Tony Barbee speaks

Hey everyone. It's been a while, but I promise that I've been working.

GannettWorldCup.com has been rollin' along with the little soccer tournament in Africa. Thanks to E-Bro, Eddie, Peter, Scott Chocolate, ehyou and Jimmy for hanging out over there.

So what do we have here today?

Your new men's basketball coach, Tony Barbee, participated in the SEC's summer teleconference. We didn't learn a lot per se, but he spoke. And we listened.

  • On the team's situation heading into Barbee's first season:
``We're starting over having lost 80 percent of our scoring and 80 percent of our rebounding. The majority of our team being either freshmen or sophomores and only two returning juniors and only really one of those played in Frankie Sullivan. We're starting over, but it's exciting to start over in that way because you get the chance to mold a younger group of players who haven't been set in their ways having gone through a system for several years. It's going to be kind of like molding clay. Every day is going to bring a different challenge especially with Frankie Sullivan, an experienced guard. I think he is a solid guard in this league. Beyond that, we don't have much experience left. It's starting over."

  • On Luke Cothran, the power forward signee who is expected to be very good:
``I think Luke brings us a different level of talent to this program than this program has seen in quite some time. He's one of those 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 hybrid forwards that can score from different angles from the perimeter and obviously the 3-point line. He's great around the basket because he's got great feet for a big man. He's got a knack for rebounding the ball, so there's no question he'll bring a lot to the team as a freshman."

  • On anything he's learned so far in terms of evaluating current players:
``Anytime you take over a new position, you go through a pretty long evaluation process and we're still in that phase with the limited amount of access that I've had to my returning players and to the incoming recruits. Anytime a new coach takes over, there's always transition. You've got to make sure it's a fit both ways, for the player and for myself and my staff and for my system and how we are going to do things. I'm pretty pleased with how the current team is shaping up with the returners from last year's team and with the signees that we were able to put together here in the late spring signing period."

  • On Frankie Sullivan:
``Frankie is a kid that I have known for a long time. He used to come to our camps when I was at Memphis as an assistant there, so I've known him for a long time. He's one of those guys that you want your entire team to play like, with reckless abandon. He's not going to back down no matter who he plays against. That's what Frankie brings to the court and, hopefully, he's going to step up in a leadership role now. He's one of the veterans that we have on this team. Frankie brings you a guy who can put points on the board. With the type of offense I'd like to run here depending on the personnel we have based around the dribble-drive and attacking the paint, whether it's on the drive or the post-up, I think Frankie will be able to be very productive in this offense."

I bet Tiger gets a pre-nup next time.

Tiger's actions were so despicable and multiple that many spouses would never be able to forgive him. He did seem to go to extremes to correct his issues. Seems that she didn't wait around very long to see if she really "loved" him after he was rehabilitated.

There is a golddigger M-O wherein the marriage energy is purposely, slowly sqelched by the golddigger until the other party looks for fun elsewhere. The almost inevitable mistake opens the door for large settlements. Tiger did a lot of stuff before he was ever "caught". How could she not have known earlier? The more she lets him hang himself, the larger the settlement.

I'm not sayin' ....I'm just sayin'

I don't regret it for a moment, but if something should happen to Mr. Cincy and me (which seems an impossibility to me!) I would have a very hard time supporting myself in the manner to which I have become accustomed. I think she probably gave up quite a bit as a model to have children. I don't see anything wrong with her being supported in the lavish lifestyle he provided for her.

Escobar just needs to spend a few games on the bench IMO. He has talent, but it's not clicking right now, IMO.

8:30 AM

Escobar seems unable to put the bad plays he makes behind him. He made a bad play or two earlier the other night, and Chipper was obviously trying to address that with his supportive shove, trying to get Escobar to shake it off, but as you saw, the guy didn't respond to Chipper at all. He better develop that ability quickly as they need him and moping about a bad play won't help.

When Chipper Jones has to force a younger player to look him in the eyes when he's talking to him, then there is a problem.

Didn't realize the interview was from Monday. (It was indeed with Bill King.) I hope (or more aptly, Tubby better hope) that he does a better job recruiting (and actually getting them on campus) for them than he did in the last few years with AU.

If his moping is this obvious to us yahoos, SURELY the coaches are going to address it. I assume they don't have any options in the minors that they could possibly go to for a few games to maybe let him sit and ponder for a little while and get his head on straight. Looking at Chris Low's current blog post on SEC National Championships (in all sports recognized by the SEC), it's interesting how Arkansas, who has been part of the league less than 20 years, leads the count (they love their track and field there), and leads it rather handily.

