Ok, let me reach for the orange and blue tinted shades and say this...

I didn't really expect much from Jovon this season. Nothing more than flashes, anyway. Dude has talent. No doubt. But he didn't show a consistent enough attitude in the past to make me think he was going to buy in to being a good teammate.

Doesn't really change my expectations for the season, though that's in large part because I don't have any. Just going to try and enjoy the season for however it turns out and hope we make a bowl game at least, and then I'll go from there when/if we get to six wins.

So which QB does this development help/hurt the most? I saw on Twitter Warblogle thought this helps JFIII. I actually think this helps the more traditional passers since we are now so thin at RB. Don't want to put all your offensive chips on Kerryon staying healthy. And I have no doubt Gus still thinks of himself as a passing guru.

9:58 AM
Blogger michael said...

and by "this" I mean the Jovon situation, not the baylor dude that bubbs snuck in before I posted.

9:59 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

That's a good question. You're argument, however, assumes we have someone to throw the ball to. Let's say SW gets the nod. If the receivers drop a bunch of balls or run the wrong routes, it's all moot. Gus would have to go with a running attack. Also, as much as he might think of himself as a "passing guru" he continues to harp on his offense being "running offense." It's also where he's had the most success.

Right now we have:
(more traditional backs)
Johnson
Miller
Martin
(bigger FB/H type backs)
Pettway
Cox

That's thin when you consider Johnson is the only guy with real RB experience.

My conclusion is that we'll be going with ineffective. That's our mythical 2016 season offense.

10:11 AM
Blogger michael said...

Yeah, unless one of the QBs makes some great leap in performance this year, I agree the offense will be ineffective. But the interesting question is what style of offense exactly will be ineffective?! That's why we love fall camp! So many questions!

Sometimes my wife or I (mainly my wife tho) get mad at the kids, and we dole out some harsh punishment (NO TV or TREATS FOR A MONTH!)

Then we settle down and realize, oh crap, this punishment will be a pain in the butt for all involved... we were just really mad and didn't think this through. What have we done?!

I wonder if that's how Gus is feeling this morning.

If he's like us, he'll call Jovon and say he can earn back TV/Treats/Spot on the team by folding all the laundry and mopping downstairs or something.

10:39 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I don't care how much weight they say KJ has gained, I still think he'll be more in the mold of Mccalebb, i.e. not a "traditional" back. At this point, we might as well have Earl Brown at the helm.

Getting the ball to the receivers may be a bigger issue than the ball sticking to them once it arrives, though it's entirely possible both will be issues this non-existent season.

394 days and some 7 or so hours until kickoff.

10:44 AM

Here's the deal. Gus got tired of making JR (halfway) do the laundry. No matter what he did, JR never submitted to his authority. I wouldn't say he got put up for adoption, but he's going to an all boys boarding school now. And it's not a nice one.

11:14 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I dunno, THT. I think up the middle plays are going to go to Pettway and Cox (most of the time). Maybe even Miller. KJ and Martin will spend most of their time on the perimeter in order to try to utilize their speed.

But. Whatever. This not-really-happening-season is going to be terrible.

11:16 AM
Blogger michael said...

It will be interesting to see who is on the field and who gets the ball in short yardage situations. JJ and Pettway maybe? With Cox lead blocking? Throw in a Kerryon-cat from time to time like last year for good measure.

ugh. I just read the article about the transfer u docu-series. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if CGM dismissed JFiii right now. I'd rather have a good AU man at QB than someone of that ilk. Unless, of course, he can beat ua-t.

3:41 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

JFIII is ... an unknown to me. Depending on how you want to spin the docu-series, he can come across a couple different ways. Hacks have gone out of their way to mention him being upbeat/chummy in practices since it came out. I suspect they feel like we're not getting a full portrait of who he is, and they're making a "correction." JMO

But let's get down to brass tacks. Can he 1. complete >60% of his passes 2. not turn over the ball? If the answer to both of those is "yes," then we'll all be his biggest fans. If the answer to either is "no," he'll forever be a footnote in AU football trivia.

Re: your earlier article about soccer in America

I would say it's closer to nonsense (though not completely) than something to really keep an eye on. No doubt European clubs are interested in the US Market, but my feeling is that as these summer pre-season tournaments continue, interest will wane. There's still a bit of new car smell to them right now.

Plus, I think eventually there will be a backlash from European fans as well as the players who are already asked to play and travel too much.

I could see a scenario where a European league starts playing some regular season games over here like the NFL does in London, though.

8:07 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

THT, it doesn't appear as though they'll be moving Rudy. I think it would take an injury or two to the existing backs before that happened. So, you know, just hang on a second and let's see.

Jimmy, Gus is boring at all his pressers. It could be worse. He could be a loose cannon saying all kinds of crazy things.

I think Grit Laser starts the first game. I don't care what the coaches say about clean slates, how can you forget how many times JJ threw it directly to the other team?

11:27 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

That's how I see it too, MJT.

I bet it's frustrating. Let's say JJ is a practice player (I have to assume he is for him to have ever seen the field last year). There he is, doing everything in practice to make you think he should be the guy, but they know he melts under the lights. How do handle that? "JJ, we appreciate your effort and your stats say you should start, but we're going another direction. You never really had a chance."

Maybe they'll throw a lot of confusing defensive packages at him during the scrimmages so that it'll make it tough for him to do well. Heck, if they let the QB's go live, that should be enough to make him shut down.

I think Grit's numbers will be close enough to JJ's in the scrimmages in order for them to give him the edge. It should set up for another underwhelming season ... Well. At least for those of you who believe we're having a 2016 season.

bubbs: 2017, I think around early Spring. Hopefully it will be a wide release.

