Anyone watch the A-Day. I didn't, but saw a blurb here and there about it. Sounded like defense was okay and the quarterbacks still suck. That's how I read them anyway.

And that TT QB transfer ... I'm with you THT. Not a problem solver. Not even sure why we would take him.

I think you have to make a decision between a passing QB and an option QB (White or JFIII). How do you want the offense to look?

This also leads me to believe that Gus will have JJ starting.

The Wilderness... what we called that stretch of barren nothingness of I-16 between Macon and Savannah. Thank goodness I was young way back when MrsTHT and I had to make that drive very late at night after an AU game. I'd rather be in a pit than wander that stretch of highway for the next 17 months.

Hugh Freeze still has MJT nightmares. Guaran-dang-tee it.

So my wife says over the weekend, "Hey, let's watch the Walking Dead. My brother says it's good." She hates horror stuff*, so I was surprised she wanted to give it a go.

Anyway, I was a little hopeful she would like it, but I kind of knew how it would go. She didn't last more than two minutes into the program. At the sight of the first zombie she said, "I hate this! I hate this! Turn it off!!!"

So still no Walking Dead for MJT.

*her hate of horror is funny, because she puts up with all kinds of gore like on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Vikings, 24, and so on. But involve a slow walking zombie or whatever, and she freaks out.

11:34 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Yeah. I watched the first few seasons of Walking Dead. It was pretty decent, but then I lost track ... meh. I will say that it could get pretty gruesome. I knew the end of your story before you told it.

Is Jessica Jones any good?

12:05 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

People frequently mistake me for one of those tv stars. I'm so old I apparently resemble one of those walking dead zombie things. I'm so old that I have never even heard of any of those other shows Michael mentioned.

12:24 PM
Blogger michael said...

Jessica Jones had a couple of really good episodes. It lost some steam at various times. The villain was my favorite part. Intriguing bad guy.

There were a lot of aggressive PG-13 sex scenes that were annoying.

I didn't like it as much as Daredevil, but I'll give it a mild thumbs up. Wife liked it, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to watch season 2. Said it was a little dark for her liking.

12:37 PM
Blogger michael said...

I don't believe you haven't heard of 24, THT. I figured you for a big Jack Bauer fan.

12:38 PM

I've hung with Daredevil, though, at times I've been a little underwhelmed. It should be noted I'm not a big super hero genre fan.

I think I'll skip Jessica Jones.

Yeah, THT. You had to have at least heard of 24. I've never seen it, but even I know the gist of what it's about. Plus, it first aired, like, 10 years ago. You weren't even out of your 80s at that point. I bet the nurses even talked about it at your Bingo night.

12:43 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that does ring a bell. 2.0 was a 24 fan back in the day. I probably watched two episodes. I remember it because it had the son of Hawkeye Pierce from the movie with the chaplain played by Odo.

I though y'all were talking about current tv shows. If we're going to watch old stuff, I'll stick with Laramie, the Rifleman, Andy Griffith, Combat, Rat Patrol, and High Chaparral.

How about this little nugget from one my favorite writers, Jerry Hinnen on the 2010 A day.
http://www.thewareaglereader.com/2010/04/a-day-impressions/

...if Caudle’s going to play like that, how much do we care? Again, it was just the spring game, but Caudle did look every bit the guy who knows the offense inside and out and frankly runs the zone read even more smoothly than Newton does. Do we have any evidence yet that Caudle can’t at least match Todd’s performance from a year ago, if not improve on it? The jury is further out on Trotter, given that he doesn’t have either Caudle’s time in the system or limited game experience, but he looked at least as good Saturday as Caudle did at A-Day 2009. Caudle probably would have done in a pinch last year, and Trotter appears like he’d do in a pinch this year. Even Moseley looked plenty comfortable.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to watch him try to return pants that are at the bottom of a reservoir. Plus, he thinks he's trying to return the pants he's wearing. Which he's not. He's not wearing pants. They're under water.

So, yeah, this is entertaining, but I'm working on a flow chart for the pants to help me keep track of things.

Just read the Malzahn article you posted, bubbs. Just more evidence that we are gonna win that natty this year.

Reading a little deeper, it seems likely to me that the decision by Gus to bring in "yes" men was a conscious decision to avoid the team taking on multiple personalities. That's interesting. Gonna get pure unadulterated Gus this year it sounds like.

