OK. So you all have reached 5,000 posts, so THT has asked that I make a new thread. I'll gladly acquiesce. But first, a photo of the always-lovely Jenna Fischer to user in a new post. Please enjoy.

any of y'all use Signal by Open Whisper Systems to make encrypted phone calls or texting? I just installed it on my phone, and I'm trying to figure out why. I don't have anything to say worth encrypting, except maybe all of my posts here.

I'm guessing michael uses it intermittently

I only use one encrypted app: Couple

It pairs my phone with one other one (the wife's). As you say, it's not that we're passing back and forth any information I'm super concerned about someone seeing, but I like my privacy. Just like I wouldn't care for someone to eavesdrop on one of our verbal conversations, I'd prefer our mobile communication to be just between us. Been using it for several years, it's free etc etc.

Hardly ever talk on the phone, so I don't have much use for encrypting that.

9:07 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

It's probably a close estimate that 90% of my cell phone conversations are, "I'm on my way home. Is dinner ready?"

Actually, the interrogative is implied, not spoken.

There's a tweet saying Devin Adams (another JUCO QB) is on the spring roster. Uh ... 1. How did that get past all the hacks till now? 2. Is there an NCAA limit on how many qbs you can have, because I think we're getting close to it?

Also: Pro-style 3* out of the 2014 class.

How many more days, THT?

550 days until 2017 kickoff. WARRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!

Homemade pizza by MrsTHT using some of the scratch that 2.0 did not use when baking brownies on Sunday. At least, that's what I ate. Blue Bell for dessert, of course. I don't know what MrsTHT ate, but it wasn't pizza. MrsTHT and 2.0 have recently made French onion soup for their own consumption. I've been told (but don't believe for a nanosecond, much less for 5001 seconds) that it is delicious.

Peachy and right busy.

So on birds; living in a neighborhood surrounded by lots and lots of woods, I'm right used to seeing buzzards overhead. Usually, it's a wake of maybe 4 or 5 of the disgusting creatures. One day a year or so ago (maybe it was before or after a big storm, can't remember), there were LITERALLY hundreds of them above the neighborhood for quite awhile. It was eery.

9:52 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

talk about eery... the other night I went out and the sky was filled with stars and then last night I didn't see a single one. Now that's eery.

9:59 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

THT, they've been deliberating for over a week now and no one brought them water. I'd say you're safe regardless.

Norm, perchance had there been a drifter in the area prior to the buzzard sighting?

10:00 AM
Blogger Norm said...

For that many buzzards, I hardly think a single drifter would suffice. Even if he'd been morbidly obese (which seems counterintuitive for the drifter profession) and the usual post-life bloating.

I tape an old business card over the lens of the internal laptop camera. That's just how I roll. I'll rarely need to use that camera and when I do, I just pull the card over to the side. I've been on too many webex meetings and see coworkers who had no idea they were on camera. That, and I don't trust Big Brother.

I got scoop here: saw some of Saturday's practice through the trees while at Auburn (was there for a swim meet). Saw some offense vs defense. JJ threw a long touchdown and seemed to get the a lot of the snaps while I watched. Franklin was in some, and ran it most of the snaps I witnessed. Sean White was only in a couple of snaps that I saw, but he hit a nice out route. The running backs scored every time the ran the ball, but I suspect that is because they weren't allowed to be tackled. Both lines were live though, and there was some nice pad crunching.

Also, the coaches yell a lot. And Gus (or someone) says "hurry up" a lot. and the kickers kicked on their side of the field the entire time, and no coaches were yelling at them. And every few minutes there is a horn and someone says "PERIOD X" and everyone goes and runs to their next thing.

I also took some super secret pictures with my telephoto lens I had there for the swim tournament. I was like the paparazzi. Had a real good perch from the top of the stairs on the outiside of the aquatic center.

In other trip news: I don't like how Auburn has so many huge buildings now. doesn't feel like Auburn any more. It feels like UT or one of those other soulless colleges. OK, maybe not that bad since the buildings actually look good, but still, it has lost some of that Auburn feel to me. I might be 100 years old. Git off my lawn!

So JJ is our QB for 2016?

9:42 PM
Blogger michael said...

They didn't assign JJ to water boy duty, which is what I would have hoped for based on last year. So it does seem that he is getting some looks in practice. MJT's baseless prediction is still JFIII, though that might be wishful thinking.

I actually took a picture of the last real CDV building standing (I meant to make a tweet about it, actually... might get around to that tomorrow). I didn't have no time to take pictures of the extension, cause I am too cool for that.

