain should transfer to USC. Spurrier would love to have him, I'm sure.
THT I can't imagine anyone being considered a bad person for wishing ill-will towards USuCk.
I'm sure it doesn't mean much, but I'm withya on it.
still, Hoopie... USC vs ND or USC vs UA-T - I'm a bigger fan than OJ.
Recent UGA alums can actually afford to buy season tickets again. Minimum lifetime donation down to $1,550 this year.
Welcome back to earth, Dawg fans...Bammers will be joining us shortly (3-5 years).
for those of you with no life...
Nebraska regents meeting on the web here, though I can't get it to load... too many big 12-1 fans, I suppose.
Mustain from USCw to USCe--that would be fun!
Looks like today's segment out of Jackson will be my last. The station let J.Kev go, which is disheartening and silly and counter-productive.
I hope he gets back on the air soon. I really enjoy his approach to sports talk radio.
or maybe because it's that stupid Windows Media Player stuff that I can't get to work even with Flip4Mac
Nothing would be funnier than the Tennessee coaching staff showing up at USC to shop for players.
I forgot about Mustain!
Auburn is pretty set at QB right now, though.
I hate to hear that about JKev, hopefully he'll catch on somewhere.
As far as the USC scholarship stuff goes, I agree that we should be going in and pull who we can early.
We definitely don't need another QB showing up. I am satisfied to give Newton his shot. If there are problems, there are plenty of alternative already.
The French on ESPN!!! No, anything but the French!!! Maybe they will just surrender early.
bevo beat:
Texas regents are going to meet on Tuesday
What's up you bunch of losers?
who needs you? we've already flipped.
you shouldn't have been watching all that soccer stuff.
Texas Tuesday should be interesting. I had read that Texas would likely decide next week once Nebraska takes the blame for destroying the Big12.
Absolutely right THT. I shouldn't be and will not be watching it. Like the NBA Finals, the World Cup will get exactly 0% of my attention.
Actually, the NU regents meeting is live below the chat roll on this site.
Since they are currently in closed session, we get to see NU women's volleball highlights
The flash flood death count in Arkansas is up to 16. Incredible.
WHAT, J-KEV IS DONE?????!!!!!
BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!
crap, i forgot to HATE this morning. i'll have to check out the podcast then i'm done with that stupid Jackson station. gggrrr....
combined with some brown paper bags, the NU women volleyballers are pretty hot
For those interested in my continued Comcast saga:
I picked up a new HD DVR box today to replace the on fried by the idiot on the phone yesterday. The guy hands it to me and it looks as if the last owner dropped it off the back of his truck; all banged up with numerous scuffs and scars. I looked at it, raised my eyebrow, and commented to the guy that there was probably a reason why this box had been returned, and could he plug it in to assure me that it worked. He was completely unresponsive, so I repeated myself. He said, they're all refurbished, not new, but they work.
Well, you can guess what happened. It didn't work. I called customer support, the tech guy couldn't get it to respond, and I'm now on my way back to Comcast. Another credit on my account means I'm nearly paid up through August now.
PF - if you'd stop the SFC-length posts, I might read ;-)
hope you get functioning AND free tv soon.
go get 'em PF. i love Comcast when it works but hate dealing with the problems. no one seems to understand plain english.
it's official
NU presser at 4:45 CDT
So Nebraska is going to the Big 10, which will now have 12 teams. They're leaving the Big 12, which means it has only 10 teams left.
My brain hurts.
Boise State's move could cover the departure of Utah to the Pac-10.
My sense is if it thought the rest of the league's big dogs were going to leave, then Boise State wouldn't have left its league.
This may mean the Texas/Oklahoma abandonment of the Pac-10 is off the rails for now.
C'mon Slive, reel 'em in.
can you say domino?
I see where Kansas State is talking with the SEC. Please, no Kansas State. I know they won the Big12 many years ago, but lightning isn't likely to strike for them again.
Wow, so it's actually happening.
