Tony Barbee speaks
Hey everyone. It's been a while, but I promise that I've been working.
GannettWorldCup.com has been rollin' along with the little soccer tournament in Africa. Thanks to E-Bro, Eddie, Peter, Scott Chocolate, ehyou and Jimmy for hanging out over there.
So what do we have here today?
Your new men's basketball coach, Tony Barbee, participated in the SEC's summer teleconference. We didn't learn a lot per se, but he spoke. And we listened.

- On the team's situation heading into Barbee's first season:
``We're starting over having lost 80 percent of our scoring and 80 percent of our rebounding. The majority of our team being either freshmen or sophomores and only two returning juniors and only really one of those played in Frankie Sullivan. We're starting over, but it's exciting to start over in that way because you get the chance to mold a younger group of players who haven't been set in their ways having gone through a system for several years. It's going to be kind of like molding clay. Every day is going to bring a different challenge especially with Frankie Sullivan, an experienced guard. I think he is a solid guard in this league. Beyond that, we don't have much experience left. It's starting over." - On Luke Cothran, the power forward signee who is expected to be very good:
``I think Luke brings us a different level of talent to this program than this program has seen in quite some time. He's one of those 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 hybrid forwards that can score from different angles from the perimeter and obviously the 3-point line. He's great around the basket because he's got great feet for a big man. He's got a knack for rebounding the ball, so there's no question he'll bring a lot to the team as a freshman." - On anything he's learned so far in terms of evaluating current players:
``Anytime you take over a new position, you go through a pretty long evaluation process and we're still in that phase with the limited amount of access that I've had to my returning players and to the incoming recruits. Anytime a new coach takes over, there's always transition. You've got to make sure it's a fit both ways, for the player and for myself and my staff and for my system and how we are going to do things. I'm pretty pleased with how the current team is shaping up with the returners from last year's team and with the signees that we were able to put together here in the late spring signing period." - On Frankie Sullivan:
``Frankie is a kid that I have known for a long time. He used to come to our camps when I was at Memphis as an assistant there, so I've known him for a long time. He's one of those guys that you want your entire team to play like, with reckless abandon. He's not going to back down no matter who he plays against. That's what Frankie brings to the court and, hopefully, he's going to step up in a leadership role now. He's one of the veterans that we have on this team. Frankie brings you a guy who can put points on the board. With the type of offense I'd like to run here depending on the personnel we have based around the dribble-drive and attacking the paint, whether it's on the drive or the post-up, I think Frankie will be able to be very productive in this offense."

Substance
Good words for Frankie I hope he can play alot and produce for this team.
It'll all be on Frankie.
Not sure he's going to be the superstar Barbee is forecasting.
I don't believe it.
There's another Peter? I saw a Pete over there, who I can assure everyone is not me. He apparently watched that crap. I have long held that I do not.
AU Basketball fans need to be content just to see how Barbee develops talent for the first year or 2. And folks thought Tubs left the cupboard bare.
Did Luke ever arrive on the Plains?
Frankie won't be a super star but I think he will be solid under a good coach.
Well, maybe we'll get this one to 1,000+.
Two hundred gets me anxious, Norm.
You must've been really anxious lately then.
I've got a little something else going to ease the anxiety.
Headed to Mammoth Cave in a few days. Haven't been since 1986. Doubt it's changed much.
Hi Jay, we're missing you, but doing our best to keep it going without any real football news. But it is getting closer.
Everyone has been behaving very nicely, well, except for a few instances of name calling, ninny, platypus, Neville and the like.
Peter is a ninny. I know this because someone here said so.
No one here would lie, so it must be. Peter is a ninny.
Eh, people here have said worse about better people.
Braves have bases loaded, no out in bottom of 7th. Score is 0-0 against Washington.
I am pretty excited about seeing what Barbee can do. It should be interesting to see the basketball team move around on offense. I always considered that a key.
