Morris, Fletcher earn high praise

Hey everyone. Hunter Morris and Brian Fletcher, a pair of young men who play baseball at Auburn University, were named to the All-America team today.

A deserving achievement, if you ask me.

You didn't. But if you had ...

Morris, a first baseman, was named to the first team. Fletcher, an outfielder, is part of the second team.

Morris was the Southeastern Conference's Player of the Year after leading the league in homers, RBI, slugging percentage and total bases. Not too shabby. He was a fourth-round selection of the Milwaukee Brewers last week.

(It's pronounced "mill-e-wah-kay," which is Algonquin for "the good land.")

His final line looked a little something like this: .386-23-76.

Fletcher went .357-22-75. He was an 18th-round pick of the Kansas City Royals.

Looking forward to football predictions:
If the QB lives up to expectation and barring injuries on the Defense, I can see AU being 10-1 or 11-0 headed to UAt next season. Realistically look at the schedule and see where they will not be favored in any of the 1st 11 games.
I am not saying there will not be some hard games, but I can respectfully say that AU can be at 10 wins or better by that game.

Go ahead and post your replies. Let me know what you think.

Shame that those picks are the 4th round and the 18th round, despite them both being all-americans.

Very odd how things translate/don't to the professional levels in all sports.

wtc, I say spot on. We return so many key starters and have some added depth help on defense. Our offense will be even more potent; all the players are familiar with the system by now.

I'll say the SECW comes down to the iron bowl, and the winner takes the momentum to the SEC and potential national championship games.

6:53 PM
Blogger wtc said...

AU averaged 33 points per game last year. Not sure they can go much higher, but I think the defense, by virtue of better depth, can hold teams to less then last years average of 28 per game.

The experience for the players was valuable last year. It hurt, a lot, but will certainly pay off this fall.

I see 3 or 4 games that are potential stumbles before the Iron Bowl. 11-0 is possible but I think 9-2 is more likely.

wtc, i will hold you personally responsible for all my disappointments if we are not at least 10-1 heading into the iron bowl due to your vast enthusiasm 80 days out (btw, happy marcel willis day).

however, if your enthusiasm carries us to that record then you will be treated to a lemonade of your choice at toomer's on me. so, you've got that going for you. ;)

or a limeade, if that is your pleasure. I admire your confidence, wtc. I hope Fannin and Dyer can fill Ben Tate's shoes. Heck, I hope Dyer turns out to be more along the lines of a Ronnie/Carnell mix...that would be even better. Then there's Cam. I don't have a clue what his stats are going to look like. And on defense, surely we can't be worse than last year's worst scoring defense ever at AU. Can we be good? I'm still concerned we don't have the run stuffers we need in the trenches. I'm expecting 8-4 in the regular season, with the 8th win coming on the day after T'giving.

Cincy,

My mother-n-law bought so many outfits before FAUWG was born, but she didn't get to wear half of the. She was 8lbs 12 oz and 21" long so she was born bigger than new born stuff.

WTC, I like the way you think. I think we may lose two before the walmartians. My prediction previously has been 10-2 with a victory in the Iron bowl.

8:07 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Remember I didn't say AU would not lose, I just they they can have a 10+ win season by that game.
Here is why I think that.

8:13 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Defense has more depth. Some players can get off the return teams and play defense only. Some defensive players will get longer breaks between series. I could not keep up with how many offensive series AU had last year where they ran 3 and out under 1 1/2 minutes. There were many under 1 minute. If that occurs this year, at least the defensive players will have depth to provide some relief.

A concern I had last year was the decisoins of Gus and Chizik. I don't know fo rsure, but I would say Chizik got a 14 point lead in the 3 games AU was that far ahead and he thought (as defensive guys before him did, Tubbs and Dye) that was enough to win. You knwo those two other coaches would do that every game if they were up by 14. I think GUs was asked to dial it down. He doesn't do that very well. I think that will not happen this year.

8:18 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Gus has not had a repeating QB since he has been in college football. He will not this year either. He does have a QB with more tools than the others he has had. Who among us thought Todd would set records at AU in 2009? Who thought he would be the QB? Gus can work a QB into his system. Cam is an unknown, but I have to believe that if Gus thought he saw a winner in Todd, he has seen a winner in Cam.

8:20 PM
Blogger Honey said...

Good thoughts, wtc. These make a lot of sense.

8:22 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Blogger wtc said...

RB may not be as good as last year, at the start of the year. Tate was a hoss. Best back in the state according to him, and he was very good. I am not sold on Fannin yet. He looks the part. Dyer looks the part also. I have mentioned he is not 18 years old. He will close to 20, or may already be there, by the time play begins. There is ahuge difference between an 18 year old and a 20 year old. When I was 18 there were plenty of 20 & 21 year old tight ends, fullbacks and running backs that jnew how to take advantage of an 18 year old freshman, on the field. Maturity does matter. he has it.

