Getting Our Bearings
I am hopeful that Brian Woodham, who recently left a part-time gig with ITAT to take a full-time job as a copy editor at the Advertiser, will be given an opportunity to take my old job. Brian would be a great addition. I'll let you know if I hear anything about that.
As I explained on Facebook, we will have a board at AuburnSports.com with a stricter standard when it comes to cussing and any off-putting shenanigans. Personally, I'm good with the Bunker and have read it for a long time. They get a little upset when things don't go well, which is understandable, but I feel like that board's reputation for savage commentary far exceeds reality.
With that said, we will have a HABOTN-esque board over there for people whose tolerance for cussing is at zero. Just want to make that clear.
I'll be starting at AuburnSports.com on Monday.
Take care, errybody. Thanks as always for your support!

What about Facebook? Did he put anything on Facebook? Because that would be like having two forms of identification. That's some official stuff right there.
Not sure... we're not facebook friends... yet.
Here's something you can facebook as you celebrate yet another top 10 recruiting finish: we just finished 4th place in the SEC West.
Among the endless list of things that annoy me, driving behind a Prius is usually pretty high on the list.
Tops on the list is missing a BEASLEY!!! post.

Oh, this is not where we need to be ... no question about it. Per Rivals:
2016 8th - 3rd in SEC/SECW
2015 7th - 4th in SEC/2nd SECW
2014 9th - 7th in SEC/4th SECW
2013 9th - 5th in SEC/3rd SECW
2012 10th - 3rd in SEC/2nd SECW
What was that stat thrown around on Twitter the other day? The last half dozen national champions have had a top 5 class within 2 years of their natty.
I just went and checked that stat out. Spurious, I say. It doesn't work for 2010 nor would it have worked in 2013 (had we won the game we shoulda won).
At any rate, I'd feel a lot better if we were cracking the top 5 most years.
Close call, THT. The BEASLEY!!! Fan Club still has you on probation.
Found this the other day and thought it was pretty neat/helpful: http://247sports.com/Season/2015-Football/CollegeTeamTalentComposite
Hey, remember back at national signing day 2011, when Gene Chizik had as many national titles at Auburn as Nick Saban had at bama, and Auburn was bringing in a top 5 class, and it was clear to all that both bama and Auburn would be perennial top 5 contenders? That was a cool time.
That was a helpful link, bubbs. you know, in my mind earlier today, I was giving Nick Saban and his staff credit for developing players and stuff. Sure, they are always at the top of the recruiting heap, but I kind of felt like the separation between their program and everyone else was bigger than their separation in recruiting, if that makes sense. Like they not only recruit the best, but they also get the most out of them.
That table suggests to me that the talent gap is so big that even a well trained monkey could coach those players to natties. So now I am back to giving Saban zero coaching credit and saying he is just a really amazing recruiter.
Interestingly, I do in fact know a Chad Simmons. You can find him among my followers/followed lists on the twitterverse. He lives here in college town.
So, how about this recruiting stuff huh? Amirite?
That was indeed a cool time, mjt. Sigh.
bubbs, I don't know what happened since you looked, but Rivals now shows for 2016
Auburn 9th - 4th in SEC/SECW
https://n.rivals.com/team_rankings/2016
I see Tubbs is doing his thing, getting 2 & 3 stars then coach em up
https://cincinnati.n.rivals.com/commitments/football
Only 363 days until NSD!
a little morning levity
I need to become a fan of a different sport ... Maybe Birmingham will get a hockey team again. I could really get into going to some hockey games.
You could be a Birmingham Hammer, their site says they are holding open tryouts. So you go that going for you too.
http://www.birminghamhammers.com/
yuck
Bubbs have you looked into your local detectorist society?
Two talents I wish I had:
1. play the piano like Billy Powell or Roy Bittan
2. metal detectorist
The few times I've tried the latter were complete fails. I couldn't even "find" the coin I could see.
Maybe you were hallucinating the coin?
let's visit the unlikely scenario that we finish 5th, 6th, or 7th (again) in SEC West this year. Will Gus be our coach for 2017?
Making an assumption that we are looking for a HC next year (or the year after), who's the magician that could take the talent left behind by Gus and win us another state championship?
A dectectorist! That's brilliant!
There's a guy(?) in Moody. That's just over the bridge from Leeds! This is perfect.
http://metaldetectingforum.com/group.php?do=discuss&discussionid=487&pp=20&page=3
I'd watch out for Sandi B in Florala, AL. I seam to remember she was secretly part of the rival detectorist society, and my cause problems with the wife.
Being a detectorist in Alabama probably isn't as cool as Europe, the Middle East, or even Mexico or South America. Alabama was in the Stone Age until the 1800s. I guess you can find some civil war bullets somewhere or something.
I once heard Tatorbug say, "Eufaula, I-faula, we all-faula the beep of the metal detector."
@MJT Keep this under your hat, but it's a little known fact that Alabama was one of the pre-Columbus landing sites by the Vikings. They made it a good way into the mainland at that. We dectorists keep it on the down low, but there are some nice finds to be had around these parts.
I'm still waiting for season 2, bubbs :(
Maybe Jimmy can start an "Adventures of bubbs, Alabama Detectorist Extraordinaire" tv series. It could be filmed on the 40 Acres in Culver City. Or maybe Cullman has 40 acres they could spare.
I feel like Cullman might be a little bammercentric even for a detectorist show. But I'll defer to Jimmy's knowledge on what he thinks would be best for the series.
Another suggestion, Glenwood. I bet it's almost a ghost town. With all the iron ore that went through there during the last century, your detector should be singing, unless you ruin the show by using a VLF discriminator.
How 'bout it, Jimmy? Where we making this thing?
Shouldn't these students have been in class at the time?
http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/02/gus_malzahn_thinks_ahead_calls_50_juniors.html
bubbs, they're football players.
Dag gummit looks like NatGeo already has a show.
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/diggers/
We just gotta come at it from a different angle, Jimmy.
Maybe we should set this whole thing in Eurasia. That would open up a plethora of additional avenues the show could explore.
Things could get bloody if you find my buried Robot Brigade and accidentally activate them. It would make for good TV, though.