The MWC only had 9 teams prior to getting Boise State. I don't think it means anything with regard to the PacX.
KSU? really? and they add....????
Big question now is...MWC a BCS caliber conference w/ the addition of Boise?
Mizzou President is in a closed door meeting right now...
Kansas and K-St are thinking of joining the MWC....
Thanks Miller. I was just wondering about Missouri. At one point, it seemed they would be the first to jump to the Big10, but I think I heard they hadn't been offered yet, probably awaiting a ND decision.
Missouri is currently one school I can see heading to the SEC, should ND decide to remain independent.
NU asking their regents to approve the Big Ten move and blaming Mizzou for the Big12 breakup.
pot/kettle?
Nebraska is officially a Big10+2 team.
I am also thinking the Big10 is waiting to see what happens in the Big12 before possibly raiding the Big East or ACC. If the Big10 adds one more team and gets to 13, things will quickly get very interesting.
What would Mizzou bring to the table for the SEC? That would be a stupid move by the SEC
Mizzou will either go to the Big10 or get left behind in the soon to be defunct Big12....
Missouri has a good football program, but I don't believe they have any traditional rival in the SEC, not even Arkansas.
on espn.com:
michael (aka mjt, michaeljanterri, King of Eurasia, blah blah) in talks with al.com about moving his allegiances to the Gold Mine. This potential move comes as a response to the departure of monica, aeronaut, and the majority of the original Ring of Fire.
You don't want to be the last one stuck on that HABOTN boat," michael said in a recent interview. "My time was great there, but the Gold Mine will give me an entirely new viewing area. That sort of thing is important, you know?"
When asked about the idiots who post at al.com, MJT was optimistic. "Well, I love saying 'You guys are a bunch of idiots.' It will be even more fun when the people actually are idiots."
say it isn't so!
Nebraska to compete in Big10 as early as the 2011 season! accelerated timetable!
Texas to announce it is joining the Pac10 after board of regents meeting on Tuesday...
If Texas heads to the PacX, then the conference wars will heat up. Texas wouldn't go alone and the PacX is already at 11 teams.
TX taking OU, OSU, and TX Tech with them....
A&M still in discussions with SEC...
I've secretly attached myself as a rider to Michael's deal. For the Gold Mine to accept him, they have to accept me, too. I'm like Baylor.
A&M makes a lot of sense in the SEC with their rivalries with LSU and Arkansas. There are also historical links between A&M and Bama, although they rarely have met on the field.
The only time I can remember us playing Texas A&M was back in the mid 80s when they kicked the crap out of us in the Cotton Bowl and signaled the end of the wishbone at Auburn.
Miller, where do you get that?
My secret sources...
Orangebloods writer and several national writeres...
twitter is a wealth of information...
Ahh the man has it blocked up here. I'll have to catch up later.
Pretty sure the wishbone was already gone by then, SFC. The Cotton Bowl against A&M was Bo's Heisman year.
What's up you bunch of losers?
I think it was Bo's last season at Auburn and we were still in the wishbone.
ScottC, it looks like you are right. I just looked at some clips from that Cotton Bowl. My memory and reality aren't always the same.
You can say that again.
My memory and reality are always at odds.
just returned from grocery store to find NU presser moved to 5 CDT
My memory and reality aren't always the same.
It's true. The Gold Mind gets me, Harrison, and PF. The governor is forcing us to take PF with us.
They will probably fill in the extra spots with commentors from ITAT or something.
I'm starting to feel like Turner Gill on here.
Here is the article on where Kansas State's hope lies. It mentions the PacX and SEC, but it reads more like desperation than anything else.
Michael, PMarsh has got to be devastated. I got several tweets about him going after you guys heavy.
THT,
That may be the best random Turner Gill reference ever used. Bravo.
I hear Tx is only willing to consider SEC if Vandy leaves for Big Ten++. Vandy owns them on the gridiron and the Horns want no more beatdowns from the 'Dores.
all-time series
Vandy 8-3-1 vs Tx
At one point Vandy was a very good football school, but that was before my time.