Braves score 2, just 1 out. Some good base running and a little luck.
cincy - for a moment I thought you were nuts. As I watch, it's 0-0 with two outs in the top of the 7th. Then I remembered that I'm watching it delayed since I did yardwork tonight.
Oh, Norm, I 'm sorry. I wouldn't have posted that if I had known. I hate spoiling things.
But, you're going to love the bottom of the 7th :)
Heck, it's not as if it's the post-season or anything. Had it been a real important game, I'd have announced I was watching on a delay. No worries.
I'm at 2-0, Strasburg leaving the game now.
It gets better. . .
Cincy must have ESP.
I, however, have no comment on ESPN.
I have a comment about ESPN - Comcast recently added ESPN 3D to my lineup but as best as I can tell, they've only shown a few soccer games in 3D. Not that it really matters to me since I don't have a 3D set. Therein ends my ESPN comment.
I don't mean to sound like a buggy-whip enthusiast circa 1901, but 3D television doesn't sound like a great idea.
I don't want to wear those glasses. Period.
3D is a fad that I hope passes quickly. I don't like it.
Comcast needs to get with the program and get me Comedy Central in HD. It's on the listings, but is not coming through the line yet. I got to experience Futurama in surround sound and HD via Into the Wild Green Yonder on Blu-Ray, and would like that same satisfaction with season 6 as it is aired.
Jay G and Me. Same page.
I don't really see 3D taking that great a hold but what do I know. I have Comedy Central in HD with my Comcast. I don't understand how they roll it out. A coworker who lives around 10 miles from me has probably 10 less HD channels than I do and we both have Comcast.
DISH Network has a lot of HD.
I turn my nose up at stuff that's SD now. Yuck.
Yeah, Channels under 403 don't really exist, except in case of emergency.
The College World Series is a wonderful event except for that stinkin' troll Mike Patrick.
At a quick glance, if I had all the Premium Channels, I'd have 116 HD Channels through my Comcast. I refuse to watch the standard channels but I'll record some stuff for F4* off of them so they don't chew up my DVR space.
To steal a phrase from PF....3D TV is gay.
Sullivan will be really good in Barbee's offense. Mark it down. Sullivan is a ball player and he can score.
The dribble-drive was made for Speed Reed.
Braves game over, but I won't tell you who won.
I'm no longer delayed on the game. I know who won. But thanks for the consideration.
Reed was too inconsistent and a poor free throw shooter. Sullivan on the other hand will thrive. He has a great ability to to get to the rim. If they try to close that off he will find the open shooter and if they foul him well he was one of the best in the SEC if not country last year.
Bedtime for Norm. Peace, I'm outta here.
I am hopeful for Frankie, but I'm with Jay Gizzle on this one ... he's gonna have to show me.
Count me as not being sold on Sullivan on anything but a role player. Contrary to what some believe he will not be the next big thing. Basketball will be rebuilding minimum 3yrs.
I'll bite. I think Frankie could be special in the right setup. When I say special, I don't quite mean soaring the heights of the two Chuck's, but I think he could be an All-SEC calibre (okay, maybe not first team, but second team, etc.) player.
Defensive Breakdown
DL - Bammer lost all their starters here, but this is where they are the deepest at should be a real strength for the darkside. Dareus is the truth and will be a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft barring injury. Our beloved Tigers have something up front we didn't have last year - DEPTH! We can play up to 6 DT's throughout the game and a couple of newcomers, Lemonier and Bonomolo, will be in the rotation before the end of August! We lost Coleman but we won't feel that at all. I'm so excited about this unit and believe they aren't getting the national respect they deserve. Edge Bammer
LB - The turds have talent oozing at this position and will be a strong point of their team by mid year. The Auburn LB's should be the team's most improved unit. Bynes and Stephens are All SEC guys but would never get voted because of the lack of media respect we get. Bates may move up or stay at safety. It doesn't matter because Holland, Owens, and White will all contribute. Holland and Owens will be freshamn All-Americans! Enjoy these guys now because they won't be around but 3 years. If Freeman can contribute the way he is capable then I believe this unit will be one the SEC's best. Too much talent here - Edge Auburn
DB's - Bammers lost everybody except Barron. Kirkpatrick is highly thought of but lacks physicallity and the other corner spot is being filled by 5* bust Scott or freshman. Safety for them will be Barron and someone else who will probally be a Woodall clone. Our secondary could go 1 of 2 ways if everyone returns healthy could become a real solid unit. Time for Neiko to step up and become an allsec caliber player. The safety position I am quite positive will be in good hands just need the corners to step up. Edge here Turds(Sabear is as good as it gets w DB's)
Coming tommoro schedule breakdown
Coming tomorrow, you should get your own blog. Seriously. You have enough material to just put it there and link it.