11:42 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Gus keeps saying they "might" go live on the QBs after spring break. I think that's when JJ will crumble. Specifically, if the defense mixes up the packages to confuse him on the passing plays, I suspect he'll loose some of his shine.

The great and terrible thing about a Gus offense is that so much hinges on the QB. If he has a good one, the offense is lights out. If a guy back there is even average, it struggles mightily. It took last season for me to accept that fact, and maybe Gus too. He did put 5 QBs on the roster this year. He's scrambling. Wait. I said 5. Don't we have #6 coming in the fall?

8:45 AM
Blogger michael said...

The long pass JJ completed when I was watching was on that double fake reverse play that Gus dials up once a game, which made me shudder a bit. That play used to be money, but I'm pretty sure errybody has figured it out now.

But it don't matter who the QB is, because our defense will carry us this next year. Right?

Jimmy, it's so much simpler to copy/paste the URL than it is to create a hyperlink. I'm just a "tiny bit" OCD. If I told you how to do it, I'd end up creating a link rather than showing you how to do it. I got the instructions from SteveFC (or maybe Monica) back in December 2008; I'll post it tonight when I get home. In the meantime, I found this "timely" post when searching for it on HABOTN:

Yup... 2008 sent me into an Auburn football existential crisis. I definitely figured out I cared waaaayyy too much about it that year. I have a better perspective now... which lets me not get so down when things go wrong, but also not quite get so high when things go great (the downside of having "perspective" or whatever).

I remember thinking when Auburn won the BCS, "Boy, this would have been a lot cooler for me if it had happened three years ago. Doh well!"

1:44 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

That was your problem, MJT. To make an analogy, you sold while your stock was rock bottom. You should have held out until 2010, then gained perspective.

To follow that through, we should really start caring this year. AU stock is pretty stinkin' low right now. It's a great penny buy. We can sell out again in a couple years with a new coach and title run.

Zeke Pike signed during the 2.0 years... meaning any evidence of an Express has been set on fire and lost forever. Not even Future Internet Archaeologists will be able to find a trace of it.

FIAs don't have nothin' on the Master of Web Searching. Actually, Google was of no use in finding this

T̶h̶a̶n̶k̶f̶u̶l̶l̶y̶ Unfortunately, I haven't yet found a way to text-search said Forum archive, so the dolt who proclaimed Zeke Pike as AU's starting QB as a true freshman remains a mystery.

Blogger michael said...

i've actually been on that site before looking for 2.0 stuff, but the majority of the pages of the forum weren't archived.

fortunately, I saved a few of the threads myself before the board's demise ("Leff Turns" will be our era's "Gilgamesh" in a few thousand years)

The "Bench Cam" thread has a little less pop now that SFC has gone underground.

I know where you can find steve if you would like, we even exchanged a couple posts last week, but yes underground is appropriate.

I'd love to read the Bench Cam saga yet again. He's not only welcome at 1.0, he's welcome elsewhere too but has chosen not to.

I learned something at baseball practice last night which I'll share here; a kid on an opposing team is the son of none other than The Lizard. Kid's a pretty good baseball player and is one of only 2 players on his current team with anything resembling speed.

Lizard, jr.?

Jimmy, I didn't forget about the link stuff, I just never got around to turning on my laptop last night. That happens about twice a year.

too bad NHL season can't end right this minute. The Penguins are in about as good a spot as they can hope for, the 7th seed, which would get them out of the bracket with the Capitals and Rangers. They could be 8th seed after tonight, and easily out of the playoffs completely by end of season. April has 1 home and 4 away games. Two of those 5 are against Flyers.
Last 9 meetings between Pens & Flyers? Pens 1, Flyers 8

Blogger bubbs said...

So, hey. Does anyone know what JayG thinks about the QB situation?

12:57 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I just looked at the roster and was surprised we only have 4, plus one "athlete". Even Florida has more mediocre QBs taking up roster spots than we do.

1:27 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'd rather not talk about it, although I just did. I'd just as soon hear JayG's thoughts on the BC coaching situation.

I'm a bit of a QB expert. If you have any questions bubbs, feel free to ask.

1:47 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

bubbs wants to know, in two words, what does former AU QB Frank Stubbs have in common with F. Scott Fitzgerald?

1:59 PM
Blogger michael said...

Well that's easy. They were both married to Mary Lou Retton.

Next question.

2:04 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

just found this, so maybe it was John Trapp instead of Stubbs.