Texas is using the excuse that their academic standards are too high for the SEC....
I think they are just running away from competition.
Is Texas really any much better in Academics than Vandy, UF, and UGA? I say no. Maybe marginally better than AU and UA (though not in all areas), and a little better than some of the bottom guys, but that's still a crap excuse. They're now just another school for Stanford and Cal to look down upon.
Time Out For Trivia:
The winningest team in the SEC, in terms of overall victories, is of course Alabama, with 792 official wins (they actually won another 29 games on the field that they have since forfeited/vacated due to NCAA rules violations).
Vanderbilt is 11th in the SEC in total wins (ahead of only MSU) with 556 official (actually 555, but one of Bama's forfeits in 1993 was to the 'Dores).
Here's your question: during what season did the Tide surpass VU in total wins?
no bigger disparity in academics than currently exists in the imploding Big12
PF - 2.0 is 10 miles south of 295. She wants the loop to the east, correct?
They are now officially pansies... they want to be labeled as tough guys, but when presented with an opportunity to play the SEC all year, they tuck tail and run to the nearest weak conference that will have them....
No. 295 only loops to the west.
stab in the dark...
what is 1966, Alex?
what's that 295 to the east on google maps?
She is going to encounter traffic no matter what, so she might as well stay on 95N.
9A goes East. It's not called 295 on the east loop.
...and she certainly doesn't want to get on that this time of day.
ah, 9-A
is their Nbound construction on 95 now?
She's seriously hitting Jax and S.Ga at the wrong time. 95 is going to be a nightmare in Camden and Glynn counties in Ga.
There is still some construction just north of downtown jax, but it's usually not major. I'd turn on the news and see what traffic advisories are out if my cable is working.
The Arkansas death toll due to the flash flood is up to 20 and could still possibly rise. The river level there apparently went from 3 foot to 20 foot in about 12 hours.
And there is an oil spill in the gulf.
And certain aerospace agencies are starting to lay people off.
Good times for all!
thanks, PF. I found the Jax traffic map/cam and it doesn't look too bad through town.
Yes, GA could be a whole different story.
Yeah, just stay on 95...NAS Jax is about to make 295 back up, and 9-A is never a good idea in the afternoon. Traffic looks good except for a slowdown at the downtown merge, but it's not bad.
Clay Travis is having a lot of fun at the expense of the Texas pansihorns
Tell her to go eat dinner at one of the following places in Brunswick:
1.Willie's Weenie Wagon (pure awesomeness)
2.Georgia Pig (good bbq)
3.Spanky's (but call ahead with the order)
It'll be dinner time when she's passing through there, and she'll be thankful for those suggestions.
Actually, that's Wilie's WEE-NEE Wagon.
Very eventful day here. Just returned from emergency visit to the eye doctor with a suspected retinal tear. Thankfully it is a vitreous detachment which should resolve itself over time. Supposed to be careful over next couple of days as it could lead to retinal tear. Very scary, but glad it wasn't more serious.
Now, if my eyes will get undilated and back to normal.
Well, two games in the WC, and no winner. 4 teams that consider themselves undefeated.
Cincy, be careful and get better.
Hang in there CincyT.
Michael is joking.
Cincy, Norm may have some eye patches laying around if you need them.
Seriously, take it easy and hope it all works itself out.
Cincy,
My eyes were dilated Wednesday afternoon, and I am still feeling some effects--not as bad as usual, however.
Hope you recover soon, and not just from the dilation!
Are ties common place in soccer? Why no OT?
Cincy - prayers for a rapid recovery. Don't strain your eyes reading HABOTN!
Good luck Cincy. I have had eye issues over the last 4 or 5 years and they aren't fun.

Maybe Oklahoma has a mind of its own afterall??