I'm kinda with Peter on this one.
With that said, I enjoy Weeman's stuff. I keep laughing at calling Alabama "the turds."
A Weeman blog sounds like a cool idea. It just needs a snappy name, like the sunshine pumper or something like that.
Good morning, Hotties! Are we going to hear any football news today? I keep wishing. Off to walk before it hopefully rains!
We got a small storm last night in the Noog. It was nice.
Greetings from the BuyMore SuperCenter, where it looks like it's going to be a miserably busy day. Huge crowds lined up to get their iClone 4, our latest do-it-yourself home cloning kit.
So, your iClone's ears are upside down? Don't worry, we have an app for that. For $39.99, you can purchase our new Gravity Independent iEarBuds.
67 days til kickoff!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
WARRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
JGT - last I heard, Mammoth Cave is still a big hole. I haven't been since '71. Let me know if there's something worthy of a return visit.
Good morning all. Pretty good breakdown Weeman. I think we will be more talented on D this year, but we still have a lot to improve on....tackle....tackle....tackle. This side of the ball is the most important to our success this year. If they improve at all we will have a better year.
As Thornton Mellon would say, Mammoth Cave is ... mammoth.
HAPPY #67 ED KING DAY, 1990 ALL-AMERICAN OL.
good luck @ the BuyMore. we're doing inventory all week here in east tennessee. joy.
No more Michael Scott on the Office after next season....that Sucks!
Pat Dooley of Gainesville Sun Ranks the SEC Programs
Steve Carell went six or seven seasons (depending on how you catalog seasons) and that was a lot longer than anyone expected.
I love Kim Clijsters.
"The Office" is a little too realistic to actually watch. I can only watch for about 5 minutes or so and it be becomes painfully funny. Way too painful to watch an entire episode.
Nipon Fever!!!
Catch it!!!!
Eddie ..linky no worky.
THat's great that Dooley ranked us as the third best program in the SEC. I think we're more like 4th or 5th with UGA and LSU still above us. The good news is that UGA and LSU are gradually slipping and we're moving upward. If these trends continue, we could easily be 3rd in a year or 2. UAT and UF have a lot of substance in their programs, so moving over them will take a few more years.
Now if Urban will go on a permanent leave of absence and $atan will take the money and go live full time at Lake Burton, then we will be at our rightful #1 spot much quicker.
Just call me Pollyanna....
I'm headed out to stimulate the economy by getting a manicure and pedicure in honor of July 4th. And then i am going to hope we get some of the rain they are having down south. I so hate to have to put the sprinkler on.
Have fun today!
Carell is great, but his movie career has taken flight. I bet NBC offered him the moon though. The writers are good enough to figure out a way to replace him and keep it rolling for a few more seasons. This is Dwight's big chance....
Hey, Pollyanna!
Just say "no" to crack.
Basketball substance during the football season.
Welcome substance from the leader of the Hotties.
Football season already?
The lightning crashed the thunder roared on the banks of the Coosa River for almost an hour but not one drop of rain did fall.
How does it do that?
God is great, Beer is good, people are crazy.
E-Bro - if it's not May, then it's football season.
digger - you've put the following in my head, which is certainly better than someone bringing up that Phoebe Snow crap the other day...