8:24 PM
Blogger wtc said...

IF (big if) AU improves on the reurn team, especially punts, they will be much better off. Look for Reed to be a big factor here. my goal is to have 0 fumbles and triple our 1/2 yard average from 2009.

8:26 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Several freshmen will have to contribute. But it is not like AU hauled in the #30 ranked class and will be counting on those freshmen to contribute. Look at prior classes for UAt, LSU, OK, UF, that were highly rated nand the team went on to win. Even after the 1st year of a highly rated class. You just have to have players and AU got players last year. They filled needs. With Dline kids that were redshirted that will play and a couple of incoming freshmen (Whittaker, Lemonier, Sanders, Bonomolo) that can spell the returners (I think Whittaker rotates with the 1st team early) you have to say they will be improved.
I didn't say dominate. I think they are a ways out from that, but able to stop others from scoring 28 per game is the goal here and they can do that.

8:31 PM
Blogger wtc said...

BTW-if AU gets the recruits they are after and I have heard are coming to AU, the secondary may be rated the #1 or #2 in the nation.

It is a bit early for predictions, but I will go for it.

Yes, I thought Todd would be the starter if he was healthy. I said as much after some comments Ben Tate made about him last summer. I must admit, I didn't expect him to do as well as he did and the prediction was more based on the alternatives than thinking Todd would be great. He was an average QB that had a great season due to the system.

Defensively, it is hard to not see us being improved. The secondary may be a bit of concern, but if the resurrected safeties work out, it should be pretty solid.

The special teams will have to be improved. Last season we had the worst special teams I can remember from an Auburn team. Yes, I know there were reasons, but it was bad.

As for offensively, that is a big question mark, mainly because we replace the starting QB and starting TB. Todd played smart. Tate was very solid and stayed amazingly healthy considering the beating he took. The concern here is that those positions have the unique ability to lose games with small mistakes. That is the concern, but the jury is out. Fannin has been probably criticized more than he deserves for fumbling. Newton is a question mark, although it is good he has JUCO experience. We will just have to wait and see how he handles SEC speed. The upside is we may have the best set of receivers we have ever had at Auburn, although some need experience.

My guess is 9-3. Less than 8 wins would be very disappointing. More than 10 wins would be incredible.

WTC ...

I concur that Auburn will be favored in perhaps every game (LSU) prior to the visit to the bowels of Sheol, where the worm does not die.

Pros: Experienced offensive line, playmakers at WR, solid placekicker, increased depth, particularly on special teams.

Cons: Questionable front 4 pressure on QB, LBs in pass coverage, experience in secondary.

The great unknowns: QB and RB. Both positions are potentially explosive. Today, they remain question marks that can become exclamation points.

9:22 PM
Blogger CHB said...

WTC, speaking of Mom what is she hearing about some pending commitments?

9:24 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't have a problem with Chiz slowing down the offense last year ... particularly with the lack of depth that our defense had.

As far as pacing, my preference would be to accelerate slowly. Get a first down or at least 3 plays on the defense before you hammer down. Once you are 5-6 plays into a drive, 100 mph is fine. Before that, you can expose your defense quickly if you're going 3 and out.

9:26 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Jet- Au did that a lot last year. 3 and out that is.

Jet - a progressively faster offensive tempo. Very interesting concept. I don't think I've ever seen something quite like you describe. The 2nd quarter of the TN game last year may be the closest implementation, and the was more of ' let's do it faster'.

It seems like for the past two years (with 2 separate coaching staffs), we've gotten out to good starts in games, but can't keep up the pace once a defense adjusts.

How many games have we lead at the half or even going into the 4th quarter that we couldn't hold on to in 08 & 09?

Offensively I can see two areas for significant improvement: Short yardage situtation and intermediate passes.

I believe we were near the bottom in the SEC in fourth down coversions last season. Hopefully Newton will help with that.

Todd did well with ball placement, but he wasn't a quarterback that could thread the needle. Hopefully Newton can provide some intermediate passes to the inside receivers and spread the ball around a bit more.

As for Auburn football, hate to pressure on the young man, but we'll go as far as Cam takes us. Everything else is in order to put us in a position to at least have a good chance in every game we play. I'm still being modest, though, and thinking more along the lines of 9-3 and 8-4.

A Thursday night spent in Starkville in early September should begin to tell the tale.

I like the optimism thinking that we could have 10+wins heading into the IB. I'm not as optimistic and agree with Jet prediction. Seems that for WTC's scenario to occur we would need to stay away from the wrong injuries, have several freshmen step up and for Cam to be as good as we all hope.

We are still not a deep team at several positions. Freshmen are unpredictable. I hear from folks that see practice, that Cam's fundamentals aren't as bad as his JUCO game films or the spring game would indicate. If Gus has indeed broken Cam's bad habits, then Cam could be special. I think that all of these items would need to work in our favor in order to have 10+ wins heading into the IB. We got lucky last year with injuries. Will we have enough luck for all of these issues to go our way this year? I wouldn't bet on it.