Knowing that it isn't anything serious makes it a lot better. Just feels like a windshield wiper going across my eye every little bit. Kinda weird but it will go away.
Steve,
Yes.
More important games will have PKs to decide the winner. Group play isn't in that category.
OU? suk it TX.
Wow, miller, very interesting.
hope you're all ok Cincy. i can handle contacts & glasses but i think a detached retina would weird me out.
Holy Crap!!! If Texas A&M and Oklahoma come to the SEC, that would be a major coupe. They are Texas' big rivals. I have a hard time believing it, but you never know.
Would the SEC also add two teams to the East, or would Auburn move to the East?
i'd say we get bumped to the East. that's what i would do, but i'm no Slive.
i've got some good friends who are huge OU fans. i would love that. we'd had a ball.
Slive has more education than most of us. That means he's smarter, and would do what's best....oh, wait.
If Oklahoma & Texas A&M head to the SEC, it would seem that Texas might follow.
i'm awfully educated too. don't mean a hill of beans partner. ha.
Nevermind, he's just got a JD and LLM. That's less than I thought he had. He's just another lawyer.
On Friday, Texas said it planned an unscheduled meeting with the university's board of regents.
How does one do that?
If Slive pulls it off, I'll tip my hat to him. Well, first, I'll put on a hat. Then I'll tip it. Because I reckon I can't be tippin' my hat to him, iffen I'm not wearin' a hat.
Slive could end up looking like a genius. The SEC seems to have done a much better job of keeping their discussions out of the media.
Texas won't come to the SEC... they will run scared to a weaker PACxx
Cause iffen it's planned, it can't rightly be unscheduled. And iffen it's unscheduled, it rightly can't be planned. So, what will it be, sonny? Do you want that we would plan it or leave it unscheduled?
i just want the SEC to take over the world. how great would it be if Slive screwed it up for everyone else. AUsome.
Ironically, ESPN probably has a big influence here. I am sure Slive has talked to them about the possibility of renegotiating the TV contract to include those Big12 schools. You have to imagine that ESPN would love for some of those schools to join the party.

Does SEC bylaw 14.1.15 mean that Mitch Mustain cannot transfer to an SEC school?
Think about it. If Texas A&M and Oklahoma come to the SEC, who would follow Texas to the PacX? TCU, OK State, Baylor, the Kansas schools?
It would seem that Texas would look like the biggest loser in that scenario.
I think it would be waaaayyyy cool if Slive's dream of grabbing UNC & Duke would be a reality. AU making the 500 mile trip instead of me would be fantastic.
Ain't gonna happen.
A student-athlete who, upon enrollment at the certifying institution, has less than two years of eligibility remaining, is not eligible for financial aid, practice or competition at the member institution.
PAC 11 needs one or 3 - they could just take TX, or they could take TX, TT, and either Utah or OkieState
i.e. my guess is they wouldn't go to 16 if they didn't get OU and TAMU. But that's just me guessing.
Texas is doing the talking for most of those schools... mindless followers...
That link Miller posted seems pretty credible. I can't imagine the Oklahoma runningbacks coach texting they that are headed to the SEC if it weren't true.
If they don't go to 16, and stick with 14, it would make the divisional alignment a bit less attractive. Previously it was going to be the former Pac8 in one division. If there are only 14, that would mean one Pac8 member would be in the newbie division.
It isn't exactly mindless, Miller. It is where the bucks are. The other schools are just following the money.
The thing that makes me skeptical about the link..... is that it doesn't show Huepel saying it, no video... and I haven't seen or heard any other media outlet confirming this guys account of what was said....
He could have made it up...
good point, SteveFC.
and OU and TAMU in SEC??? AU moving to the East div would put more of their away games within driving distance. But I don't go to them now, so I guess I'd rather AU stay in the west.
"There are reports the SEC has been in contact with Texas A&M and Virginia Tech about possibly joining the conference. There has also been speculation about Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State."
Link
well, Miller, if that's your basis, I'm going to have to call a big bluff on MJT's report.
