Tony Barbee speaks
Hey everyone. It's been a while, but I promise that I've been working.
GannettWorldCup.com has been rollin' along with the little soccer tournament in Africa. Thanks to E-Bro, Eddie, Peter, Scott Chocolate, ehyou and Jimmy for hanging out over there.
So what do we have here today?
Your new men's basketball coach, Tony Barbee, participated in the SEC's summer teleconference. We didn't learn a lot per se, but he spoke. And we listened.

So what do we have here today?
Your new men's basketball coach, Tony Barbee, participated in the SEC's summer teleconference. We didn't learn a lot per se, but he spoke. And we listened.
- On the team's situation heading into Barbee's first season:
``We're starting over having lost 80 percent of our scoring and 80 percent of our rebounding. The majority of our team being either freshmen or sophomores and only two returning juniors and only really one of those played in Frankie Sullivan. We're starting over, but it's exciting to start over in that way because you get the chance to mold a younger group of players who haven't been set in their ways having gone through a system for several years. It's going to be kind of like molding clay. Every day is going to bring a different challenge especially with Frankie Sullivan, an experienced guard. I think he is a solid guard in this league. Beyond that, we don't have much experience left. It's starting over." - On Luke Cothran, the power forward signee who is expected to be very good:
``I think Luke brings us a different level of talent to this program than this program has seen in quite some time. He's one of those 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 hybrid forwards that can score from different angles from the perimeter and obviously the 3-point line. He's great around the basket because he's got great feet for a big man. He's got a knack for rebounding the ball, so there's no question he'll bring a lot to the team as a freshman." - On anything he's learned so far in terms of evaluating current players:
``Anytime you take over a new position, you go through a pretty long evaluation process and we're still in that phase with the limited amount of access that I've had to my returning players and to the incoming recruits. Anytime a new coach takes over, there's always transition. You've got to make sure it's a fit both ways, for the player and for myself and my staff and for my system and how we are going to do things. I'm pretty pleased with how the current team is shaping up with the returners from last year's team and with the signees that we were able to put together here in the late spring signing period." - On Frankie Sullivan:
``Frankie is a kid that I have known for a long time. He used to come to our camps when I was at Memphis as an assistant there, so I've known him for a long time. He's one of those guys that you want your entire team to play like, with reckless abandon. He's not going to back down no matter who he plays against. That's what Frankie brings to the court and, hopefully, he's going to step up in a leadership role now. He's one of the veterans that we have on this team. Frankie brings you a guy who can put points on the board. With the type of offense I'd like to run here depending on the personnel we have based around the dribble-drive and attacking the paint, whether it's on the drive or the post-up, I think Frankie will be able to be very productive in this offense."

Don't worry, guys, the village still has its idiot. But it's nice to welcome the official resident moron. Welcome, Norm.
Hoopie- Be safe in your travels. Bro and I had a Step-Grandfather who would ask what time it was and then about every 2 minutes ask again.
UTC doesn't even have Terrel Owens this time. Oh lawd.
Eric Hines Tucker's finest game unfortunately.
I feel like a Fred Talley joke is coming any second now...
Troy has a decent football program, better than MTSU. Yes, a loss to them would hurt bad, but I wouldn't fire a head coach or AD over either, although it wouldn't be politically correct in Alabama to play them.
The other team that we played that had me scratching my head was UT Martin.
Heck, why don't we play Memphis occasionally?
There are schools around that are decent games. I don't expect Arkansas State to be one of them. If we don't beat them by at least 4 touchdowns, I will be seriously concerned with this offense. Arkansas State was better last season, but they shouldn't be this season.
Also remember that Iowa had a strange kind of team last season. Their defense was solid, but their offense was very inconsistent.
Crap. Sorry for the Weemanish post.
Ricky Stanzi!
Steve,
As we all know what you would fire a head coach over and what others would fire someone over are pretty far apart.
