Tony Barbee speaks

Hey everyone. It's been a while, but I promise that I've been working.

GannettWorldCup.com has been rollin' along with the little soccer tournament in Africa. Thanks to E-Bro, Eddie, Peter, Scott Chocolate, ehyou and Jimmy for hanging out over there.

So what do we have here today?

Your new men's basketball coach, Tony Barbee, participated in the SEC's summer teleconference. We didn't learn a lot per se, but he spoke. And we listened.

  • On the team's situation heading into Barbee's first season:
``We're starting over having lost 80 percent of our scoring and 80 percent of our rebounding. The majority of our team being either freshmen or sophomores and only two returning juniors and only really one of those played in Frankie Sullivan. We're starting over, but it's exciting to start over in that way because you get the chance to mold a younger group of players who haven't been set in their ways having gone through a system for several years. It's going to be kind of like molding clay. Every day is going to bring a different challenge especially with Frankie Sullivan, an experienced guard. I think he is a solid guard in this league. Beyond that, we don't have much experience left. It's starting over."

  • On Luke Cothran, the power forward signee who is expected to be very good:
``I think Luke brings us a different level of talent to this program than this program has seen in quite some time. He's one of those 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 hybrid forwards that can score from different angles from the perimeter and obviously the 3-point line. He's great around the basket because he's got great feet for a big man. He's got a knack for rebounding the ball, so there's no question he'll bring a lot to the team as a freshman."

  • On anything he's learned so far in terms of evaluating current players:
``Anytime you take over a new position, you go through a pretty long evaluation process and we're still in that phase with the limited amount of access that I've had to my returning players and to the incoming recruits. Anytime a new coach takes over, there's always transition. You've got to make sure it's a fit both ways, for the player and for myself and my staff and for my system and how we are going to do things. I'm pretty pleased with how the current team is shaping up with the returners from last year's team and with the signees that we were able to put together here in the late spring signing period."

  • On Frankie Sullivan:
``Frankie is a kid that I have known for a long time. He used to come to our camps when I was at Memphis as an assistant there, so I've known him for a long time. He's one of those guys that you want your entire team to play like, with reckless abandon. He's not going to back down no matter who he plays against. That's what Frankie brings to the court and, hopefully, he's going to step up in a leadership role now. He's one of the veterans that we have on this team. Frankie brings you a guy who can put points on the board. With the type of offense I'd like to run here depending on the personnel we have based around the dribble-drive and attacking the paint, whether it's on the drive or the post-up, I think Frankie will be able to be very productive in this offense."

I thought you never lost?

5:34 PM

Technically I haven't because I have never sold anything for less than I bought it for, but at the moment a lot of stuff is in the hole. I blame Nick Saban.

never? I call BS...either that, or you've got a lot of worthless stuff in your portfolio.

I'm Your Captain is a great song. It's the Grand Funk song in my iTunes. I think I got it via Amazon because iTunes has it only as part of a whole album.

Far from it. US Steel, Verizon, Ford, Hewlett Packard, and Altria are a few names you may have heard of. The are others that are less high profile such as First Energy.

5:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And I do have some Lehman Brothers that I bought after they filed Chapter 11. I made quite a bit off of selling them, but bought back and am positive overall for them at the moment.

5:44 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Dude, just dropping some names of big companies doesn't mean there's no junk mixed in with them. That's funny.

5:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't consider any of it junk. Those are some of the names I have. None of it has become worthless, although at the moment I am about 20k down from my peek.

5:48 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Forgive me if I don't believe you that you have never sold anything for a loss or don't possess worthless certificates. You realize how outlandish that claim is, right?

5:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is the truth, whether you choose to believe it or not. I am considering selling the Lehman Brothers for less than I bought it for, but I have no need to at the moment. I just ride the wave. The stock market has generally been going up sense I started investing, so you make no sense.

5:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And there is nothing outlandish about it. Not selling things that have lost value isn't that hard unless you are strapped for cash.

5:54 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I didn't realize you have only been at this for a short period of time and refuse to realize sunk costs. It makes sense now, I guess.

5:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Maybe. I like the stocks I have chosen and I tend to diversify, possibly too much. I have around 12 different stock holdings. Some do better than others. At the moment everything seems to be down and it has been for over a month.

As for selling when something is down, that is just if you bought into something that didn't have the assets to back up the price, which is why I bought into Lehman in bankruptcy. I knew I could catch a wave and make some cash. I did, but then the waves stopped.

Over the last couple of months the stock market has been having a lot of troubles, but I ride them out. If the current prices are undervalued, it is the time to buy, not sell.

Blogger Unknown said...

And many times it is the people that realize "sunk costs" that I make money from.