I've got a really dumb question. How do you add the photo to your post? (I'm technologically deficient). I took a picture of my toilet and wanted to add it to my posts. I paid $500 for the toilet, so I figured if I paid that much, I want people to see it. It supposedly is guaranteed to flush up to 25 golf balls per flush, which will come in handy as I've been thinking about pursuing an "all golf ball" diet.

I don't expect my toilet to have to flush bunches of golf balls. In my house; it may be called upon to flush Spiderman or Batman figures, Hot Wheels, toy boats or the like. Then sometimes, F4* puts stuff in there he shouldn't too.

2:12 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

Nope, wasn't kidding about the toilet. I spent too many hours with a plunger due to the "low flow" toilets that we had that my freaking 6 year old could stop up. I went to Home Depot and told them to give me the Cadillac of toilets. That plunger will never be needed again. Sometimes I just throw big stuff in the toilet and flush it just because I can.

CHB-running backs are not going as well as planned, IMO. I like the Coe kid. He is a hard nosed, bruising runner. He likes AU a lot also. AU has several other backs they are pursuing, but at this time AU is not the #1 choice for them (of those that are highly rated by the services).
When UF's #1 choice pledged to Clemson, thye had to go after their #2 guy, which was AU's #1 guy. He now has UF as #1. The longer he holds off announcing, the better for AU. His pledge will be along way off so a lot can happen until then. That is the only position that I can't get any strong information on.

2:16 PM
Blogger wtc said...

My optimism for this season does ride on Cam performing well and several freshmen stepping up and playing very well.

I will say that if Gus did not think Cam could do the job, he would not be on this team. By reviewing Gus's past, I conclude he can get the most out of a QB. He was the one that got Burns to move to another position. He knows QB's

2:19 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

"That is the only position that I can't get any strong information on."

wtc - what's the matter? Does mom have a head cold?

If Michael Dyer lives up to the hype, do you thik we'll have a lot of trouble signing a top back in '11?

2:19 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I am counting on these freshmen to play because they are a very talented group. If these guys were a #20 rated class, I would say many would be redshirted. That will not happen with this class. Many will play. They will play because they are very good, not because AU has no choice. That is my opinion.

Flushing 25 Golf Balls ...5# of tomatoes ...2# of pasta. Now I know what to get for X-mas. Not sure the city sewer department will appreciate the new sewer traffic tho.

2:22 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

Has anybody seen RB Mike Blakely in person? He seems to be getting a lot of hype from several AU sites I've seen and had AU at the top of the list (or did a week or so ago).

http://www.mtrmedia.com/auburn/2010/06/auburn-still-at-the-top-for-mike-blakely-but-hes-in-no-rush-to-make-a-decision-soon.html

2:24 PM
Blogger wtc said...

If Dyer lives up to the hype, Several backs will be taking a longer look at AU. I think a 2nd year of a rusher (Fannin or Dyer) going well over 1,000 yards in a 'spread offense' will help refute the things other coaches are saying now about AU's offense is not an offense that will help a back get into the league.

Blogger wtc said...

Baldy-he made a trip to UF last weekend and named them as his top team, for now. I think AU still has a very strong chance to get him. He has been AU's 'must have' back for a long time. He fits this offense better than most backs that are rated ahead of him.

2:29 PM
Blogger CHB said...

WTC ...clearly we have one of our best ever talented group of recruits coming in and the more talent ...the greater the chance of having some contribute with quality the first year. I'm still a wait and see type when it comes to freshmen.

In addition to the speed and strength of the game differences, there are all of the of the field life issues and diversions for these 18 year olds to handle.

After having said all that ...Darren Bates (2 star) seemed to handle it just fine.

Hoopie, it's money well spent, especially if you have ongoing toilet issues. Plus, it's quite a conversation piece at parties. Just be sure to hang onto your pants when you flush. It sucks anything in the bathroom down that isn't secured. You don't want to have to do the walk of shame covering your unmentionables as you go to the bedroom for a replacement pair of pants because the ones you were wearing got sucked into the sewer. It's hard to look cool in such instance.

So what you are saying baldy is that if a slightly larger person was to use that toilet a suction could be created and they would need to call the fire department?

2:38 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Baldy - no it isn't. It's really not hard to look cool in such an instance. Not for me at least. Jet couldn't pull it off though but he'd be sure to still have on his Zumba Dance Shoes so maybe that'd be something.

2:38 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

Ah, Wtc, didn't know that. Hopefully the fact Fannin will be graduating and now that Aycock is gone, some good ones will see the possibility of some early PT, and look AU's way. Chizik et al have obviously been doing a great job in that regard, so I think we'll be fine.

CH-B, there is such a warning regarding a larger person utilizing such a toilet, but if you have kids and the rescue squad did have to be called, kids do love fire fighters, so there's that.
