Tony Barbee speaks

Hey everyone. It's been a while, but I promise that I've been working.

GannettWorldCup.com has been rollin' along with the little soccer tournament in Africa. Thanks to E-Bro, Eddie, Peter, Scott Chocolate, ehyou and Jimmy for hanging out over there.

So what do we have here today?

Your new men's basketball coach, Tony Barbee, participated in the SEC's summer teleconference. We didn't learn a lot per se, but he spoke. And we listened.

  • On the team's situation heading into Barbee's first season:
``We're starting over having lost 80 percent of our scoring and 80 percent of our rebounding. The majority of our team being either freshmen or sophomores and only two returning juniors and only really one of those played in Frankie Sullivan. We're starting over, but it's exciting to start over in that way because you get the chance to mold a younger group of players who haven't been set in their ways having gone through a system for several years. It's going to be kind of like molding clay. Every day is going to bring a different challenge especially with Frankie Sullivan, an experienced guard. I think he is a solid guard in this league. Beyond that, we don't have much experience left. It's starting over."

  • On Luke Cothran, the power forward signee who is expected to be very good:
``I think Luke brings us a different level of talent to this program than this program has seen in quite some time. He's one of those 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 hybrid forwards that can score from different angles from the perimeter and obviously the 3-point line. He's great around the basket because he's got great feet for a big man. He's got a knack for rebounding the ball, so there's no question he'll bring a lot to the team as a freshman."

  • On anything he's learned so far in terms of evaluating current players:
``Anytime you take over a new position, you go through a pretty long evaluation process and we're still in that phase with the limited amount of access that I've had to my returning players and to the incoming recruits. Anytime a new coach takes over, there's always transition. You've got to make sure it's a fit both ways, for the player and for myself and my staff and for my system and how we are going to do things. I'm pretty pleased with how the current team is shaping up with the returners from last year's team and with the signees that we were able to put together here in the late spring signing period."

  • On Frankie Sullivan:
``Frankie is a kid that I have known for a long time. He used to come to our camps when I was at Memphis as an assistant there, so I've known him for a long time. He's one of those guys that you want your entire team to play like, with reckless abandon. He's not going to back down no matter who he plays against. That's what Frankie brings to the court and, hopefully, he's going to step up in a leadership role now. He's one of the veterans that we have on this team. Frankie brings you a guy who can put points on the board. With the type of offense I'd like to run here depending on the personnel we have based around the dribble-drive and attacking the paint, whether it's on the drive or the post-up, I think Frankie will be able to be very productive in this offense."

Hi Jay, we're missing you, but doing our best to keep it going without any real football news. But it is getting closer.

I am pretty excited about seeing what Barbee can do. It should be interesting to see the basketball team move around on offense. I always considered that a key.

Braves score 2, just 1 out. Some good base running and a little luck.

8:25 PM
Blogger Norm said...

cincy - for a moment I thought you were nuts. As I watch, it's 0-0 with two outs in the top of the 7th. Then I remembered that I'm watching it delayed since I did yardwork tonight.

Oh, Norm, I 'm sorry. I wouldn't have posted that if I had known. I hate spoiling things.

Heck, it's not as if it's the post-season or anything. Had it been a real important game, I'd have announced I was watching on a delay. No worries.

8:43 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I have a comment about ESPN - Comcast recently added ESPN 3D to my lineup but as best as I can tell, they've only shown a few soccer games in 3D. Not that it really matters to me since I don't have a 3D set. Therein ends my ESPN comment.

8:47 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I don't mean to sound like a buggy-whip enthusiast circa 1901, but 3D television doesn't sound like a great idea.

I don't want to wear those glasses. Period.

8:49 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

3D is a fad that I hope passes quickly. I don't like it.

Comcast needs to get with the program and get me Comedy Central in HD. It's on the listings, but is not coming through the line yet. I got to experience Futurama in surround sound and HD via Into the Wild Green Yonder on Blu-Ray, and would like that same satisfaction with season 6 as it is aired.

8:50 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I don't really see 3D taking that great a hold but what do I know. I have Comedy Central in HD with my Comcast. I don't understand how they roll it out. A coworker who lives around 10 miles from me has probably 10 less HD channels than I do and we both have Comcast.