12:22 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Eau de Gus, if you will. Pure essence of Gus.

We'll see how that works out. But the obvious is ... well ... verified. He was, indeed, hiring "yes" men on purpose. Intentional.

I still don't like it. Smells of desperation. Gus is admitting that he really doesn't know what he's doing as a head coach. Now, he may luck into the solution, but the odds are not in his favor.

This is a classic case of a research screwing up the concept of "correlation does imply causation"

http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/14/health/teens-sleep-school-start-times/index.html

"The study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that teens who get less than seven hours of sleep on school nights were more likely to engage in risky behaviors -- such as texting and driving, drinking and driving, riding with a driver who was drinking, and not wearing a seat belt in a car or a helmet while on a bicycle -- than teens who sleep nine hours a night.

"It was rather surprising to find such an impact of short sleep duration on these injury-related behaviors and suggests that sleep deprivation may play an important role in poor judgment and decision-making among adolescents," said Janet Croft"

I think lack of sleep will make you drowsy, but with regard to risky behavior, I think it is more likely that not getting enough sleep is just one bad decision made by a bad decision maker. I don't think lack of sleep is the reason someone texts while driving or whatever. All they have is correlation. Their conclusions are pretty dang unscientific.

5:10 PM
Blogger Jimmy said...

I think the risky behaviour may effect the study, in that better parenting requires more sleep for their children, would then trickle down to better decision making by teens.

Or it could have something to do with my pants.

5:47 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I don't think you guys understand the implications of this ground breaking study. All I have to do is make sure my kids get 9 hours of sleep, and I'll be a great parent! Done!

Davidson does sound like another Adams/Lawson. That would be nice. If our DLine turns out to be above average it could make our LBs look almost average. Wouldn't that be something!

I definitely wouldn't classify Cowart as a bust. I defended him a few times on that other website last fall. But what you hope for when you get the number 1 player in the nation is a Clowney or Myles Garrett impact player from the get-go.

Just noting that now we clearly have a game changing freshman d end who will probably be the number 1 draft pick after his junior year, so that is nice.

My idea of an Ironman is watching 3 different TVs in one day, the kitchen, the basement, and the bedroom. The basement one actually involves a flight of stairs, so there's a good bit of cardio work there... unless I finish with the basement and just fall asleep down there in the lazy boy. Once the Quest for the Cup is over, I'll take a break from that strenuous workout until college football hits the TV.

There's not that many good reasons to do it MJT. Let's see:

1. To get paid (pros)

B. For health (This is pretty marginal. Marathon+ level training can be counterproductive to certain aspects of your health).

III. The sense of accomplishment (These people do a race or two, get the shirt then back off).

C. Because it's their version of crack-cocaine.

I don't even remember why I started endurance sports, but I definitely fall under C, now. Pretty positive Eddie does, too. He may have started as B, but that ain't where he is now. There's a point where it messes with you during the rest of your life, if you get out of your training schedule.

I think it's cheaper than crack-cocaine, though. So I'll keep running.

Most people don't know that about the the Kings that went to visit Jesus. They weren't there at the manger/birth. Jesus was most likely a toddler by the time they got there. They ran the whole way, and were high as kites. Why else would you give perfume to a toddler? He'd have been much happier with the cardboard box it came in.

I call horse feathers on that first sentence. I've put in a lot of miles, and never felt anything that I would describe as euphoria. To me, it's a lot more like they describe with the mice. There's a sense of being relaxed or at ease at the end of a long run.

Stopping to repair airplanes mid-run gets you high?

I wonder how much research has been done with regard to the Airplane Repairman High.

12:32 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

It's bleeding edge stuff, MJT. Apart from my empirical evidence, I've done some preliminary computer modeling, and it compares the high to something akin to a heavy etc dose.

The airplane industry isn't what it used to be, though, so I'm not expecting any research grants anytime soon.

12:51 PM
Blogger michael said...

One of the big reasons there are so many flight delays is that the mechanics just want to get high, so they use any excuse to repair a plane. Remember that the next time you are stuck waiting for your flight. Freggin junky repairman. They're almost as bad as marathon runners.