In the meantime, I'd be pleased if the self-proclaimed QB expert would fill in the data for the missing years here

2:08 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Yeah, and someone on fight club (one of the lady types - ephem?) had parents that hung out with them or something like that.

2:24 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Hey, MJT. Have you or your QB expert friend noticed anyone sucking it up this spring like Cam did back in 2010?

2:39 PM

THT: the missing QBs are John Durbawitz, Fifi Bon Solomon, Ted Juice, Thebes Cantilever, Dredmond Dredbonavitz, Jacob Powell, Greg Zzzonton, and Dream Skybaby.

he was my 2nd all-time favorite. He could put ZZZZZZZZip on the ball like nobody's bidness.

I love me some Thebes, even if he was a yankee. He was a great lunchpail blue collar QB, got the job done. But Forth Cantilever, now there's a QB with some pizazz.

2:51 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Dred was a good one.

2:55 PM
Blogger michael said...

THT, I think the proper spelling is "Buttforth Cantilever." I didn't include him because he never technically started. Fun fact: in 1947, Auburn held a weekly fundraising raffle to pick a student at random to start the game at quarterback. Students would buy lots of tickets with hopes of being the "starting" QB. After the first play, Buttforth* would come in. Some people thought the practice would end after Auburn's youngest student, the 11 year blind child genius Dallas Strobemange, won the raffle and was nearly killed the first play of the Tulane game. Anyway, I didn't include the names of all the raffle winners ealier, because they weren't really real starters anyway.

*some Auburn historians think his real first name was Clancy, but coach would yell at him "Bring your butt forth!" after the first play and tell him to go in. The nickname stuck. These Auburn historians are wrong, though. His given name was Buttforth.

3:06 PM
Blogger michael said...

And yes, Buttforth and Thebes were brothers. That much should be obvious.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

you should publish a book about AU history. I'd have one on my coffee table, for sure. Except, I don't drink coffee, so I couldn't put it on any of my tables. Maybe I could use it to swat Zika-laden mosquitoes. Then I'd buy your whole inventory and sell for huge profits as a cure for the Zika virus. I could be rich if you'd just hurry up and publish your book.

My father's parents were "associates" with F. Scott and Zelda, Zelda in particular since she was from The Gump. I recall seeing a pic or several of the Fitzgerald's at a party at my grandparent's house.

Harrison is on the Twitters still. He tweeted right at me just a couple of days ago, in fact. So he must be doing great.

1:31 PM
Blogger Norm said...

For what I spent, that'd be a shovel purchased by DoD back in the day. Had no idea 10-3 electrical wiring would be as expensive as it was. Went ahead and snatched up 250' worth to accomplish the job at hand and the one which is pending. Not me, I don't do electrical beyond replacing a fixture, I'm supporting the local economy by paying someone to do it.

1:34 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Norm, there's a reason people break into homes and steal copper pipe/wiring.

1:38 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

By the way, I hate twitter's new fangled ordering of things. A timeline, by definition, should be chronological. I don't need no algorithm trying to decide what I want to look at next.

1:39 PM
Blogger Norm said...

This wiring will be run through conduit and largely buried underground.

I use Echofon as my tweeter replacement, my TL is chronological just as I like it.

1:51 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I only look at the tweety list about once every 5 days. I don't pay any attention to the order. I hardly pay any attention to the tweets.

I just looked up Echofon to see what I was missing. They say it will "enable you to manage your busy social media life on Twitter".

Well, that's a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. If I had a busy social anything, I'd run and crawl in a hole. Head first.

1:57 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Hate to break this to you, THT, but this here blog comment section is the social media super highway.

Hey MJT/Norm you guys know of anyone trying to unload a mini-van/SUV(with 3rd row)? I'm looking to make a very slight upgrade (i.e. not spend much money). Right now I'm shaking the bushes to see what's out there.

2:03 PM
Blogger Norm said...

No Sir, sure don't. I use Craig's List for such. Bound to be one or several for sale in your general vicinity. I'd sell you my 2WD Tahoe with 3rd row. It's an 07 and has like 125k. But, since it runs fine and considering how little I need to drive it (outside of hunting season), I'll keep it until some repair which just doesn't make sense comes my way.

2:15 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'll be honest. I love this stuff.

2:19 PM

I'll give you tree-fiddy for that Tahoe. No, but seriously, something about like that is what I'm hunting.

Been keeping an eye on craigslist. Will continue to do so.

2:20 PM

bubbs, I seriously doubt Norm would even consider an offer of $350K. Be reasonable, man.

2:36 PM