8:53 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

DISH Network has a lot of HD.

I turn my nose up at stuff that's SD now. Yuck.

8:59 PM

At a quick glance, if I had all the Premium Channels, I'd have 116 HD Channels through my Comcast. I refuse to watch the standard channels but I'll record some stuff for F4* off of them so they don't chew up my DVR space.

To steal a phrase from PF....3D TV is gay.

Sullivan will be really good in Barbee's offense. Mark it down. Sullivan is a ball player and he can score.

9:00 PM
Blogger Jet said...

The dribble-drive was made for Speed Reed.

9:05 PM
Blogger Honey said...

Braves game over, but I won't tell you who won.

9:09 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I'm no longer delayed on the game. I know who won. But thanks for the consideration.

9:12 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Reed was too inconsistent and a poor free throw shooter. Sullivan on the other hand will thrive. He has a great ability to to get to the rim. If they try to close that off he will find the open shooter and if they foul him well he was one of the best in the SEC if not country last year.

9:14 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Bedtime for Norm. Peace, I'm outta here.

9:16 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I am hopeful for Frankie, but I'm with Jay Gizzle on this one ... he's gonna have to show me.

9:26 PM

Count me as not being sold on Sullivan on anything but a role player. Contrary to what some believe he will not be the next big thing. Basketball will be rebuilding minimum 3yrs.

9:32 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'll bite. I think Frankie could be special in the right setup. When I say special, I don't quite mean soaring the heights of the two Chuck's, but I think he could be an All-SEC calibre (okay, maybe not first team, but second team, etc.) player.

Defensive Breakdown
DL - Bammer lost all their starters here, but this is where they are the deepest at should be a real strength for the darkside. Dareus is the truth and will be a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft barring injury. Our beloved Tigers have something up front we didn't have last year - DEPTH! We can play up to 6 DT's throughout the game and a couple of newcomers, Lemonier and Bonomolo, will be in the rotation before the end of August! We lost Coleman but we won't feel that at all. I'm so excited about this unit and believe they aren't getting the national respect they deserve. Edge Bammer

LB - The turds have talent oozing at this position and will be a strong point of their team by mid year. The Auburn LB's should be the team's most improved unit. Bynes and Stephens are All SEC guys but would never get voted because of the lack of media respect we get. Bates may move up or stay at safety. It doesn't matter because Holland, Owens, and White will all contribute. Holland and Owens will be freshamn All-Americans! Enjoy these guys now because they won't be around but 3 years. If Freeman can contribute the way he is capable then I believe this unit will be one the SEC's best. Too much talent here - Edge Auburn

DB's - Bammers lost everybody except Barron. Kirkpatrick is highly thought of but lacks physicallity and the other corner spot is being filled by 5* bust Scott or freshman. Safety for them will be Barron and someone else who will probally be a Woodall clone. Our secondary could go 1 of 2 ways if everyone returns healthy could become a real solid unit. Time for Neiko to step up and become an allsec caliber player. The safety position I am quite positive will be in good hands just need the corners to step up. Edge here Turds(Sabear is as good as it gets w DB's)

Eddie ..linky no worky.

THat's great that Dooley ranked us as the third best program in the SEC. I think we're more like 4th or 5th with UGA and LSU still above us. The good news is that UGA and LSU are gradually slipping and we're moving upward. If these trends continue, we could easily be 3rd in a year or 2. UAT and UF have a lot of substance in their programs, so moving over them will take a few more years.

Now if Urban will go on a permanent leave of absence and $atan will take the money and go live full time at Lake Burton, then we will be at our rightful #1 spot much quicker.

Just call me Pollyanna....

Don't know about now, but back in the day the Alabama dove season typically started the Saturday of Labor day weekend. We shot dove and listened to AU football on a radio. Showgirls was probably a pretty bad career move on Jessie's part. It will make for more than a few awkward moments on the reunion show in a few years. "So Jessie, what did you do after you graduated??!"

Yes, I realize I'm crossing over between a TV show and her movie role. I just don't care. Reality, schmeality.

Quit speaking Mexican.

I never watched that show, but I do appreciate the fine talents displayed.

Did ya see what I did there, pretty clever huh? I'm sure that's never been done before either.

