Yes, it's that time again

THT has alerted me to the fact you all are approaching 5,000 posts, which means it's time for a new thread. It would be my pleasure to create said new thread. Before I leave, however, I'd like to provide you a picture of the always-lovely Mariska Hargitay.
Have a nice day.

michael, the Wyoming Cowboys play college football (usually rather poorly) 1,200 feet from our hotel room. Their remaining home games are Oct 28, Nov 4, and Nov 18 if you want to give it a try.

For an early September game up there, I was wearing a hoodie and getting wind burn. Not quite what I'm used to.

Good morning, Hotties. Have a great day!

Blogger bubbs said...

I wish our weather required hoodies in September.

10:07 AM

Well at least it's Pocketober now. You'll be wearing a jacket soon enough, bubbs.

Today would have been a perfect day for hiking if the mountain wasn't already covered in snow. Mid 60s and very bright sunshine that made it feel summery.

bubbs, I couldn't agree with you more. One fellow working at university bookstore said he and his wife are thinking about moving to our neck of the woods in NC, I think for both to further their education. We told him to stay in Wyoming to avoid all the bugs and humidity.

Snow melts above 32 degrees, THT. Sounds to me like you are feeding us some fake news.

I guess next time we plan an October hiking trip, it will be to Monte Sano, but only if the ticks, rattlesnakes, and copperheads are gone.

St. Louis is giving Penguins fans the blues :(

9:27 PM
Blogger michael said...

Well they'll still be around in October, but moving slow depending on the temp that day. I'll ask them to stay hidden for your sake.

You should try out the Natural Well Trail. It's a trail that has a big hole in the ground a couple of miles in. It's an MJT family fave.

While you're doing Monte Sano, THT, you might as well head into Bankhead National Forest just a bit south of here and do some hiking in the Sipsey Wilderness. Not a mountain per say, but that place is like an elven wonderland.

I565 is also an excellent place to hike in Huntsville. Don't forget about that one, guys.

12:41 PM
Blogger michael said...

If THT is going all the way down to Sipsey he might as well head to Smith Lake and jump off some cliffs. You can jump off cliffs at Monte Sano too, but there isn't water underneath so you'll die.

12:44 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm just saying, if he's coming all the way to Monte Sano, he might as well go a little further to the Sipsey.

And sure, he can stop off at Smith Lake too. I'll even tag along with my SUP in case he needs rescuing after jumping off the cliff.

1:04 PM
Blogger michael said...

I'm just saying, if he's going all the way down to Sipsey, he might as well keep heading down 65 a little further and arrive at the beach.

1:34 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Not to mention E-Bro has him camping out near Cullman. Who wants to be near Cullman?

1:46 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Welti Falls is pretty cool and Sipsey is near by, so Cullman can't be ALL bad.

While he heads down to the beach, he might as well go a little further and visit the Yucatan Peninsula. Then, from there's, it's more or less a puddle jumper to Antartica.

I so badly want to delete that last post because of "there's", but let this mistake stand for all future generations to see so that they don't have to see a "Comment deleted" instead.

Can't believe you did that bubbs. You're more disappointing than the Sipsey Wilderness.

even more disappointing was learning that the Cart Barn in La Grange will be closing in December. We just had dinner there and it was incredibly delicious . I give them 88 out of 10 stars.

78/98 = degrees and humidity at 8am. There is no doubt that I'm missing WY this morning, where it is currently 26 and snowing after a seasonal high of 64 there yesterday.

How ya figure Columbus Day is on Thursday? Is the real Indigenous Peoples Day on Thursday as well?

10:15 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. I'm old school; I don't recognize the 1968 holiday amendments.
I suppose E-Bro could have been celebrating IPD yesterday, though Mr. Trump declared otherwise.

Why do you hate immigrants so much, E-Bro? I bet you want to build a giant border wall like the king of the IP tried to do in the 16th century.

11:12 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Us immigrants pretty much get the other 364 days of the year. Surely we could spare one for the indigenous people.

11:37 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I can spare January 30.

12:10 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Since I'm 1/16th Cherokee, I only have to spare 22.5 hours. I'm usually busy on the Sunday when we "Spring forward", otherwise, that would be a good day to spare.

Or is it 1/8th? I can't remember.

5:13 PM
Blogger michael said...

I was always told my great great great grandfather was almost certainly Cherokee, but then my uncle got one of them blood tests and apparently didn't have any Native American blood in him. I was bummed.

You ever had the blood test, THT? You might've been lied to like me. There are a lot of liars around, you know.

bubbs must be in Antarctica chilling.