6:04 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Yeah, there will come a point where it is prudent to recognize those. You're smart enough to know that. I really thought we were talking decades and a large portfolio, not a few years and a dozen holdings. Sorry.

6:07 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

No problem. And a couple of years is the time frame. Before then, I did pretend investing to get a feel for it.

There are also things such as high dividend stocks that I have which don't change value much at all. You just kind of set on them and get your 6-9%.

And of course there are bond and mutual funds. As for CDs, I have one and am very unlikely to get another any time soon.

6:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for large portfolio, I actually consider mine too large at the moment. A dozen stocks is a lot to keep up with and I find it hard to keep up with him. I hope to get it down to 6 or 7 win the market improves.

Of course, I am only talking about the stocks I play with. I have good enough sense not to play with my retirement money. I let the big boys handle that.

Bloomberg is reporting that Verizon will begin selling iPhones in a year...then again, they aren't the first reputable news source to report such things. AP did it before the 3Gs release, I think, with no specified time period.

6:33 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Larry King is retiring!!!!

6:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wow, I had no clue King would be retiring. That is huge.

As for Verizon, I have read they would have the iPhone by the end of the year and Sprint would get it some time next year, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I have read conflicting reports. I have also read that the iPhone was coming to Verizon many times before.

6:44 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Bloomberg says January...I do expect Sprint to be close behind when Verizon gets it, because the networks are nearly identical tech wise, so few changes to the phone would have to be made.

6:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Here is a story on Larry King. I find it incredible he has been doing that show for 25 years. I remember when it started and wondering who the heck was Larry King. Geeze, I am getting old.

6:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am not sure what to think of Sprint. I use to follow them closely and made some money riding the ups and downs, but they seem to have been doing better this year. I am not sure why. The Palm Pre turned out to be not so big of deal. The Android family of phones kind of swept it aside, not to mention I read the Pre wasn't that rugged. I do like that Sprint has been deploying a 4G network.

We'll see how they actually deploy. From what I understand, all the 4G they have so far is from their takeover of Clearwire.

Yeah, the Pre was a great idea that had some problems. By the time they got them fixed, Android had taken over as the best OS.

After a solid first season for Coach Chiz and company it is time for a special 2010 season. The feelings I get when I hear about the team's work ethic and the togetherness they have together make me believe we are headed for another 2004 type season. Chiz's first season was better than Saban's and that scares the bams to death. Recruiting domination and a great coaching staff will make Auburn a national title contender sooner not later (maybe even this year!). Here we go guys and gals:
Arkansas St - This team was supposed to be improved last year but struggled and went 4-8. They played Iowa close but we ain't Iowa. AUBURN 58-10

Mississippi St - This is a Thursday night game and the Bulldogs want revenge from last year's beatdown. They will be fired up but Cam and company will come out and light the scoreboard up. The defense will show how much it has improved in this one. AUBURN 49-14

Clemson - This could be tough if their QB doesn't play baseball but either way they can't score enough to hang with Malzhaun. AUBURN 38-12

South Carolina - The Cocks are supposed to contend for the East. Garcia will pose a challenge but their offense has struggled against good SEC defenses. You can bet they will struggle against a great unit like Auburn's. AUBURN 27-6

LA Monroe - Why break this garbage down? We're not the bammers. We don't lose games to teams like this. AUBURN 54-10

@ Kentucky - Revenge stretch for the Tigers begins in Lexington. Todd was awful last year against UK. Cam will never play that bad. Joker will be outmatched big time in this one. AUBURN 38-14

Arkansas - This is the toughest game on the schedule. I'm sure the SEC will try to make us the 11:30 game so the home field won't be a factor. They will be able to score with a great QB and a very good offensive staff. But they can't stop what will be considered at this point in the season the nation's best offense. It will be close but the Hogs can't keep up. AUBURN 38-24

LSU - Lack of depth started to show when we went to Baton Rouge last year. They caught us at the best time. They were lucky to win the way they did but we will be out for revenge. The difference in this one is QB play. AUBURN 27-17

@ Ole Miss - The Rebels lost almost every major playmaker. That is huge when you play an explosive offense. Last year was a beatdown and I expect much of the same. AUBURN 38-7

Chattanooga - This team got blown out 45-0 by a mediocre Alabama offense. This trip to the state of Alabama will be worse. AUBURN 70-0

Georgia - We blew this one last year! The teams are moving in different directions. Uga is making coaching changes while other schools want the coaches at Auburn. It will a fun day at JH. AUBURN 31-17

Alabama - I find it hard to see a loss on our schedule. Playing Kentucky, Arkansas, and LSU in consecutive weeks may be a problem but we are better than those teams. THIS I CAN PROMISE!- We won't lose in turd town. The Auburn family can't stand for another loss to the bammers. We are the better program and IMO the better overall staff. They will have 3-4 losses at this point and they will finally start to turn on Sabear after we beat them! Good times!!! AUBURN 34-20

SEC Championship - Florida - The difference between Chiz's second year and Saban's is we will beat Florida and get a chance in the national championship game. AUBURN 27-20

There it is boys and girls. The undefeated season without the luck of the bammers that was needed for them to do it last year. Complete domination and a chance at the national title is what I expect. I hope the rest of you are with me. WDE!!!