This is also why I refuse to fly in an airplane that has been repaired. You know for 100% certain that the people repairing it were high. Hard to trust their workmanship. If anything on the airplane breaks, just toss the whole airplane out.

I've decided JFIII is gonna start.

Gus has always talked about it being a run first offense. Under Gus our OLine has traditionally done much better at the run rather than pass protection. We have a backfield that's pretty talented and can handle the load. They've talked up using the H-backs more ...

They'll try to get JFIII to about the 60% completion mark and give him the nod as the starter.

Final answer.

10:17 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

We're talking about the 2017 season, right?

And I'm with you on Prince, bubbs. To a point anyway. I think it has more to do with the fact that I've just never delved too deep into his music.

By the time I was old enough to be conscious of his music, his biggest records had already come out and he was already an icon and seemingly too big to fully comprehend, so past what was playing on MTV and the radio, I wasn't ever that familiar with his work.

I've meant for a long time to get a better sense of his music, but never got around to it. I will say that I thought his Super Bowl halftime performance some years back was amazing. That was the first time where I was like, "Yeah, this guy is ridiculously talented. I should listen to his music more."

And then proceeded not to. No time like the present, I suppose.

10:33 AM
Blogger michael said...

I share the meh view on Prince with you two dudes... it's probably because we're all basically the same age. I get more of a "you had to be there vibe" with Prince than with most other greats.

Most of his "great" songs sound pretty bland to me. Great performer, great multi-talented musician, but I never really got jazzed by most of his big hits (always did really like "Raspberry Beret" though).

10:52 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Welp. Glad there's a little corner of the interwebs where we could share our general shrug. Because heaven knows the rest of the webs would not be so kind to my sentiment right about now.

I'm talking 2016 season, E-Bro. Just because I've set the bar as low as it will go doesn't mean I'm not following the team. What do you think I am, a bammer?!?

I think it's Gus's only chance to make it out of 2016 with his job, to be quite frank. It's not going to send us to any 'ships, but it might get him to 2017 where Woody will win a natty and the Heisman.

Right now I see 4 solid wins and 4 solid losses. The 4 in the balance will determine Gus's job. He needs to do better than split those to hang around.

11:44 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

As I've stated elsewhere (cough), I feel like 2016 would need to be a giant $h!t show of a season for Gus to lose his job, or we at least need to understand the context of what's going with team beyond just what the record is if we do fire him.

I didn't come out of the 2015 season expecting a quick road to recovery. Felt like there's a fair bit of work to do on this team (to get to a championship level) that probably needs to be measured in at least a two year interval instead of one.

Certainly, it's damning to Gus that the situation is of his own making, but if we truly feel he's recognized his heretofore shortcomings, I'm more inclined to give him more than a year to correct the problem. Or rather, I don't want the measurable to just be wins and losses.

6-6 by itself won't be enough for me - and I realize you might be giving your take from the standpoint of the likelihood of Gus being fired rather than your own personal opinion on whether he should be or not - and I hope it's not what the higher ups in the administration go off of alone in making their decision.

1:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

Question: Is Gus's seat hotter or colder than Gene Chizik's seat was in April of 2012?

1:39 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I think the seats hotter and the ice thinner than it was going into the 2012 season. There was a sense that 2011 was a minor set back. Had CGT won 6 or 7 games in 2012, he would have had at least another year to work with. My perception with Gus is that there are some people that already have their finger on the trigger. They need 2016 to exceed expectations in order for them to TRY to keep him around.

Eh. My prediction on a 6-6 firing is more about how I think things would go down rather than how I believe they "should" go down. But it is hard to argue that 8-5, 7-6, and 6-6 should earn you another year on the job. Obviously, it's an easier call to make once we actually see the season unfold. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's ...

BTW - his recent demeanor about last season, the isolationism with coaches, and him talking about "getting back" to the way he used to do things

As I was saying ... All that stuff usually spells desperation. Seldom does it proceed success.

Look. I hope Gus has the offense clicking, and I get laughed at for being glum about 2016. We make a nice run and things are looking up by season's end. But I'm just callin' it like I see it.

2:17 PM
Blogger michael said...

Here is the correct answer to my question:

I think Gus's seat is hotter than Chizik's was (i.e. there is more of a disgruntled rumble, thus making his seat uncomfortable), but Chizik's ice was thinner (i.e. he was actually in the more precarious position).