A Ricky Stanzi reference on the blog.
I just don't thing Auburn should be playing FCS, aka 1-AA teams.
Of course that Georgia State game the cousin humpers are playing is the biggest joke of ALL TIME.
We should leave all Southern Conference teams off of our schedule.
I think it's worse that they made that team reschedule the game because of the BYE week fiasco.
Possibly so, RK. Or at least I am sure you feel the rest of the world holds your opinion.
The Cousin humpers are also cry babies.
I'm just glad that Auburn intimidated the cousin humpers into rescheduling that game.
I don't really think rescheduling Georgia State helps Bama at all. If anything else, it could hurt. That game will be no more than a glorified practice with Georgia State providing the tackling dummies.
simple economics, JaSteve.
Memphis has got all bigheaded and won't come to AU without an AU trip to Memphis. AU ain't going to Memphis. TN is going there, but AU won't. We will go to bigger places, like Clempson, LA, Morganton, Atlanta, but not Memphis.
Yes Steve, pointing out that you have a different opinion of what gets a coach fired than most is such a strong opinion of mine that I feel the whole entire wide world shares that same opinion.
Has anyone actually been to Memphis?
Yeah, when Memphis State decided to drop the State from their name, they became big time.
The cousin humpers are also scardy cats.
So I guess Troy is big time now as well!
I've been to Memphis. Beale Street is a pretty fun place to be, but don't go anywhere else for your own safety.
I have been to Memphis once. I learned what happens when a redneck gets a lot of money. I also spent about 5 minutes in Arkansas on that trip.
we'd better bring back Stephen Davis from that team first. no disrespect to EHT, though.
wow, my refresher didn't refresh. my post is so like 15 minutes ago now. oh, well.
You guys better not talk trash about my Memphis!
Steve - I have missed a turn and ended up in Arkansas before. A lot of cursing goes on on that bridge, I imagine.
isn't Memphis Michael's old stomping ground?
I've been there once and through there a couple of times.
If I ever get back to West TN, Memphis won't be my destination. I'll be heading to the tiny little town of Hall.
oops, it's Halls, not Hall (must be a bigger town than I thought).
Halls isn't West Tennessee, it's near Knoxville.
this Halls is very west TN.
Michael, that is exactly how I ended up in Arkansas.
During the re-alignment storm, I read an article saying that it was rumored a donar at Memphis was willing to throw around major bucks to get Memphis into a BCS conference, possibly the Big12-2 or the Big East. I never read about them being an SEC possibility and I don't think they are there yet. The do play Ole Miss close at times and have occasionally had good teams.
By the way, there are some that think the major re-alignment storm is yet to come, possibly to be triggered by Notre Dame.
Halls, TN on Google maps
There are occasionally times where you see the same name for two places in a state. Buckhead in Atlanta is one of them. There is also a city named Buckhead to the east of Atlanta.
Never been to that Halls before, nor have I heard of it.
However I have heard of Bucksnort, TN.
crazy. my little area of Knoxville i live in is Halls and i am definitely in EAST TN. i'll stay on this side.
but Scottie B, all the maps & globes are on the other side!
who is our Soddy Daisy 'noogan? Where did that name come from?
I worked on a project in Memphis for almost two years. Only had to call the cops 3 time. I wish we could sell it to the Russians.
this where i am:
scottie b's secret location
So as a former Tennessean I will weigh in and say Memphis sucks.
i've lived in knoxville going on 5 years now. never have i had a desire or need to visit or travel through memphis.
and i'm ok with that.
I have been in the Knoxville area a lot. It seems like a nice place to live, although I got backed up on I-40 for about an hour going through Knoxville one summer. My A/C was out. That was hell.
Has anyone on here spent any time in New Orleans?
yeah, that's not fun SFC. that happened to me coming back from a Sept. AU game one year. A/C died. not fun.
the knox area is a pretty place to live. you get a little bit of everything and it's not too big.