A Houston radio station is reporting this.
Houston radio announcer says that SEC gave unconditional invitations to Virginia Tech and Texas A&M.
Miller's Oklahoma news seems like the most credible to me so far in terms of the SEC.
ESPN is about to talk about whether Kiffikin now regrets taking the USC job. Duh!!! It has to be one of the top bonehead moves in coaching.
so, where will OU go?
from Bevo Beat -
A highly-placed official from a Big 12 school confirmed Friday that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will join the Pac-10 Conference once formal offers are made to them, but said that Texas A&M officials remain on the fence between joining the Pac-10 or the SEC.
“The decision has been made,” the official told the American-Statesman. “We’re bringing everybody to the Pac-10 but A&M.”
who's right? Heupel or "the official"?
Sounds like Texas is speaking for the group....
If Texas running scared from the SEC isn't bad enough... If OU is letting TX speak for them, then how gutless and spineless are they?
I keep seeing conflicting information, but still think the OU to the SEC stuff seems like the most credible. There just isn't a lot of consistency in what I am reading, other than the original stuff about the Big8 South headed to the PacX.
I'd love for OU to come to the SEC just to spite TX.
ESPN is also saying OU, OSU, TT, and TX all going to Pac
Orangebloods has been pretty on top of the whole thing... It does seem as thought TX is wearing the pants (maybe capri pants?) here and dragging everyone mindlessly along with them...
Dan Beebe is attempting to keep the remaining 10 schools in the Big12 together. Good luck.
University of Oklahoma sources confirmed Friday that the school is headed to the Pac-10 but will wait for Texas to make its intentions known.
SteveFC - That's a joke, right?
Thanks THT. That seems more definitive than the Hoople thing. I guess it will be Texas Tuesday until we know for sure.
ESPN said it, but I can't believe Beebe sees any hope remaining here. I can believe the Big12 would stay together if just Colorado left, but Nebraska leaving pretty much seals the deal in my mind.
Can you imagine Auburn waiting to see what Alabama would do before deciding which conference to go to? Me neither. This does make Oklahoma look pretty pathetic.
you're right, SFC. I couldn't possibly care less what ua-t does... other than I hope they lose.
There is another Texas A&M/SEC connection I hadn't considered. I just heard Jackie Sherrill would like to see A&M in the SEC.
Let's make a dangerous assumption that Big10+2 stops at 12. If the divisions are based on proximity, Michigan PSU and OSU will be killing each other in the east while Nebraska will have an easier road to the championship game each year. Of course, that also assumes that Michigan returns to gridiron relevance, and Penn State remains relevant post Joe Pa. I think I've earned at least an assumption misdemeanor with all those assumptions.
East
PSU
OSU
Mich
Mich St
Indiana
Purdue
West
Illinois
NW
Wisc
Minn
Iowa
Neb
I was thinking along those lines, THT. Nebraska would be sitting in another weak division similar to the Big12 North. I am assuming they divide it up differently. Maybe Michigan ends up in the same division as Nebraska.
right now, that would make it even weaker!
will AU ever have a basketball schedule?
I just read something that tickles me.
Broyles also had something interesting to say about Arkansas after 18 years of SEC play: “We don’t have a rivalry.”
Indeed, Arkansas doesn't really have a rival in the SEC. Auburn or Ole Miss are probably as close to rivalries as they have.
Arkansas and LSU do play for a golden boot...
Yea, and Arkansas upset LSU not too long ago, but they aren't exactly big time rivals. Texas A&M is much more of a traditional rival of LSU, than Arkansas.
Arkansas and TX also had a longstanding rivalry... Arky was/is very much an old SWC team
Arkansas has actually played LSU more times than Texas A&M has, but there was a very long break in the Arkansas/LSU series until Arkansas joined the SEC.
Arkansas and Texas were basically the class of the SWC.
Everybodyyyyyyyy hurttssssssss
