You're going on a walk with 2.0 and the grandpuppies?

Yep, we met up with bubbs in the long cul de sac. I think he took the shortcut through the woods.

Penguins aren't playing tonight. That can mean only one thing. We've got great hockey tonight. Specifically, Blackhawks and Blues.

Blogger bubbs said...

You should have seen THT's face when I met them in the cul de sac. If it weren't for the BB ice cream I had in hand, I'm pretty sure he would have displayed his 40 time for us.

8:36 AM
Blogger michael said...

Using BB ice cream as bait and onions as a deterrent, you can get THT to basically go anywhere you want him to go (only exceptions being Alabama clothing stores, Bear Bryant shrines, things of this nature).

9:37 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that's pretty much spot on, mjt.

I'm getting fat eating large doses of homemade brownies and BB every night. Fortunately(?), we only have one container of BB remaining.

F4* is only in school a half day today. He says he wants his grandmother to pick him up and hang out with her. I say I want him coming home and pushing the lawnmower around the yard for the first time this year. He needs the practice since he's of prime age to go knock on doors on the street. We'll see what happens.

So a response from some people on the authoritarian Trump hypothesis (their data disagrees with the earlier article discussed here):

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2016/03/09/trumps-voters-arent-authoritarians-new-research-says-so-what-are-they/

11:30 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Interesting. By looking at that, the populace 1. doesn't trust experts (Trump) and 2. wants to stick it to the man (Sanders).

Sounds about right. Check out Hillary, though, it's like she has no definable traits. None of these anyway. Maybe someone else will come behind these guys and measure some additional ones.

FWIW - This article has a similar tone (over-confident in their analysis) as the last one.

1:31 PM
Blogger michael said...

Agree with the tone... but at least there wasn't a statement about the authors having studied populism for years.

As long as we're talking mysteries, I read this yesterday and found it fascinating:

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/science-question-from-a-toddler-why-am-i-right-handed/

Apparently "experts" still don't know why most people are right-handed. No wonder Trump supporters don't trust them!

Nice. We got one kid that's a lefty. I'm always a fan of data that says "it's not so simple."

Just got done reading The Hidden Brain. Wild stuff. He talks some about the influence that race has in elections. I already assumed that everyone comes pre-built as a racist, but he puts data to it. Glad I read it. Worth thinking through.

Hi Jimmy,
I was stuck at a BuyMore stocking shelves until 6 pm today and didn't get to watch Penguins hockey. I'm now watching stress-free hockey, a good matchup so far between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs.

Guess who doesn't have to go to work tomorrow? WOOT WOOT!!!

8:20 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I haven't watched much hockey at all lately. I expect that to change whenever playoffs start, that's when it really gets interesting to me and I can make more of an effort. I don't watch basketball. Ever. I've watched a bit of golf lately. That's it for my sports watching of late. Political races count for sports? If so, I amend my earlier statement.

11:29 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'll watch soccer or even NBA before I'll watch political anything, even if it's the "good guys"... perhaps that's an oxymoron.

Right now, I'd vote for anyone who will get this down to double digits where it belongs.

I had tv control for about half of the Kings game; Quick was superb. Malkin won't be back for about "6-8 weeks". I.e. Penguins will have to make the playoffs and get through 1st round without him.

Got home from baseball practice and turned on my tube around 9p. Caught a bit of news and then watched a couple of DVRd shows. So once again, no sports.

12:05 PM
Blogger Norm said...

JGT's post this morning:

Peeps:

My family has been dealt a very difficult blow. My sister, my only sibling, died suddenly and unexpectedly Monday. I found out just as Auburn softball celebrated its amazing, walk-off win against Florida Monday night. I stood at the intersection of unabated joy and total misery at that moment. The smiles and the cheers and the fist pumps made the worst telephone call of my life a little less jarring. For that I am thankful. Very thankful.

I'm headed to Louisville to help my parents get my sister's things in order and prepare to say goodbye. Bryan and Jeffrey will continue their strong work here; the two best co-workers a guy could have. Their support means the world to me.

So please, if you're so inclined, say a prayer or two for my sister. Kimberlee Tate. She was a kind and gentle person with a great heart, certainly the better of the two of us.

Without going into too much detail, I always was worried that the next time I saw Kimmy would be the last time I saw her. She lived a lifestyle much different than my own. I learned over time to savor every hug, every message, every chance to talk with her. I guess you could say that I knew this day would arrive eventually. That doesn't make this day any easier to accept.

Peace be with all of you. See you soon.

re: http://www.bbc.com/news/health-35459054

Whenever I see news like that, it makes me think of Gattaca. I don't think we'll end up in quite that scenario, but it explores just a handful of the implications. I think these "oversight" committees are being less than truthful. They're saying "Look at how we could solve problems x, y, z. There might be some of these other ethical problems that arise, but we'll deal with them as they come up. I'm sure we can figure it out."

