The big news this morning: Earthquake in DC, magnitude 3.6. I slept through it. Unfortunately, the Capital and the White House are both unaffected.

In other news: It's HOT!!

OK, we sucked last year. The biggest problem was depth on defense. The offense had to change to try to give them some relief. I expect the defense to be deeper and moderately improved while the offense will be faster and get more snaps/game.

Hopefully, Cam will make a difference in those 3rd and 4th down stats.

What happened happened.

Time to stop looking back and start looking forward. New season starts in less than two months.

Good morning all.

WTC, thanks for all of the horrible stats. That just goes to show how good we could have been last year with just minor improvements. The D was bad but there were some reasons for it. They will be much better this year. They won't be a top 10 D but will be much improved. You can't underestimate what having more talent and more players can do for you. It doesn't always help in the game but it's all in the practice time. The special teams will also be much better. Because we have more numbers we can actually put starters on special teams instead of walk ons. As for the offensive struggles on 3rd and 4th downs I think that will improve with better play calling and a very mobile QB.

6:51 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Morning peeps.

WTC nice research. Well, nice that you did it, not that the #'s themselves were nice.

6:55 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

So I a guy I work with is a big South Carolina friend. He asked me what nicknames Hotties had for his school and others in the SEC to jokingly refer to?

Told him USCe was popular for the Gamecocks. Corndogs for LSU. What others we have?

7:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

WTC dropping the stats on us. We have to be far more efficient this year.

Hard to believe we are less than 2 months away.

7:13 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

ebro...
Let your co-worker know we'll give them a nickname the next time they're relevant.

7:39 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

Kentucky rushed for 282 on us? That's gross. No wonder I erased that one from my memory.

7:42 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Personally I don't think we sucked at all last year. But its my opinion that any year that you come out with a winning record, and don't score all the points in a 3-2 game precludes us from sucking. Although the UK and LSU games were not good

7:49 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Although evidently we ran the ball for 220 on UK and 174 on LSU. but sub 100 yd passing will not get you wins in the SEC. Oh and allowing the other team to have their way doesn't help either.

7:53 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

mtd...so in agreement. We could've done some things better, but we were probably about as good as we could be. We won some games we could have lost and lost some games we could have won. So it goes.

New year.

7:58 AM
Blogger Norm said...

NOT scoring 5 points in a contest resulting in a 3 - 2 score is a pretty decent indicator.

8:02 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The KY and LSU games were complete offensive disasters last year. I think total for the 2 games we had around 125 yards passing. I think the LSU game we had under 50 yards passing.

8:03 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Maybe I'm the one who is off, but I don't see why everyone is so worried about the Miss State game.

8:05 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Catching up on comments and just took a look at our 2004 schedyule, cause I'm in a little bit of a checking mood, and for those of you that don't remember here's who we played:

31-0 v.La-Monroe (5-6 record)
43-14 v Miss State (3-8)
10-9 v LSU (9-3)
33-3 v Citadel
34-10 v UT (10-3)
52-7 v La Tech (6-6)
38-20 v Arkansas (5-6)
42-10 v UK (2-9)
35-14 v Ole Miss (4-7)
24-6 v Georgia (10-2)
21-13 v Alabama (6-6)
38-28 v UT again
16-13 v Va Tech (10-3)

8:08 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

UK we passed for 95, LSU we passed for 81 and 34 yds of that were Caudle's 3 completions

Yeah the offense was definitely not working those two games.

I feel a lot better that we have at least something to back up Cam if he is not able to perform.

8:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

mtd,

Maybe it was just Todd who didn't have 150 total for those two games.

8:17 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

RK isn't the deal with MSU because of how well they finished, and how many folks they're bringing back?

My opinion, its still MSU and its still USCe. I'm gonna wait on the hype machine after the Ole Miss debacle where we found out, yeah its still Houston Nutt coarching.

8:17 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Just on paper, I'd say this years schedule is tougher than the 2004 schedule.

8:18 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

RK...

-Starting a new QB with little experience in a hostile environment, and they'll be even more hostile given some of Cam's connections to the school (and his Dad's comments)

-Outside of the Bama game, State was extremely tough at home last year.

-Dixon is a big loss for them, but their offense will be more settled a year in to the process. They also have some potential playmakers at WR and I expect Mullen to weave some magic to make that offense operate at at least a decent level. Their defense will probably still be suspect, but improved.

-I think Mullen's a pretty sharp guy and he'll have his team absolutely ready to play and that fanbase will be as amped as it has been in while with a bowl game being a realistic expectation.

Basically, I just don't expect anything to come that easily early on with a new starting QB playing against a decent team. Not saying we still aren't favorites, but I think it's gonna be a tough, tough game.

8:18 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I know the MSU game is a road Thursday game, but if we are the team we think we are, Dan Mullen or not it's still Miss State.

If we can't go in there and win, then it's going to be a long year.

8:19 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

You're right RK, a total of 127 for the TWO games. Not good.

8:19 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

So E-bro you're saying the problem is going to be those damned cowbells then aren't ya?!

8:21 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

RK...maybe that's the problem. I'm not as convinced as others that we are who we think we are.

I'm still shooting for the 8-4, 9-3 range. Either way, I think I'd still expect a tough game, though.

8:26 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

mtd...I'll be traveling to the game with a friend of mine who's a State fan. He'll be bringing his cowbell.

Oh boy!

