The Five I'm Watching: Part II
TED ROOF
Defensive coordinator
- Age: 46
- College: Georgia Tech '85
- Previous role: Defensive coordinator, Minnesota (1998)
- Theme song: ``Down in It," Nine Inch Nails
- Relevant lyric: "All the world's weight is on my back and I don't even know why."
THE GOOD: Ted Roof has the experience and knowledge you'd expect from someone whose career is rooted in coaching college defenses. Fellow coaches were impressed by the things Roof did during his season at Minnesota. He took a terrible defense and made it average during a period of six months. He did it with a series of odd formations, blitzes, schemes. So you know he's competent. Roof doesn't struggle with confidence, which means the memories of Auburn's terrible 2009 season -- the team set a record for points allowed -- likely won't affect his approach in a negative way this fall. He'll have more talent and more bodies at his disposal this time around; Roof was limited last season by a defense that featured few reliable reserves. Two FBS assistant coaches have told me they'll be surprised if the Tigers' defense isn't significantly better in 2010. They believe in Roof.
THE BAD: The numbers. Auburn's defense wasn't very good last season. What happened? We know Roof was compromised by a lack of depth on defense, which forced him to consider conserving his linebackers after halftime. He said that wasn't a thought, that Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens were fit enough to handle 90 snaps, but I don't believe him. The Tigers were more base than they should have been during the season's second half. Talk all you want about Jessel Curry, but he's a freshman. Eltoro Freeman remains an unknown. The same goes for Jonathan Evans. Is the linebacker corps going to be that much better? I sense that coach Gene Chizik will feel pressure to make a change at coordinator if the team doesn't make significant defensive progress this season. I still project the team's defense to be below average, though it's impossible to assess any of Roof's strategic adjustments at this stage. Maybe he's developed something innovative during the past six months.
THE REALITY: Auburn will be better on defense. That's the key to the team's overall success because we know (with some degree of certainty) that the Tigers will average at least 23 points per game. That creates a reasonable margin for error. Still, I expect defense to be a weakness.
What do you think? Speak your mind!

Norm, all is right in my world now that you have flipped.
Some of us can flip pages without banhammerbation. Just saying.
I'm so happy to oblige.
Raiders sign Walt McFadden
maybe I missed that on the prior page, I'm too lazy to look.
Cam Newton is an important component of Mississippi State's season
So I work from home today, a few con-calls and a fair dose of busy work in store for me. F4* is 3 1/2. After his nap, I fix him something to drink and complain to him that earlier today we had a nice rain shower and I was planning on cutting the grass after my last con-call but that now it's thundering again which could really mess up my plans. He's of course gravely concerned for my plight. Then I say it'll be nice when he can cut the grass for me. I say "when can you cut the grass for me? Next year?" He says "uhm, I don't really think so dad." So I say, "well then, how about when you're 5? Can you cut the grass for me then?" F4* says "no dad". I say "if you can't cut it when you're 5, maybe when you're 6 you can cut it. If not, then I don't know what else to do but keep cutting it myself for the next several years and I'm not too happy about that. No I'm not" F4* says "gosh, that's really too bad dad."
That boy's really too smart for his own good. All that was lacking was him saying "sucks to be you". I can't imagine how he comes by his smart aleck attitude. For the life of me I really can't.
Got stuck on the phone and missed the actual page flip, but now I feel good about leaving. Nice job, Norm. I'm sure you couldn't have done it without Harrison, though. Michael says he's supposed to get the credit for everything around here.
It isn't football, but it is entertaining. I am starting to get hooked on the Fulmer Cup competition. I'm pulling for Georgia.
Is it just me or is it getting dark earlier.
No rain on the banks of the Coosa River in over two weeks. All around but not here.
I live fairly close to FSJ and he holds secret meetings. Just saying, it might be a girl scout meeting planning cookie sells.
I'm with you digger. Not a drop of rain here in Trussville for a couple of weeks. I am afraid to walk on my lawn.
Oh and I forgot to mention that G tricked us with this thread. I never thought about a coach as one to watch.
Why do some people feel that Lebron should have told Cleveland ahead of time? In the real world we give two weeks notice, but sports isn't the real world. Franchises don't usually tell players before they are traded or cut.
Mrs THT would be a terrible flight attendant. She has fuzzy pom poms on her fingers. You think she can scoop ice without getting fuzz in it? I doubt it.
