Getting Our Bearings

Hey everyone. So as you have surmised, I was asked (politely) to make Wednesday my last day of work at the Advertiser. Nobody should be upset with the Advertiser; they are keeping to their word and sending me on my way with what they agreed to give me. No hard feelings.

I am hopeful that Brian Woodham, who recently left a part-time gig with ITAT to take a full-time job as a copy editor at the Advertiser, will be given an opportunity to take my old job. Brian would be a great addition. I'll let you know if I hear anything about that.

As I explained on Facebook, we will have a board at AuburnSports.com with a stricter standard when it comes to cussing and any off-putting shenanigans. Personally, I'm good with the Bunker and have read it for a long time. They get a little upset when things don't go well, which is understandable, but I feel like that board's reputation for savage commentary far exceeds reality.

With that said, we will have a HABOTN-esque board over there for people whose tolerance for cussing is at zero. Just want to make that clear.

I'll be starting at AuburnSports.com on Monday.

Take care, errybody. Thanks as always for your support!

Oh, this is not where we need to be ... no question about it. Per Rivals:

2016 8th - 3rd in SEC/SECW
2015 7th - 4th in SEC/2nd SECW
2014 9th - 7th in SEC/4th SECW
2013 9th - 5th in SEC/3rd SECW
2012 10th - 3rd in SEC/2nd SECW

What was that stat thrown around on Twitter the other day? The last half dozen national champions have had a top 5 class within 2 years of their natty.

I just went and checked that stat out. Spurious, I say. It doesn't work for 2010 nor would it have worked in 2013 (had we won the game we shoulda won).

At any rate, I'd feel a lot better if we were cracking the top 5 most years.

Hey, remember back at national signing day 2011, when Gene Chizik had as many national titles at Auburn as Nick Saban had at bama, and Auburn was bringing in a top 5 class, and it was clear to all that both bama and Auburn would be perennial top 5 contenders? That was a cool time.

4:56 PM
Blogger michael said...

That was a helpful link, bubbs. you know, in my mind earlier today, I was giving Nick Saban and his staff credit for developing players and stuff. Sure, they are always at the top of the recruiting heap, but I kind of felt like the separation between their program and everyone else was bigger than their separation in recruiting, if that makes sense. Like they not only recruit the best, but they also get the most out of them.

That table suggests to me that the talent gap is so big that even a well trained monkey could coach those players to natties. So now I am back to giving Saban zero coaching credit and saying he is just a really amazing recruiter.

Being a detectorist in Alabama probably isn't as cool as Europe, the Middle East, or even Mexico or South America. Alabama was in the Stone Age until the 1800s. I guess you can find some civil war bullets somewhere or something.

@MJT Keep this under your hat, but it's a little known fact that Alabama was one of the pre-Columbus landing sites by the Vikings. They made it a good way into the mainland at that. We dectorists keep it on the down low, but there are some nice finds to be had around these parts.

I feel like Cullman might be a little bammercentric even for a detectorist show. But I'll defer to Jimmy's knowledge on what he thinks would be best for the series.

12:25 PM

Another suggestion, Glenwood. I bet it's almost a ghost town. With all the iron ore that went through there during the last century, your detector should be singing, unless you ruin the show by using a VLF discriminator.

As always, our favorite writer just has no idea how English works:

"Auburn landed another top 10 recruiting class in 2016 but it's never too early to look ahead to what the Tigers will need next year."
Run-on sentence. You need a comma in there. He gets it wrong at least once in every article.

"Following the 2016 season, Auburn will lose 16 scholarship seniors, with a few juniors, including Carl Lawson, also likely to considering leaving early."
Carl Lawson sure is likely to considering leaving early.

"Having Franklin, a presumptive second-year starter, and White as his backup is a good foundation and Auburn has another true dual-threat quarterback on the roster, in Woody Barrett."
Another run on. I will buy him some commas if he needs some. This is embarrassing.

"Auburn could target backs out of both the JUCO and high school ranks in 2017 and already has four-star prospect Alaric Williams, a 6-foot, 195-pound athlete, committed but it's unclear what position he'll wind up at."
run-on, needs comma

"Only Jason Smith is scheduled to be a senior in 2018 so the Tigers will clearly be relying heavily on second and third-year players at that point."
Needs a comma. Also, Jason Smith won't be a senior in 2018. He'll be gone.

I think that's enough for now.

just heard about an auction coming up later this year. The family called some local auction company (with farm equipment on their web site) about a bunch of books. Turned out to be thousands of books crammed into cardboard boxes randomly, as many as would fit. One small 1672 book that will probably bring $100,000 or more was in a box with 20th century children's books. Another 1672 book probably worth $10,000-$15,000 was in a box with late 20th century how to practice buddhism books. The sellers are absurdly rich and were only interested in getting the books out of their parents house. That's not a lifestyle with which I'm familiar.

Penguins officially stink. I'm guessing their recent success has been against fellow bottom dwellers. Crosby doesn't even have a shot on goal through 2 periods. I'm going to bed.