I guess since the SEC doesn't officially have equestrian, they don't recognize our national championship in that. You know what else they don't recognize? Five of Alabama's 13 mythical championships. We're ahead of them in the current table. Huzzah!!

Since there's no football to discuss, I'll belabor a previous point.

Elin Woods was a grocery store cashier in Sweden that had a couple of obscure mag photos printed. Her "modeling" career was so weak that she became Jesper Parnevik's nanny and moved to America. Once in Orlando, many single golfers (including Tiger) asked to meet her. For the first year she reportedly rejected all offers because she didn't want to appear to be a golddigger. At 22 years old She finally relented and agreed to meet Tiger.

The only thing Elin gave up ....was the opportunity to meet-marry golfers other than Tiger.

The last straw for her was reportedly the commercial during the Masters with Tiger's Dad speaking. ....say what? That is a contrived reason to be mad. I started out on her side in this thing. Based on her actions, I think that there is as much likelihood that she used a golddigger M-O as not. Until folks start writing books, we'll never know the real deal. My guess is that for $750m, she won't be allowed to write a book. Nike/Tiger don't need the distraction whether such book were true or not.

With $750 mil, she doesn't need to write a book. But goldigger or not, Tiger is still the bad guy in all this. wasn't just his wife he betrayed, but his children.

Eddie ....UGA fans would much rather have Michael Adams get a DUI. Will the PC police demand his head? He didn't take the breathalizer, which will open the door for his attorney to manipulate the issue and work out a loophole. In Ga. they do stuff like change of venue and then claim out of jurisdiction ...no kidding.

12:43 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Jhag is still proud of Tiger.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Hoopie- I agree completely with the Adams statement. Heard the same from a friend who is a UGA Fan.

Interesting thing here...IF Evans gets convicted, I think it will be very tough for him to keep his job. IF Evans was to lose his job, and Adams put "His" guy in place, how solid would Richt's footing be?

Richt could be hurt by this DUI IMO if those things happen IMO.

12:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I started my first post saying Tiger did some despicable stuff and clearly his kids will suffer and his kids will hear that Tiger is to blame. Was Tiger manipulated into his actions? Her actions render her a suspect to some degree.

This M-O is more common than folks realize. Since athletes are now taught to watch out for it, has the M-O gotten more sophisticated?

12:48 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Hoopie, breathalizer or not, his mug shot says WAAAASSSSTTTEED. Whatever happens in court is unrelated to the PR mess from something like that.

I wonder what the passenger got arrested for.

12:48 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I see Evans taking a leave of absence, Vince stepping in temporarily, and Evans coming back from an extended rehab ready to get back to work.

12:50 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

It is never good for a public figure to get arrested for DUI or anything else. But many have and servived. All depends on how solid his footing is with the powers to be.

12:53 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Bama moved the Georgia State game...they can shut up the whining now.

12:53 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Peter- Completely agree about the mug shot and wondering about the passenger myself.

As far Dooley stepping in on interim basis, it would be the best thing IMO, but Adams hates Dooley and will not let that happen IMO.

12:53 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Adams also like his job.

12:56 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

digger- I think you can survive in a lot of positions, but I think it is really tough to survive when you are the leader of all athletic programs or the HC of a major athletic team. Evans has a chance of survival, but I say it's slim. The athletic department preaches to students to avoid this type of behavior and it's hard for the head man to be guilty of the same such behavior.

12:56 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Adams was a dirtbag whe Ga. hired him and he hasn't changed with time.

12:57 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Peter- Dawg fans wanted Adams gone when he forced Dooley to retire. Adams won that one and he will when the next one. The Board of Regents is not the same power structure that the Alabama Universities have. The academic success at UGA ensures Adams that he is pretty much safe in his job.

12:58 PM

Eddie I agree it is tough but if he is "in" with the right people they will find a way.

I'm glad that Bama felt it needed to move the GA State game to give them 2 extra days to prepare for Auburn. I mean, Bama could play all it's walkon's and beat Ga State. It's a sad state of affairs that bama is even playing them in the first place. This is GT / Cumberland all over again.

1:00 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

...Especially in a place like Athens, where drunk players is an even bigger problem than most colleges (not sure if there are more because of the bars, or just a police force that hates them, but it does seem like a bigger problem there). It's hard enough without the coach's boss setting a bad example.

I can't really criticize Bama for playing Georgia State when we play Arkansas State. Yea, Arkansas State is better, but they are still in the same patsy list.

Surely not all this money is going to the wife and children.

There is a law of nature that says the lawyers always get rich. I am sure Mrs. Tiger will get most of the money, but the lawyer won't exactly be on food stamps either.

Blogger digger4au said...

The law of nature may not state it but they get a big chunck.