Yeah, I'm late to the party. So? Wanna fight about it?
PF never hangs out with us anymore. Then he wants to just show up and act like everything is fine.
Has anyone seen WTC? I need to know what is up with Chris Jones.
I'll tell you what's up with Chris Jones. Shenanigans and funny business, that's what.
Chris Jones found a bag of money and decided that Auburn did not leave it for him...he's gone.
PF - that's not your concern since you'll be sitting in coach listening to Michael's Eurasian plumber tales. Trust me, first class customers love pom pom fuzz in their beverages.
I got not problem with what LeBron did. I do think his manager and the Reverend Jesse Jasson have made fools of themselves.
Warning: you really shouldn't trust any comment I make about how things work in first class. I don't even know where it is. Maybe you can ask 2.0 or LGGB; they've been there more than I have.
First Class has more comfortable seating, better food, better looking personnel, better looking passengers (typically) and they often smell better.
So that's what is on the other side of the curtain.
Nice to see that McFadden signed with the Raydas
I agree something funny has gone on with C. Jones. For months we have been his leader and he was on the verge of committing but then all of a sudden we are not even in the picture. Either he found that bag of money or we backed off for some reason.
The minions of the Exalted Tusk ride again.
Here is the deal with Jones:
"I am an Alabama fan," he said. "I would love to play for Alabama. Right now they're picking up big recruits and I know it's going to take hard work to go in and start right off the bat. If they offer, I would be hesitant not to just commit but I still want to take a look at all my options."
As I understand it the darkside offered a month a so ago. Trust me we never backed off Jones. We offered early on, then Florida, then Sabear offered. Sound like a prospect we would back off of. As fans sometimes we make something out of nothing. Maybe the kid who grew up a bammer got the offer he dreamed of. Let's not sound like the bammers when Region committed to us with all this somethings fishy, bags of money, etc. Now if we lose Rose we have a problem.
Feng doesn't like Jones anyways.
Feng says, and I concur, that we should take up a collection to get Chris Berman off the air.
I think this marks the 2nd time I've had to agree with Feng.
Hey everybody. Not been as active for a while. Toomuch TOur de France coverage for me to get everything done.
It was an off day today for le Tour.
Watched the replay tonight on Versus.
Lance took too many hits to stay in the top. he prolly cold not have won it, but it would have been a good story to get close.
Yeah, I thought it was a good omen when he did so well in the Prologue given his time trialing hasn't been the best since he started his Comeback, but starting with the Cobblestones last week, he's been served up a continuous streak of bad luck.
Yesterday was brutal for him. Le Tour in general has been brutal towards Americans. Vandevelde already crashed out. Ace Sprinter Tyler Farrar has crashed a few times. Hopefully Levi can challenge for a podium. And then big George Hincapie (my favorite American cyclists) is helping to pave the way for current yellow jersey leader Cadel Evans.
So it's not all bad news I guess, but not great either.
Weeman ...that's a lot of specific detail on Jones.
I'm guessing that any "bags of money" type accusations posted on the HABOTN are only meant to mock Bammers.
Cincy ...Beer with fruit is designed for Yuppies. I mistakenly opened and tasted BL-lime once. It has a definite lime-aid additive taste.
maybe AU has since offered a number of new dbs that are now higher up the coaches' wishlist now that they have had a chance to properly evaluate players. that could hurt a recruit's feelings real fast after being told he is a high priority for a long time and then some better players get interested in AU.
i hope mr. region has been carrying a voice recorder around with him since february...i would love to hear the advice, offers and threats he and his family received in the wake of his AU commitment. i still hope we get him if the coaches want him, which i have read they do.
if all the rumors being thrown around this summer pan out in the next few years, uscw's problems will be an anthill in the shadow of mullet mountain. it would be the biggest story in college football history. the joke now is that the feds are changing RICO to RECO. google bryant jr. and alabama reassurance fraud investigation. it would be interesting to know where $200 million went... right about the time the universitah needed a new, high-priced football coach. linky!
Nice hefty post Chip Chip. I have heard Elvis and Jim Morrison are alive and living an alternate lifestyle in France. Nobody has been able to prove me wrong.
a little late nite unsubstantiated conjecture. god i hope it is true. elvis is doing fine by the way. cutting out the mayo & cheese sandwiches with extra mayo does wonders for your longevity. sadly, i have visited jim's grave and assume the worst.