I saw something about a set of triplets whose blood tests showed identical DNA (obviously) but their ethnic backgrounds were not identical. Those tests are for entertainment purposes only. So I'll save the money and stick with my 1/16th claim.

Or is it 1/8th? I can't remember.

Also, I can't believe barbecue made in a coat factory can be all that good, THT.

1:27 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

2:27 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Freudian slip ... that was supposed to say *had*

2:27 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

It's not made in the coat factory, doofus. The pigs are smoked outdoors over the burning coats from the coat factory. There's nothing quite like cotton-smoked pork barbecue. I urge you to stay away from the rayon-smoked barbecue. I saw a report on the WWW that synthetic fiber-smoked barbecue causes Alzheimers and constipation.

2:44 PM

Am I too smart to be Auburn's coach?

10:22 AM

how about Antonio Conte?

12:25 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Not sure we could afford him.

12:30 PM

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I just realized that in all my years, I've never bothered to look up who that fellow was. I think I'll keep that streak intact.

11:07 AM
Blogger michael said...

Funny you say that, I actually looked him up for the first time right after making that post. There was a highway by my childhood home in Memphis named after him as well. Figured he was a pretty special dude. I mean, the Raleigh Springs Mall was right there on that road! There was also a Seesel's, a Piggly Wiggly, and a Children's Palace(which was later bought by Toys R Us)

11:34 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I read a couple sentences of something. All I got was that he was a governor. Anything else of significance that would make him namesake worthy?

You could have figured out the Governor part from watching one of their football games. Why waste time reading sentences?

12:13 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I don't have time to read THT's post. Someone summarize it for me.

12:36 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

college football good

reading bad

12:42 PM
Blogger michael said...

Dear bubbs,

THT began his post by addressing "you," assumed to be you (bubbs) since you were the last person to post, and THT's post appears to be in response to you. THT then goes on to insinuate that if you (bubbs) had witnessed an Austin Peay football game, and if you also had a proper functioning brain, then you (bubbs) would have ascertained the very fact that you said you had extracted from the Wikipedia article. Namely, that Austin Peay was formerly a governor of Tennessee. THT then switched gears and offered a question that is rhetorical, as he believed the correct answer was obvious having been demonstrated by his previous statement. The jist of the question was that it is a wasteful use of time to read things when all you really need to know comes from watching football games.

Thanks,

MJT

2:14 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I never said it was a Wiki that I read. THT needs to be more careful with his assertions.

3:32 PM
Blogger michael said...

It's very true that THT made that assertion in the long post of his that you didn't read. He really should be more careful.

4:48 PM
Blogger Cincytiger said...

I used to live just around the corner from Raleigh Springs Mall. I was there when they were building it. Is it still operating?

Call me a glutton for punishment but I am looking forward to AU football tomorrow. Hit me again!!

5:07 PM
Blogger THT said...

Doesn't look like it is still operating.

Somehow I completely missed the fact you lived there, Cincy. I thought about editing the Wikipedia entry to reflect the mall site's proximity to where you lived, but it being a Friday night, I figured my edit would be gone by the time anyone gets back to HABOTN to see the link.

I'm guessing neither you nor michael ever headed up US 51 to Halls, TN?

9:19 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

bubbs, when you are AU's head coach, will your team be able to pick up one yard when it needs a half yard? And will you promise to have the QB under center on very short yardage situations and have an O Line that can get some push?

7:51 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

one more question, Coach bubbs, will your teams have good kick coverage?

9:08 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Go out of town for a few days and I miss a THT reference to Antonio Conte.

You win some, you lose some.

8:08 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I can promise all of the above except OL push. That often comes down to talent. I'll have them conditioned, but I'm not sure about how my recruiting will look. But, hey, I'm already shooting you straight. No coach speak over here, boss.

9:06 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Sign E-Bro, bubbs. He had to put forth some effort to find the Conte reference. That's the kind of player you want, although you may have to work a bit on his lackadaisical approach to winning.

10:29 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Now that it's not against the rules to block in the back on kick returns, I think I can find a place for E-Bro to play right off the bat.

10:33 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Make sure you teach him to hit squarely in the back, 'cause it's apparently illegal for AU players to make clean blocks on the front shoulder region on kick returns.

10:48 AM
Blogger michael said...

cincy - I didn't know you were a Raleigh girl. How long did you live there? If you were there when they built the mall, it was quite a bit of time before I showed up. I was there from 1987 until about 1994 or so. I lived in the neighborhood behind Seesel's. You take Austing Peay heading north, take a left on Yale, then take a right on Merritt, and that's my old neighborhood. Where was yours?