Campfiyah is hoppin!!!
I just doused the embers
Jimmy, can we use the theme song from The Rat Patrol?
Interesting theme song choice, THT. I've heard the Brits didn't like that show, because we "showed up late" to that front. Which makes me like the choice even more.
Sounds like we should actively look for that Robot Brigade, MJT. Is there a story as to why they were buried?
AU gets 33/1 odds for the natty this year.
Pay no attention to who wrote the article. This gives a peak at what next year's recruiting class could look like: http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/02/early_took_at_auburn_recruiting_2017_national_signing_day.html
Hey, THT. Looks like you can find some (all?) of The Rat Patrol episodes on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxcmDCo9LLI
Yeah bubbs, there's a story to the Robot Brigade. Did I not tell you guys about the time I outlawed tacos?
Still waiting on the taco story, MJT. But you imply it has something to do with your Robot Brigade ... I think we all know where this is going.
As always, our favorite writer just has no idea how English works:
"Auburn landed another top 10 recruiting class in 2016 but it's never too early to look ahead to what the Tigers will need next year."
Run-on sentence. You need a comma in there. He gets it wrong at least once in every article.
"Following the 2016 season, Auburn will lose 16 scholarship seniors, with a few juniors, including Carl Lawson, also likely to considering leaving early."
Carl Lawson sure is likely to considering leaving early.
"Having Franklin, a presumptive second-year starter, and White as his backup is a good foundation and Auburn has another true dual-threat quarterback on the roster, in Woody Barrett."
Another run on. I will buy him some commas if he needs some. This is embarrassing.
"Auburn could target backs out of both the JUCO and high school ranks in 2017 and already has four-star prospect Alaric Williams, a 6-foot, 195-pound athlete, committed but it's unclear what position he'll wind up at."
run-on, needs comma
"Only Jason Smith is scheduled to be a senior in 2018 so the Tigers will clearly be relying heavily on second and third-year players at that point."
Needs a comma. Also, Jason Smith won't be a senior in 2018. He'll be gone.
I think that's enough for now.
I can forgive his grammatical ignorance since he provides such profound insight:
"By far the personnel group Auburn is lacking at most is linebacker"
That reminds me. We still have a couple slots open for this class. What are the chances we grab a JUCO LB this year?
in keeping with theory of string concatenation...