Long ago we laughed at shadows
Lightning flashed and thunder followed us
It could never find us here
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer
I was born to rock the boat
Some may sink but we will float
Grab your coat - let's get out of here
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer
Who's going to the Arkansas St. game?
we are
I plan to as well. I hope to be at the first three home games.
I wish they would quit having home games on Labor Day weekend. I would rather be at the beach or lake.
Yes, EBro it is now football season. Baseball (& basketball)are now TOO long. I won't get interested in baseball again until world series, maybe. I go to the games but it is just a game until the end of the season.
Don't know about now, but back in the day the Alabama dove season typically started the Saturday of Labor day weekend. We shot dove and listened to AU football on a radio. After shooting Dove for 2 weekends in a row, we would realize that it was late September and we should be gettin' on back to school.
Early September is too hot, therefore I'm content watching football on TV.
I'll be at the game!!!
Hoopie,
I linked Chris Low's link that article in the last thread...of course, it'd probably be easier to just go to Low's blog and find it than look for a post in the last thread.
I don't think the show survives without Carell.
Maybe they'll just go raid the Daily Show's talent again. Or former talent.
Rob Cordry anyone?
E-Bro,
...and just write them in as Michael Scott, pretending that there wasn't an obvious casting change.
Honestly, can they not hire someone else to make awkward faces and say "that's what she said"?
e-bro- I like the Rob Cordry pick or Rob Riggle who is underrated
Bewitched did it, why can't The Office? I bet it took you a full year to realize that they'd switched Darren's on you.
there was a Darren on Bewitched?
Yeah, Riggle could do it. The guy's a former Marine for goodness sake.
Semper Fi!!
i gotta git back to work, so let me go ahead and say...
and a HELLO KENNESAW GEORGIA!!!!!!
That did it with 3's Company too.
Bout time scottie.
"Come on knock on our door....We've been waiting for you...."
easy you ninny!
I have beautiful fingers and toes in a lovely shade of strawberry margarita, Perfect for the 4th of July.
We will be at the Arkansas game. I love being in Auburn for Labor Day weekend!
Sorry, it had been so long since we had the combo of a THT Beasley and a scottie Kennesaw post.
We were due.
thanks E-Bro. it has been a while since THT & i had that superb combo. we were due. thx!
I betchya they offer Ricky Gervais the job. Heck, he was the one Michael Scott was modeled after to begin with.
I believe I recall them replacing Ginger on the old Gilligan's island movies after the series ended. I was devastated.
Well for that matter, we had a different Jan on the Brady Bunch tv series than we did the tv movies. That didn't bother me though as long as they didn't mess with Marcia.
pre-Christophere Nolan reboot, I always thought Michael Keaton (the original) was the best Batman.
But Major League 2 didn't really suffer without Wesley Snipes as Willie Mays Hays.
I could go on.
it was hard to keep up with all those Bradley girls. All though there was only 1 Betty Jo, there were 2 Bobbie Jos and 3 Billie Jos.
Fortunately, there was only one Uncle Joe.
"All though"?????????????
Ginger or Maryanne?
Discuss.
Uncle Joe was my favorite character, but I did prefer looking at all the others.
Ginger!! A poor man's Marilyn Monroe.
Mary Anne ...younger, sweet personality, pretty with less makeup and probably a screamer.
Where are my fellow Generation Y peeps at to move this comparison forward a little bit?
MaryAnne you'd take home to meet your mother and your grandmother. Ginger...well, you'd just take her home.
Monica or Rachel from Friends....?!?!?!?!
That's still a little too Generation X, bro.
But...Rachel. Definitely Rachel.
so what decade are you wanting to pick from E-Bro, the 80's?
Nah, on second thought, we can reach as far back as the 90s I suppose.
Alright, your proposed candidates?
Yeah, I got nothing. We can head back to Gilligan's if y'all want. I'll just abstain from commenting.
Epic Battle of the Sitcom Characters...
Samantha vs Jeannie
The Golden Girls was in the early 90's. Bea Arthur or Betty White?