Question: If I thought Kelly Kapowski was hot when I was 8-12 years old, and she was a teenager, what am I allowed to feel when I look at a picture of her as a teenager now that I am old and have kids of my own?

2:54 PM
Blogger Norm said...

MJT - you bottle those feelings up and push them deep down inside where all feelings belong. Never to be let out.

Jet's 2:52 post is what I get for hanging around HABOTN throughout the day. Time to leave before I hear something I don't on Spain-Portugal.

Luego caliente unos.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

E-bro, it was just a reference to the girl from the pictures.

3:02 PM
Blogger michael said...

I mean, my first love, Stephanie Tanner, isn't even an issue because she is so young. But Kelly was probably around 18. So you know, we are entering a gray area here. Just saying.

3:05 PM
Blogger michael said...

Not that I'm saying. Just saying.

EBro ... when you find out how they did, let me know ... I just saw a photo.

3:08 PM
Blogger michael said...

What is all this foreign langauge business on the HABOTN?

Oooka booka looka. See, I can do it too.

3:10 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Michael, I hope there was a hop in there. Without the hop, that means something completely different and quite unpleasant.

3:12 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

I was about to say Michael likely just insulted about 3 million people and doesn't even know it. You must ALWAYS include the hop after booka. Otherwise, it's trouble.

3:19 PM
Blogger michael said...

You guys know what I meant. No hop intended.

Put that in your pooblah and jinko it.

We would all be better off if the world would just adopt a single language. I suggest that language be limited to words appearing in Grand Funk Railroad tunes. The world would be a better place.

For those of you who may have missed it, Robert Byrd passed away. I believe he was the longest serving Senator. The guy had been around forever.

Grand Funk Railroad says
"Come on, take me, take me, and make me feel your music". We can all learn from that.

JaSteve, you are a funny man. Thanks for the smiles. And the awful lyrics that are stuck in my head!!

Bwahahaha!!! Some kind of wonderful is a great song. I suppose I could switch the Chuck Berry lyrics. I could do Neil Diamond, but I don't admit to listening to him.

The stock market plunged over 260 points today. Does anyone know why it is Nick Saben's fault?

GFR is annoying.

4:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

PF, that just means you haven't listened to enough Grand Funk Railroad. Listen to "I'm Your Captain" for 10 straight hours and call me in the morning. It should clear up the problem. Kids these days have no soul.

4:34 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I sold my soul to the robot devil. I needed the cash, and saw no need for it.

Listening to some Badfinger is another alternative, although I think half the members of that band ended up committing suicide, so maybe not.

I prefer "21st Century Schizoid Man" by April Wine. I've always liked that title.

Norm, that I can handle...Nice.

Or, "If You See Kaye" also by April Wine.

I counter with GFR doing Gimme Shelter!!! Can't beat it.

Blogger Unknown said...

Don't make me go all Al Jolson on you!!!

4:55 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

You're too one dimensional

4:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Al Jolson and Grand Funk Railroad are far from the same dimension. I just acknowledge that the music died sometime in the early 90s. There has been no music in the 21st century. I may rock me some Al Green later.

4:58 PM
Blogger Jet said...

"If You See Kay" reminds me of a classmate of ours, Norm, who absolutely sent our senior English teacher into orbit regarding that song.

4:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The Harmonicats was yesterday, but I might have to bring it back.

4:59 PM
Blogger Norm said...

You go Jolson and GFR all you want. I'll stick with my combination of groups and artists on my iPod. They all speak English quite well.

5:01 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Just listened to an old fave on the iPod ... "Who's Behind the Door?" by Zebra. Now checking in on "All Day and All of the Night" by The Kinks.

5:02 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Jet - my first guess would be one of the transient Air Force brats R.H. Am I close?

5:02 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jamming Chuck Berry at the moment, although Sweet Little 16 might get you arrested these days.

5:03 PM
Blogger Jet said...

It was the same young man who ran out with the team at the baseball pep rally with the "I Suck!" sign.

Initials: D.S.

5:03 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Ah yes. We did have some characters. I don't recall the incident regarding the song but my imagination can do wonders just knowing the parties involved.

Hahahaha, well, an "I Suck" sign does show initiative.