Hearing something about us looking at a grad transfer LB or two. Would like to find someone that has more than one year left.
This comment has been removed by the author.
THT, glad to see you finally accepted that wonderful way of recording BEASLEY!!!!s
I'm hearing we are looking at a grad transfer LB or two. The guy I heard it from also commented that he would like to find someone with more than one year left.
Double verified rumor. Consider it fact.
this page
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14625959/michigan-wolverines-texas-aggies-lead-way-impact-transfers-2016-college-football-season
lists only a few LBs, but they've already committed elsewhere.
If we could have gotten that Nebraska linebacker, it would have been like total nirvana
LB Cecil Cherry, Texas to USF
LB John Kenny, Iowa to Arizona
LB Courtney Love, Nebraska to Kentucky
LB E.J. Levenberry, Florida State to UConn
I don't know about y'all, but I certainly earned my keep today. Y'all have a great weekend.
I was lucky today. The company didn't require much of me, but I used my time to be productive (on my own projects).
See you guys on Monday.
Wow, you guys are right about that LB
http://auburn.247sports.com/Bolt/Could-Illinois-linebacker-be-Auburn-bound-43532203
if we're going for an Illinois LB, I'd rather it be Butkus.
To me, the big problem is that it's of very minor help. We fill some of the need but only for one year. We didn't do much with the current class, so the problem persists through the season after.
I suppose it's better than not doing anything at all.
So. MJT. Can I assume correctly that your Eurasia's production wing had something to do with that "puppy, monkey, baby" ... thing?
Please tell me Jimmy wasn't involved.
I refuse to answer that question bubbs, and I now am walking away from the podium.
that was one creepy commercial.
I only made it til the end of the 2nd qtr. I had zero interest in half-time, and had gone on to better use of time thereafter. Since y'all haven't been considerate enough to inform me, I'll now go to yahoo sports to see what the final score was.
ugh, doesn't look like I missed much.
How about this?
"Brandon Marcello @bmarcello 8m8 minutes ago
Outgoing WR Ricardo Louis, on Periscope, says JF3 is going to be good, but "I think Jeremy (Johnson) is going to start though.""
I have to hope that's a pal giving another pal some props. Or that Ricardo would make a terrible coach, and Gus wont heed his inkling.
Can you imagine the fans, if they trot JJ out there when we open against Clemson? I think the stands might start emptying right then and there.
I will have driven too far to leave during AU's first offensive series. Who starts at qb won't influence my departure. Team performance will. I have hope that the JJ who started against Arkansas in 2014 will suit up for 2016.
2014 JJ is a myth, THT. Don't be fooled into believing otherwise. There were shiny mirrors, hats with rabbits, and lots of trap doors involved.
I just can't imagine any scenario where JJ starts, even if he looks 6 times beter than the other QBs in practice.
"You cain't get fooled again."
-Thomas Jefferson
just heard about an auction coming up later this year. The family called some local auction company (with farm equipment on their web site) about a bunch of books. Turned out to be thousands of books crammed into cardboard boxes randomly, as many as would fit. One small 1672 book that will probably bring $100,000 or more was in a box with 20th century children's books. Another 1672 book probably worth $10,000-$15,000 was in a box with late 20th century how to practice buddhism books. The sellers are absurdly rich and were only interested in getting the books out of their parents house. That's not a lifestyle with which I'm familiar.
You wouldn't like it, THT. I'm constantly shoving stacks of bills in odd places just because they keep getting in the way. I'm, like, "will someone please get all this green paper outta my face?" So yeah. I'll occasionally sell something on craigslist to get it out of the way. If there happens to be lots of money stashed in the said item .... so be it.
All aboard the JJ Express!!!
Do we have another player prospect with the initials "JJ"? Crazy.
Got a good walk-on deep snapper coming in named Jerry Jaroshamadu.
And a really solid holder named Jim Jobamanu.
Not sure which train Tar Heel Tiger is on, though.