8:27 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I actually think the Miss State game comes at a good time. It gets the 1st road game out of the way early, it's a short week, but it follows a game that shouldn't be much of a challenge and gives us extra time to prepare for a Clemson team that will be significantly different from last years team.

I'm sure State could prove me wrong.

8:27 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

E-bro,

As you know I'm not convinced either until I see offensive consistency, however I'm also of the mind set that State is State until proven otherwise.

RK-I am with you. Miss St. does not concern me. I think if AU is what many of us think they are, we win this game by 2+ TDs. Maybe 3.

St. still has a QB issue. No one has stepped up. they will be switching out like last year. We all know how that doesn't work.

State's QB situation isn't any more unsettled than it was last year. Tyson Lee's graduation wasn't the biggest loss for that program. Mullen's team played well at home last year.

They destroyed Ole Myth. Should have beaten LSU. Shot themselves in the foot against Houston and Ga. Tech, and gave Florida all they wanted.

I hope y'all are right, but I just don't see it, or rather, like I said, I'm not a believer in the 10-1, 11-0 heading into the IB hype being fed by some.

I'm not a believer in the 11-0/10-1 going into the Iron Bowl, but I am a believer in if we have any offensive consistency we should be 6-0 heading into the Arkansas game.

8-4 will be a bit of a downer but would be understandable. I think 9-3 is a real possibility and what I am shooting for. We have a chance to be better but unlikely.

10:24 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

E-Bro has it right with regard to MSU. They came very close to upsetting several teams last season and simply destroyed Ole Nutt.

We were fortunate last season and played them early. They improved significantly, while we started off great and then slumped mid season.

I have read a couple of articles that said MSU would contend for the SEC West. Yea, that sounds crazy to me too. But if we beat MSU, Clempson, and South Carolina, we will have a very good team. All three will likely be decent teams this season. We are unlikely to start as well as we did last season because we are replacing a starting QB and RB.

10:28 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

No way is this years schedule as tough as 2004. LSU, Georgia, and UT were all at the top of their game in 2004. Our out of conference schedule is certainly tougher, but overall we play a much easier schedule this season. Bama is the only team that comes close to being as good as LSU, Georgia, and UT in 2004.

10:39 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am guessing we go 9-3, but until we find out if we have a starting QB and RB, who knows?

10:40 AM
Blogger Baldy said...

Regarding Clemson's QB situation, does anybody know offhand when their qb has to decide whether he's going to play pro baseball or qb his final year? His choice should play a big role in how effective their offense will be, at least early in the season.

10:42 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I haven't read when the Clempson QB had to decide. I did read something about how the baseball team he signed with was willing to let him play football, but I am not certain about that.

10:54 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

i am never happy with a split of anything with arky-om-msu-usce etc. if AU is any good that is a 4-0 record with subs playing in the 4th. i don't think chizco is shooting for mediocrity. if so, start the new search now and have the new guy ready to bring in at season's end. the only teams that should consistently give AU trouble are the corndogs & turds and uf & ut when we play them-and also depends on where.

Arkansas has been consistently on our level.

South Carolina hasn't been, but the Ole Ball Cocks may have their best team under Spurrier this season.

10:57 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Arky has not consistently been on our level. Yes they play us tough but overall they are not at our level.

11:03 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Anyone who thinks they have been is degrading Auburn.

11:04 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

we beat the turds 6 in a row. arky goes in the can against bammer no matter how good they are and always seems to play over their skis the week of AU.

11:07 AM
Blogger API said...

The rest of the conference isn't taking the season off just because Auburn is on the upswing. Favored; probably. Stone cold lock; no.

If we can't beat Miss St. we probably won't have much of a season. I seem to recall a 6 - 0 Auburn teaming heading to Starkvegus and having our head handed to us on a biting cold and windy Saturday. Miss St. is very capable of beating us. We look past them at our own peril

11:08 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Unfortunately we've played down to Arkansas' level a lot of times over the years in our games against them.

Shocker Steve and I would disagree, but he just ran through about 5 posts in a row that I don't agree with.

time for a spencer region sighting. $aban is apparently no longer returning his calls and he has named wisconson his new leader. when asked about how some bammers have reacted to him during the recruiting process, the last part before you have pay for the garbage ends with the "all i can say is..." part. someone finished it for him.

"Regarding the Alabama fans, all I can say is ... I was at a family reunion the other week and my cousin was so hot in the dress she had on. I asked her out and we really hit it off. She doesn't have all her teeth because her ex-husband wasn't that nice a guy. Her two kids are really sweet. I have a lot of respect for her having dealt will all that and still being a senior in high school. I'm sure she'll graduate the second time around. I'm sure most Alabama fans will be able to relate to my situation and why it has been so confusing. So many in Cullman have reassured me they know what I'm going through. They've let me know I always have a job digging holes or at the landfill if the football thing doesn't work out. They've been great."

does he still have an AU offer? last i heard he does. he wouldn't be as easy to beat up for being an a** as deron furr

The SEC looks to be deeper and more competitive than it was in 2004. The lower level teams are more talented and dangerous than they were in 2004 and we aren't near the same level we were in 2004.

This years schedule on paper is tougher top to bottom. It's more grueling and we aren't as deep as 2004.

11:18 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Its unfortunate how the walmartians treat a kid that doesn't choose to go to their school. You never heard anything like that about the RB from Auburn that chose the dark side. Most everyone wished him well. It cracks me up how great they are in their own minds yet everyone else in the country has zero respect for them.