The one I am working on now in Massachusetts has a really great cast, Jason Clark as Ted Kennedy, Kate Mara as Mary Jo, Ed Helms as Joe Gargan, Bruce Dern as Joe Kennedy, Chris Cooper as Robert McNamara.

Another stellar cast there, Jimmy. Have wondered why Clark hasn't been given his due (he was great in Zero Dark Thirty..and other stuff, but especially that) as he's mostly been limited mostly to character work it seems. Sounds like he's the lead here, though.

Also, if Kate or her sister Rooney ever want to grab a drink or something, I'd probably be down. Just tell them you know this great guy on the internet that you've never met, but he's from TN and an Auburn man, so he's good people. Yeah, say that.

Blogger bubbs said...

You know, it's funny how different this year and last are projected. In reality there's little difference in personnel, we just have a larger body of work by which to grade the QBs. Frankly, we're better equipped (on paper) on D than we have been in years.

Granted, our RB situation is tenuous at best. But I feel like the coaches at least know what they have this year. Clearly, there were issues with JR that kept him from getting the playing time we needed out of him. It wouldn't surprise me if we get middle of the pack QB play, but end up blaming lack of RB depth for a couple losses.

I'm not saying we'll be good. I don't think we will be. I think the expectations are properly set this year. A sane O/U is set at about 7 wins. 8 would be maxing potential. Anything above 8 and a lot of "miracles" (2013) would need to happen. 6+1(bowl) would probably be enough for Gus to keep his job. <6 and we'll be speculating on who our new coach is by December.

10:56 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Why are we waiting til December?

Tom Herman if Big 12 doesn't take Houston?

well, it's all moot. JJ says he's not going to "flip people out of here like pancakes" anymore, and that Gus is the right man for the job now and for a long time to come.

Unfortunately, the writer of the article did not provide a translation of "long time" into units that I understand.

What kind of offense does Doc run?

Maybe that's the football I should be watching this year. Make a short list with some of these coaches and watch their teams. I can make highlight videos with commentary and send it to JJ's Pancake Shack.

Have so far watched the first couple episodes of "Last Chance U". I can see why JF3 hasn't come off great, but from the cheap seats, he mostly just seems like a college kid to me. Sure, he could use a dose of humility, but he's not all that different, attitude wise, from a lot of college football players I've seen before.

Furthermore, he seems like a bright kid with a sharp mind. I'm not talking about football when I say that. I don't know much about him as concerns football other than that he is a gifted athlete. Whatever else his shortcomings, he doesn't come off as an idiot.

The guy who comes off worse to me through two episodes is the head coach. Certainly with the cussing, even if cussing is still a big part of football, but he seems part of the good ol boy network of coaching that's more interested in winning than anything. He talks about this being a last chance for these guys to make an impression, but other than providing an avenue with which to play football, he doesn't seem much interested in developing their character to the point of becoming a better man, which more than the football, is probably what the guys in this situation need more than anything.

Maybe the next four episodes will make me feel differently about all this. Regardless, it's been interesting to watch.

However, it won't trick Viper, so be careful. If you're still interested, send $19.95 to Dear Leader and he will forward to drdra.

This is an interesting quote from today's presser:

"Auburn Gold Mine ‏@AUGoldMine 19m19 minutes ago
Auburn's Gus Malzahn: 'Our quarterback has to be more of a runner this year. I don't care who it is.'"

Let's be frank. Gus knows who the QB is gonna be. He's slow playing as a strategy for Clemson. I'm cool with that. I'm still putting it as 75/25 odds for White/JFIII. I think White starts and JFIII begins his career as the wildcat guy.

According to Gus, even ole Chris Todd had to be a threat to be a runner back in the day. I wish he meant what it sounds like he means, but I don't think he really means what it sounds like I think he sounds like he means.

I'm just wondering if the National Championship will feel better this year than in 2010. On the one hand, the first is usually the best, but on the other hand, it will be nice to win it without any scandals hanging over the season.

12:31 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

The scandal was one of the best parts. There was constant drama. JayG doing work and dropping hints and what he was hearing ... speculation was rampant. Add that to the exciting play on the field. It was electric.

Besides, now you can go back to all those bammers who said, "They wont keep it. They're gonna take that 'ship away when they find out everything on Cam." You can open a conversation, "Hey, I've been meaning to ask you. Have you heard anything else on the Cam investigation? I wanted to see how much time I still have to take my pic with the trophy."

6:20 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

This is a bit of twist as far as predictors go. We always focus on the skill positions when talking preseason (QB/RB etc), but I think a more consistent predictor is line play. Even at AU that's played out. When we've had a more experienced line (2010), we've done better things than when we haven't (2011/15). Sure, putting Trotter behind a great line doesn't mean we'll win a Natty. But great line play can make the difference in a couple games in the W/L department.

All that to say, we should have pretty solid lines on both sides of the ball this year:

DL is full of talent. If CL can stay healthy and if half the other guys live up to the hype we've been hearing out of camp, it might be the first time in a while we can count on them to make a difference.

OL is projected to be one of the best units in the country: https://www.profootballfocus.com/college-football-top-10-offensive-lines-in-notre-dame-stanford/

I'm revising my prediction. I think we get 7 wins in the regular season.

I've been on the record numerous times saying all of yall are a bunch of idiots.

The issue of ignorance is a little stickier, though. Only those who have proven it are for sure ignorant. The rest of yall just have ignoramus potential.

despite the lack of a thumb, John Strother still had a successful surveying career, primarily in western NC and then in TN. He also enlisted with Andrew Jackson's army during the Creek Indian War.