Holly should probably give up smoking, Jimmy. Let her know I said as much.
I keep thinking, "Why didn't that guy pull the cat into the pool with him? Or just jump in on his own to get away?"
What does Holly smoke? Can't youtube in prison.
Penguins, once 14th in the East, are for the moment the 6th seed. However, they are only 3 points in the standings from being out of the playoffs. Gotta keep winning.

Feels like summer here, I wish I had some snow out my window
I wish we had this weather 9 months out of the year instead of the 9 months of summer I suffer through every year.
Fish heads, eat them up yum.
Pens currently 3rd seed in their division.
QUIT HOGGING ALL THE SNOW, bubbs. Yesterday it was low 40s and intermittent pouring rain. I still liked it better than summer.
Ah. Fish heads. Thanks, THT. That brought back a lot of memories.
I don't want your thanks, bubbs. I want your snow!
Anyways, it was the least I could do before heading off to my parole hearing. And the least I can do is usually my choice.
hey bubbs, we had 1,693 snowflakes this afternoon, four of which were obviously fake*. Thanks for being so generous, bubbs.
Jimmy, I sent 29 snowflakes to you via one of Michael's stewed pigeons.

nanoseconds aren't real, THT. I don't believe in a time unit that I can't count in.
I also don't believe in number I haven't counted to. Thus, I deem all numbers above 1,689 to be fake.

Time flies. You know, I haven't been to an Auburn game since homecoming 2010 (I also got to watch the LSU game that year with THT thanks to his generosity. You da man, THT!)
That's right bubbs. I met THT and his wife, and we ate nachos together and watched Ontario McIrishman run 70 yards for a touchdown. JEALOUS!?!?!
Yeah. Well. THT is gonna take me on a trip to Alaska with him. JEALOUS!?!?!?
yep, and it's so convenient to get there. We'll just hit I-40 a mile from my house and head west to Exit 100.
Should be a nice drive.
Hey, THT. You wont believe what I heard on twitter yesterday. Norm is dating Art's MIL!
I thought we established that you were Art's MIL, bubbs. Now I'm just confused.
Art was making spurious claims. I've never even been to Linden, AL so how could I be his MIL?
But Norm was actually hitting on Art's MIL right there on twitter for all to see.
I'm sure with GMB's blessing, no doubt. Anything to get him out of the house.
My theory is that GMB knows that this will end in a gun fight, so she upped Norm's life insurance and is letting him proceed.
Penguins have been doing great lately in their games not televised for the whole world. I finally will get to watch them tonight on the telly. Odds are very high that they'll stink.
As I finish my lunch, I am reminded of the unequivocal fact that MrsTHT and 2.0 can each make the very best poundcake in the entire universe.
They should call it Tavarreus Poundscake.
THT: Ooo playing the Rangers on NBCSN I'll tune in.
Have you watched Jack Eichel play yet, exciting young player, I hope he doesn't languish in Buff for years.
Jimmy, I'm too cheap to pay for NHL CenterIce, so Buffalo isn't on my TV... unless they play the Hurricanes but then I don't follow the 'canes that closely to know who/when they are playing.
Short answer: no.
Dear Leader languished in the buff for years.
But, really, is there any other way to go about being in the buff for any extended period?
Penguins play in Raleigh on Friday night, but we'll be in Charlotte for a funeral. 2.0 is not pleased.
I can't speak from personal experience, but I've not heard nudist colony members complain about languishing. They seem a generally happy collection of oddballs.
Speaking of balls, I liked the T-mobile commercial with Steve Harvey.
That was a pretty good commercial. Like I always say: best to embrace your mistakes and make money out of them. I mean, just think, the movie Titanic would never have been made with out that guy hitting an iceberg.
I actually did not dislike Harbaugh before, but he's making it very easy to do so.