11:12 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

speaking of Raleigh, I'll be in Manteo this weekend. And yes, I'll be eating fried shrimp at Darrell's on Thursday night and Friday night, assuming they serve shrimp as tasty as they did 16 years ago.

Where is the HABOTN Chronicler when you need him/her. I don't even know who the official HABOTN Chronicler is. I'm pretty sure it wasn't paulmain. I hope it wasn't FENG; nothing he writes makes any sense.

4th monday = meeting night. Oh joy. I'd rather go to the dentist. Unfortunately, I'll get to do that, too... tomorrow morning. Too bad my dentist doesn't have Monday evening office hours.

Hope no one has a heart attack this time. You guys should probably take the stress back a notch in those things.

No heart attacks, but somebody turned the dial the wrong way tonight.

michael, we lived in Frazier from about 1964 until 1966 and then moved out to Raleigh. It was a very nice suburb when we lived there. I think it has gotten a little rough and rundown since then. We lived in Raleigh from 1966 until about 1970, so I was there well before your time! I lived on the opposite side of Austin Peay, on Aspen. Austin Peay to right on Yale to left on Arsenal to Aspen. I lived on the corner of Aspen and Arsenal. There was a Presbyterian church (I think) on the corner of Yale and Arsenal. I went to Brownsville Road Elementary. It was brand new when I was there for 3rd - 5th grade.

So you basically lived behind the shopping center that housed Triple Play (trading card store) and Service Merchandise when I was there. Solid shopping center right there.

I know one of those churches right around there was converted into a "Love in Action" center, which was a bit controversial to say the least. Might have been that Presbyterian church.

Service Merchandise. That's a blast from the past.

Never did venture into one of those stores. Did I miss something great?

11:16 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I remember them having some cool stuff, but nothing earth shattering enough to keep them around.

They sold jewelry and bicycles and a lot of other random stuff from what I remember. It was one of the stores I didn't mind going in as a kid (unlike clothing stores)(which I still hate to go in, btw).

Looked up why they went belly up. While reading about it, I remembered more about why I liked them as a kid. They had a big catalog, and a good toy section.

I discriminate against clothing stores, too. I'm not sorry.

Outlet Malls were the bane of my existence growing up. Couldn't go on a beach trip without my Mom stopping at one for an hour or two on the way back.

Got a little better when they started having Nike Outlets, but that's grasping at straws. The book store is the only place I'd go, but the books it had were like free books you'd fine on Kindle now a days and want nothing to do with.

We hit up the outlet mall on our way back up from the beach every year. It's a nightmare.

I just did an internet search for Service Merchandise and the word "Zayre" showed up in the "people also searched for" box. Now there's another blast from the past. I think my brother peed his pants in Zayre one time.

I shopped in a Zayre store in Burlington, and pretty sure also in W-S. Never got excited enough to pee my pants.

Speaking of clothing stores and outlet malls, loathe is too weak to describe my feelings on them. But, I have to wear pants to work. Since I can't match clothes, I wear the same color pants every day and all the shirts go with those pants. Each football season, we'd stop for a few new pairs of navy blue pants at the Polo store in Gaffney, SC. It was simple and quick, no decisions to make. Found out this season that Polo stopped carrying that style of pants. I suspect I'll wait until my current inventory is a pile of threads before I go clothes shopping, but where?! Most of the ones in my closet have holes or "near holes" showing in the "wallet pocket". Good as new as far as I'm concerned.

Back in the day, I found a few decent books on tape for the long trek at outlet mall book stores. Steven King type stuff. Not high art, but it'll pass the time.

Penguins finally waived backup goalie Antti Niemi, who was 0-3 with .797 save percentage and allowing 7.49 goals/game. Penguins brought up a minor leaguer to be backup; I can't help but think he can do a bit better than Niemi. Heck, even this awesome guy could probably do better.
What's really surprising is that the Florida Panthers immediately claimed Niemi off waivers. I hope he can get his game back, just not against the Penguins.

Good to see you post this morning, THT. I was starting to think you might really be Fats Domino.

You know maybe the problem with Niemi was the Penguins culture. He'll probably do great with a change of scenery.

cincy, the only one of those I have heard of is Woolworth's, though I don't think I've ever been in one. But the store is kinda in the national consciousness. Of course, I'm the one who brought up Zayre, so that gets me way more cool points than these other youngsters.

THT, I've been meaning to ask you, was your Zayre in the same coat factory you got that BBQ in?

bubbs - I pronounce it "cat." How do you pronounce it?

9:01 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Sad to say, I kinda go back and forth because I'm never 100% on what is the right way (though, I think it is "cat").