Oh, btw, Jimmy, Penguins and Sabres on NBC on Sunday 21 Feb.

yes I would. I'd rather be waterboarded and subjected to anything else The Donald dreams up.

1) I ain't datin nobody's MIL and I don't care what the Twitter Machine has to say about it.
2) We do have lots of guns in the house and vehicles. And we did recently up my Life Insurance benefits. You may be onto something there.
3) I've been fortunate enough to have met 3/4 of the THT clan. So I've got that goin for me, which is nice.
4) This is the time of year I start to watch hockey sometimes. Then when the Playoffs and Finals happen, I'm pretty well tuned in to it. I have no team allegiance, who should be my team Doc?

bubbs, I don't generally do Netflix, though I made an exception for The Dectorists. The rest of the family does that.

Norm, is it safe to assume you want a winner? Go with the Blackhawks.

Hey, MJT. Has the water cooler talk been filled with gravitational waves the past few days? I bet some of your old NASA buddies are going nuts.

I actually haven't talked with anyone with regards to gravitational waves... I don't work NASA these days, and there is less gee-wiz isn't this neat sort of attitude here. Gravity waves have zero practical consequence for the engineer at this time, so it's more the science nerd reddit crowd that would follow the story. I mostly hang with practical doers (though I myself tend to be more in the science nerd crowd probably).

But I'm hanging with some old college chums at lunch today. They all do NASA type stuff. I'll report back if they bring it up.

10:20 AM
Blogger michael said...

A story to illustrate the engineering mindset: so my focus in grad school was orbital mechanics, which was all about dat gravity. The professor for all the orbital mechanics classes was smart and awesome and stuff, but one day I asked him, "What's the speed of gravity?" He looked at me like I was crazy. I was like, if the sun suddenly appeared, how long would it take for something X miles away to feel it's gravitational pull? I couldn't really get him to understand my question though. He was an engineer through and through, so that sort of question was kind of useless as far as he was concerned. He was just like, "This is what gravity does. What the heck are you asking?"

And I guess this gravity wave stuff now proves that it moves the speed of light (which is what the internet said 10 years ago, so maybe that was already proven... i dunno)

10:26 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Yeah, I remembered that you weren't NASA anymore. Figured you might have communications with those types still, though.

My understanding is that 1. Your question about the sun popping in/out of existence has been a common theoretical one. B. The speed of gravity has always been a theory to this point. (Did Albert assert the speed or just that waves existed? I dunno).

I'm fascinated by all this stuff, even though much of it is far above my head. And it often gets freaky re: relativity.

This guy is awesome:

http://www.gq.com/story/cleveland-teen-becomes-rec-league-legend

I too was a co-ed rec league soccer trouble maker in high school, though he definitely has outdone me. My list is much shorter and not as funny(though I'm particularly proud of the last one)

- after the goalie punted from the other team, the ball came to me. I made a fair catch signal and caught it (though I may have ripped this off of a friend of mine... can't remember who did it first)
- I took pictures while playing (with an old fashioned cheap film camera of course)
- We were losing about 6-0 in my last game senior year. I played defense. They had just passed the ball near our goal, our goalie was out of position, and a guy kicked it in the air toward our goal. It was about to go in, so I jumped over and snagged it with my hands to keep them from scoring a goal. I then ran with the ball to the fence and threw it over, and then I took my shirt off and started running around yelling. I was kicked out of the game... but then I went back in a few minutes later, and the ref didn't say anything, so I kept playing.

I LOVE snow. I'd love snow more if it waited until the BuyMore closes. I don't mind driving in it, but I hate wasting 20 minutes "de-snowing" the car so I can actually drive. The snow is piling up quickly out there.

8:01 PM
Blogger Norm said...

No snow here but baseball tryouts scheduled for tonight are likely to be impacted by rain. Maybe the rain will also dampen certain dumpster fires.

8:18 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Eh. I would say all this off season stuff with AU is circumstantial evidence of a dumpster fire. If Gus pulls a rabbit out of his hat and turns things around, all will be forgotten. He'll be an offensive genius once again.

Unfortunately, I tend to think a dumpster fire is the more likely scenario.

Hmm. Kodi back at AU.

Welp, that about wraps up Gus's tenure at Auburn.

KB might be able to coach what we got, but I have a hard time believing he's anywhere close to the recruiter that DC is.

Gus is circling wagons. He's surrounding himself with his proteges. I don't see how this ends well.

Yeah, it's a bummer man. I think it's bad for Gus in the long run. I don't think it affects the upcoming season, though.

I don't really buy the "DC is leaving the sinking ship" line of thinking. I think he was being marginalized, so he's gonna give it a go elsewhere.

Honestly, when I separate emotion from the equation, the Kodi Burns hire might be more troubling than the DC departure.

1:01 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

For sure. That's why my first post this morning was very "meh" in tone vs. my post on Kodi.

Losing DC hurts, but I don't know that it really says anything about the state of the program in and of itself. The Kodi hire does say something.