For clarity: I believe the practice (as described) is unethical/immoral regardless of outcome.

AU football seat selection web site has crashed. I wish I could claim responsibility. The seat diagram for the section where my seats are was completely jacked up. It included about 20 seats that don't exist on my row, and it showed my seats on the wrong aisle.

Blogger michael said...

Selling seats that don't exist is a great way of making money.

Confusing folks as to where they're supposed to be is also a great way to cover up the said missing seats.

maybe one of these days MrsTHT will let me relinquish those seats, but I doubt it. She's stated on more than one occasion that relinquishing me is more likely.

11:05 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???

Dude is a narcissist, if he thinks a senior in college who just won the natty cares one bit about his tie.

Heck, Jim could show up in my office this morning and present his tie to me with due ceremony. My first thought: "So how long do I have to keep this thing before I can throw it away? Is it like a birthday card? One year?"

11:13 AM
Blogger michael said...

Nantz doesn't come close to Verne, that's for dang sure. Now that would be a special tie.

Villanova cost me $65 in the office pool. I would have come in second had UNC won.

Even worse, I missed the amazing game because I fell asleep reading with my boy. How do you like that?

11:44 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I had to be other places, and knew I was going to be asleep by 930 so I didn't even bother to try and watch it.

I would accept Verne's tie and immediately burn it in front of him. Of course, I would offer to put the fire out if he could name three players in a row without butchering their names.

Just read the JFIII article. So that guy is convinced JFIII is the leader because he went live in practice? That's a pretty a pretty silly leap. In fact, if he was the clear number 1, he wouldn't have to go live (like Nick Marshall in 2014).

Going live shows that he has a shot, but his arm by itself isn't good enough to win the job outright for him... which is what we all expected.

12:14 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Any way you slice and dice, or QB situation is not much better than it was last year - at best.

It sounds like JFIII can run it, but: A. He may not be durable 2. His accuracy is not great III. I don't like that GusCo seem to call which option the QB will take before the snap.

We have to bank of a metamorphosis from JJ, or hope that we can get by on a poor man's Nick Marshall.

How many days till the 2017 season, THT?

1. that blog ain't "independent". It doesn't even talk about the years when BOTH parties are in turmoil. GO SANDERS!

2. 514. Mid December can't get here soon enough.

In other news, Penguins have won 13 of 14, but they close the season at Capitals and at Flyers. Pens were down 3-0 in two of their recent wins.

If Trump's success has taught us anything, it's that the sample size of elections is far too small to predict anything with any kind of certainty. After all, pretty much everyone gave him near zero percent chance of getting the nomination back when he was leading the polls early last fall based on the way prior primaries have gone.

Even in Vox's own list, it's pretty much nonsense to say the party that was least divided won the 1948 election. The Democrats had a third party candidate actually win states. How does having a rough Republican convention compare to that?

Blogger bubbs said...

Isn't the state of Alabama great? Become governor and you're guaranteed a personal tour of the the legal system. Watch the whole process from the defendants chair.

MJT, you're ruining a perfectly good post of mine by inserting facts.

Frankly, I didn't even read the whole thing. I just wanted to goad THT.

If I'm putting my cards on the table, though, I'd say what the article was trying to do is little better than reading tea leaves. Which reminds me. I've not heard anything else about that article you shared the other day confuting the "authoritarian" position of Trump's popularity. Interestingly enough, I continue to hear different outlets mention "authoritarianism." Too little too late, I guess. People liked the idea/buzz word and I think it's here to stay, even if it's largely/partially(?) incorrect.

how come my next door neighbor never told me Bruce would be in Greensboro on Sunday night? She should be ashamed of herself. I may try to have her E Street Club membership revoked.

FYI, THT, it doesn't look like there'll be an easily accessible Bruce concert while we're on our Alaska trip.

4:18 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Maybe I'll remember to check airfares in the not-to-distant future. Last time I looked they were sort of painful but the biggest problem is you just can get to Barrow and Fairbanks without ridiculous layovers. One or the other is easily scheduled, but I want both.

I suppose the Bruce concert 3 or 4 years ago will end up being my last. On Friday night MrsTHT and I are attending a pseudoconcert by a pseudocaroleking. Because MrsTHT wants to,that's why. So zip it!

Maybe you can catch Bruce at a Democratic fundraiser some time in the near future.

I suppose I'm done with concerts, unless I go see Bruce on his 50th anniversary Born To Run tour. Hopefully, I'll find out early enough to get decent seats. One that will have enough space for me and my walker.

we're just a few days away from the best 2 weeks of the year. That's right, the first round of the Quest for Lord Stanley's silver cup.