Good morning all.
Yes Hoopie is right about the bags of money comments. However, we can't all be naive enough to think that funny business doesn't go on.
Hey
Morning Hotties.
We're one day closer.
If this happens to be election day wherever you may live, get out and vote. Mine's officially next week, but I'll probably try the vote early option this afternoon.
Keep Hate Alive.
Cincy,
I know I'm several hours late, but Bud Light w/Lime is awful. It's like pond water, and not the water of a good well kept pond, more like a Jersey pond with all the dead mob bodies, chemical waste and stuff.
By the way, don't know if anyone saw this or not, but Bo Jackson is a wanted man in Orange County today after murdering a softball during the celebrity/legends game.
werk - dang, I was just trying to be nice by saying "it's not the worst beer I've ever had." But, I agree with your opinion. A buddy has been adding his own lime to The King of Beers for years, I don't see the appeal. The only time I think lime helps is if I'm forced to drink a Corona, then, it's an improvement. Corona is awful.
Norm- Hate is alive and well. And yes, we are one day closer, which means...
53 days til kickoff!
GO TIGERS!!!
WARRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
It appears I have been wise in purposefully avoiding BL Lime.
That confirms it. I will stick to wine. Your comments continue to reinforce my opinion that beer tastes like pee out of a boot. Thank you.
Now Cincy, there are some fine tasting beers out there. Paulaner or Hoegaarden are top notch summertime brews.
ehyou,
Everyone says "You just have to develop a taste for it". Why do I need to develop a taste for one more thing that is full of calories and is just going to add another layer of fat to the fanny I'm trying to get rid of? These are the questions for the ages.
Don't knock pee out of a boot until you've tried it.
You make a good point. I guess it helps to simply like beer.
#53? SWEET! HAPPY KEN BERNICH DAY THT!
first post i see this morning is about beer. this is going to be a good day!
Cincy ...a dry red wine = relaxation without excessive calories. In the summertime a dry white wine is the second best solution. Beer has calories from the alcohol and from the carbohydrates ....plus it has yeast which spurs hunger for more carbohdrates.
i didn't start liking beer really till my late 20's now i can't really stand hard stuff. i'm happy with a couple Sam Adams' or Yuengling's. it's like candy. yum.
In order to drink pee out of a boot ..someone had to pee into the boot.
Other than target practicing to ring the boot, I'm wondering why they would do that.
Congrats to those who had George Steinbrenner in the death pool.
Apparently Yankee owner George Steinbrenner had a heart attack and died this morning.
Apparently Jay G. Tate was a step faster than me.
wow. first their PA announcer then this.
I guess I am in the minority, but BL Lime is pretty good. You should try it Cincy. Now Miller Lite Lime is terrible (its probably what pee in a boot would taste like).
I just tried posting a link to that same story...
I have always hated the Yankees and by extension Mr Steinbrenner. However, I wish him nothing but afterlife joy and success.
Develop a taste for beer??? This could be true except for those of us who were given beer as a very young person. I don't rmember ever not liking beer. Now I would not recommend this for young parents but it happened at my house and I have lived a happy, productive life so it can't be all bad.
Congratulations to Auburn's newest millionaire, Walt McFadden
He's guaranteed $1.99 million from the Raiders.
yup, that's not a bad way to make a living.
If only it wasn't the Raiders.
well, since Steinbrenner's gone, is Al Davis next on the watch list?
Steinbrenner's gone? Maybe the Yankees will now re-hire Geroge Costanza. Big, rich dogs eating up the poor, small dogs ..it's an ugly, but valid element of capitalism.
Congrats to Walt McFadden, a 3 star, 2005 recruit out of Pompano Beach, Fl.
I noticed that in one of his recent interviews Bo spoke highly of Al Davis. Ya don't hear that much.
Al Davis vs Lame Kitten ....LMAO
BL Lime is for chicks.
Well, I'm a chick, so there you go.
But I do think I will stick to my white wine with an occasional red thrown in.
New thread UPZ. Substançio!
Michael, don't you have some goats to tend to?
Back to the Chris Jones topic. It seems that there is something brewing behind the scenes. Its not that he doesn't like Auburn. Maybe it is grades or something to do with the NCAA.
If you have 3 minutes to spare go to You Tube and look up the "Dad Life" video. It's hilarious.