Gus has been given credit for 2010 and 2013. Chizik never got credit for anything. Once he failed, the fans and the PTB were ready to pull the plug. I think the good times might help Gus coast a bit more.

Also, winning more than three games all year will help too.

2:36 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

You make a valid point with CGC's precariousness. Had he done well in 2012, he would have been lauded as a great coach/manager (Scarbo writing more articles how he compares to saban etc). But because he lost in such spectacular fashion right after Gus left, it made him look the fool. Like he didn't have anything to do with the previous success.

MJT puts the wins over/under for Gus keeping his job at 4. Bold move, MJT.

2:50 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

As I recall, we were supposed to good (talking pre-season prognostications and such) in 2012, right? To follow that up with 3-9, and not just 3-9, but the "the team totally quit the last few games" kind of 3-9 left no way back.

I guess that was one thing that still left me feeling good about last season. At times, especially early on, it seemed to echo 2012, but the team never quit, actually got a little better as the season went along, and at no point did I feel like Gus had lost control of the program (barring maybe a few hours when Duke was kicked off the team).

While I'm not convinced yet that Gus will get it done here, the way last season could have gone horribly wrong yet somehow still didn't at least gave me some hope about a future with Gus. I'm just also of the opinion that one season is not enough time to fix it, but 2013...

3:16 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I'll give you that. A lot of us commented on the difference in the players between 2012 and 2015. They never did give up last year. That's not nothing. It at least means Gus still has control of the program. It's probably another reason he decided to hire "yes" men, too. If he's going to lose his job it wont be because he wasn't really driving this thing.

However, the question remains on whether or not he can be a solid HC ... Seems odd that we're still asking that question 4 years into this thing (5 if you count ArkSt). I guess that's why I'm not all that optimistic. Anyone remember where a coach took that long to prove himself to be a good HC?

bubbs, to answer your earlier question about head coaches taking a while to prove they're good...Tubs' record at Ole Miss wasn't great. Saban's record with Michigan State was fairly pedestrian. Grant, those are smaller schools and Tubs certainly was dealing with extenuating circumstances in Oxford.

I've noted a Gary Patterson comparison before. Granted, his line of sustained success with TCU is much longer than Gustav's first two years as a head coach, but Patterson had to endure a pretty miserable couple of years of transitioning before the fruit of the last two seasons was borne.

Admittedly, though, these comparisons are a stretch. Then again, it's tough to compare Gus to standard coaching models given that he was a high school football coach less than a decade before becoming the head coach at a top 10-15 program. His learning curve has been different than others. Next season or two should tell the tale definitively.

11:25 AM

Look, secondly, you DON'T have anything to say about it. And finally, Verne is a happily married man who would never slide into a Food Network chick's DMs. And first of all, Verne's body can process butter directly into chortles, so Paula Dean's cooking wouldn't hurt him anyway.

12:48 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

You underestimate the DM-tress that Paula is. Verne's DM box has never seen the likes of someone like Paula. His past DM record has no bearing here.

Fourthly, I'm fine if Verne decides to chortle up all that butter. He'll be so busy chortling that no one will understand him, and CBS will have to replace him. They can't have someone like that on the air. It would be like if an announcer was constantly giving the viewer the wrong names. It defeats the whole purpose of having an announcer. They can abide by that.

You have no idea what I'm talking about, bubbs? Is it because the pre-paige flip post is missing a word? I'd edit it, but that's impossible, so I decided not to. Doh well.

THT, BBQ house's BBQ was just OK in my book. I mean, their sandwich was a solid example of south Alabama pre-mixed in mustard sauce + pickle style. I preferred Mike and Ed's sandwich over theirs, but again, we are talking South Alabama BBQ, so the there is a ceiling we are dealing with with all local Auburn BBQ. Of course, it beats the snot out of the soggy soaked in vinegar BBQ pulled pork they have here up in north Alabama.

I actually would like to have BBQ house sandwich though since it's been a few years since I had BBQ that style.

But anyway, their breakfast is second to none. Bacon egg and cheese biscuit was great on the run, but my preference was biscuits and gravy with eggs and some hashbrowns and various breakfast meats. I could knock out some food at that place, for realz.

Might be time for a road trip