Sorry - had to.
Is our hoops schedule going to be released one game at a time during the season?
I guess it speaks well to the fidelity of the HABOTN men that nobody has responded to any of these queries by saying "both".
That or nobody has thought to yet.
Judge Jet's Sitcom Pronouncements:
1. Judge Norm's ruling in the case of Summers v. Grant is hereby UPHELD.
2. In re Samantha v. Jeannie, this court rules in favor of SAMANTHA.
3. This court hereby presumes J-Z and CARMELA are married under the common law.
4. Baldy, because of the mention of Bea Arthur, you are hereby held in CONTEMPT OF COURT. You are sentenced to 30 days of working in the Bammer T-shirt section of the nearest Walmart. May God have mercy on your soul.
The last time I saw Mary Ann she was being stalked by a crazed killer in "The Town That Dreaded Sundown."
For Jet has none.
she also was arrested for posession of marijuana a few years ago
i'll take Barbara Eden as Jeannie. i had a crush on her as a kid. heck, i still do. :)
If it please the court, Jet, E-BRO's cries for more recent selections to choose from led me down this horrid path!! His youthful status required me to go to such depths as the 90's STUNK in the arena of memorable sitcoms. I blame him.
Does this make me an accesory to...well, something?
Or am I an enabler?
ENABLER!!!!!!!
Important to remember:
Two wrongs don't make a right.
Two Wrights make an airplane.
Three rights make a left.
a ninny, an enabler, an accessory. Wow, E-Bro is all things to all people. I'm impressed.
Renaissance man am I.
"The Town That Dreaded Sundown" had my most favoritest cheesiest movie death scene ever when the hooded murder put the knife on the slide end of the trombone and played it while stabbing his victim with the bayoneted slide.
Ebro ...
I believe that's "reninnysance man."
I'm in that no-mans land between gen X and Gen Y. Kelly Kapowsi is the only girl for me. They tried to write her off the show multiple times. It just didn't work.
I don't know about the Town That Dreaded Sundown but I'll tell you that it isn't very pretty what a town without pity can do.
greatest show of all time PF. i can watch it for hours straight
Pete...I was gonna bring up Kelly Kapowski. But then I thought, really, there is no comparison, so what's the point?
Harrison...I have, numerous times.
Yeah. True...Lisa Turtle tried to be hot. She wasn't in the same league.
Wikipedia says I can be in Generation X or Y. Interesting.
And let's face it, Jesse Spano did Showgirls b/c she was tired of living in Kelly's shadow.
She went from being a tease to being a...well, maybe you've seen the movie or heard through a third party what it was about.
I'm right on the border of X and Y as well.
Generations, that is. Nothing else.
Buncha young punks.
Showgirls was probably a pretty bad career move on Jessie's part. It will make for more than a few awkward moments on the reunion show in a few years. "So Jessie, what did you do after you graduated??!"
Yes, I realize I'm crossing over between a TV show and her movie role. I just don't care. Reality, schmeality.
Kelly Kapowski....simply amazing.
Speak English people, I have no idea what you're talking about here.

Norm!
Norm...Kelly Kapowski es mas mujer bonita en el mundo. Es verdad.
Quit speaking Mexican.
I never watched that show, but I do appreciate the fine talents displayed.
I am officially pulling for Paraguay.
Mary Ann, Jeannie, KaPOWski.
Did ya see what I did there, pretty clever huh? I'm sure that's never been done before either.
Annnnnnd back to work
Question: If I thought Kelly Kapowski was hot when I was 8-12 years old, and she was a teenager, what am I allowed to feel when I look at a picture of her as a teenager now that I am old and have kids of my own?
MJT - you bottle those feelings up and push them deep down inside where all feelings belong. Never to be let out.
michael...anything you want.
Anything you want.
Jet's 2:52 post is what I get for hanging around HABOTN throughout the day. Time to leave before I hear something I don't on Spain-Portugal.
Luego caliente unos.
E-bro, it was just a reference to the girl from the pictures.