I fail to see how hugging one's ex could be profitable.
Seems pretty clear to me, THT. Because that hug prompts your ex to fund your Murder of Crows business plan.
I don't have a Murder of Crows. Or a Trip of Goats. And I still don't have an ex. Count me among the destitute.
My multiyear thin & crispy Pizza Hut pizza privation will end tonight. MrsTHT makes the very best homemade pizza from scratch, but we'll give her a break tonight. After all, she did forget to take the poundcake to her family last weekend and I reaped the benefits.
Penguins officially stink. I'm guessing their recent success has been against fellow bottom dwellers. Crosby doesn't even have a shot on goal through 2 periods. I'm going to bed.
Oh, btw, Jimmy, Penguins and Sabres on NBC on Sunday 21 Feb.
Hmm. I wonder if there's something about your fandom, THT ... Would you mind becoming a bammer fan for a season so we can see if they tank?
yes I would. I'd rather be waterboarded and subjected to anything else The Donald dreams up.
What if the Donald dreamed up giving you a tattoo of the Bear on one arm and Saban on the other?
I'd re-tattoo them being eaten by an Auburn Tiger.
with blood and entrails everywhere.
with the remnants being waterboarded.
in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
And Toomer's Corner oaks (live ones) being rolled tattooed on my back.
The Donald has really turned you into a gangster, THT.
That guy is really making America great again.
He's the John Scott of the presidential campaign.
Did I ever tell y'all how much I hate Windows? Only 3 complete reboots required at work today so far.
I guess I shouldn't complain. At least I'm not using TrapDoors, the Official Eurasian OS.

That probably jacked up your screen. Lemme try that again.