New Orleans is a grungy nasty place. I do not like it even one ittty bitty tiny bit.
come to think of it, there's really no place in Louisiana that makes me want to jump in the car and start driving. There's some good eatin' down there, but that ain't enough to make it attractive.
GO 'AINTS. well, nope. i was cheering for the Colts. crap.
As a current Tennessean, I won't say Memphis sucks, but I will say I feel no connection to is as a Tennessean. It's always seemed like it's a world away to me, as I'm sure East Tennessee does to Memphis residents.
I like New Orleans. Only been there twice, but I dug it both times.
Did y'all know there's a town in Tennessee called Crunk?
Yep.
I went to New Orleans for a very Auburn related event. I need a similar event to get me to return.
Of the Big 4 cities in TN, Memphis is a clear 4th.
i dig Cafe du Monde in N.O. i LOVE beignets!!!!!
Cafe du Monde was good, but I was not a fan of their pigeons.
yeah, pigeon poo & all the powdered sugar would be messy.
i've made the mix you can buy at the grocery a few times. they're delicious. not as pretty-looking but good.
oh, AND GREAT AUBURN NEWS!
my future bro-in-law (a spring '10 AU grad) just got a job as an assistant manager at the new AU Store at the Auburn Arena. very excited for him.
I have been watching Treme on HBO. It is a series located in post Katrina New Orleans. I find the culture and music interesting, but it is TV. I have only flown through New Orleans, which sums up my Louisiana experience.
never heard of it SFC. is it a reality-type show? real life?
Congrats to your future in-law, scottie.
Hoopie,
You're a good man, Charlie Brown.
Steve...I've been watching Treme as well (just finished the season last weekend), and I love it. Great show.
thanks. they're getting married next year but my sis has 2 more years of engineering school left. they needed him to find a job in auburn.
plus i still have an AU gear connection. he had been working at Anders. sweet!
I've been to NO a lot (15+ times). It's hard to beat for music and food, but you need to at least somewhat know what you're doing and how to get where you're going down there. If not, it's pretty easy to get into trouble. I would not want to live there, although I have a good AU friend who lives across the lake in Mandeville, and he likes it pretty well.

glad that post wasn't mine.
Cheerwine cream filled Krispy Kreme doughnuts must be selling like hotcakes. Can't find them in the local grocery stores (and they aren't being offered at the Krispy Kreme stores)
I'm going home to dinner of field peas, sweet corn, fried okra, green beans, and corn bread. Yes, I must be having dinner in heaven.
i wanna know how delicious those KK's are THT. literally....GET SOME!
scottie, Treme is a regular TV show, not reality. John Goodman is in it. The first few episodes were hard to follow, but had great music. It is getting much better. A lot of it centers around the damage caused by Katrina and the failure of the federal government to help out. Actually, Goodman's character blames the government for the destruction because of the failed levy.
oh, ok. thanks SFC. i haven't had HBO in a couple years now.
I believe Treme is directed by the same guy who did the Wire, on HBO. I never got into that series.
It is different than a lot of HBO/Showtime shows. They don't seem to make an effort to throw some boobs in every episode and the characters are mostly more likeable.
As for why the name Treme, it is apparently the name of an area of New Orleans. The show has a lot of Jazz musicians on it, including a visit by Dr. John. Elvis Costello also shows up in a few episodes.
If I ever get to New Orleans, it will be for the music and the food.
With Daddy JG on the road, can we get this bad boy to 1,000?
I bet we can.
I'm sure that there's another 100 wasted posts on Escobar.
Here's another topic for discussion: Larissa Riquelme.
Hot, but kinda trashy...like Jessie Spanno in Showgirls, if Jessie Spanno had been a 10.
New Futurama tonight.
never seen an episode of Futurama.
well, the Braves are off today. i think i said my peace on Escobar earlier so i'm all good there.
hhmmm....i'm going home to work on staining my deck. yippee!