I mean, my first love, Stephanie Tanner, isn't even an issue because she is so young. But Kelly was probably around 18. So you know, we are entering a gray area here. Just saying.
Not that I'm saying. Just saying.
EBro ... when you find out how they did, let me know ... I just saw a photo.
What is all this foreign langauge business on the HABOTN?
Oooka booka looka. See, I can do it too.
Michael, I hope there was a hop in there. Without the hop, that means something completely different and quite unpleasant.
I was about to say Michael likely just insulted about 3 million people and doesn't even know it. You must ALWAYS include the hop after booka. Otherwise, it's trouble.
You guys know what I meant. No hop intended.
Put that in your pooblah and jinko it.
We would all be better off if the world would just adopt a single language. I suggest that language be limited to words appearing in Grand Funk Railroad tunes. The world would be a better place.
Gunga galunga gunga - gunga galunga.
Come on people!!! Do the locomotion and save the planet!!!
that, or get on your feet and be a part of the 'Rhythm Nation.'
C'mon ride the train!
Just remember, Michelle, Tamika and Tonya wanna ride this train.
Where's Harrison? I order that he be here when Puppet Hour rolls around or else.
For those of you who may have missed it, Robert Byrd passed away. I believe he was the longest serving Senator. The guy had been around forever.
It is so time for football to start. The Locomotion, Rhythm Nation, really?
Good job, Michael.
Jeez.
Cincy, remember, we are all some kind of wonderful.
i made it but not because Michael demanded it... i made it on my own accord
Grand Funk Railroad says
"Come on, take me, take me, and make me feel your music". We can all learn from that.
rememeber when Punky Brewster grew and and grew those gigantic boobies...that was pretty awesome
JaSteve, you are a funny man. Thanks for the smiles. And the awful lyrics that are stuck in my head!!
Bwahahaha!!! Some kind of wonderful is a great song. I suppose I could switch the Chuck Berry lyrics. I could do Neil Diamond, but I don't admit to listening to him.
The stock market plunged over 260 points today. Does anyone know why it is Nick Saben's fault?
GFR is annoying.
PF, that just means you haven't listened to enough Grand Funk Railroad. Listen to "I'm Your Captain" for 10 straight hours and call me in the morning. It should clear up the problem. Kids these days have no soul.
I sold my soul to the robot devil. I needed the cash, and saw no need for it.
Listening to some Badfinger is another alternative, although I think half the members of that band ended up committing suicide, so maybe not.
I prefer "21st Century Schizoid Man" by April Wine. I've always liked that title.
What about Bad Brains?
Norm, that I can handle...Nice.
Or, "If You See Kaye" also by April Wine.
I counter with GFR doing Gimme Shelter!!! Can't beat it.
Don't make me go all Al Jolson on you!!!
You're too one dimensional
Al Jolson and Grand Funk Railroad are far from the same dimension. I just acknowledge that the music died sometime in the early 90s. There has been no music in the 21st century. I may rock me some Al Green later.
"If You See Kay" reminds me of a classmate of ours, Norm, who absolutely sent our senior English teacher into orbit regarding that song.
The Harmonicats was yesterday, but I might have to bring it back.
You go Jolson and GFR all you want. I'll stick with my combination of groups and artists on my iPod. They all speak English quite well.
Just listened to an old fave on the iPod ... "Who's Behind the Door?" by Zebra. Now checking in on "All Day and All of the Night" by The Kinks.
Jet - my first guess would be one of the transient Air Force brats R.H. Am I close?
Jamming Chuck Berry at the moment, although Sweet Little 16 might get you arrested these days.
It was the same young man who ran out with the team at the baseball pep rally with the "I Suck!" sign.
Initials: D.S.
Ah yes. We did have some characters. I don't recall the incident regarding the song but my imagination can do wonders just knowing the parties involved.
Hahahaha, well, an "I Suck" sign does show initiative.
Fliptacular coming. Where is Norm?
Who's flippin' it?