What are you watching on Netflix these days, THT?
1) I ain't datin nobody's MIL and I don't care what the Twitter Machine has to say about it.
2) We do have lots of guns in the house and vehicles. And we did recently up my Life Insurance benefits. You may be onto something there.
3) I've been fortunate enough to have met 3/4 of the THT clan. So I've got that goin for me, which is nice.
4) This is the time of year I start to watch hockey sometimes. Then when the Playoffs and Finals happen, I'm pretty well tuned in to it. I have no team allegiance, who should be my team Doc?
bubbs, I don't generally do Netflix, though I made an exception for The Dectorists. The rest of the family does that.
Norm, is it safe to assume you want a winner? Go with the Blackhawks.
Norm is a AU fan. It's probably better to assume that he wants an emotional roller-coaster.
How do you do? Uh-huh.
Hey, MJT. Has the water cooler talk been filled with gravitational waves the past few days? I bet some of your old NASA buddies are going nuts.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I actually haven't talked with anyone with regards to gravitational waves... I don't work NASA these days, and there is less gee-wiz isn't this neat sort of attitude here. Gravity waves have zero practical consequence for the engineer at this time, so it's more the science nerd reddit crowd that would follow the story. I mostly hang with practical doers (though I myself tend to be more in the science nerd crowd probably).
But I'm hanging with some old college chums at lunch today. They all do NASA type stuff. I'll report back if they bring it up.
A story to illustrate the engineering mindset: so my focus in grad school was orbital mechanics, which was all about dat gravity. The professor for all the orbital mechanics classes was smart and awesome and stuff, but one day I asked him, "What's the speed of gravity?" He looked at me like I was crazy. I was like, if the sun suddenly appeared, how long would it take for something X miles away to feel it's gravitational pull? I couldn't really get him to understand my question though. He was an engineer through and through, so that sort of question was kind of useless as far as he was concerned. He was just like, "This is what gravity does. What the heck are you asking?"
And I guess this gravity wave stuff now proves that it moves the speed of light (which is what the internet said 10 years ago, so maybe that was already proven... i dunno)
Yeah, I remembered that you weren't NASA anymore. Figured you might have communications with those types still, though.
My understanding is that 1. Your question about the sun popping in/out of existence has been a common theoretical one. B. The speed of gravity has always been a theory to this point. (Did Albert assert the speed or just that waves existed? I dunno).
I'm fascinated by all this stuff, even though much of it is far above my head. And it often gets freaky re: relativity.
Gravity ain't so fast. I blew by it in my 4 cylinder Subaru yesterday.
I'm off to Charlotte and from there to Marion SC tomorrow morning before returning to work the Great BuyMore All-Day Sunday Valentine's Sale.
Tar Heel Tiger wanted me to wish y'all a great weekend.
Glad the two of you are back on speaking terms. Tell him we wish him a good weekend as well.
This guy is awesome:
http://www.gq.com/story/cleveland-teen-becomes-rec-league-legend
I too was a co-ed rec league soccer trouble maker in high school, though he definitely has outdone me. My list is much shorter and not as funny(though I'm particularly proud of the last one)
- after the goalie punted from the other team, the ball came to me. I made a fair catch signal and caught it (though I may have ripped this off of a friend of mine... can't remember who did it first)
- I took pictures while playing (with an old fashioned cheap film camera of course)
- We were losing about 6-0 in my last game senior year. I played defense. They had just passed the ball near our goal, our goalie was out of position, and a guy kicked it in the air toward our goal. It was about to go in, so I jumped over and snagged it with my hands to keep them from scoring a goal. I then ran with the ball to the fence and threw it over, and then I took my shirt off and started running around yelling. I was kicked out of the game... but then I went back in a few minutes later, and the ref didn't say anything, so I kept playing.
35 degrees and 15 mph NW winds for the graveyard service tomorrow. I feel like General Joseph Johnston behind my keyboard.
wow. That dumpster fire on the plains just keeps smoldering and intermittently erupting into giant flames. Can't somebody please extinguish it.
In better news, Holmes (CC – MS): Defensive backs coach Chris Shelling is expected to be promoted to defensive coordinator source tells FootballScoop.
I LOVE snow. I'd love snow more if it waited until the BuyMore closes. I don't mind driving in it, but I hate wasting 20 minutes "de-snowing" the car so I can actually drive. The snow is piling up quickly out there.
No snow here but baseball tryouts scheduled for tonight are likely to be impacted by rain. Maybe the rain will also dampen certain dumpster fires.
Eh. I would say all this off season stuff with AU is circumstantial evidence of a dumpster fire. If Gus pulls a rabbit out of his hat and turns things around, all will be forgotten. He'll be an offensive genius once again.
Unfortunately, I tend to think a dumpster fire is the more likely scenario.
And if a frog had wings...
I, for one, would welcome our flying, amphibious overlords.
Hmm. Kodi back at AU.
Welp, that about wraps up Gus's tenure at Auburn.
KB might be able to coach what we got, but I have a hard time believing he's anywhere close to the recruiter that DC is.
Gus is circling wagons. He's surrounding himself with his proteges. I don't see how this ends well.
I think you misspelled "depressing," MJT.
TGWoS
Yeah, it's a bummer man. I think it's bad for Gus in the long run. I don't think it affects the upcoming season, though.
I don't really buy the "DC is leaving the sinking ship" line of thinking. I think he was being marginalized, so he's gonna give it a go elsewhere.
Honestly, when I separate emotion from the equation, the Kodi Burns hire might be more troubling than the DC departure.
For sure. That's why my first post this morning was very "meh" in tone vs. my post on Kodi.
Losing DC hurts, but I don't know that it really says anything about the state of the program in and of itself. The Kodi hire does say something.
Yeah. It says Gus is assembling a crew of "yes men".
DANG IT!
Leeds just lost its football coach. We were churning out state championships too!
What the hell am I supposed to do now?
How 'bout that AU softball team. Maybe I have season tickets for the wrong sport.
Leads!
We didn't want him anyway
How about Equestrian?
Or Gymnastics? They had a big win recently right? However it is they calculate such.
How did we lose so many posts in the transfer portal? I thought this was supposed to be a two way street? Oh, wait, there is no tranfer portal in 2016.
We'll have this thing back to 5000 in no time. Well, at some time. Who's keeping time?
How's that Kodi Burns hire working out for Gus?
I'm not a rat to be spat on, locked up in this room
Those bars that look towards the sun at night look towards the moon
This thread leaks posts faster than my car leaks oil, and that's nothing to sneeze at.
But you did anyway. Gesundheit.
Let's make yet another 4970th post.