1:07 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Peter- Agree completely. He's walking on some thin ice and all his moves need to be golden. It's been this way for several years now.

Steve- Arkansas State and Ga State aren't even close in comparisons. What is Ga State's past record? That should tell you why this is such a pathetic game opponent for any Major Div 1A school to play.

1:09 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Actually, divorce lawyers in both Florida and California (not sure where this ended up getting filed) cannot benefit from larger settlements like PI lawyers do. They can only charge their standard rate, which cannot be adjusted on a per case basis. The lawyers will do well, because they'll bill a ton of hours and probably have an outrageous hourly rate, but it will only be a small fraction of a single percentage point compared to the settlement.

I think Richt is going to be fine for a while at Georgia. The defensive changes they made should buy him some time.

I am looking forward to seeing what happens with Miles this season. Their offense was bad last year. That, coupled with some bonehead calls, could end up being the end of him.

What league will GSU be competing in in 2011. They're not even playing a complete schedule in 2010, right?

1:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, Arkansas State has upset some people, like Texas A&M I believe, but they are a big patsy. No, not as big of a patsy as Georgia State, but a patsy none the less.

I wish we would stop scheduling games like this. No good comes from it, other than financial, and these are career killer games for coaches if the team loses.

1:14 PM

Actually, the saddest part of playing Arkansas State is that there are chumps like me willing to pay to see it.

So, Georgia State starts with the NAIA(Shorter College) and ends with the reigning Div-Ia National Champion, with a couple of DIV II, Div-IA, and such thrown in? That's interesting.

Georgia State plays 11 games. Not sure of the conference.

Steve, if you made your argument using UTC instead of Ark State, it might help a little.

1:20 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

That should be I-AA...at any rate, Arkansas State is NOTHING like Georgia State. The only thing GSU has going for it is the Atlanta media and Bill Curry.

1:23 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Peter- I was thinking the same thing. They are all over the place on their schedule. I don't see a conference at this point. Bama is their big pay day. I'm wondering what the attendance will average at the Dome for their home games? I'm guessing 7,000.

1:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Does Ga State have a stadium on campus?

1:24 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Arkansas State had Iowa on the ropes last year and is at least Div 1. GA State is playing its first year of football. Not even close in comparison.

1:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

UTC is just as bad. Arkansas State will be terrible. They lost their play makers on offense and most of their offensive line if I remember correctly.

I put teams like Arkansas State, UTC, and Georgia State all in the same barrel. They are all teams that, if you lost to them, would likely seriously affect the head coaches future.

1:26 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Guessing GSU will play in the same conference as the rest of their sports (I-AA CAA) after this year...I'm only seeing 10 games on their schedule. Assuming they are taking the same approach as USA with a soft schedule year one.

1:28 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

GSU will play in the Ga Dome..."On campus" is really just a collection of buildings in downtown Atlanta, so they'll never have that. They have an athletics facility of sorts out 285 south of the city.

There are teams out there that we can play that won't require a return trip, like MTSU or Louisiana Tech. They have a much better track record than Arkansas State, even though Arkansas State has had a few good games the last couple of years. Heck, schedule Troy. They wouldn't require a return trip and it would have a lot of fan interest.

Except for Phil Mickelson, I don't root for or against any golfer. I used to golf lefty and shared a chance meeting for an hour or so with Phil one day in Az on a practice area. It helped my short game.

My sudden Tiger-Elin obsession is more of a sports life-social-legal trends analysis.

The GSU / SA should be a good game.

MTSU > Arkansas State? Maybe. Not enough to say so, though. They're in the same conference.

Scheduling Arkansas State and losing to them can get the head coach fired.

Scheduling Troy and losing to them gets the head coach AND the athletic director fired.

I wish we would play Troy and UAB. I know it's a lose-lose, but I think the big state schools should throw the other in state schools a bone. LSU doesn't back down from La. Tech, Tulana, etc.

UT plays Memphis (okay, it probably helps their recruiting there). Georgia will play Georgia Southern from time to time.

Eddie ..no prob, I didn't think that was necessarily directed at me. Your boss must be a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club. Most of those old coots/golf snobs hate anything other than Bobby Jones or JACK. They really hate Tiger, but won't just come out and say exactly why and get mad if you ask them why. It all started with Fuzzy tho.

Gotta go drive 6-7 hours to Hattiesburg, Ms. and take care of the aging in-laws over the 4th. They are both in their 80's and won't move from their maintenance nightmare, large abode on a lake. Paw-in-law knows who we are, but insists on having the same conversation repeatedly. Mother-in-law is good, just getting feeble.

Have a good 4th Hotties.