I've got a fevah ... and the only prescription is ...
MORE ESCOBAR.
Showgirls was a great way to make a film career disappear. What a flop, even with the boobs.
SFC- late response, I know, but I'm actually from the NOLA area. I know a girl that hooked me up with sugar bowl festivities/tickets when spUAt played Utah. Met Saban while wearing my orange shirt, blue blazer, and orange and blue tie. I made sure everyone at that gala knew who I supported.
The food is second to none, if you ever go and want a really fancy dinner, eat at Gallatoire's. My parents get reservations there for New Years just about every year, and I've been a time or two. It's certainly pricey, but some of the best food in the quarter. Basically anything in the French Quarter is going to have amazing food.
For solid music choices, check out Frenchman St. later on at night. Snug Harbor is always a great time, and a lot of the other places will have good music from essentially unknown artists. Very weird crowd that hangs out down there, but the music experience makes it worth it. There's a famous taco stand that pops up near the park just off Frenchman. Great late night food at a great price.
Scott Choco- Mandeville is my home area. Where in the city is your friend?
Wow, THT family had the new cheerwine Krispy Kreme donuts, simply WOW. When THT had one he started doing an odd dance, at first we thought he was having a seizure, but turned out it was just because they were so awesome.
Wells, he lives on something like Chateau Loire Ct. I don't what neighborhood that is.
I strongly recommend every Hottie who is not currently in North Carolina to get in your car, boat, train, plain, or cycle and head to this great State, NOW!. Those Cheerwine Krispy Kreme donuts are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!
GOT SOME!!! 2.0 called 6 grocery stores and found the donuts in Hillsborough.
(it made a great hors d'oeurve prior to the fantabulous meal I'm about to have.)
Just had a great meal of vegtables and mac & cheese, first thing THT did afterword was have another donut :P
Saw where pres. Adams of Ga. is out of the country so no decision on Evan forthcoming. Also the lady he was with (not his wife which he has one of) is a 28 year old realator. She was arrested for disorderly conduct.
With the real estate market down, I don't doubt the woman in that mug shot has turned to stripping. Evans may have pulled off the double whammy, ruining his career and marriage in the same night.
When in NO, Dooky Chase is marvelous. Just try not to get robbed going in an out.
Rio Bravo on AMC. Sweet.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/stewart_mandel/06/29/mailbag/index.html?eref=sihp
Obviously its more than a bit premature for the "Cam for heisman" talk, but interesting to see this nonetheless. Everybody seems to be saying UF will win the east on the throwing arm of a qb that hasn't taken a meaningful snap either, so what the heck?!
I don't want to perish like a fading horse.
Read "all but one player in the class is already on campus and ready to go (and Joel Bonomolo is expected to be here by August)." Hope he makes it in August.
A few things:
Jet - I did have some game back in the '85 timeframe, thanks for the reminder.
Lunch at The Hamburger King today with Jet, wtc, Phred and some guy named j-z. Food and conversation excellent, I only wish Carmela had been there.
Seanzie - thanks for the official welcome.
Memphis, never been. New Orleans, several times. Should've stopped at once.
Escobar - let him ride the pine.
Tiger getting what he deserves. Ellin getting more than she deserves.
Rio Bravo is one of my favorite Duke movies.
Let me assure you if by some chance I was pulled over for DUI at 1:30 a.m. in a city other than the one in which I reside, accompanied by a woman other than Mrs. Jet, what my boss had to say would be of little consequence.
That's because our next conversation would be with me quite unresponsive, supinely resting in a pine box at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home and Cemetery, courtesy of Mrs. Jet.
Oh, the girl was "just a friend". Mrs. Jet would SURELY understand.
The guy is toast. No way he can survive this. MAYBE if it was "Just" the DUI, but add the philandering to it and the fact that he became a public spectacle, and he can kiss that cushy $500k/year job goodbye.
I'm still listening, Tony