PF - In reply ot your 8:59 pm post, you can read up online about it, but NASA had to do a huge contractor layoff to come up with money for contract cancellation liability. It is all compicated, but the bottom line is that thanks to Obama and company's power play to try to force the cancellation of Constellation, a ton of people are out of a job.

General Electric is betting a bunch on solar energy and they invested heavily in Obama's campaign. The NASA money will now go to buy solar power engineers at the expense of rocket scientist.

Solar power has been around forever. Will a plethora of government funded solar engineers really be able to develop revolutionary new systems? If they do, reckon GE will get the new contracts? They already have a lot of them.

I don't have a dog in this hunt, but just smell government waste caused by changing political winds. Spending billions to abandon one large program and then spending billions more to try and force a floundering program into success and giving the profits to a private company.

The campaign promise that we should develop renewable resources seemed so noble. Putting that promise into action hasn't been noble.

PF, that's a great point. I try to put myself in their shoes (after all, it's been a while since my team won a national championship outside of the pool).

As long as they don't project their current baseball success onto the football team, I guess I can let it slide.

I must just be cranky today since I stayed up too late watching baseball.

Based upon Weeman's prediction I say we set a new precedent and just claim the 2010 national title now. Sound crazy? Well, if Bama can claim multiple titles retroactively decades after the seasons, why not be forward thinking and start claiming titles in the future? We could have more than 13 national titles before the season kicks off.

11:52 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- Bama did that last season as well...looking forward. They got the market cornered every which way.

11:54 AM

I will stick with my 9 win prediction for this season. The defense will certainly be improved. How much, I am not sure. The offense may or may not improve. Replacing a senior QB and TB isn't easy, even if the replacements have a lot of potential. Actually, the biggest improvement we may see on offense is the receivers. We have several guys that underachieved at receiver last season that may break out, not to mention some incoming freshman that could have an immediate impact.

I think AU will do well this year, but I do nto think we are loaded at all positions. I especially do not care how we stack up against UA. They had AU outmanned last year and AU was only @ 2 minutes away from spoiling their fun. UTenn was just a FG away from it. scoreboard is all that matters in the end. They won them all and there is no quick comeback or remark to take them down from that. Give them the kudos and work for the next season, which AU certainly is doing.

PF ..that new development happened at a college research facility and was probably done on a small scale and at a reasonable cost. It is another in a line of slow, steady baby steps in that technology. The rhetoric I heard during the presidential campaign was that we needed to solve the renewable energy problems with the "resolve" that was used to develop the atomic bomb or go to the moon. That amount of "resolve" can only be attained by a large government entity or the government funding large corporations.

I think that if there were major breakthroughs possible for solar(or other renewable energy) we would have already seen them. There is a huge possible economic upside for any business that can develop a revolutionary solution and if the solution was quickly possible, we would already have it. Initial atomic research and going to the moon needed to be government funded because at the time there wasn't enough economic upside for the business sector to be serious about research.

An efficient, clean, renewable solution to the world's energy needs could solve a lot of economic and political issues around the world. I don't think that spending those kind of development costs on something that has already had billions spent in research since the mid-70's is going to produce a magic answer. Anything less than a magic answer will not solve the world's problem. Anything less ...will just be more baby steps at a much greater expense.

Kathy, on Bonomolo, he supposedly took classes at 2 community colleges to qualify, so I guess that's going to delay things (because now they have to make 2 whole phone calls instead of just one to get his transcripts). Plus I believe the clearinghouse is still fond of utilizing the Pony Express. Rivals said they expect him to be there. No ETA given. Given the historical performance of the clearinghouse, I would expect him on campus by late October of 2012.

Hopefully the government will do some of the things that will allow us to become more energy independent, like making energy efficient light bulbs required. If everyone bought them, they wouldn't be nearly as expensive. I have some track light bulbs that cost $30 a piece. They are led lights and extremely energy efficient.

Other obvious things are reducing traffic through things like 4 day work weeks, staggering working hours, and more telecommuting.

There are lots of obvious improvements that can be made.

I guess one of the good things to come of out the $780 billion stimulus bill was that they devoted a significant amount of $ specifically for renewable development. You wouldn't believe the # of firms foaming at the mouth for that $. The renewables business is still young, but it's booming.
